THESIS PROJECT

Art as an Antidote: A reacreational village for healing

Thesis Dissertation Semester X Guide:- Ar. Rahul Patel

Numerous individuals feel uncertain and hopeless from time to time, yet when does it assume control over their entire lives? Mental health is taboo topic that no one ever speaks about or feels comfortable mentioning. Our society doesn’t accept going to see a doctor for a mental issue, a real thing. The goal of art therapy is to utilize the creative process to help people to explore self-expression and, in doing so, find new ways to gain personal insight and develop new coping skills. Through this thesis, I intend to offer a safe space to individuals facing such issues, to heal in their choice of a comfortable environment, and not confine them to any closed space. The intention behind this project is to step forward and explore the art and its various forms as a means of healing and create a recreational space for the users, with the idea of taking a break from hustle and bustle of urban sprawl and getting back to the nature and its roots. the project focuses on designing a space for the disturbed minds to share their feelings and thoughts in the serene environment and experience the artistic exploration. “Creating artwork allows your mind to be in a safe place while it contemplates the tougher issues you are dealing with. One can use the tools of brush, paint, pastels, crayons etc to expose and even for a short time color those issues in a different light.” ~ George E. Miller

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT AND FORM DERIVATION It is normally observed that rigid forms and sharp lines confuses the mind and circular and organic shapes blends in with the surroundings. For the thesis topic art as an antidote, it began with breaking geometry and achieving circular form and rearranging the blocks in such a way that it creates an inclusive space with radial interaction. it was neccessary to place spaces in such a way that along with interraction, privacy is maintained and all the areas are inter- connected with each other.

Reusing boat for informal spaces

Reusing boat for therapy purpose

“Balancing the boat” occupational therapists help clients to “balance their boat” and engage in meaningful occupations as clients journey through life.it is very impostant for one to have peace of mind for proper harmony and balance in life. In Selah art centre, the boats are symbolic and are reused for the purpose of therapy. Many used boats are seen lying near the site area. instead of discarting those boats, why not use them for a better purpose and enhance its beauty. Undergraduate portfolio

LANDSCAPE ELEMENTS

Aromatic Gardens

Botanical Gardens

Aromatherapy is usually plants based. The term is new but it has been in practical use in many ways. placing raat Rani or champa tree on the pathways so that one can quickly lift up through the fregrance. Placement of this garden helps one to enjoy the process of journey of the whole site and also brings fregrance to the workspace.

Human interaction with plants promotes health healing powers. The visuals and feeling of various plants and their beauty lifts up the mood and mental peace of a person. Moving from pond Side towards the bridge, this garden attracts people with its pleasing environment towards amphitheatre.

URBAN DESIGN ReGREENeration

Urban Design Studio Semester IX Faculty:- Prof. Jyoti Gill

The city of Anand is widely known as the ‘Milk city of India’ and was a prominent landmark in the history as it was the birth place of ‘White Revolution’. The city was also later known as the study town as Nationally recognised institutes laid their foundation stone in one of the initial panned study town ‘VIDHYANAGAR’. During the study various factors like density of population, ecology, topography and other economic and residential statistics of the town were profoundly studied. These urban pockets were located in city centers and were usyally used as illegal garbage dumps or unmaintained greens, and had the highest potential for development depending upon their location on urban city developement. The vision behind this project at a city level was to transform the public landscape with enviournmentally and economically sustainable activities inviting people from the neighbourhoods and enhancing the experience for various stake holders. At a neighbourhood level the vision was to develop a space through a network of interventions with support from local associative factors using residual spaces as the epicenter of growth.

REGREENERATION at city scale:

at neighbourhood scale:

to transform the public landscape with environmentally and economically sustainable activities inviting people from neighbourhoods and enhancing experience for various stakeholders.

to develop neighbourhoods through a network of interventions with support from local associative factors using residual spaces as the epicentre for growth.

Objectives:

Aim: “To form a congruous ecosystem with the help of localized support systems”

Undergraduate portfolio

• Preserving and enhancing the existing ecosystem. (natural+man made) • Creating Awareness amongst the local population by physical interventions & public campaigns & art. • Reserving Certain zones as designated green spaces which can act as the lungs of the urban fabric. • Creating a balanced ecosystem ( i.e, Enhancing the link between the builtspacebeings ) • Creating a Visual harmony around the whole fabric. • To sustain the identity of charotar as a green region.

Redeveloping sardar patel junction Creating recreational spaces for children would also focus on socio cultural aspect and create a healthy neighbourhood environment which helps in growth of the city as well as an individual.

BEFORE

AFTER

Why this junction for redevelopment? • The strong axis demarcates the entrance to the main hub and the location of statue is at very strategic location. • The 4 quadrants landmarks the boundary of central plaza. •The circle is being less utilised due to lack of infrastructure and the unused quadrents are converted into dumping areas. • Unsegregated and unorganised pedestrian zone, During monsoon there is high water fluctuation observed here. • Stakeholders: locals, students, commuters.

The studio began with the city level study of Ahemdabad city .an area was then chosen for further detail study. the site located on vastrapur station road connecting makarba and vejalpur, had an existing EWS housing.

Existing road section

Housing has been recognized as a basic human right under a number of international conventions, access to housing for low-income people is often problematic. As with any large building undertaking, bringing a house development to life requires both a big picture vision and attention to detail.

The zoning is doen based on the enviournment people are comfortable in and around. In the entrance, a club house and all public use temple space is provided. personal gathering chawks are given between clusters to create a sense of neighbourhood. a small commercial complex with designated parking is provided at the corner of the maain accessible road making it user friendly.

This project includes 4 major types of housing units: LIG1 (1BHK AND 1.5 BHK), LIG2 (2BHK), MIG1 (3BHK). Every buliding requires a community social gathering space, weather it is for LIG, MIG or HIG people, along with parking space and a breathing garden space.
