Live in Marciac - July 28th 2014 LUCKY PETERSON Lucky Peterson live in full effect on CD and DVD at last summer's Marciac festival in France, featuring Joe Satriani as special guest on the final track. Born in Buffalo close to New York, Lucky Peterson - a singer, guitarist and organist - is one of the most authentic agents of blues music; he’s familiar with its oral tradition and history and can also play and sing it like no other. Mixing his own compositions and inspired covers (of tracks by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Wilson Pickett and even Johnny Nash), he has decided to treat our eyes and ears to a ‘live’ recording on which he blends blues music and an unstoppable sense of groove. With these fourteen tracks, forged in the embers of a fire burning with soul and rhythm ‘n’ blues but giving off a few gospel and rock ‘n’ roll sparks (witness the final track by Chuck Berry alongside Joe Satriani!), Lucky Peterson has put blues, the oldest form of black American music, back in the limelight.

Alone & Together with Mike Osborne Live at Wigmore Hall 1974

STAN TRACEY A NEWLY DISCOVERED RECORDING OF TWO BRITISH JAZZ LEGENDS GETS A WELCOME FIRST RELEASE! This double album consists of, for the first time ever on CD, the Stan Tracey solo recording Live at Wigmore Hall, made for Cadillac Records in 1974. The re-release of this set is valuable enough in itself, but added golddust comes in the shape of the additional material - the previously unreleased second half of the evening - a duo recording with alto saxist Mike Osborne. Two of the greats of the English jazz scene - in fact two of the finest jazz improvisers of theirs or any time. This is not only highly charged, beautiful music performed by musicians at the top of their game, it's a fascinating and irreplaceable historical snapshot of the jazz scene of the time.

Label: Cadillac Records File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SGCCD014/015 Barcode: 5020675971424 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 2 CD Packaging: digipack Stan Tracey - piano Mike Osborne - alto saxophone (CD 2)

"There can't have been too many duos in the history of jazz that have ever achieved such a rare understanding as Osborne and Tracey achieve here. And one that's all the more gratifying in the light of the knowledge that the alto player was the man responsible for bringing newer forms of jazz to Stan's ears, and dissuading the older musician from jacking it in altogether." Steve Lake, 1974 Track listing: CD 1 1. Eighty Eight Plus One 42:04 CD 2 1. Two-Part Intention 45:08

In for a Penny, In for a Pound HENRY THREADGILL'S ZOOID In for a Penny, In for a Pound is the latest installment in saxophonist/ flutist/composer Henry Threadgill’s ongoing exploration of his singular system for integrating composition with group improvisation. The music for his band Zooid – his main music-making vehicle for the past fourteen years and the longest running band of his illustrious forty plus-year career – is no less than his attempt to completely deconstruct standard jazz form, steering the improvisatory language towards an entirely new system based on preconceived series of intervals. His compositions create a polyphonic platform that encourages each musician to improvise with an ear for counterpoint and, in the process, creating striking new harmonies.

Label: Pi Recordings File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: Pi58 Barcode: 808713005820 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 2 CD Packaging: digipack Henry Threadgill - alto saxophone, flute, bass flute Jose Davila - trombone, tuba Liberty Ellman - guitar Christopher Hoffman - cello Elliot Kavee - drums, percussion

Threadgill is widely considered to be among the most important artists in jazz. The New York Times called him "one of the most thrillingly elusive composers in and around the jazz idiom: a sly maestro of unconventional timbres, bristling counterpoint and tough but slippery rhythms" and NPR called him “a true idiosyncratic great.” He is a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding this year, and continues to adhere to one of that august organization’s basic tenets: that of finding one’s individual path through original music. Threadgill continues to challenge himself to create music that is pushing the boundaries for what is possible. CD 1 1.In for a Penny, In for a Pound (opening) 2.Ceroepic (for drums and percussion) 3.Dosepic (for Cello) CD 2 1.Off the Prompt Box (Exordium) 2.Tresepic (for trombone and tuba) 3.Unoepic (for guitar)

Jazzpaña Live GERARDO NUNEZ / ULF WAKENIUS Released in 1992, ACT's very first recording, Jazzpaña, was to become a milestone and synonym for the label's philosophy, and became a double Grammy nominee in the process. Jazzpaña brought the stars of the “Nuevo Flamenco” from Spain together with US jazz greats such as Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine and Al Di Meola, backed by the sound of the WDR Big Band. One album became two in 2000 with Jazzpaña II - a smaller band led by Gerardo Núñez and Chano Domínguez. Now, 15 years on from Jazzpaña II, ACT presents Jazzpaña live. For these concerts, once again both Jazz and Flamenco combine through Spanish guitarist Gerardo Núñez, considered the heir apparent to the great Paco de Lucía, and Swedish guitar virtuoso Ulf Wakenius. However this time a third element, Cuba, is added courtesy of pianist Ramón Valle.

Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic IV - Accordion Night Vincent PEIRANI / Stian CARSTENSEN / Régis GIZAVO / Klaus PAIER From Musette in Paris to Schrammelmusik in Vienna, the Sinti and Roma music from the Balkans and the tango in Buenos Aires, the accordion is best loved in popular music, and a welcome companion in folk music: the "common man's orchestra". In the classical and jazz genres, however, it is all too often misunderstood and still an outsider in classical and jazz music, despite pioneering talents such as Astor Piazzolla and Richard Galliano. The eighth edition of the Jazz at the Philharmonic series at Berlin's Kammermusiksaal, curated by ACT head honcho Siggi Loch, sought to redress that balance, presenting an interweaving line-up of four of the finest accordionists in duo pairings with other instruments. The result is a triumph and presents unequivocably the accordion as a jazz instrument par excellence.

Graffiti JD ALLEN JD Allen's career ascendence suggests that he's making plenty of the right choices. The native of Detroit has been on the New York scene since 1993, when his youthful precociousness earned him a spot in “Jazz Ahead”, the singer Betty Carter's acclaimed touring program for up-and-comers. TimeOut New York says he will “remind you of giants like Coltrane and Rollins but placing a special kind of premium on concision, directness and accessibility.” The Chicago Reader adds, “Allen has gravitated toward a more brooding, elliptical approach with a strong jolt of John Coltrane at his most probing.” Finally, JD is, in the words of Connecticut's WNPR, “A man for all seasons,” who “plays ballads with warmth, beauty and truth, grooves hard in a post-bop mode or wails in a free jazz setting with passion saturated with the soulful spirituality, grace and inspired abandon recalling the power and the glory of John Coltrane.” One of the telltale symbols of his upward trajectory is the fact that his trio, bassist Gregg August (lead bass chair in the Brooklyn Philharmonic) and drummer Rudy Royston (a much sought-after rhythm power since relocating to New York from Denver), has remained solid throughout his rise.

Say When STEVE DAVIS Steve Davis, one of the most beloved trombonists in modern jazz, first dreamed of recording the music of J.J. Johnson some 20 years ago, but only now has the time felt right. Along the way Davis has worked with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, the Jackie McLean Sextet, Chick Corea’s Origin, Benny Golson’s New Jazztet, Horace Silver, Hank Jones, Larry Willis, One for All, Freddie Hubbard and the New Jazz Composer’s Octet, the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars, as well as the big bands of Christian McBride, Ron Carter, Jimmy Heath and Roy Hargrove. He’s earned the highest praise, too, such as Freddie Hubbard calling him “one of the greatest trombone players in the world,” James Moody commenting that “his solos never cease to amaze me,” and Chick Corea saying that he plays “some of the most melodic improvisations ever heard in jazz.”

Label: Smoke Sessions File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSR1505 Barcode: 888295177351 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Steve Davis - trombone Eddie Henderson - trumpet* Eric Alexander - tenor saxophone* Harold Mabern - piano Nat Reeves - bass Joe Farnsworth - drums (*except tracks 5 & 10)

For Say When, he’s enlisted the support of the very best — Eddie Henderson, Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, Nat Reeves and Joe Farnsworth — to breathe new life into six Johnson compositional gems, as well as Cole Porter’s classic “What Is This Thing Called Love,” Warren and Gordon’s “There Will Never Be Another You” and Coltrane’s “Village Blues.” It concludes with a surprising rendition of “When the Saints Go Marching In” that Davis vividly remembers hearing J.J. perform late in his career. It’s just another reason that Will Friedwald wrote in the Wall Street Journal, “The highly respected contemporary trombonist Steve Davis is a perfect bandleader to present the vast riches of (J.J.) Johnson.” As usual with this attentive label, the album comes as an 8-panel deluxe CD complete with 2,000-word artist interview and additional photos. Track listing: 1. Pinnacles (J.J. Johnson) 5:02 2. What Is This Thing Called Love? (Cole Porter) 5:03 3. Shortcake (J.J. Johnson) 6:03 4. Mr. Johnson (Harold Mabern) 5:53 5. Lament (J.J. Johnson) 8:28 6. Say When (J.J. The Epic Botanical Beat Suite HU VIBRATIONAL Hu Vibrational's new album mixes deep percussive African rhythms and Afro-Jazz with elements of hip-hop and electronica. Recorded and mixed at Bill Laswell’s state of the art studio, the album features seven percussionists from Rudolph's Go: Organic Orchestra on a wide variety of instruments, along with several special guests including Bill Laswell hitting the deep pockets on bass plus Norwegian guitar whiz Eivind Aarset creating ethereal electronic palettes. The tracks were then electronically processed and transformed in the mixes into a true ancient to future expression; a dance music style Hu call “Boonghee Music”. Adam Rudolph is known for work with Don Cherry, Pharaoh Sanders and other great jazz artists, as well as his 25 year partnership with the legendary Yusef Lateef. He currently also leads his Moving Pictures Octet and the 36 piece Go: Organic Orchestra. Almost 10 years since the last Hu Vibrational album (released on the Soul Jazz label), Rudolph turns his creative energies back to Hu by creating a deep groove masterpiece – indeed; a vision of future dance music. As Tommy Chong so aptly puts it, “When you hit a groove, it's not you; it's the spirit world.”

Tales Out Of Time BROTZMANN / McPHEE / KESSLER / ZERANG Joe McPhee and Peter Brötzmann first heard each other one night in October, 1977, in Paris, at the Rouen Jazz Action. Twenty years later, many criss-crossings of their paths behind them, they finally performed together in 1997 in the context of the Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, with whom they have recorded and toured together since. A few years ago they co-led a quartet for a single concert with a rhythm section of Noel Kupersmith on bass and Chad Taylor on drums, McPhee exclusively playing alto saxophone. And then in 2002, after an exhausting American bus tour by the Tentet, twenty-five years after their first encounter, McPhee and Brötzmann entered the studio with their Tentet cohorts Kent Kessler on bass and Michael Zerang on percussion, carrying with them the vague producerly notion of recording some “ballads.” During the Tentet tour I asked Brötzmann what he had in mind in that respect. Standards? Originals? Free ballads? “Na ja,” he said. “We will see. But anyway, whatever it is we will do it our way.” -John Corbett (from the sleeve notes)

Shots STEVE LACY This album is release of the original LP on the Musica label, recorded in Paris in October 1977. Not to be confused with the recent Emanem issue of Shots (as part of the Cycles album), which is a live version from Rome, November 1977. ...Steve Lacy and Masa Kwate do something quite different on their wonderful and unique LP Shots. Neither is there any kind of conventionally direct interaction, where one player plays something and the other supports or counters, nor is there a sensibility of total independence. The American soprano saxophonist and the Japanese percussionist have a special understanding, no doubt a kind of cultural negotiation, that gives their joint activities a simultaneous atmosphere of interaction and independence. I can’t say that I’ve heard anything else like it... – John Corbett (from the sleeve notes)

Travelogue HERBERT DISTEL Herbert Distel (born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1942) is a painter, sculptor, film-maker and composer. His musical work utilises found sound recorded on railways, electronically treated to form musique concrète soundscapes. "As opposed to the conventional structuring of musical events, Herbert Distel's constructivist methods of organization reject juxtaposition and development in favor of an idiosyncratic system of layering and looping, so that his editing and manipulations do not intensify the awareness of time passing, but remove time from the experience. The importance of rhythm, the means of measuring time as it moves through a predetermined space, is replaced by sound-color: a complex program of textures, densities, shades and micro-shades, and audible events are sustained like scenery passing before our eyes – although the scenery may be shrouded in fog, an ambience of persistent mystery, or even a dreamlike obscurity, all on a route of Distel’s choosing." – Art Lange (from the sleeve notes)

Solo - Live at Snugs ELLERY ESKELIN Eskelin's 13th album for the Swiss label, which has championed his work for many years. Recorded live in New York, December 2013. …After five years of reassessment, a new solo concert program remained an unmet challenge. The idea was just as intimidating as it was the first time, maybe even more so. As it happened, Anabel Anderson extended an invitation to take part in her “Snugs Concert Series” of solo concerts at 61 Local in Brooklyn. Her invitation offered a second opportunity to rethink an approach to the solo saxophone and ask new questions… … All I had to do on this evening was start from the beginning and play until the end. – Ellery Eskelin

Live in Santa Cruz! BENNY GREEN There are certain music venues that become a home away from home for many musicians. Places where the vibe is right, the crowd is always involved and management is friendly. These perfect arrangements leave lasting impressions on musicians who frequently have to deal with situations that aren’t as pleasant. The Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, California is one of these places and the favorite venue of pianist Benny Green. Returning to the site where he recorded a live album on his 30th birthday, Green recorded Live In Santa Cruz to mark both the 20th Anniversary of that gig and his 50th birthday. The night and the performance were magical, as the trio featuring bassist David Wong and drummer Kenny Washington lit up Kuumbwa with a program of all original compositions by Green.

The duo has worked together since Serpa studied with Blake at the New England Conservatory. Riding the Moment DENNY ZEITLIN & GEORGE MARSH Pianist/composer Denny Zeitlin has always been adept at transitioning from one musical idiom to another, as he has found inspiration in the sounds of the acoustic piano in different groupings, and in electronic music. On the new recording, Riding the Moment, Zeitlin returns to spontaneous composing utilizing electronic instruments along with the acoustic piano. His co-creator is the prodigious drummer and musical conceptualist George Marsh, with whom he collaborated on his first foray into the world of electronics during the late 1960s and 1970s. Threading ODED LEV-ARI Composer-arranger-producer Oded Lev-Ari has crafted acclaimed albums by the likes of hit band 3 Cohens, clarinet icon Anat Cohen and woodwind sage Marty Ehrlich, as well as rising-star singers Amy Cervini, Melissa Stylianou and vocal trio Duchess. Now the Tel Aviv-born, New York-based Lev-Ari steps out with the first recording under his own name: Threading. The album presents six inspired Lev-Ari compositions – instrumental and vocal – performed by an all-star 11-piece New York band that includes Anat Cohen and the ace Matt Wilson on drums, as well as guest vocalists Alan Hampton and Jo Lawry. The chamber-jazz sound of Threading – which features not only winds, trumpet and a textured rhythm section but also three cellos – hints at varied sonic worlds, from jazz sound painters Gil Evans and Maria Schneider to tango nuevo king Astor Piazzolla and contemporary classical composers. Ultimately, though, Lev-Ari has his own, individual soundprint, one of cinematic richness and open-hearted lyricism. “Putting lightning in a bottle is what Oded Lev–Ari specializes in.” –DownBeat Magazine

Inner Village GÉRARD MARAIS QUARTET The veteran French guitarist Gérard Marais, now 70 years old, has never been a prolific recording artist, but the work he has committed to wax has always been of the highest calibre. Associates along the way include a who's who of the European jazz scene over several decades - Renaud Garcia-Fons, Henri Texier, Michel Godard, Vincent Courtois, Louis Sclavis, Aldo Romano, Michel Portal... On this new album bass legend Texier teams up with drumming titan Christophe Marguet to create a formidable rhythm section, upon which Marais and pianist Jérémie Ternoy (currently a member of Magma but a bona fide jazzer too) roam at will.

So Far So Good UPTAKE “Young talents can never be discouraged enough,” claimed one Claude Debussy. Fortunately, the members of the ReZZo FOCAL Jazz in Vienna juries are aware that the strength of fledging artists is that they are not, in fact, ‘discourageable’. This applies in any case to the musicians who form UPTAKE, the lucky 2014 winners of this high profile jazz talent contest, one of the most important in Europe. Overflowing with groove and energy, this quartet which stems from the music scene in Lyons, France, has already mastered the art of interplay – a synergetic way of spreading and shaping music together in total freedom…

Congo - Pygmy Women of the Sangha Devoted to female repertoires of the Pygmies of northern Congo, this CD focuses on yeli - that most distinctive chant of Pygmy women with the meandering counterpoint of its polyphony, the sophisticated interlacing of its sounds and motifs and its complex yodelling technique. For Pygmy communities music has a vital role: "Normally everything is fine with us. It's only when we go to sleep at night that something can go wrong, because if we're asleep, there's nothing we can do to prevent it...So when something grave occurs, when someone fall sick, when the hunt is bad, or when death strikes, it must be that the forest herself is asleep and unable to watch over her children...We have to wake her up. And we do this with singing..."(Moke, Mbuti pygmies, 1961)

1001 Centigrades MAGMA 180 gram VINYL LP VERSION WITH DOWNLOAD CODE After losing guitarist Claude Engel and reinforcing the brass section with Jeff Seffer on saxophones and Louis Toesca on trumpet, Magma went back into the studio in 1971 to record a second album. All the originality and greatness of Kobaïa are there, in even greater measure because everything is magnified. The two tracks composed respectively by Teddy Lasry and François Cahen occasionally introduce a jazzier note but it is Rïah Sahïltaahk which shows the most forceful development of the work apparent on the first album. This Christian Vander composition is over twenty minutes in length. It amazes as much by its richness and the incredible number of its themes as by its rhythmic strength and its perfectly controlled violence. Furthermore, it allows the listener to admire the diversity of the brass, whose role diminishes progressively over time.

First Touch - 20th Anniversary Edition LP DOMINIC MILLER 180g VINYL LP - LIMITED EDITION OF 500 COPIES It has been 20 years since the original release of First Touch, Dominic Miller’s first solo album. The audio has been remastered for this 20th Annivery Edition and the album now contains three bonus tracks (Urban Waltz, Luberon, Carnaval). Miller is currently on a European tour with Sting and Paul Simon which includes several UK dates. "Sting has kept Dominic very busy over the last 24 years. Recording sessions, world tours, TV appearances… they’ve even co-written a couple of tunes, most notably ‘Shape Of My Heart’. But Dominic refers to his role in Sting’s entourage as “my day job” and after a busy day at the office, Dominic makes it his business to add to his own prestigious collection of solo albums. The first solo CD came out in the mid 90s; entitled First Touch, it featured moodily beautiful nylon string melodies over atmospheric backdrops with the occasional fiery Latin influenced instrumental on the side."
