Silk & Stone is the next stage in Amira Medunjanin’s journey to bring Sevdah, the musical style that is the beating heart of Bosnia, to the world. OSTAD ELAHI This commemorative 2CD-Book has been created in conjunction with a special exhibition presented by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York - the first American exhibition examining the transformative music and life of Ostad Elahi (1895-1974), a renowned Persian musician whose works have been authoritatively documented by Le Chant du Monde. Available internationally, the release offers a unique window into the inner states and spiritual landscapes that Ostad Elahi began experiencing as a child prodigy and continued to explore until the end of his life. After listening to this music, you will appreciate why his art of the tanbur lute provides an expressive avenue to embark on this extraordinary journey. The pieces presented on these two CDs were recorded in Ostad Elahi’s home in Tehran between the years 1965 and 1970. The fourth edition again presents a diverse selection of international, Swedish, traditional and modern carols and atmospheric secular popular songs, with the familiar hushed and intimate mood we have come to know and love. Nils Landgren understands like few other band leaders how to put his comrades into the limelight, to give them the freedom to stamp their personalities on the music: Jessica Pilnäs shines with her mellow, crystal-clear voice, complemented by the soulful timbre of Ida Sand, who also takes charge of the piano. Soprano Jeanette Köhn lends especially the traditional Christmas carols the necessary classical emphasis, and Sharon Dyall provides the bluesy touch, like on Odetta's "If Anybody Asks You". With his tastefully reduced acoustic guitar accompaniment, Johan Norberg injects the folk-music influence and builds the harmonious foundation, perfectly supplemented by Eva Kruse with her restrained and creamy bass. The jazzy embellishments from Johan Knutsson's saxophone set the interpretations alight and give them magnitude and candour. And over and over, Nils Landgren's butter-soft trombone punctuates the atmospheric music, and his typically fragile vocals touch the soul, for example in the intimate duet with Johan Norberg on his own composition "I Wish It Was Christmas". Blue Camus BEN SIDRAN The Times called Ben Sidran “the first existentialist jazz rapper.” BLUE CAMUS, the follow up to DONT CRY FOR NO HIPSTER, moves Ben Sidran further in that direction where jazz meets poetry, philosophy and politics, combining ready grooves with big ideas and a sense of humor. Alloy TYSHAWN SOREY Alloy is the highly anticipated new release from drummer/composer Tyshawn Sorey, his first as a leader since his Oblique-I topped multiple critics’ polls as one of the best releases of 2011. Named one of “Five Drummers Whose Time is Now” by The New York Times, Sorey, in addition to being one of the most in-demand drummers on the scene playing with the likes of Vijay Iyer, Steve Coleman, Steve Lehman and Myra Melford, also holds a masters from Wesleyan University and is currently in the doctoral program at Columbia University. As a sideman, Sorey is known for his impossibly virtuosic technique, mixing rapid-fire playing with power and tumultuous eruptions. One might expect Sorey’s compositions to mirror the vigor of his drum playing, but instead, they more often evince a pensive beauty, with the feeling of wading into waters in search of a mystery deep below its surface. At the End of the Day FEDERICO CASAGRANDE The latest work of guitarist Federico Casagrande is an unending surprise, a journey that may lead you to a different place each time. It goes along and flirts with your current mood, diverting and involving you in unexpected digressions. In this endeavour Casagrande conspires with Michele Rabbia on percussion and electronics, Vincent Courtois on cello and Vincent Peirani on accordion. “At The End Of The Day” is the second recording led by Casagrande to be released on CAM JAZZ, after “The Ancient Battle Of The Invisible” that sparked so much interest a couple of years ago. The other group members are different, the ambiance is different, but the inspiration remains unchanged and leads the guitarist to compose a recording of great depth.

This is evocative music. “Once Upon A Time” is the opening track and recollects cinema settings. “Let’s Go See Around The Corner” follows close behind and really makes you feel like peeping to see what’s happening. Contemporary guitar music, as he puts it, of which he explores any and all expressive abilities - from the stripped down sound in “Some More, Please” to the charm of “Can You See It?” (the only piece written with Michele Rabbia) - that let the six-string instrument emerge from an intriguing, tumbling mass of sound. “Maybe Not This Time” is a wonderful haven of quietness one should listen to again and again. Both “Melancholia” and “It’s All So Rarified Out There” convey suspension, a kind of waiting feeling, with a slight tinge of uneasiness. In “So Clear You Speak” a captivating interaction between guitar and cello heralds the closing track, “All That’s Left Behind”, a sumptuous, fitting conclusion to this exciting, hypnotic album. Tiddy Boom MICHAEL BLAKE The New York City based saxophonist Michael Blake has built his reputation by producing albums that "make the familiar sound fresh" (Jim Macnie, Downbeat). That statement couldn't apply better than to Blake's new release, Tiddy Boom, his nod to the magnificent tenor saxophone innovators Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. The session sounds like a classic recording date from the 1950s or 1960s. Tiddy Boom reunites Blake with two of his former Jazz Composers Collective colleagues, bassist Ben Allison and pianist Frank Kimbrough, who, along drummer Rudy Royston, provide effortless support for Blake’s tenor sax to flow in any direction he chooses on his program of all original compositions.

Peace DAYNA STEPHENS Saxophonist Dayna Stephens has developed into one of the most important saxophone stylists playing today, with a lush tone on tenor, soprano, and baritone saxophones. For his new recording, Peace, Stephens focuses on interpreting intimate and heartfelt compositions that harken to the major ballad players, like Lester Young, Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon. But Stephens’s inspirations go a step further. The ballad singing of vocalist Luther Vandross has always haunted the saxophonist and influenced his sound on ballads, not to mention the undeniable inspiration garnered from balladeers Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Stephens is fortunate to feature another one of his influences on Peace, the fantastic pianist Brad Mehldau, whose ballad playing is especially remarkable. Producer Matt Pierson’s influence was instrumental in helping to shape the album and smooth the recording process, evolving their concept into this balanced recording of soulful pieces featuring Stephens on tenor, soprano, and baritone. Stephens and Pierson selected tunes and personnel, developing a program of varied yet attractive pieces expertly played and fantastically recorded in the inspiring environs of The Clubhouse recording studio in Rhinebeck, New York.

Songs of Time Lost PIERS FACCINI & VINCENT SEGAL Piers Faccini and Vincent Segal met in Paris in the late 1980s and have been friends ever since. Songs of Time Lost is their first joint album. Using voice, guitar and cello - and in a variety of languages from English to Neapolitan dialect and Creole - the album brings together original compositions, traditional songs and some covers. Why did the two musicians wait twenty-five years? Piers and Vincent are great believers in things taking the time they need. And it takes time to make sense of the world’s music, to refine performance, to absorb the complexity of songs. Songs of Time Lost is focused on the moment, but with over two decades of joint performances, friendship and mutual understanding behind it, binding the whole together. Since recording his debut solo album in 2003 ‘Leave no Trace’ Faccini has come to be recognized worldwide as a fine singer-songwriter at the cusp of pop and folk. In 2013 he started up his own label Beating Drum and in the same year released his acclaimed fifth solo album ‘Between Dogs and Wolves.’

Vincent Segal is a French cellist immersed in a variety of music traditions, from his dance/electronica duo Bumcello to his collaboration with Ballaké Sissoko on the acclaimed Chamber Music album, and with a host of luminaries including Blackalicious, Cesaria Evora, Sting, Marianne Faithfull and Elvis Costello. Songs of Time Lost is their first joint album. Using voice, guitar and cello - and in a variety of languages from English to Neapolitan dialect and Creole - the album brings together original compositions, traditional songs and some covers. Why did the two musicians wait twenty-five years? Piers and Vincent are great believers in things taking the time they need. And it takes time to make sense of the world’s music, to refine performance, to absorb the complexity of songs. Songs of Time Lost is focused on the moment, but with over two decades of joint performances, friendship and mutual understanding behind it, binding the whole together.

Since recording his debut solo album in 2003 ‘Leave no Trace’ Faccini has come to be recognized worldwide as a fine singer-songwriter at the cusp of pop and folk. In 2013 he started up his own label Beating Drum and in the same year released his acclaimed fifth solo album ‘Between Dogs and Wolves.’ Vincent Segal is a French cellist immersed in a variety of music traditions, from his dance/electronica duo Bumcello to his collaboration with Ballaké Sissoko on the acclaimed Chamber Music album, and with a host of luminaries including Blackalicious, Cesaria Evora, Sting, Marianne Faithfull and Elvis Costello.
