Tango YASMIN LEVY An internationally renowned story-teller, singer-songwriter and vocalist Yasmin Levy should really need no introduction. Over the course of five remarkable albums and countless world tours, her deep spiritual singing and passionate vocal delivery have made her that rarity, a true international star. Tango is thus Levy’s sixth album and whilst her preceding one, Libertad, established her as a singer-songwriter of real repute, drawing heavily on the influences of both Spanish and Turkish music as well as featuring her trademark Ladino songs, here she introduces us to another of her great passions, with an album, and accompanying concert DVD, of sublimely arranged and passionately performed Argentinean Tango. It is a brave move, but one that shouldn’t surprise us. For Levy is an artist who refuses to stand still, from her breakthrough as a re-inventor of Ladino, via her forays into Persian and Turkish song and her own flamenco influenced originals, she is an artist always on the lookout for new challenges, new ways to express the melancholic beauty at the heart of her beguiling art.

FM Biography JOHANNA BORCHERT This pianist and singer/songwriter from Germany, although not yet well-known beyond her home borders, has enlisted A-league help on this brooding and darkly elegant mix-up of jazz and Americana. Fred Frith needs no introduction, a veteran of innumerable avant-rock, avant-everything projects. Shahzad Ismaily is a multi-instrumentalist and sideman for Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Will Oldham, Marianne Faithfull, Patti Smith and many more. He plys guitar, bass and synths here and produced the album. Johanna Borchert is mostly known through her bands Schneeweiss & Rosenrot and Little Red Suitcase, with whom she toured a lot through many European countries, but also Asia, the USA and Canada. In October 2012 she released her debut as a piano soloist, named „Orchestre Ideal“. Borchert sings entirely in English on these ten self-composed tracks, whose titles - Wide Land, Desert Road, Long Lane Frame etc - foretell the spatial vista of the music. With musical capabilities in abundance, Johanna Borchert will not remain unknown for long.

Nils Landgren is a name that has become synonymous with versatility, curiosity and vigour. Whether with his Funk Unit, his jazz ballad projects, big bands or his countless other contributions as sideman, soloist and bandleader – the likable Swede with the bright red trombone has constantly been on the move for more than 30 years. He is one of the most successful European jazz musicians, born Värmland in 1956, Landgren has made around 550 records and received a plethora of jazz awards and other honours, including the Swedish Grammy for his lifetime achievement. And at his side for the last two decades: ACT Music. The first time Siggi Loch heard Landgren play was at the JazzBaltica in 1994, with the band that at the time was still simply called "Unit". It was to be the beginning of a loyal partnership for life, "Call it what it is" Loch said to him succinctly after the rousing concert. Funk Unit was born and a beautiful collaboration along with it. Wildern TOBIAS CHRISTL Tobias Christl, born 1978, is a rarity, a singer the likes of which there never was before in German jazz. Neither a crooner nor a scatter, and least of all a pop musician disguised as a jazzer. Much more a storyteller, somewhere between indie and improvisation. A Berliner by choice, Christl is a vocal artist, a songwriter, improviser, speaker, composer, DJ and cofounder of the Cologne KLAENG collective. He plays piano and keyboards, clarinet and guitar, and studied, among others, under Theo Bleckmann in New York.

"Wildern" (poaching) is the title of his ACT Young German Jazz debut. Why? "What we like to hunt most are good songs", he says. The Oversoul Manual DARIUS JONES The Oversoul Manual is the fourth installment / revelation in Darius Jones’ central, highly acclaimed, and on-going Man’ish Boy epic. It further reveals and indeed fully features the great talents of Jones as composer & arranger, with daring originality, conceptual richness and deep emotive power to the fore -- as ever in his profound body of work. In The Dreamworld SUN TRIO An alienating, evocative, liquid sound: the electronically filtered trumpet in “Waves” opens the new work of Sun Trio, the third CD released on CAM JAZZ after “Time Is Now” and “Dreams Are True”. The Finnish trio confirms itself as an avid experimenter of sounds, between beautiful moments of calmness and suspension, typical of Nordic jazz, and incursions of intriguing, magnetic rhythms. Jorma Kalevi Louhivuori, on trumpet, composed most of the pieces, well-backed by his drummer brother, Olavi (having made his mark in a Scandinavian trio with Claudio Filippini and Palle Danielsson) and Antti Lötjönen on bass.

“Dark Forest” is an obsessive rhythm of drums, sporadic strokes of double bass and electronic digressions of a sometimes unrecognizable trumpet. “Travelling” brings us back to more classical jazz, while “Narrow Mind” explores new territories of experimentation, such as the guitar-like nuances of the trumpet, with the skilful use of the wah-wah. A slight uneasiness runs through all seven minutes of “Unknown”, then giving way to the first composition by Olavi, the exotic “Soleil d’Afrique”. The airy melody of title track “In The Dreamworld”, creates an intriguing contrast to the next track, “Old Devil’s Boogie”, a piece by the drummer, hinting at the world of Don Cherry, the guru of all trumpeters who want to venture into free jazz, in a trio, for example. “Sightseeing” may be the theme recovery of “Travelling”, while “Sunson” is Lötjönen’s contribution to the compositions of the trio. “Little One”, in name and fact, and “Searching For Your Path” are conclusions to an extremely interesting work, made of instinct and rarefied atmospheres, creative impetus and hypnotic musical interlocks. In Convergence Liberation HAFEZ MODIRZADEH feat. ETHEL In Convergence Liberation represents the latest step in saxophonist/ composer/theorist HafezModirzadeh’s thirty-year quest to create a seamless exchange between the world’s different musical cultures. It follows on the heel of his 2012 release Post Chromodal Out!, which featured a piano retuned to variations of Persian temperament as played by Vijay Iyer that the Los Angeles Times called “thick with inspiration” and the San Jose Mercury News called “visionary.” The new work further explores Modirzadeh’s concept of “chromodality,” a cross-cultural musical approach that allows for the co-existence between different musical temperaments from around the world, which Modirzadeh originally derived from his own American jazz and Iranian dastgah heritages.

Talisman SAMMY FIGUEROA & GLAUCIA NASSER Famed jazz percussionist and Savant double-Grammy nominee Sammy Figueroa and Brazilian singer-songwriter Glaucia Nasser got together in Sao Paolo and created an album that presents a perfect balance of great musicianship and soaring vocals. Featuring guitarist Chico Pinheiro, pianist/composer Bianca Gismonti and pandeiro virtuoso Bernardo Aguiar this album is full of surprises. Sammy’s percussion flows beneath the songs, with bursts of Uruguayan candombe, Cuban bata, Puerto Rican bomba and of course carnival samba, enhanced by the multiple guitars of Chico Pinheiro and Michi Ruzitschka. Representing the rich Minas Gerais tradition of Clara Nunes and Milton Nascimento, Glaucia’s pure sound is aspirational and heartfelt, transcending language. And yet, African roots are always present, as in the classic “Ilu-Aye” and the one English language song, dedicated to Nelson Mandela. ‘Like peanut butter and chocolate’, this combination of Latin jazz percussion and Brazilian song result in a delicious and unexpected treat.

Howard Shore's music for Crash is among those truly rare times when a film composer and his subject matter achieve optimum intercourse. Every electrified guitar wail and steely screech, every wistful woodwind and haunting harp, and each melancholic violin conspire to provide a soundtrack perfectly suited for, yet independent from, its movie. Shore no doubt adds a darkly romantic logic to David Cronenberg's screen adaptation of J.G. Ballard's literary meditation on the eroticism of car crashes. Instead of being obvious or trendy …, he opts for a singular combination of electronic overlapping and echo delays that are both metallic and oddly melodic. Highly Recommended. --Joseph Lanza

Howard Shore again masters the mood with this foray into the seamy underworld of William Burroughs. In this story about a place called Interzone, full of sinister centipedes and slimy "mugwumps," there is nothing better at giving listeners the creepy-crawlies than the depressing styles of what many could instantly identify as "beatnik" jazz. ‌ To be even more authentic to the period, he collaborates with Ornette Coleman and also incorporates the Thelonious Monk composition "Misterioso." This soundtrack's best moments, however, occur when Shore drops the beat pose and just shines darkly. --Joseph Lanza
