Humans of Harker has been thrust onto center stage this year. Due to these unusual circumstances, we have been able to more easily read about the lives of this amazing class. I would like to thank the journalism staff for their efforts in transforming the stories of each of you into heartfelt words that tugged at our emotions in a way that is inspiring. THE BEGINNING OF THE END Adhya Hoskote claps enthusiastically during the Baccalaureate ceremony on May 22, 2019. This ceremony, which preceded the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2019, marked the Class of 2020’s first day as seniors. TIME FLIES ASB President Avi Gulati gestures while giving a speech at the Matriculation ceremony, which was held on Aug. 23. During the event, the Class of 2020 sat in a designated senior section for an all-school ceremony in the quad for the last time. IT’20VER Piper White, Devin Keller and Jack Connors yell during the scream-off during Homecoming Week. Before this event, the senior class surprised the school as they ran, jumping and chanting, onto the gym floor in a grand performance of class unity. FIRSTS AND LASTS Emily Cheng and Allison Jia bump hips during Disney Classics, the senior-only performance, of the dance show. Every year, the dance show, which is held in early February, has two all-senior dances. ENDING ON A HIGH NOTE Darshan Chahal, Asmit Kumar, Andrew Cheplyansky, Shomrik Mondal, Brandon Lin and Anthony Xu smile for a photo together during their game against Eastside College Prep on Senior Night. Later that month, on Feb. 29, the varsity boys soccer team defeated St. Francis High School in penalty kicks and was crowned CCS champions.

I hope every person that reads this unique tribute will cherish the memories within for a very long time. Sincerely, Mr. Butch Keller Upper School Head

The joy of creating these profiles is discovering and sharing the voice, passion and nuance of every individual. To capture what sets each student apart, journalism writers dedicate four weeks to writing each profile and interviewing the senior as well as at least three other sources who know the senior intimately. We strive to give seniors a platform to communicate their successes and challenges through this comprehensive and well-sourced overview. Students across grade levels also learn more about their classmates. Parents, grandparents and other community members also recognize that their child is being seen and heard.

prologue Dressed in iconic graduate’s gowns with celebratory leis wrapped around their necks, members of the Class of 2020 jubilantly toss their caps into the air. Instead of the breathtaking landscape of the Mountain Winery and the applause of hundreds of people behind them, they rejoice in a backyard with a handful of family and friends. A little under four years ago, around 170 faces walked down the stone path from Manzanita Hall to the Quad as rows upon rows of students and faculty cheered for the newest members of the Harker upper school community. Some strode to their seats, shoulders back, chin high, ready to take on this new step in their academic growth. Others shuffled down the line, wide eyes taking in the balloons, waving teachers and clapping throng of upperclassmen. A plethora of emotions swarmed in the minds of the new freshmen in this moment: anticipation, anxiety, excitement and the slightest bit of uncertainty. Nonetheless, each pushed ahead, courageously stepping into their high school experience. And so began the journey of the Class of 2020. A lot has changed over the past four years. Friends and romances evolved, interests diverged and, most importantly, a sense of community formed. At the end of high school, the Class of 2020 emerged as a tight-knit motley of talented, perceptive individuals, larger and more connected than ever. These people, though each distinctly unique from the next, united under a shared sense of dedication toward their class. This dedication shone through many aspects of their high school careers. In spirit, the Class of 2020 clutched wins in the eagle painting event in the fall and the spirit rally dance in the spring. As leading members of Harker’s teams, they broke records in sports ranging from volleyball to soccer. They shined on stage, wowing watchers with moving performances and energetic choreography. They delved into academia, transforming into Regeneron researchers and Near Mitra scholars. Outside the school walls, the Class of 2020 led by example in many of the defining moments of the last four years. This class not only juggled the responsibilities that all students face but also lived through tumultuous times in regards to major local and global events.

They felt the grief of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, taking to the streets to join the international March for Our Lives demonstration to demand change. They witnessed the devastation of the California wildfires and raised funds for those affected. They participated in worldwide climate strikes, Black Lives Matter protests and women’s marches. They saw the election of one president and covered the race for the next. In these instances, they were met by uncertainty. Yet instead of letting that uncertainty define their actions, the Class of 2020 demonstrated resilience and perseverance, using those obstacles to bring the community even closer. This unwavering tenacity and unconditional loyalty held true even when tested against the most difficult obstacle yet: the coronavirus pandemic. Its effects hit the senior class hard when on March 12, the Harker administration closed all four campuses after the virus made its way into our community. To most, the school closure was surreal – an initial wave of excitement followed by confusion. As the shelter-inplace guidelines grew stricter, the world began to see something that none of us have ever experienced before. In a flash, our seniors lost what they had been striving for since those first moments in the Quad. From prom to graduation to the Laguna Beach trip, the Class of 2020 watched milestones go by each month as quarantine seemed to rob them of their last moments in high school. However, even when faced with the harsh reality of losing the experiences that come with the coveted title of “second-semester senior,” the Class of 2020 created their own memories. Whether it be discovering a love for neighborhood walks, hosting birthday parties over Zoom or becoming (notso) certified aestheticians, our seniors continued cultivating their relationships and working to better themselves. When faced with adversity, they managed to remotely maintain their class connection. From their first steps onto Harker’s Upper School to their last on that fateful March date, this class was bound to make history, both in the Harker community and in the world at large. Though the seniors never truly reached their final milestones in the way that their predecessors did, the Class of 2020 will undoubtedly never be forgotten.

and triumph, as will the seniors when they read an article dedicated to their experiences: By showcasing our seniors’ talents, memories, dreams, regrets and hopes, we hope they will remember their Harker experience for a lifetime. The project you know and hopefully love launched four years ago with the Class of 2017, originally intended to be a three-year pilot program for the TALON yearbook. It quickly grew in popularity and received love and support from both students and our wider community.

To the LEGENDARY Class of 2020, At the end of the 2018-2019 school

The joy of creating these profiles is discovering and sharing the voice, passion and nuance of every individual. To capture what sets each student apart, journalism writers dedicate four weeks to writing each profile and interviewing the senior as well as at least three other sources who know the senior intimately. We strive to give seniors a platform to communicate their successes and challenges through this comprehensive and well-sourced overview. Students across grade levels also learn more about their classmates. Parents, grandparents and other community members also recognize that their child is being seen and heard.

Humans of Harker also provides a valuable teaching tool for our journalism staff. Every journalism student is involved in the process of writing these profiles, which are assigned at the beginning of the year. Our feature-writing abilities have improved, and so have our skills as portrait photographers. This year, because we lost the chance to be together, the journalism staff decided to create a separate publication to be sent directly to everyone’s homes. In this spirit, we present to you the first-ever Humans of Harker magazine. The magazine is a collaboration between the Humans of Harker team and TALON leadership Anoushka Buch, Nilisha Baid, Shreya Srinivasan and Helen Zhu. The TALON staffers poured their dedication, passion, perseverance, graphic design skill and time into this project over the past weeks as they designed each page. Without their generosity and tenacity, this magazine would never have come to fruition. The Humans of Harker team cannot thank them enough, and I personally owe them endless amounts of boba. The magazine includes responses from the senior questionnaire sent out in early May: the Class of 2020’s advice is funny, loving, inspirational, serious and

insightful. The pages are grouped by advisories, and the seniors’ advisers, senior dean, Mr. Keller, the Office of Communications and the Alumni Office also sent in additional words of encouragement and advice. As Editor-in-Chief of this project, I want to thank the seniors for their willing participation, warmth and honesty. I also want to thank every journalism student who allocated their time and energy to creating these stories. Finally, I would like to thank my adviser, Ms. Austin, for her constant support, encouragement, advice and bad jokes – we would never have been able to do this without you. I hope you will take the time to discover the collective story of our seniors: their experiences, their life advice, their reminiscences about the past and their hopes for the future. The power of the Humans of Harker project is its ability to make us connect with every senior. Together, these unique stories join to complete the narrative of the Class of 2020. THE BEGINNING OF THE END Adhya Hoskote claps enthusiastically during the Baccalaureate ceremony on May 22, 2019. Thank you to our 2020 Harker Journalism seniors: Anthony, Delaney, Emily, Eric, Gloria, Jessie, Jin, Kathy and Nina! So much gratitude for the thousands of collective hours you spent during your four years of high school in the journalism room – on covering a political campaign rally; listening to fierce debates at Speakers’ Corner in London; uploading photos for the Campaign 2020 national archive site; covering the protest marches in San Jose and SF; covering another Harker championship game; designing and illustrating an award-winning Winged Post; shooting (another) portrait for Humans of Harker; interviewing city officials for the housing package; breaking the news of the strange new virus as it arrived in California; spending (another) weekend working on TALON spreads; living the “seniors don’t have finals but you have to work on yearbook” weeks. This was a year like no other, yet you rose with courage to the challenge of history in the face of challenging political currents, a rising tide of protest about inequity and injustice, and a global COVID-19 pandemic that cut through your senior year. Thank you for standing up for what you believe, whether it was comfortable or not, and for leaving a legacy that will live on brightly. You are brave and amazing. But also, you are so much fun! I will miss you very much, and wish each of you great things in the years ahead. Ms. Ellen Austin Director of Journalism
