A Queen of Hearts ROSEMARY STANDLEY French-American singer Rosemary Standley is the vocalist in the Parisian alt-folk band Moriarty, whose recent fourth release Epitaph was acclaimed in the Guardian as “classy, eclectic Americana”. She also sings in Birds On A Wire, a duo with the Brazilian musician Dom La Nena. This new album however presents a different side of Rosemary. A Queen of Hearts pays tribute to the glamour and to the melancholy elegance of the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Marilyn Monroe and Billie Holiday. Underpinned by pianist Sylvain Griotto’s agile accompaniment, Rosemary Standley’s exquisite voice adorns a top quality songbook which skips from classical music to jazz and French chanson, taking in songs by Lennon & McCartney, Kurt Weill, Gershwin, Bashung and Nina Simone. The set, recorded live in Paris, was filmed and is presented here in a CD+DVD edition.

Les Années Splendid - Saison 1 LE GRAND ORCHESTRE DU SPLENDID Forty years after their debut, France's most famous big band Le Grand Orchestre du Splendid is still going strong, with their festive spirit and their wicked swing beat. On this album, which focuses on the big hits of the fifties and sixties, the musicians bring the twist, the mambo, the jerk and the Madison back to life, proving that they still have a knack for combining fun and nostalgia! Back in 1977, a bunch of musician friends got together to rearrange jazz standards at the Théâtre du Splendid, presenting a theatrical music show rooted in their love of old-time jazz dance - a frenetic good-time blend of theatrical visuals and costumes and tight arrangements. They had instant success and have since performed on all the famous Parisian stages, and sold vast numbers of records. In 2016, le Grand Orchestre du Splendid turns 40! Still all together, not a single original member is missing, and ready to celebrate with their legions of faithful fans.

Duende JAVIER GIROTTO & AIRES TANGO With RALPH TOWNER After twenty years of playing music together as a quartet, Javier Girotto & Aires Tango has grown in number. The invited very special guest is none other than RALPH TOWNER, who contributes half the tracks on the album and plays classical guitar throughout, allowing Aires Tango new sonic shades that intertwine into a wildly intriguing music.
Label: CAM Jazz File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: CAMJ7898-2 Barcode: 8052405141958 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Javier Girotto - soprano sax Alessandro Gwis - piano, sampler and electronics Marco Siniscalco - electric bass Michele Rabbia - drums and percussion with Ralph Towner - classical guitar
The six pieces by Towner regularly alternate with the six by Girotto, showing both the differences and many similarities in style between the Washington State-born musician and the Italian-Argentinian quartet. “Duende” opens with the title track by Towner. The guitarist’s opening arpeggio is highlighted by Michele Rabbia’s drums, as the other Aires Tango players gradually join in. “Racconti in fuga” is introduced by Alessandro Gwis on piano, who performs a stunning solo toward the end. In “Origini”, a rustling gramophone creates the opening for an amazing theme on piano and sax, then flows into Marco Siniscalco’s solo on electric bass. Ralph Towner tests himself against Italian traditional music, specifically from Campania, giving rise to a fresh “Tammurriata”, where his classic guitar interacts beautifully with Gwis’s piano. Listening is pleasant, as is always the case when you come across Girotto’s rich, appealing melodies. Towner’s contribution to the bandleader’s pieces merges perfectly with Aires Tango’s sound. “A Breath Away” and “Chiaroscuro” are further cases in point: in the latter track, the guitarist launches into a long solo, supported and highlighted very gently by the rhythm section of Girotto’s quartet. “Duende” ends with “Barrio Jardin”, a highly impressive, melancholic piece vaguely evoking Fellini’s world. Track listing: 1. Duende 4:56 2. Racconti In Fuga 5:35 3. As She Sleeps 6:02 4. Origini 4:33 5. On The Rise 5:23 6. Gatos 6:10 7. Tammurriata 6:58 8. Io E Te 5:13 9. A Breath Away 7:02 10. Un Certo Luca(s) 5:09 11. Chiaroscuro 6:39 12. Barrio Jardin 4:47

Pa'ki pa'ka ROBERT 'ROBI' SVÄRD Robert 'Robi' Svärd posted a video of his own song on Facebook a couple of years ago and it quickly snowballed into hundreds of shares. It wasn’t long before one of flamenco’s hottest singers, Alfredo Tejada, approached Robert about singing with him. He was invited to record his debut album in the legendary FJR Estudios de Grabación in Granada together with some top class musicians in the flamenco world, including Nani Conde (Pata Negra) and the percussionist Miguel 'El Cheyenne', who would later invite Robi to his daughter’s baptism. On arrival to the baptism, Robi’s musical heroes were courting him, wanting to meet and shake hands with him. It was like a dream. The fact is that classically-trained guitarist Robert 'Robi' Svärd unleashed something during the recording of his debut album, "Pa’ki Pa’ka". It has something to do with his fingers, which dance, light as feathers, on the strings, making the harmonics glitter like sequins. But it doesn’t stop there. Even if his skill is impossible to miss, it’s never boastful; it doesn’t beg for admiration, it is just there.
