La Vache Original Soundtrack

IBRAHIM MAALOUF Ibrahim Maalouf, trumpeter extraordinaire, is one of the fastest rising stars in the jazz firmament. His two concurrent releases for Impulse (his major label debuts) made a big splash and he is one of the first names announced for both Love Supreme and Womad this year. His biggest UK gig thus far, headlining the Barbican, was one of the most rapturously received at last year's London Jazz Festival. As a sideline... Maalouf also has a discography of music for film. His latest release is the soundtrack for the hit Franco-Algerian (French-language) comedy La Vache. Maalouf wrote the score and is joined by the multinational Haïdouti Orkestar Balkan-esque brass ensemble for the performance.

A Master Speaks GEORGE COLEMAN Like the pronouncements of a sage, legendary tenor saxophonist George Coleman's new recording A Master Speaks communicates both wisdom and wonder that bespeaks Coleman's half century in music. At 80-years-old, Coleman sounds, as ever, both vital and timeless. He's obviously invigorated by the deep sense of swing and classic hard-bop feel of the quartet he's assembled. A Master Speaks is Coleman's first release as a leader in nearly 20 years and first recording since the 2002 all-star live tribute album Four Generations of Miles. The rarity of the session is remarkable in itself; even more special is the fact that it grew out of a desire shared by Coleman and his son, drummer George Coleman Jr., to finally record together. They're joined by a stellar band featuring pianist Mike LeDonne and bassist Bob Cranshaw, with guitarist Peter Bernstein making a special guest appearance.

Label: Smoke Sessions File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSR1603 Barcode: 888295365598 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack George Coleman - tenor saxophone Mike LeDonne - piano Bob Cranshaw - bass George Coleman, Jr. - drums Peter Bernstein - guitar on “Blues for B.B.”

A man of few words, Coleman nonetheless conveys his thoughts with unparalleled eloquence when he speaks through his instrument, as profoundly evidenced by the nine tracks on A Master Speaks, his longoverdue return to the studio. Track listing: 1. Invitation (Bronisław Kaper / Paul Francis Webster) 12:41 2. The Shadow of Your Smile (Johnny Mandel / Paul Francis Webster) 6:55 3. Blues for B.B. (George Coleman) 6:57 4. Blondie’s Waltz (George Coleman) 6:01 5. You’ll Never Know What You Mean to Me (Mike LeDonne) 6:41 6. Darn That Dream (Jimmy Van Heusen / Eddie DeLange) 8:08 7. Sonny’s Playground (George Coleman) 5:17 8. These Foolish Things (Jack Strachey, Harry Link / Holt Marvell) 8:01 9. Time to Get Down (George Coleman) 5:29

Shooting Star BIG BLUE “Shooting Star” is the Finnish quartet’s third recording on CAM JAZZ (or, rather, the fourth if one also considers the side project “Little Blue”). Once again, this album consists solely of original tracks, confirming the four band-mates’ gift for ranging from the refined vibes of Nordic jazz to more quick-paced, pressing moods. Louhivuori’s trumpet is often at the forefront, supported by Antti Kujanpää on piano, Jori Huhtala on bass and Joonas Leppänen on drums. Kujanpää is the only one who has not contributed compositions here, while the other three band members wrote all the tracks in more or less equal measure. Since the opening of “Mountain Man” great care is revealed in searching for unique, distinctive sounds that give rise to a clear-cut sonic brand. The offbeat, tense rhythms in “Mustique” preface the calm in “Corales”, a gentle ballad by Louhivuori, who also wrote the hypnotic “Artificial Rainbow”. “You Of All People” and “Willful Ignorance”, both by Huhtala, convey the listener into a collective closing piece, the only one the quartet chose to mark as made by Big Blue: soft, evocative, with electronically filtered instruments delivering suspended, dream states.
