2012:

HARLEM RBI DREAM CHARTER SCHOOL

Making Dreams Real For over 21 years, Harlem RBI has provided thousands of youth in East Harlem with opportunities to Play, Learn and Grow. And we are proud to report that 2012 has been our best year yet. DREAM Charter School earned an “A from the New York City Department of Education. On state tests, DREAM ranked second out of 90 NYC charter schools in English Language Arts improvement and sixth in math improvement. In a district where only 33 percent of adults have a high school diploma and only 10 percent are college graduates, Harlem RBI participants have maintained a high school graduation rate of 96 percent and a college acceptance rate of 93 percent since 2005. And as we break ground on a new home for Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School, the future has never looked bigger or brighter. 2012 also brought great accolades and external validation. Harlem RBI was honored as a Robin Hood Hero, a winner of the SEG Foundation Excellence in Action Award and a winner of the Nonprofit Excellence Award given by the Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York. Harlem RBI was also awarded the PropelNext grant from the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, our first ever major national grant and an exciting first step as we move toward scaling our work into new communities in 2013. Harlem RBI is accomplishing great things, and is still striving to do more. With the opening of our first replication site in the South Bronx next year, the challenges we face have never been greater, nor more inspiring. And while we expand to new communities, rest assured that back home in East Harlem, we continue to invest in the people, practice and promise that make what we do each and every day even better. With your help, we are making dreams real. Thank you for joining us, and thank you for your continued support.

WINNING THE GAME WASN’T THE END

My twin brother Shaq and I started at Harlem RBI when we were nine. Even when we moved out of our apartment near the Field of Dreams, we still kept coming because we loved it so much. Back then, all I wanted to do was play ball. I had no idea what opportunities Harlem RBI was going to provide me. Fast forward to my senior year. A group of Morehouse students came to my school to talk about their college experience. I knew that Morehouse was the place for me. And when I didn’t get in, I was devastated. But I was told that if I enrolled in the school's summer program and did well, I could be admitted in the fall. The summer program was expensive, but Harlem RBI helped me get there. I am now finishing my first semester at Morehouse. Harlem RBI was already building bridges to Atlanta, so by the time I arrived, everyone from the Dean’s Office to the Atlanta Housing Authority already knew my name. Before I left for college, my team, made up of the same Harlem RBI teammates I had played with since the sixth grade, took the New York City RBI Championships. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to cap off 10 years at Harlem RBI. But I also know that given the places Harlem RBI has taken me, and all the ways I want to give back, winning that game wasn’t the end of anything—not even close. Program Legends (Morehouse College)

EFFORT AND TEAMWORK ON A DAILY BASIS

WORKING TOGETHER FOR IMPACT

I joined Harlem RBI because my dad and I used to play baseball all the time in Central Park. I started in the program with REAL Kids and now I’m on the Tigers team, in TeamBuilders. Over the years, my Harlem RBI coaches made me into a better player and pushed me to become a better student. I like that I can get help with schoolwork here. We have study hall every day after school where staff and volunteers help us with our homework. Even when I don’t ask, the tutors approach me first to see if I need help. Last year, I finished the school year with a 90 average! Brett Gurwitz, TeamBuilders Program Manger, remarks, “Ivan is a model representative of Harlem RBI. In his quiet manner, he leads his team by example, showing effort and teamwork on a daily basis. Ivan stands out as he consistently represents these values and shows respect to both peers and adults. As a result, he was recently awarded a scholarship to attend the national Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation Summer Camp. It was not surprising to us that Ivan was named MVP out of the entire camp on the last day! That’s just the kind of kid Ivan is.” Program TeamBuilders

TeaCHER/COACH

As a certified third grade teacher in the Bronx, I battle summer learning loss every fall when my students return from vacation. For three years, I spent my summers as a REAL Kids literacy workshop teacher to help prevent that loss among Harlem RBI youth. The best part? Seeing all those kids reading in their baseball or softball uniforms every morning! While teachers aren’t required to stay for the afternoon baseball and softball portion of the day, as a long-time softball player, I found myself going to the games to watch and cheer on my team and more often than not, coach from the bleachers. As the line between my role as a teacher and a “coach” began to blur, I finally got myself off the bleachers and onto the sideline and became a volunteer softball coach. Coaching and giving players the opportunity to rise up with a single team until they graduate from high school is really exciting. Growing up, my softball coaches always influenced me, both negatively and positively, so I get the significance of this role. At the end of the day, whether you’re a teacher or a coach at Harlem RBI, you make a huge impact on kids’ lives. Harlem RBI is very special. Everyone works together for the kids, and I’m happy to be a part of that.

BUILDING A HEALTHY, CONFIDENT CULTURE

HARLEM RBI

THE WAY

PEOPLE

The BASE is Harlem RBI’s youth-led peer education program which works to increase awareness about sexual health issues. In a community that has the second highest teenage pregnancy rate and the second highest number of AIDS cases in New York City, The BASE participants provide compelling workshops and outreach campaigns, and serve as healthy role models. I love seeing our young people transform right before us. They come in shy and nervous and then build confidence through group work and open dialogue. A 14-year-old girl who bravely tells her boyfriend she wants to wait to have sex grows up to be a woman who can take a leadership role on a college campus. A 17-year-old boy who sees how HIV has affected his community will not mess around when it comes to safe sex and will educate his younger brother to do the same. The BASE is building a healthy, caring and confident culture while taking on the toughest issues in the community. I’m humbled and honored to lead this program.

BRINGING SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL TO EAST HARLEM

I enjoy seeing so many kids in this neighborhood wearing Harlem RBI baseball and softball uniforms. Harlem RBI adds to the color and flavor of East Harlem, and I can see that they are doing great things in the community. I’ve lived in East Harlem since I was eight years old when my parents moved to Wagner Houses. I remember watching television when an announcer said there’s “a bad side of New York”—and there on the screen flashed my favorite neighborhood bodega. Since then, I dreamed of bringing something beautiful to East Harlem. East Harlem Café is a great place for the community to gather. I love seeing the staff of Harlem RBI and DREAM at my café for meetings or a quiet workspace. I know they are helping East Harlem become a better and safer place, and I’m happy to contribute in this way. East Harlem Café is always open to Harlem RBI and DREAM!

VALUABLE RESOURCES FOR MY FUTURE Harlem RBI has been my safe space, my home and my community since I was 12 years old. At a young age, I was an angry person dealing with my parents breaking up. I got into fights all the time. I had to take a couple of breaks from Harlem RBI in high school, but it was always there for me when I came back. After graduating from high school, I struggled for two years trying to enroll into college and obtain financial aid due to various family issues. I came back to Harlem RBI once more to start meeting with Stephanie Cowling, Legends Program Coordinator. In order to get me into school, she went in and out of courtrooms with me, found valuable resources to assist me and eventually helped me enroll. Now, two years later, I am one course away from earning my Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Monroe College. The next step for me is a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Social Work! Growing up in East Harlem, I know what the neighborhood is like for kids. This makes me want to graduate so I can give back. I will always be a part of Harlem RBI.

OUR APPROACH Culture of Achievement

Academic excellence is at the center of DREAM’s culture. Students are held accountable for completing their work, participating and reaching their goals. At DREAM, young scholars learn joyfully and success is celebrated.

Curriculum That Drives Rigor DREAM curriculum motivates students to apply higher-level thinking, analytical problem solving and greater independence. Teachers ensure that students are responsible for their own learning and hold students to high standards at all times.

Responsive Intervention Before students fall behind, DREAM teachers catch them. Small learning groups are flexible, allowing for individualized and targeted instruction. Teachers make sure academic gaps are addressed early, using multiple modes of intervention so that scholars receive the appropriate attention at the right time.

MAKING DREAMS REAL

2012 was a banner year for DREAM Charter School— DREAM received an “A” from the New York City Department of Education, and on state tests, DREAM students achieved the following results:

• Fourth graders increased their

proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA) by 154%—the second highest improvement out of 90 New York City charter schools.

• Fourth graders increased

their proficiency in Math by 91%—the sixth highest improvement citywide.

• The 2012 third grade cohort had 93% more students proficient in ELA and 45% more students proficient in math than the 2011 third grade cohort.

• In both English and Math, DREAM fourth graders outperformed the school district average and the New York City average.

Before I took my state tests last year, I was a little nervous. But I felt more confident taking the tests because my teachers helped me to prepare and practice. I was happy to know that the whole school wanted me to do my best, and I coudn't let them down.

Last spring, we went on a class trip to Washington D.C. and visited the University of Maryland. The food was really good on campus and the dorms were nice. When I stepped into one of the rooms, I thought, my parents HAVE to see this! One day, it’s going to be my room, my bed, my posters and my pictures. I’m excited about getting older because I can do so much more!

At DREAM, I like that we have a lot of fun but get into serious mode to learn more. We also learn about values. My favorite is “respect” because it’s the way you behave toward another person. The teachers at DREAM are always respectful to me and they encourage me to never give up.

My daughter Araya loves DREAM. It was important for me to find the perfect school for her, and I am so happy we found DREAM. It’s our new family. When I was growing up, the principal only knew the bad kids. But at DREAM, Prinicpal Eve knows everybody by name, even the parents. She’s easy to approach and I can talk to her about anything. And the teachers are always available. Last year, Araya had difficulty with reading and her teachers met with her everyday before school at 7:45 in the morning to provide the extra help she needed. It was amazing to see Araya use many different strategies to improve her reading skills. In just three months, she jumped up six reading levels! Every day at DREAM, there are endless possibilities for my daughter. She’s going to have the best day, the best conversations, and the best education. A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO EDUCATION I have been teaching at DREAM Charter School since it opened in 2008. From that first year, I have always set high goals for my students. I want my students to be self-motivated to learn, to listen and to comprehend the content and context of their lessons. I want my DREAMers to be lifelong learners. This year, my fourth grade students met these goals and exceeded my expectations. As a result, our challenging and comprehensive curriculum helped DREAMers outperform the school district and New York City averages in both math and science. While state test results are important measures to compare our progress to that of other schools, DREAM’s strengths lie in our holistic approach to student development. Extracurricular activities such as music, theater and sports allow our students to develop self-esteem and confidence outside of the classroom, helping them to find success in it. DREAM further encourages student development through an inclusive method that allows general education students to learn side by side with special education students. The DREAM team is dedicated to working together and providing a well-rounded education for our students and inspire them to achieve their best. RESOURCEFUL, STRATEGIC, EFFICIENT. A PROPiTIOUS CYCLE OF STEADY GROWTH For the 16th consecutive year, Harlem RBI has increased annual revenue. Harlem RBI’s fiscal prudence and ability to expand its donor base has enabled the organization to enhance programs and serve more youth over the years. With the resources available to deliver better programming, the organization achieved greater outcomes. And Harlem RBI has remained accountable to its donors with over 80% of funds dedicated to program services. This propitious cycle has allowed Harlem RBI to develop bigger and broader plans for the future of the organization. In 2012, Harlem RBI and DREAM launched a bold strategic plan that outlines the completion of a capital project, and the expansion of Harlem RBI’s award-winning programs both locally and nationally. As the organization begins to take the steps necessary to achieve this vision and future growth, Harlem RBI and DREAM will remain fiscally prudent to ensure sustainability.

Chris Leonard, Harlem RBI Board Member and Treasurer says, “It is an honor to serve on Harlem RBI’s Board and I am extremely proud to support such an impactful and effective organization. There is a great need for Harlem RBI, in East Harlem and in many other cities. And we will continue to require additional resources to meet this demand. I hope donors will continue to support Harlem RBI and take part in enabling more youth to recognize their potential and realize their dreams."

THE WAY: PROMISE

STRATEGIC PLAN Harlem RBI’s 2012–2016 Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap for the expansion of services within the East Harlem community, to the South Bronx and eventually to other U.S. cities. While the organization will continue to deliver and enhance its high quality programming in East Harlem, it will also bring its exemplary program model to youth in other communities for the first time. Harlem RBI is proud to report that it is well on track to successfully meeting goals outlined in the strategic plan.

people are what make it happen Talent Development supports and develops staff across the organization in order to:

STAFF

Coming to work every day should be exciting. Working here should never feel like 'just a job.' It should be a place where you are learning, growing, and making a meaningful impact all at once. What does all of this mean? It means our youth experience a continuity of support over time. As our young people grow from Kindergarteners to college graduates, our staff grows along with them. It means young people see strong leadership modeled before their eyes—which better prepares them to be leaders themselves. The more effective we are at leading, managing change, developing others, and accomplishing our goals, the better we are able to serve our youth.

• ensure hiring of high performers who also have high potential to grow within or beyond their positions • increase professional development opportunities for all staff • grow staff satisfaction and retention • improve staff performance • ensure the organization is ready for future growth Talent Development offers growth opportunities for all employees and maintains a culture of feedback and accountability so that along with its participants, staff learn to recognize their potential and realize their dreams

CAPITAl campaign PROGRESS

HARLEM RBI

Ilene Brettler, DREAM parent, has lived in Washington Houses for 26 years and her daughter Jolita has been attending DREAM Charter School since it opened in 2008. "I'm excited about the new building. When people in the neighborhood see the new school and housing they will know that good things are happening here. This project is good fo r o u r future and the future of our children."

PROMISE

Last year, Harlem RBI and DREAM Charter School launched a capital campaign to fund the development of an innovative mixed-use facility for the community of East Harlem. In addition to providing Harlem RBI and DREAM with a state-of-the-art home, this visionary project will provide community space, increase affordable housing, renovate a public park and create jobs for the community.

OUR BEST MOMENt IS YET TO COME I’ve been giving to Harlem RBI for years—even before Rich Berlin came along! In the earlier days my contribution was a big percentage of the organization’s revenue. It’s nice to see that my percentage has dropped considerably since then, even though I’m giving more. As Harlem RBI grew, it never overreached. No matter how good the previous year was, Harlem RBI remained cautiously optimistic and continued to quietly do its work in East Harlem. Now, the quality of the program speaks for itself, and that’s why I’ve continued to be a donor for so many years. I’m involved with many charities, and none is more effective than Harlem RBI. My son Tom is now a Harlem RBI donor and a member of the All-Star committee, despite my attempt to convince him to go the other way. I told him to focus on work first, and then make a contribution later when he’s older and more successful. Instead he followed my example. He saw this organization doing great things and gravitated toward it. I’ve been around a long time and I’ve witnessed what this organization has accomplished. But even with all of the success at Harlem RBI, I believe our best moment is yet to come. Role Harlem RBI Board Member Years of Support Seventeen

tHE REWARD IS REALLY OURS Stephen: As a Harlem RBI volunteer, I was able to coach the same team from the time they were sixth graders till they graduated from high school. I got to watch them grow up into young men. Nicky: At that time, I was working at CoreNet. We held an annual outing that donated a portion of the proceeds to a chosen non-profit organization. That’s when Stephen told me about Harlem RBI. I was happy to nominate the organization after learning more about its mission. Stephen: One of the requirements of being a beneficiary of the outing was to send volunteers to the event. Nicky: The kids from Harlem RBI were the best volunteers we ever had. They were cheerful, enthusiastic and engaged. I was so impressed with them. Stephen: After the team I was coaching won the championship, I thought, “What can I do next?” And since Nicky was also a fan of Harlem RBI, we thought about sponsoring a team. Nicky: A girls’ team. Stephen: Yes, a girls’ team. So we’ve been doing that for the past six years. Team sponsorship isn’t just about making a donation. Nicky and I sponsor a team and— Nicky: —A girls’ team Stephen: Yes, a girls’ team, and we get invited to all kinds of events: Uniform Night, games, Trophy Night and graduation. Nicky: I knew I loved Harlem RBI when I climbed up five flights of stairs to see their graduation. Stephen: She would never climb five flights for me! Nicky: We’re happy to support Harlem RBI, but the reward is really ours. Role Team Sponsors
