*DPDN RUDRESH MAHANTHAPPA The idea of hybridity has been central to the music of alto saxophonist/composer Rudresh Mahanthappa throughout his career. On his new ACT release, Gamak, Mahanthappa continues that multi-directional evolution with a bold, striking set of music that melds leading-edge jazz with innovative reinterpretations of traditional Indian and Middle Eastern approaches, shot through with an electric jolt of prog-rock complexity. Gamak, Mahanthappa’s thirteenth album as leader or co-leader, marks the debut of a new band that is both a reprise and a reinvention. The album reunites the saxophonist with bassist François Moutin and drummer Dan Weiss, the rhythm section from his long-running quartet, which was last recorded for the 2006 album, Codebook. But the group takes on a radically different sound with the addition of David “Fuze” Fiuczynski, a master of microtonal guitar whose eclectic virtuosity offered Mahanthappa a vast new territory to explore.

Family Tree OREGON The second youth of Oregon, which coincides with their landing several years ago at CAM Jazz, continues to hold great surprises. The joy of playing together again, serving music, going into the recording studio with the same intensity of their early work, leaves us wonderfully amazed still to this day. Family Tree is an album that expresses gratitude and reinforces once again the relationship between Oregon and their endless blanket of fans, the faces and people who have made this long journey one of the most exciting musical experiences in the history of modern jazz. In Oregon’s own words: “Family Tree is dedicated not only to the immediate families of each of us, but also to the extended family of listeners, producers, technicians, and all that have supplied the encouragement and help that have kept us thriving. Our dedication to the expansion and improvement of our music-making is the fruit of this care and the trust placed in us.”

The jazz heard in Family Tree has the colors and the aroma of the Mediterranean, a European flow, which gives life to an emotional journey into the world of Oregon. Endless facets of tone colors that are exalted at Bauer Studios in Ludwigsburg, Germany— one of the few recording studios chosen by CAM Jazz to give life to a trademark that has made its label synonymous with Made In Italy quality. More than a half century after the first performance by Oregon, this latest work, Family Tree, reminds us once again that, as in reality, the question of time is completely relative. 1 Bibo Babo 6'52 2 Tern 5'18 3 The Hexagram 5'50 4 Creeper 5'31 5 Jurassic 2'24 6 Family Tree 8'28 7 Stritch 2'44 8 Mirror Pond 5'49 9 Moot 5'45 10 Julian 4'26 11 Max Alert 1'03 12 Carnival Express 8'01

New Beat Bossa Nova Vols 1 & 2 + 5 Bonus Tracks
ZOOT SIMS Two wonderful LPs presenting Zoot Sims playing bossa nova songs, as well as jazz standards in a bossa nova mood arranged by Manny Albam and Al Cohn: New Beat Bossa Nova (Colpix SCP435), and its sequel, New Beat Bossa Nova Vol. 2 (Colpix SCP437). Recorded in 1962, these were among the first albums to combine bossa nova and jazz. Both LPs feature the outstanding guitarist Jim Hall as a soloist. Curiously, in between the recording of both albums, Sims participated on a third bossa nova project, this time a vocal one, fronted by singer Vi Velasco. The label has completed the CD with five selected songs from that LP on which Sims plays solos.

DOWN BEAT original review “I plead guilty to being an Oscar Peterson nut. That an album by an artist who already has dozens of others available can be worth fi ve stars may seem incredible, yet my reasons for being a Peterson nut are the same as the reasons for the rating. Even by the standards of the earlier LPs this is an extraordinary set. Unusual value for the loot here –almost 45 minutes of impeccable music. (XURSHDQ 6WDQGDUGV LIONEL BELMONDO TRIO After more than a decade leading his ensemble, and following on from several projects including his trilogy Hymne au Soleil (2004), Influence (2005) featuring the venerable Yusef Lateef, and Clairières dans le Ciel (2011) with the Latvian National Choir, Lionel Belmondo has opted for the more intimate trio format for his latest project. He takes pieces drawn from the European classical music repertoire and revisits them as ‘standards’. An organic album from an extraordinarily talented saxophonist, a musical magician, a skilled tightrope walker who favours realistic, natural and totally acoustic sounds and jazz without a safety net: no frills, no effects. An enlightened album and an enlightening one, from a mischievous troublemaker, a humorous wandering musician telling his tales, a passionate teacher spreading his wisdom, headstrong and vociferous, a spirited, almost zen-like master who likes nothing more than to share.

&RQWLQXXP DAVID VIRELLES One of the most in-demand pianists in jazz, Cuban-born pianist David Virelles makes his Pi Recordings debut with Continuum, a collaborative effort with bassist Ben Street (Danilo Perez, Kurt Rosenwinkel), legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille (David Murray, Cecil Taylor) and Cuban folkloric percussionist/poet Román Díaz. Virelles' compositions are inspired by various aspects of Afro-Cuban religious practices; systems that include music, poetry, storytelling, dance, symbols, art, divination, and magic. He draws specifically from the rituals and myths surrounding the Abakuá, an Afro-Cuban secret society. Helping to bring that tradition to life is Roman Díaz, who spins poetry that speaks to the multi-layered fabric of Cuban culture.

Upon arriving in New York in 2008 David almost immediately began playing with such established band leaders as Steve Coleman, Mark Turner, Ravi Coltrane and Chris Potter. More recently he has played with ECM recording artist Tomasz Stanko, accompanying the trumpet player on his most recent ECM recording. As of late he has become a regular performer at the Village Vanguard. His work as a leader has garnered critical acclaim for its innovation as well as its maturity.

)DFLQJ 1RUWK CLAUDIO FILIPPINI TRIO “Facing North is an album that confirms the commitment of this pianist from Pescara, Italy. Claudio Filippini has grown to be considered one of the most promising artists in the Italian jazz scene today thanks to his numerous awards and international collaborations. “Facing North is a convergence of two worlds and approaches, where the pianist meets two extraordinary musicians such as Palle Danielsson and Olavi Louhivuori. The former is a true legend of Northern European jazz, an amazing bass player who shaped a movement that honors him today as one of its greatest leaders. The latter, drummer Olavi Louhivuori, is among the leading protagonists in Finnish jazz despite his young age, and is a cohort of Tomasz Stanko and Dave Stapleton amongst many others. From this meeting comes a thrilling album, where northern European influences mix with Filippini’s lyricism. An extraordinary writing from which compositions of great depth are born, giving due recognition to Filippini not only as a musician but also as a composer. No Material BAKER / SHARROCK / SKOPELITIS / BROTZMANN / KAZDA A definitive two CD edition from ITM Archives bringing together for the first time in one package the two live No Material recordings from March 25 and 28, 1987. This heavyweight group only actually existed for one week but these recordings, the only ones they made, have always been acknowledged as superlative sets of outer limits rock-jazz. Commenting on the original No Material album: "Four totally improvised tracks with Nicky Skopelitis as the creative force and musical center of the band, forming the hub between the essentially rock-oriented leanings of Cream drummer Ginger Baker, bassist Jan Kazda and the explosively free tendencies of the Last Exit front line of Brotzmann and Sharrock. The Skopelitis/Sharrock pairing is especially juicy, the former's melodicism contrasting wonderfully with the latter's "shards of glass" approach. Brotzmann, the saxophone colossus from Wuppertal, Germany, is in stellar form throughout, negotiating the unusually (for him) rock-ish territory with aplomb and ferocity." ~ Brian Olewnick

La Guinéenne MORY KANTE Mory Kanté is a legend—a traditional West African musician who rose to regional stardom in the '70s, rocked the world pop charts from his adopted home in Paris in the '80s, rode the wave of globalized African music in the '90s, and returned home to his native Guinea in the 2000s to become a force for economic development and an inspirational voice for a new generation of Africans. With La Guinéenne, Mory Kanté pays a tribute to Women, a full-throated praise song to the women of the world, whose sacrifice, dedication, and centrality to human progress is too often met with oppression and neglect. La Guinéenne is also a musical tour de force from a pioneer whose work has helped define the musical language of post-independence Africa, and who remains one of the most forceful bandleaders and compelling vocalists in African music today.

La Guinéenne marks Kanté's return to his trademark, big band sound. It also marks his return to Guinea. Kanté recorded the original tracks for La Guinéenne in Conakry, at a moment of reinvention in Guinea following a period of deep political turmoil. Kanté then took the tracks to Paris, where he worked closely with producer Philippe Avril and a 5-piece brass section from the north of Norway to complete the album. The result is a genuinely bi-cultural creation, rooted in authentic West African folklore, and gleaming with the polish and precision of top-flight contemporary production.
- One of the highest profile African music stars in the world - 1987 hit Yéké Yéké is one of the best-selling African songs ever (over 1 million sales) - it reached the UK Top 30 on three separate releases - First album for eight years, since 2004's Sabou - A member of the Rail Band in Mali during the 1970s - Operates his own 'cultural complex' with recording studios, venue, hotel etc in the Conakry suburb that now bears his name - Morykantea 1 Yarabini 3'58 / 2 La Guinéenne 4'28 / 3 Tedekou 5'04 / 4 Oh Oh Oh 5'02 / 5 Saratan 5'44 / 6 Mbalia 4'29 / 7 Bedoke 4'21 / 8 Sikaa 4'35 / 9 Malibala 5'11 / 10 Nodiche 3'50

RAVI SHANKAR East Meets West, the record label of the Ravi Shankar Foundation, had already scheduled the release of this DVD by cinematographer and producer Alan Kozlowski, which presents an intimate look at a 91-year-old Ravi Shankar performing in southern California in October 2011. Following the sad news of the death of Ravi Shankar, this release becomes a memorial to him, the greatest Indian musician. Kozlowski, known for his work on documentaries featuring Jeff Bridges and Jackson Browne as well as feature films such as Independence Day, offers a uniquely personal perspective on Ravi Shankar. The filmmaker had studied sitar with Ravi since 1978, has produced a documentary honoring Ravi called Sangeet Ratna and co-produced with George Harrison a collection of Ravi's work called In Celebration. The love of his subject is clear in the film, but it's Ravi's raw and powerful performance that leaves the most lasting impression.

From the work songs of black prisoners recorded by Alan Lomax in the 1930’s to the timeless chant of a native American chaman by way of the joyous proto-rapping of Bo Diddley, the jabbing pain of a Serbian gipsy singer, the tongue-in-cheek creole of Haitian storytellers, the soft complaint of Cheikh Lo, or even the saudade of the great Angolan singer Bonga, the entire planet is singing all the different shades of blues through Repac’s machines.

Guitarist, composer, arranger and producer all in one, Nicolas Repac is essentially the man working in the shadows. But this is not some kind of artsy posture or the result of excessive shyness. For him, music has very little to do with the tyranny of appearance or the bleak light of the spotlights. Arthur H’s alter ego for almost 15 years is always more at ease in the comfortable space of his studio on the heights of Montmartre. Up there, alone with his machines, Repac loves to dive into the night to bring back the ghostly echoes of long forgotten worlds, just like the inspired medium that he is. He’s become a master at the subtle art of freely associating samples. His work consists in giving these samples a second musical and poetic life, by reintroducing them into the vibrant murmur of the contemporary melting pot.
