any people are aware of Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School’s construction project on 104th Street and Second Avenue. However, many are unaware of the process that takes place in order to make the project a success.

This construction project is part of a capital campaign. What is a capital campaign, you may ask? It is a timelimited effort by a non-profit organization to raise money for a specific project. Often, the money raised is for the acquisition, construc-

The goal for this campaign is to raise $20 million. Harlem RBI has already raised $15.3 million and the remaining $4.7 million will be raised over the course of 2013. Half of the money raised came from the Harlem RBI Board of Directors. The other half came from New York Yankees First Baseman, Mark Teixeira and his fundraising efforts. In an interview with Harlem RBI and DREAM’s Director of Development Megan Hodges I asked

about the most challenging aspect of this project. Megan replied, “It was tough to begin fundraising in a rough economy.” But Megan has also welcomed this challenge saying, “I loved meeting new donors. The real joy, however, comes in watching the progress. My favorite part is watching the building go up.” “We wanted the building to be in close proximity to the current Harlem RBI office and Field of Dreams,” said Liza Gray, Capital Projects Manager. “This was a requirement when Harlem RBI selected a location to build on. The space on 104th Street and Second Avenue was the best option.” Construction will finish in Fall 2014. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in February. This celebration gave the community a chance to come together and see the beginning of Harlem RBI and DREAM’s future home.

n October 29, Hurricane Sandy greatly affected New York City and neighboring states such as New Jersey and Connecticut. The super storm left many people without power. Some people even lost their homes. East Harlem was not hit very hard, and the boys from the Tigers and Stars teams decided to help the relief efforts.

Many Tigers and Stars teammates chipped in to plan this project. The TeamBuilders staff devoted workshops just for preparation. This was a time where the group strategically planned the battery drive to make it a huge success. To aid the drive, Harlem RBI staff posted a letter written by the Tigers and Stars on Facebook to ask the Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School community for help.

The planning stage involved collecting monetary donations to purchase cans, soliciting support from supermarkets for can donations and identifying cans with labels to match the design. Care and Connect contacted local supermarkets such as Whole Foods, Gristedes and Associated to buy the necessary cans. Then, they were ready to build.

The first step was to determine a theme for the sculpture. After numerous debates, the team chose to represent the Trayvon Martin tragedy as it was a relevant issue at the time. Communities throughout the world united to honor Trayvon Martin. The Care and Connect team wanted to replicate this unity by mobilizing the East Harlem community to fight hunger-related issues.

Once everyone arrived, we handed out the care packages to the students. The Peninsula Prep kids really enjoyed their care packages. The faces they had when they opened the packages were priceless. Everyone smiled! I could tell they were happy because we were thinking about them. I was glad that we could help them out.

After the presentation, we took a tour of the school. The building was really cool. It had three floors, if the basement counts as a floor. The students learned a lot while they were in class, just like at DREAM. The whole visit was like a dream! It made me think of what the new DREAM school building is going to look like. I hope it is just as awesome!

ormer New York Mets Pitcher, R.A. Dickey, came to DREAM Charter School on November 27! The Cy Young Award winner taught us how to throw a knuckleball and told us how important it is to read. He said, “When you read, you can do or be anything.” Mr. Dickey also told us his life story about how he experienced failure at first, but in 2012, he won the Cy Young Award. The Cy Young Award goes to the best pitcher in baseball. A few years ago, he did not even make the major leagues. Now, he is one of the best pitchers. That is a true underdog story!

Cy Young Winner R.A. Dickey visits DREAM students to read and deliver books as part of the Capital One and the Heart of America Foundation Book by Book Initiative.

Mr. Dickey is very famous for his knuckleball. He is the only pitcher in the major

leagues who knows how to throw this pitch. There is a special way to hold the baseball. He taught us the special way. He said you have to dig your fingernails into the stitching of the ball. He also said that it should not spin as much as a regular pitch. After Mr. Dickey finished reading us a book, he gave us books to keep! He handed them out, telling us to keep on reading because it is so important. Mr. Dickey gave over 1,200 books to all of us at DREAM. Mr. Dickey was so inspiring to us. He taught us many things about life, reading and school. Here’s the life lesson that I learned from his visit: It is not how you start that matters, it is how you finish.

Getting to Know DREAM Principal Eve Colavito By Imani Arias and Trinity Harris, 4th Grade

e sat down with the principal of DREAM Charter School, Eve Colavito. At first we were nervous because you do not get to meet important people like Eve every day. However, she has such a friendly personality that by the end of the conversation, it felt like we were talking to a close friend. First, we asked about her background. Before DREAM, she was the principal at a school in the Bronx. She was also a teacher before becoming a principal. She loved teaching math and writing. The next question we asked her was about her role as principal. We asked her why she likes her job. Eve said,

“I love to be around learning.” She does her best to make sure every DREAM student is prepared for life beyond the classroom. To Eve, “Teachers have the most important job in a school because they develop the relationships that are essential for positive growth.” Then, we talked about uniforms. We asked her why students at DREAM have to wear them. Eve replied, “It is important to have a uniform because it shows pride in your school and you do not have to spend time picking out your clothes! They also help to keep everyone focused on learning.” Lastly, we asked her how a student can be successful at DREAM.

Eve replied, “In order to achieve success at DREAM, DREAM Principal Eve Colavito greets each you need to scholar by name every morning as they enter live with the the school building. How do you use teamwork beyond the baseball field? By REAL Kids

Morgan, 2nd Grade: I use teamwork by following the rules my mom, my dad and my sister tell me. Like when my sister tells me not to bother her, I go and do my homework.

Sheron, 5th Grade: I use teamwork at home when I help my mother with dishes and chores.

William, 4th Grade: I am a team player at home when I help my mom with errands.

Angel, 2nd Grade: I help others when they need it. After Hurricane Sandy, my dad and I handed out supplies to people who needed them.

Grace, 5th Grade: When I’m in class, I always help my classmates cleanup. My teacher always likes to have a clean classroom!

Harlem RBI Turns a Possibility Into Reality

Taking Center Stage at Yankee Stadium

By Emily Peña, College Freshman

dent in myself and felt ready to share my experience in Harlem RBI.

By Gilbert Gonzalez, 12th Grade

I met the other Young Advisory Panelists from New York and London on November 11. We played soccer at DREAM, ate lunch at Harlem RBI and played softball with the REAL Kids staff on the Field of Dreams. Through these activities, we got to know each other. We shared stories of how we grew up, adversities we faced and successes we achieved. It was hard to believe that I shared so many similarities with people from a different country.

C

urrently, I am a senior in high school and will graduate in June 2013. In Fall 2013, I will attend college, largely because of Harlem RBI’s support. While I was applying to schools, I found many aspects of the process to be overwhelming. The thought of taking the SATs was scary, especially because I knew how important it was to the selection process. This, coupled with the pressure of writing the perfect college essay, made me feel burnt out. I felt anxious all the time, I was not social with my friends and I felt stressed. Harlem RBI assisted me in every way possible and helped me through this tough time. Tutors and staff members looked over my applications, read my college essays and helped me to study for the SATs. They continually checked in on me. The fact that the tutors and staff cared so much calmed me down. I still had one fear though. I did not know how I was going to pay for college tuition and other expenses. However, Harlem RBI had an answer for that as well. Through the Juma College Set program, Harlem RBI matches every dollar I put in up to $500. With the money I saved, I can potentially walk into college with at least $1,000 ready to spend on things I will need for college, such as textbooks or even a laptop. These past ten years at Harlem RBI opened many doors for me. A few years ago, college did not even cross my mind. Now, I turned that possibility into a reality. I am ready for the next big steps in my life like graduating high school and attending college.

Emily poses with the Beyond Sport Young Advisory Panel and REAL Kids Staff on the Field of Dreams.

I

recently had a chance to experience something rare. I was selected to be a member of the Beyond Sport Young Advisory Panel (YAP). This panel is a group of young people organized by Beyond Sport, an international organization that promotes, develops and supports the use of sports to create positive social change across the world. Members of the panel were chosen for overcoming adversity and becoming leaders in their communities through sports.

I was thrilled to be selected for the panel. After I accepted the nomination, I learned that I would represent YAP by speaking at the Beyond Sport Summit in front of 400 people at Yankee Stadium! I once spoke in front of an audience at Harlem RBI’s Volunteer Orientation Night, but it was only in front of 20 people. Although I was very nervous, Harlem RBI’s Communications team helped me prepare for the panel questions. With their guidance, I became confi-

From the Bronx to Mount Holyoke

The next day was the Beyond Sport Summit. I spoke on stage at Yankee Stadium, and it was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life. As I walked on stage and saw the bright lights shining, I felt nervous. However, once I started to speak, I felt comfortable. This not only gave me more experience with public speaking, but also boosted my self-confidence. Looking back, the best part of the day was when the audience started clapping after I shared my story. I even started to blush. I felt great to see so many friends and strangers supporting me!

By Marleny Heredia, College Freshman choosing a major and the difficulty of forming genuine friendships. As classes progressed, my gloomy spirit lifted. I started to relax about the future, I began to discover interests that I was passionate about and I found a solid group of friends. My professors were amazing and I loved being in class. In particular, I loved my International Relations class with Dr. Sohail Hashmi. Dr. Hashmi is one of the most intelligent professors I have ever met. Luckily for me, he is also my advisor. Already, he has taught me great study habits, new writing techniques and effective time management skills.

fter growing up in the South Bronx with cracked walls and fear of drugs and violence, I feel privileged to attend Mount Holyoke College. Not only does it have a beautiful campus, but it is also safe and welcoming. I feel at home here. This is truly an environment where I can achieve academic, emotional and social success. I first learned about Mount Holyoke during my junior year of high school. After researching the school and visiting the campus, I decided Mount

Holyoke was my dream school. I remember waiting anxiously for a response after sending my application. The months I waited for their decision felt like the longest of my life, but when I got my acceptance letter, I was full of joy. Not everyone can say they got into their dream school. I started at Mount Holyoke in January of 2012, a semester after the incoming freshman class. My first few weeks on campus were gloomy because I struggled with uncertainty about the future, uncertainty around

Thanks to Dr. Hashmi and the rest of the Mount Holyoke community, I have learned so much about myself such as the type of career I want to pursue, my interests and the goals I want to achieve. A few years ago, I dreamed of attending Mount Holyoke. I achieved that, and now I have another goal. I want to become fluent in Arabic. Currently, I am taking Arabic 101. This summer, I will be studying at the prestigious Middlebury Arabic Language School and learn from some of the most brilliant Arabic Professors in the United States. Most of all, it will help me to continue learning and dreaming!

Junior Girls Crowned Champions vision for the game. We imagined winning the championship and making not only our coach proud, but also winning for the rest of the East Harlem community. This was the first Junior Fall Ball team that made it this far, and we were proud of that. As we finished warming up, Coach Angel Perez called us to the dugout and said, “Today, let’s make Harlem RBI proud.” Then he read off the lineup, “Woizero, starting pitcher. Selase, catcher. Camille, first baseman. Hillary, second baseman…”

The playoff games were held at Dewey Field in Brooklyn. Cars were doubleparked. The stands were full. We were going to play Yorkville, a highly skilled team. But that did not matter. We were confident – we spent the entire season preparing for this day.

We ran onto the field charged with excitement. The game started. I pitched to the first batter, and struck her out. Once I got the ball back from Selase, I smiled at the rest of my teammates. They smiled back at me, and that was when I knew we were all on the same page. From the pitchers mound, I could hear my teammates’ words of encouragement. “You got this!” Hillary yelled. We were thinking and acting like a team.

As we warmed up, we discussed our

We did not rest on our laurels though.

t all started on October 22, a cool and windy Sunday morning. It was the day of the Junior Fall Ball League Championship. We woke up that morning and said, “We will win this game and become the 2012 Junior Team Champions.”

Throughout the game, we all kept Coach Angel’s words in mind. He always told us to “breathe and believe.” That is exactly what we did. Through six innings, we held the lead. In the bottom of the sixth and final inning, the only thing stopping us from winning the championship was three outs. The first batter came up and hit the ball to Hillary for a routine ground out. The second out was a ground out fielded by the catcher, Selase. At this point, the crowd went wild, but Coach Angel wanted us to stay calm. “Breathe and believe!” He yelled from the dugout. “Breathe and believe, ladies!” The final batter worked a full count. Everyone gasped as I threw the last pitch. With a blink, the batter swung and the umpire shouted, “Strike three, you’re out!” We all felt a rush of excitement. The team ran to the pitcher’s mound, where we all jumped and cheered. Everyone was proud. Coach Angel was incredibly happy. We won a championship, and it was a great reason to celebrate.

It’s Cold Outside! TeamBuilders Participate in Winter Fitness Programs I By Devin Rudolph, 7th Grade

n order to help kids like me stay in shape during the cold winter months, the Baseball and Softball staff at Harlem RBI run winter fitness classes and clinics. These programs help participants develop their baseball knowledge. Vince Coleman, Harlem RBI’s Baseball and Softball Director, said, “I love to help kids improve in the mental aspect of baseball and softball, like how to be prepared, be a good teammate and develop positive attitudes. In the winter, a lot of young players forget these aspects of the game. That is the purpose of fitness classes and clinics. We want to instill good baseball habits in our players.”

During the first month of fitness training, Coaches Yeison Pimentel and Jason Polanco led us in stretches and core workout exercises like push-ups, squats and up-and-downs. Then we divided into stations. These stations focused on developing quickness, endurance and strength through sprinting drills and cardio workouts. At first, we all struggled because we were out of shape. However, after a few classes, I noticed that we were getting quicker.

Some of the slower guys began running faster. The faster guys ran even faster. I felt like I could beat some of my coaches in a race!

After a month of these fitness programs, baseball clinics started every Monday for the boys. Clinics, led by Coaches Angel Perez and Steven Blitzer, helped us work on specific skills such as hitting, fielding and throwing. My teammates and I were full of energy, ready to engage in clinics. The schedule was the same every day. Stretching came first, then running workouts and lastly, stations. These stations focused on specific skills. For example, in one of the stations, we practiced fielding ground balls. These clinics and fitness classes prepared us for the upcoming season. Since the field is closed during the winter, we played whiffle ball in the gym at the end of fitness and clinics so that players could experience what it is like to play in a real game. This especially helped us grow accustomed to the speed of a live game. I can’t wait to go outside and play on the field once the weather gets warmer!

Coach Angel Perez gives a pep talk to TeamBuilders before a winter baseball clinic.

ABOUT HARLEM RBI AND DREAM CHARTER SCHOOL

We’RE EXPANDING! There are many communities in this country that can benefit from a Harlem RBI program. One of these communities is right in our backyard: the Mott Haven section of the South Bronx. For the first time, Harlem RBI will expand its services outside of East Harlem and deliver the REAL Kids (Reading Enrichment and Learning) Program to this new neighborhood. REAL Kids is a nationally-recognized reading and literacy program for youth in grades K-5. This summer, youth in the South Bronx will participate in literacy enrichment and teambuilding activities that develop academic, social and emotional skills in a learning, safe and fun environment, while also playing on a baseball team. For 22 years, Harlem RBI has inspired youth in East Harlem to Play, Learn and Grow. By expanding Harlem RBI’s programs to the South Bronx, even more young people will recognize their potential and realize their dreams. We’re excited for this opportunity to expand our work. And more than ever, we are inspired to make what we do each and every day even better.

Harlem RBI, a 501(c)3 non profit organization, began in 1991 when a group of volunteers transformed an abandoned, garbage-strewn lot into two baseball diamonds for the youth of East Harlem. Since then, Harlem RBI has grown to serve more than 1,200 boys and girls, ages 5-22, with year-round academic, sports and enrichment programs. Harlem RBI’s comprehensive approach to youth development replaces the barriers inner-city youth typically face with concrete opportunities to build the skills and confidence needed to graduate high school, matriculate to college and break the cycle of poverty. Since 2005, 96% of Harlem RBI seniors have graduated high school, 93% of seniors have been accepted into college and 99% of participants have avoided teen parenthood. In 2008, after 17 years of working in East Harlem and producing exceptional results, Harlem RBI opened DREAM Charter School. DREAM’s mission is to prepare students for high-performing high schools, colleges and beyond through a rigorous academic program that develops critical thinkers who demonstrate a love of learning, strong character, and a commitment to wellness and active citizenship. DREAM Charter School inspires all students to recognize their potential and realize their dreams. Today the school serves 300 students and will grow one grade each year until it reaches capacity at 450 students, grades K-8. www.harlemrbi.org
