In this area, we may be fortunate enough to meet some of Sweden’s – if not Europe’s – largest elk bulls. HUNTING FOR THE GIANTS OF THE FOREST WITH SHARPENED SENSES

Elk hunting with a bay dog brings the hunter into close contact with nature and makes great demands of his or her hunting abilities. This hunting puts the interaction between dog and hunter into sharp focus, in an activity that is all-consuming. If you’ve been hankering after great hunting and wilderness experiences and this type of hunting is new to you, you’ll be raring to go again. The view from the red wooden cabins in the camp is unbeatable. Ahead of you, the sun’s rays gleam on the water with its contrasting dark blue that interrupts the otherwise endless expanse of green and brown forest. Far away, out on the horizon, a bare mountain erupts out of the terrain as an irrefutable emphasis of the wilderness of this region. In only a few places in Europe is it possible to get further away from civilisation and find such flawless calm and peace of mind – so no surprise that all of the Härkila ProTeam members have assembled here for the next day’s elk hunt. Hunter and guide use a GPS tracker to follow the elk hound, which hopefully

overnight. The hunters who will take up their positions this morning have therefore trudged through the half-light over damp marshes. For them, it is now time for a relaxing hunt, sitting at strategic locations around the terrain. For Jens Kjær Knudsen and his hunting guide Daniel Persson, on the other hand, it is only now that the hardships begin. Jens and Daniel have to walk with a GPS tracker after the elk hound in an attempt to get within range of the elks it will hopefully hold at bay for them. The dog is released. Water splashes up from the pools as it glides with long strides out over the marsh. It can be glimpsed now and then among the low shrub at the back of the marsh. Then the receptors in its sensitive nose are triggered, and the dog sets a course and disappears at high speed. Over the next hours, Jens and Daniel follow the hound, which nonetheless constantly increases its distance from the hunters. Daniel walks briskly, often breaking into a jog, and Jens just has to keep up. Even though the pace is high, Jens’s optimism keeps him going. Because it seems as if the dog is onto an elk. Once it even appears to have the elk at bay, but the hunters are still a way off

when the GPS display registers movement again. In most types of hunting, it is often best to cool things down, take a break, weigh up the situation and examine the options. Since everything seems to be going wrong now, Daniel decides to sit down and wait a while. Suddenly everything changes. Calm turns into intensity, relaxation into excitement. From the GPS display, Daniel can see that the dog and elk are heading towards them. If they move just a little, to the top of the hill on the edge of the marsh, Jens will surely get a shot.

10-pointer bull They quickly reach the top, where there is a view. Jens sees a grey colossus of an elk bull with a 10-point antler. It runs to the foot of the small hill, and it is broadside on to them. The rifle is immediately cocked, the animal sighted, and the finger crooked. The elk, hit clean on the shoulder blade, doesn’t appear troubled, but turns 90 degrees to the right and runs directly towards Jens and Daniel. Jens puts bullet number two into the enormous animal front-on. There’s no reason to shoot again since both guide and hunter are certain that both bullets have landed where they should. The bull falls seconds later under a young fir tree branch – hard work now awaits. The ProTeam gathers around the felled elk. Despite the hard towing work needed to recover the several hundreds of kilo of heavy beast, everyone sports a smile and a glint in the eyes. The spirits are no less high a little later, when the hunters and guides make camp on a little hilltop amidst the colours of autumn. A fire is lit, and while the water for the coffee heats up, the elk’s heart is cut into thin slices that are fried in a hot skillet. The ProTeam spend the rest of the day jointly transferring and readying the many kilos of valuable meat for further preparation in Swedish country kitchens. When the hunters finally turn in after a busy day, it is with sore muscles but also the anticipation of more thrills to come – they’ll be out again tomorrow!

very large population of bear. In addition to licences for elk, there are also licences for bear in this area, and if the opportunity arises, the hunter has permission to take one. On this day, Daniel is hunting with Claus Juul. Given the success of the previous day, both are full of optimism when the dog is released. It runs at high speed down the hill, and seconds later vanishes into the dark undergrowth. The GPS tracker shows that it is still moving through the forest at high speed. Daniel immediately decides to follow and sets a quick pace over the trackless terrain. These are minutes that put the hunter’s physical prowess to the test, minutes that soon become hours of endless movement.

Visibility in the undergrowth is never more than 30 metres, and often less than 10. Daniel, however, ups the pace, since the little GPS display shows that the dog has something at bay. It is still many kilometres off. Daniel wants to get closer as quickly as possible, so they run the next kilometre. The ground is uneven. Slopes of blueberry bush give way to rocky ground with pronounced outcrops, and they have to constantly duck under branches or step over fallen moss-clad trunks. Finally, they are close enough for the dog’s baying to reach their ears. Daniel immediately slows down but still heads for the noise. A few metres on

released and runs down the hill at high speed.

however, he stops stock still, listens, reads the sounds and decodes the signals. If the dog has put up a bear, his baying will be different from if he has an elk. Within a few seconds, Daniel concludes that it is very likely to be a bear. This is certainly a possibility, partly because Daniel is highly experienced in this type of hunt and partly because they’ve seen lots of fresh bear droppings and tracks over the last few hours.

A dream trophy In these few seconds, the trinity of hunter, dog and prey meld into a fateful climax. Slowly, shoulder to shoulder, Claus and Daniel approach the sound. Because of the dense forest, they move forward with cocked rifles at the ready. The situation is very dangerous and, in a split second, the bear could come thundering out of the forest depths in a frontal assault. There’s no reason to take any chances. Just as they poke their heads over a hilltop, Daniel realises that this is no bear but an elk. Dogs are not machines, and this young hound is not yet experienced with bears. This is most likely the cause of Daniel’s misinterpretation. An elk instead of a bear maybe reduces the danger somewhat, but the excitement is just as great. From the hilltop, they can catch a glimpse of the animal, but it is difficult to distinguish front quarters from hind, and where the dog is. It’s almost impossible to take a shot. When they get closer, they see that this is a bull with

palmated antlers, a real dream trophy. Suddenly, it turns and starts moving away, side on. Just as the dream seems about to be dashed, it ratchets up a notch. The dog is now in sight, a little behind the bull, which slowly passes through an opening – now’s the moment! For a good while, they relish the sight of the large animal, while recounting the stages of the hunt, in all its detail. Soon, however, reality catches up. The terrain is pretty impassable; they can’t bring up a tracked vehicle to haul out the elk and two men can’t do it on their own. It goes without saying that, in places like this, the haul-out can be extremely hard or very expensive. Daniel does the only thing he can – he calls in a helicopter. The successful team enjoys the view when, a few hours later, they are gliding aloft over the forest. Looking ahead, they can see mountains, forest and lakes. Looking down, they can see a 13-pointer in a sling – an astonishing adventure! The last couple of days have offered all participants and ProTeam members, as well as dog handlers and guides, unforgettable hunting in some of Sweden’s most stunning scenery – it’s not the last time the team will be on an autumn elk hunt!

HÄRKILA’S PROTEAM We have assembled a small group of extremely skilled, experienced and very different hunters into a professional but informal forum: Härkila’s ProTeam. The ProTeam goes on a variety of different hunts each year. When they are not hunting, they spend their evenings exchanging experiences and ideas, talking details and performance features. It is inspiring and stimulating to assemble a group of such skilled hunters and let them discuss products, opportunities and new ideas. We use the ProTeam to test products in the development phase, before they are ready for market. In other words, using prototypes that will then be adapted based on the experiences we garner. This may involve adding or removing details, making extra reinforcements, if necessary, or providing extra freedom of movement in a garment. When a group of highly experienced hunters are in agreement about an aspect of a product after having tested it thoroughly, they should be listened to. The crucial properties of garments, such as breathability, strength, silence and waterproofing, also get tested. The ProTeam’s insights and feel for the products also means it is natural to use them as inspiration for new and innovative gear. Their contribution helps hunters the world over to benefit from the best possible clothing and equipment. FIND YOUR FOOTING Footwear is among the most undervalued hunting gear. However, it is among the first things the experienced hunter looks at when he judges another hunterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s readiness. He knows that the wrong footwear means sore feet and blisters before the day is over. He knows that the wrong material can lead to cold and wet feet. He knows as well that a lack of ankle support can cause injuries and falls on rocky slopes. All of these can bring a good dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hunting to an abrupt end. YEARS OF HÄRKILA’S LAPPMARK Intervju med Kaj Filrup, 74 år. Kaj Filrup is a hunter. Since he acquired his licence a good 30 years ago, hunting has been a passionate focus for both him and his family. Their little Swedish hunting consortium consists exclusively of three generations of Kaj’s family, who all cherish togetherness, nature, hunting and life’s enduring values. In the early 1990s, Kaj purchased a Härkila Lappmark hunting suit, trousers and jacket, with GORE-TEX® membrane, from a Copenhagen retailer. Like the rest of the family, these garments have followed him through thick and thin in all the thrills and spills of hunting. I meet Kaj and Arkas, his yellow labrador, for a walk and breakfast at his hunting cabin in the middle of 90 hectares of beautiful Swedish forest and fields. It ends with a long chat about family life, traditions and, of course, hunting. Kaj warns me from the off: ”Now you’ve got me going! Once I get chatting, there’s no stopping me.”

25 YEARS OF INNOVATION – FROM LAPPMARK TO PRO HUNTER It began with the Lappmark suit in 1992: An extremely hardwearing suit, designed for professional hunters and to withstand the rugged Scandinavian landscape. In 2005, we continued the philosophy behind the original suit by creating the Pro Hunter range as we know it today. On the occasion of this quarter centenary, we talk to Kaj who has worn the Lappmark suit throughout all the 25 years.

”I’m the sort of person who always needs proper gear, no matter what it is. However, when I find something that fits me perfectly, I stick with it.”

How did your hunting life begin? ”The story is that my now departed wife and I lived on a lovely tree-lined farm in Ballerup near Copenhagen. We had fenced in about a hectare around the property and we kept sheep, ducks, geese and turkeys. Everything under the sun. The foxes, however, discovered it too, and the geese especially had a hard time. So my wife started to niggle at me. She was always one to encourage me and she reckoned I should get a hunting licence to put an end to the fox problem. Hunting was absolutely not in my blood, and neither my parents nor grandparents had ever hunted. Nothing much happened for the first couple of years but, on a New Year’s trip to our home-from-home in the Swedish countryside, a neighbour turned up with a pair of freshly felled deer. He reckoned that, since I now had a hunting licence, I could join their party and shoot some game next year. So it was; I went home and signed up for hunting lessons. In the first years, I shot a lot of pigeons on our little property in Denmark. An incredible number of them flew over. Then, of course, I also shot loads of foxes. Including those I trapped, I easily got more than a hundred foxes. There was a time when my hunting mates called me ”Kaj the fox”. The skins were often tanned, and I also had a couple of ”Davy Crockett” fur hats made, which I wear when it’s cold. However, the hunting bug soon caught on. Just the year after me, my eldest son Dan also got his hunting licence and then, in the following year, Dan’s wife and then my two other sons. My wife also got her hunting licence when she discovered that,

whenever we were all together as a family, we spent the whole time talking about hunting. She realised she might as well ‘join the club’. I never actually managed to get her out on a real hunt, but at least now she could always take part in the discussions. In 2000, my eldest grandchild, Christian, also got his licence when he turned 16. More grandchildren have followed on since.”

You have one of the first Härkila hunting suits. What’s the story behind your Lappmark suit? ”I’m the sort of person who always needs proper gear, no matter what it is. When I find something that fits me perfectly, though, I stick with it. That’s how it’s been with both my rifle and my hunting clothes. My Lappmark suit was my first proper set of hunting clothes, and I’ve had it since the beginning. I bought it from a retailer north of Copenhagen in the early 1990s, a couple of years after I got my licence. He warmly recommended it, saying it was the world’s best set of hunting clothes. The suit been with me for a good 25 years, almost all my hunting life. I’ve been incredibly happy with it, and the fit is amazing. The shopkeeper also talked me into buying a pair of braces. He said they’d go with the suit, and I haven’t regretted that either. After all these years, the suit is still 100% waterproof, but I have taken good care of it. It has all the pockets I need. Loads of pockets. Deep pockets. I actually wear it all year round, except for the really hot days in the Swedish buck hunt in August. This set of clothes makes for a good hunting companion: one you can rely on!”

How did the opportunity to hunt in Sweden come about, and what does it mean to you? ”In 1992, my eldest son, Dan, and I, along with our hunting mate, agreed to try to get our own hunting grounds in Sweden. I put an advert in the local press, and we got three responses, one of which sounded really promising. An area of about 90 hectares, just 30 km from our farm. After a viewing, we took up the offer. Later on, my brothers and a nephew came on board, and since then we have had 6-7 in the consortium. Just the family. We get on amazingly well together, and for me it’s a privilege to have three sons and now also two grandchildren to go hunting with. It’s incredible. Spending time on something we are all fond of and getting to know each other in a different way. I have always loved being out and about in the countryside and, as far as hunting goes, more than anything I enjoy the sounds and impressions at sunrise and sunset. It was when we started hunting in Sweden that I became seriously aware of the need for some hunting clothes that were durable and could be used for different types of hunt. It is asking a lot of clothing to both keep you warm and dry in a hunting tower and withstand the rigours of dense scrub and rocky pine forest. To my mind, my Lappmark suit is up to the job. In addition, it is also quite silent. When I go out walking with non-hunters, I am often the first one to notice the animals around us. However, my grandson, Christian, he’s now better than me these days. He’s the one that spots them first, the cheeky beggar. However, it’s all been drummed

into him since he was only five, when we started going out hunting as a family. To be honest, I reckon he’s the best hunter of us all. I like to think I’m the runner-up”, says Kaj with a laugh.

What sort of hunting or game do you prefer? ”Roe deer. I’ve shot a lot of roe deer. I must have shot 75, if not 100, in my time. Rifle hunting, though, is definitely what does it for me. I do enjoy stand hunting, and I’ve got the temperament to sit still and quietly. Maybe that’s also why I’ve shot so many foxes? Other than that, of course, I’m really into our Swedish elk hunt, which is a very special event. Although it only lasts a few days on our small-scale hunting grounds. My greatest hunting experience was actually also with an elk, and that wasn’t even what I was hunting. I was actually on a buck hunt down in the marsh one time in August, and suddenly this elk cow turns up about 20 or 30 metres from the tower. At that time, there was a salt stone on a rock just below the tower, which the elk went to lick. At one point she lay down so close that she actually nudged the tower I was sitting in. She lay there about 20 minutes chewing the cud before getting up and returning whence she’d come. Never for a minute did she notice me. This was an elk that I neither could nor wanted to shoot, but it was still an amazing experience.”

What does hunting and your place in Sweden mean to you and your family? ”It’s meant the world to us. We began building the hunting cabin in the summer of 2000, and we made it completely out of recycled materials we got from a local property that was being completely refurbished. I bought a large circular saw, and my wife and I just sawed up all the timber to the correct dimensions. Together with roofs, doors, floors, windows and a full kitchen, we drove it all up to the hunt in Sweden. We were hard at it that summer, and in the first week we had raised the walls and roofed it to keep the rain out. The rest of the work on the cabin took place over the following years. None of us like sitting still, so over the years we’ve added a veranda, outdoor kitchen and loads of other things. In the family, we try to get up there once a month in the hunting season, but we have also now started to go during the rest of the year since wild boar have started to come into the area. Both the cabin and location here are superb. Every time I’m here, I think about how privileged I am and have been in life. Getting on well with my family means the world to me, and I think what we have is quite unique. A lot of that is down to the hunting and our Swedish cabin.”

As I wave goodbye to Kaj and drive down the track on my way back to Denmark, I think about how special it is to have hunting as a leisure activity that is shared by the whole family of all ages. No life is lived without scars and wrinkles and, although Kaj’s 25-year-old Lappmark suit obviously has all the patina of use, the wear is a badge of honour for all the experiences it has given its owner. A stubborn stain on the jacket is a memory of a special cup of coffee after a successful elk hunt. A deep scratch, from a stubborn barbed wire fence, in the leather reinforcement on the trousers evokes memories of a thrilling roe deer stalk many years ago. Hunting has been a unifying pastime in Kaj’s family life, and I’m inspired by his zest for life and the sense of togetherness that nature here has engendered.

How HWS™ works HWS™ uses hydrophilic membranes that draw moisture out. The system keeps

the hunter dry by rapidly absorbing and removing perspiration. The moisture is wicked through the membrane and distributed over the surface, where it rapidly evaporates and stabilises the temperature inside the garment. At the same time, the holes in the membrane are so small that they prevent water molecules from entering from outside. This is an innovative technology in a robust construction that both enhances adaptability and protects the hunter from the elements.
