Walking Dark Phronesis Phronesis are a dynamic trio who need little introduction. Their fourth album, Walking Dark, is the highly anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed Alive [Edition EDN1021], which was voted ‘Jazz Album of the Year’ by both Jazzwise and MOJO magazines in 2010. Since the success of this release, the band has toured widely across Europe and North America, earning consistent praise for their vibrant live performances. Formed by Danish bass player Jasper Høiby in 2005, the energy and individuality of Phronesis comes from an extraordinary democracy of expression and almost telepathic empathy between the musicians - three of the finest players on the European jazz scene today. British pianist Ivo Neame and Swedish drummer Anton Eger come together with Høiby to create a poly-rhythmic sound that is utterly accessible despite its underlying complexity, full of emotion and heart yet always delivered with clarity and direction.
Label: Edition Records File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: EDN1031 Barcode: 5065001530265 Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal JASPER HØIBY double bass IVO NEAME piano ANTON EGER drums
Walking Dark is titled in reference to a series of concerts the trio played in total darkness as a dedication to Høiby’s visually impaired sister. Høiby describes Walking Dark as ‘a joint Phronesis adventure’ - the first album in which all members of the band contribute to the writing, as well as the arranging. Yet through these individual compositional textures, each track nevertheless displays the characteristic groove-driven 'Phronesis sound', incorporating constantly shifting yet expertly tight rhythmic patterns and exploratory openness. The album sees all three players reaching further than ever before, creating music that by turns drives with urban energy and resonates with mountainous space and sheer delightful abstraction.
“One of the most exciting bands on the planet today” JAZZWISE “Look out for Phronesis – they might change your life!” SEAN RAFFERTY (’IN TUNE’ BBC RADIO 3) “…the most electrifying experience to be had in British jazz” THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

Dialect Fluorescent Steve Lehman Trio Alto saxophonist Steve Lehman has arrived. The New York Times described his 2009 release Travail, Transformation and Flow (Pi30) as "a breathtaking accomplishment" and it was #1 Jazz/Pop CD of 2009. That album solidified Lehman's status as a visionary composer with powerful new ideas about the future of jazz. But on his new trio CD, Dialect Fluorescent, Lehman defies his reputation as a future-fixated modernist and combines his own original compositions with a full program of older works by jazz legends like John Coltrane and Jackie McLean. The album is not about paying homage to the jazz tradition in a respectful or dutiful way; every piece on Dialect Fluorescent is treated as an opportunity to create a bold and compelling musical statement, performed without one shred of irony or nostalgia.
Label: Pi Recordings File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: Pi42 Barcode: 808713004229 Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Steve Lehman - alto saxophone Matt Brewer - bass Damion Reid - drums
The music on Dialect Fluorescent is electrified by Lehman's trio, which has been performing all over the United States and Europe since 2007. Throughout the album, Damion Reid displays an intricately dynamic conception of the modern drum set, rooted in his apprenticeship under Billy Higgins and his early experiences with Terence Blanchard and Robert Hurst, among others. Matt Brewer may be the only young bassist who can fly around his instrument like a horn player and still produce an incredibly big and propulsive sound. Lehman’s own performance on alto saxophone bristles with a distinctive combination of explosiveness and precision that has been his trademark since he burst onto New York’s creative music scene in 2004.
“One of the transforming figures of early 21st-century jazz.” –The Guardian (UK) “Music of genuinely visionary importance, a way forward for the art.” – Penguin Guide to Jazz “One of the most remarkable new saxophonists to emerge in the past 10 years.” – Signal to Noise

Home Wallace Roney The inventive and adventurous open-minded approach of Wallace Roney's previous HighNote releases is firmly maintained on Home. Roney is taking the eclecticism of all his influences and gradually merging them into a coherent whole, be it bebop, postbop, Trane, Herbie Hancock and Weather Report funk and fusion, hip-hop and, of course, Miles Davis, his guiding light. But despite the influence of Miles, Wallace Roney is mainstream only in the sense that he builds on what went before. And most importantly he does that with the essence of what jazz should be: A vehicle for self-expression, an instant form of communication, a conduit of the musical, mental and emotional self. Featuring his working band, Home is yet another example of Roney's tireless exploration of the communicative possibilities of jazz and cements his place in the pantheon of all-time trumpet greats. Friendly Fire Eric Alexander & Vincent Herring One of the hipper venues in New York City, Smoke is a quintessential jazz club and cocktail lounge where the jazz cognoscenti congregate seven nights a week to immerse themselves in a potent mix of hard bop and martinis. It was the venue for alto saxophonist Vincent Herring's and tenor man Eric Alexander's first sparring match and it was the only logical place for a re-match which we have here. Reuniting for their second recording together, Eric and Vincent Herring lock horns once more in a high-voltage set which unfolds in the spirit of mutual admiration. While their collaborative ethos makes “Friendly Fire” the thoroughly musical affair that it is, the saxophonists bring the unmistakable charge of friendly rivalry to the date as well. A great tune list and the presence of an enthusiastic audience make this a worthy addition to the two saxmen's considerable discographies. Solo - The Marcevol Concert Renaud Garcia-Fons All sounds you will hear on this CD were generated by Renaud García-Fons on the double bass. Some titles are strict solo bass, some have added loops, pre-recorded electronics and percussive sounds made by finger tapping or slapping. The thematic material oscillates between Orient and Occident, Africa and Latin America and between medieval and modern music. García-Fons lives his dream to present the bass as an instrument with an all-encompassing vocation, an instrument of beauty and many-sided possibilities which should be brought to an audible and visible level. The priory of Marcevol situated high up in the French Pyrenees proved to be the perfect spot for such an endeavour. Well balanced acoustics and an inspiring spirituality presented an invitation to take an “imaginary journey through time and space” which touches the Orient (Jey-hounabad), the middle ages (Marcevol), Africa (Kalimbass),South America (Yupanqui) and the baroque period (Hacía Compostela)…

Nothing For Granted Sandra Nkaké The energy is rock, the feeling pop, the spirit jazz and the groove implacable – this is the magic formula of authentic soul jazz singer Sandra Nkaké. With magnificent support from a rhythm section recalling the heydays of Stax, plus two poetic reedmen, this album, with compositions and lyrics by Sandra and her close partner, flautist-producer Jî Drû, packs a powerful punch. Old instruments, appealing arrangements, a retro-futurist atmosphere studded with echoes of sixties songs and soundtracks of cult films, a spacey production – everything here conspires to make Nothing For Granted an explosive manifesto where Sandra Nkaké’s rough-hewn voice rings out like a cry of freedom. Sandra Nkaké is a singer-songwriter-composer who has grown up between Yaoundé (Cameroun) and Paris. She was bounced back and forth on a regular basis between two different cultures and climates, and was confronted with mostly opposing social codes. Cinema, literature and music became her primary sources of refuge.

Since her first album “Mansaadi” in 2008 Sandra has become known as an artist endowed with an amazing voice of multiple colors: deep and powerful, yet fragile, all at the same time, which more and more listeners come to perceive as a gift. Today Sandra Nkaké presents us with a unique and personal gift, this album "Nothing for Granted” that she has composed and recorded in her own home. Tracklist: 1. Always the Same 3:31 2. Lester Young & Harry Edison The complete original LP Going for Myself (Verve MGV-8298) reuniting Lester Young and Harry “Sweets” Edison, one of Pres’ last studio albums ever. Backing Pres and Sweets are superb musicians like Oscar Peterson, Louie Bellson and Herb Ellis. Five extra tracks have been added to the contents of the original album, including three alternate takes and two tunes not included on the originally issued set. Includes an 8-page booklet. Original Downbeat ***** review: “The star system of rating never seemed more useless to me than right now. Faced with this LP, it is agonizing to rate it. Down Beat original ***** review: “This is greatness in jazz. There is an unmatched, limitless vitality to this band that makes it perpetually significant in the development of this music. It is a band of strength in soloists, ensemble drive, and charts. It is, undeniably, Basie’s band. In the relatively brief history of jazz, Basie has been a titan. Original Downbeat ***** review: “The Almeida album, of course, is a reissue, cut in 1953. The participants in those sessions now believe that it was through the success of this pioneer venture that musicians in Rio and Sao Paulo were inspired to incorporate the harmony and rhythm of modern jazz in their native music. Whatever the factual background, the Almeida-Shank concept undoubtedly was catalytic to some degree. The general mood of the sides by Almeida and Shank is quietly pleasant, melodically alluring, and rhythmically rather simpler than the newer albums.” (Leonard Feather) 01 ATÃBAQUE 2:49 / 02 AMOR FLAMENGO 2:57 / 03 STAIRWAY TO THE STARS 3:01 / 04 ACERTATE MAS 3:03 / 05 TERRA SÊCA 3:12 /6 SPEAK LOW 2:21 / 07 INQUIETAÇAO 3:04 / 08 BAA-TOO-KEE 3:03 / 09 CARINHOSO 3:35 / 10 TOCATA 4:47 / 11 HAZARDOUS 2:50 / 12 NONÔ 3:01 / 13 NOCTAMBULISM 4:39 / 14 BLUE BAIÃO 3:18 / 15 SIMPATICO 2:59* / 16 RIO RHAPSODY 3:43* / 17 NOCTURNO 3:34* / 18 LITTLE GIRL BLUE 2:43* / 19 CHORO IN “A” 2:35* / 20 MOOD ANTIGUA 4:08* / 21 THE COLOR OF HER HAIR 2:01* / 22 LONELY 3:57*/ 23 I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TIME IT WAS 2:51* / 24 CARIOCA HILLS 3:08* Total Time: 77:31 min.

Live at Jazz Club Friday, 1986 Morrissey / Mullen / Bolton / Levin Drummer Tony Levin and bassist Chris Bolton launched their weekly Jazz Club Friday in 1984 at the Barton Arms pub, next door to Birmingham's now demolished Aston Hippodrome. The venture was popular and lasted until 1991. Through his excellent contacts in music, Tony built up an impressive roster of visiting guest stars, among whom were regulars Dick Morrisey and Jim Mullen. They were a frequent and big attraction at the venue, appearing there many times during the late 1980s. Listeners packed the place to hear them. Unlike the repertoire of the Morrisey-Mullen band, which veered towards a funkier side of jazz, the tunes played by this quartet were classic bebop and hard bop, as on the five heard on this excellent and valuable first CD issue of a great night at the Jazz Club Friday.

The Next Page Eri Yamamoto Trio The Next Page is a collection of all-new original music that further demonstrates New York–based pianist/composer Eri Yamamoto’s gift for melodious songcraft as well as the intuitive rapport of her longstanding trio featuring bassist David Ambrosio and drummer Ikuo Takeuchi. It features 11 pieces presented in two half-hour sets, divided by a short break, mirroring the format of the group’s live performances at its decade-long weekly engagement at the historic Arthur’s Tavern in Greenwich Village. Eri Yamamoto is an internationally renowned musician who skillfully balances forward-thinking creativity with an invitingly listenable melodicism. Known to critics as “an expressively versatile pianist” (Philip Clark, The Wire) and “one of the busiest and most original jazz composers and improvisers on the scene today” (Joe Bendel, The Epoch Times), she has performed all over the world and recorded nine releases as a leader/co-leader since 2001.

Book of Mæ'bul (Another Kind of Sunrise) Darius Jones Quartet AUM Fidelity kicks off its 15th anniversary year with the release of New York-based alto saxophonist/composer Darius Jones’ Book of Mæ’bul (Another Kind of Sunrise), the third verse in his ongoing Man’ish Boy epic. This recording, featuring Jones’ working quartet with pianist Matt Mitchell, bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Ches Smith, introduces a new titular character, Mæ’bul, to the universe he is creating in close collaboration with graphic artist Randal Wilcox.

Since delivering “one of the great jazz debuts of the past decade” (Britt Robson, eMusic.com) in 2009, Darius Jones has been called “a singular talent” (Brian Morton, Jazz Journal), “one of the most impressive and unique voices of our time” (Troy Collins, AllAboutJazz.com) and “a skilled composer, a hugely soulful saxophonist, and an assured leader” (François Couture, AllMusic.com). “Jones seemed to arrive fully formed, emerging immediately as a leader rather than serving time in apprenticeships,” declares DownBeat ’s Shaun Brady in his February feature. “His collaborations have been selective: stints with bassist Trevor Dunn’s Proof Readers, drummer Mike Pride’s From Bacteria To Boys and the eardrum-piercing collective quartet Little Women. But his main project is to tell his own story, and his first two CDs only scratch the surface.” Starting with this new release, Jones is building on a very fruitful 2011 that saw him play numerous gigs under his own name, earn his second consecutive nomination for Up & Coming Artist of the Year at the Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards and appear on best-of-the-year lists in a variety of publications, including a Top 20 finish for his latest, Big Gurl, in the prestigious Rhapsody Jazz Critics’ Poll.

Inside the Beehive Audun Automat Audun Automat - was initiated in 2006 by bassist Audun Ellingsen and was originally a band inspired by European free jazz from the period around 1970. Since then the focus has moved from open forms to more composed structures and the expression has matured and become more nuanced. But we can still hear an echo of the 70´s in the instrumentation, the sound aesthetics and maybe even in the attitude to improvisation. The members of this group are part of the very active young, Norwegian jazz scene, and individually have played with many great musicians like Frøy Aagre, Chick Corea, Sonny Simmons, Bobo Stensson, Andy Sheppard, Tomasz Stanko and Kenny Wheeler. Audun Ellingsen studied jazz in Leeds, but is now based in Oslo. He has toured UK with Frøy Aagre and has collaborated with Matthew Bourne on the album Arch70 (pling004).

Inside the Beehive - is Audun Automat´s second release and consists of 8 pieces composed by Audun Ellingsen. The pieces vary from high-energy modal jazz to contemplative soundscapes - from chaos to perfect order. The music is based on strong melodies, complex structures, virtuosic improvisations and small hints of inspiration from far and near. The album is recorded on analogue equipment to get that organic sound of the 70´s.

Night Creatures Audun Automat Audun Automat´s first album was recorded on analogue equipment in 2008. The music on this album is electric, acoustic, dirty, noisy, melodious and beautiful jazz with a tinge of rock. The main inspiration comes from British jazz from the late 60´s represented by people like John Surman (The Trio) and John McLaughlin. You may also hear traces of Bitches Brew, early Garbarek, classical contemporary music and Indian classical music. The focus walks the line between the composed and the improvised, the ugly and the pretty, the ensemble and the soloist, and chaos and order. The music is both accessible and challenging at the same time. The album includes twelve compositions by Audun Ellingsen ranging from hard hitting jazz to meditative ballads and adventurous freeform.

Time of No Reply Misja Fitzgerald Michel Misja Fitzgerald Michel pays tribute to the magic of Nick Drake’s music on this mostly instrumental album where Me’shell Ndgeocello lends her voice and a few words to a song. A manner of saying that the voice of the Englishman is heard first and foremost in the notes and the rhythms he left to posterity. What Misja envies in Nick Drake is the musician and his spirit of invention, the incomparable beauty of his songs, the breadth of his language, the sophistication of his harmonies. The artist’s glow rather than his soul’s pain. It is only fair. But the Frenchman’s interpretations offer much more than that : they are exactly on key.
Label: No Format File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: NOF19 Barcode: 3700426917445 Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Misja Fitzgerald-Michel - acoustic guitars (6 & 12 strings) Olivier Koundouno - cello (2,6,7,11) Nicolas Repac - programming (4,5) Me'shell Ndegé Ocello - vocals (4) Hugh Coltman - harmonica and vocals (11)
The acoustic guitar is at the core of a disc that is much more than just another guitar record. First because here and there, other influences can be heard. Like that of the barrier-breaking cellist Olivier Koundouno, the arranger and lighting technician Nicolas Repac or the songwriter Hugh Coltman. Then because Misja, far from the isolated ghetto of “guitar music”, chose to adventure onto the boundless fields of musicality alone. His aesthetic choices stem from that adventure, that is, quite simply, a yearning for poetry and sensation. This explains his escapades towards baroque music or blues or even those appropriate freedoms taken with the compositions, either explored in the full scope of their harmonic possibilities, or brought back to their quintessential expression. Thus, everywhere, this lively celebration of a spirit of adventure and openness, that brings together a composer and an interpret who are forty years apart, draws a common space in which the inspirations and aspirations of one and the other can come together and mingle. Thus is the shining and initiatory path taken by Misja Fitzgerald Michel, on an album that sheds new light on the work of Nick Drake as much as on his own expression.

Cinema Beyrouth Toufic Farroukh The Lebanese saxophone player and composer Toufic Farroukh has chosen jazz as his favourite idiom - a jazz with the colours of the Orient, to reflect his career as an artist with his roots in two cultures, and one who is open to all the different forms of artistic expression in contemporary society, particularly dance, theatre and the cinema. “Cinema Beyrouth is a beautiful interplay of wind instruments in a rich and seductive orchestral arrangement. This polyphonic dialogue engages the listener as soon as the first measure of the CD begins. The instruments come together in a narrative that stimulates the imagination and transports the listener into the realm of imagery and story telling just as fairy tales and movies do. "Cinema Beyrouth" is a visual musical composition to be listen to with closed eyes and wide-open ears. It is a tribute to Beirut and its perpetual Cinema.

Beyond Words Ulrich Drechsler Trio 'Beyond Words' – where the power of words terminates, there begins the world of music – no frontiers, unambiguous. The possibility to reach people in an authentic and direct way and to touch them emotionally is an integral part of Ulrich Drechsler’s music. Intimacy, energy, passion and love – that’s what is most important to Drechsler and totally fulfils what he demands from music. And with the intimate instrumentation consisting of bass clarinet, piano and drums, he is capable of expressing it all. The Austrian piano player Benny Omerzell combines tremendous musicality with brilliant technique and sensitivity to the case. And Wolfgang Rainer is able to turn everything into music that comes to his hands. He creates sounds that go way beyond the common possibilities of playing the drums. In addition to that, the music on 'Beyond Words' gains extra dimension and depth due to the extraordinary deep singing of Efrat Alony, the Israeli singer, who cooperated on two pieces.

Tolkien’s Middle-earth—an operatic tapestry of cultures, histories, languages, and people. The Lord of the Rings Symphony – a six-movement piece spanning Howard Shores three film scores was created from the nearly 12 hours of music composed by Shore for the film trilogy. Building An Ark Groundation After their 14th and most extensive worldwide tour to date, Groundation will release their seventh studio album, entitled “Building An Ark”, via M’A Publishing/Soulbeats Records. On this album, lead singer Harrison Stafford develops his dream and vision to create an ark in order to preserve knowledge and positive consciousness. The band stays true to the essence of their dynamic and «melting pot» sound. Without guest artists, the group focuses on stretching their incredible virtuosity through 10 songs played in their characteristic “progressive reggae” and mixing a powerful jazzy-reggae vibe with hypnotic funk-based rhythms. The album goes from earthy percussion based tracks to complex impressionistic Dub compositions and this sophisticated music bed provides the basis for some of Harrison Stafford’s most fiery militant and conscious lyrics to date. «If you don’t know your past, you don’t know your future» - a statement that Groundation’s music captures fully! While capturing the essence of true Roots Reggae, the internationally acclaimed Groundation aims to take the art of genre-bending to new heights by blending elements of Jazz, Funk and transcendental Dub in their progressive amalgam of sound – some call it Progressive Reggae.

Groundation self-released their debut album, “Young Tree”, on their own Young Tree label in 1999. “Each One Teach One” followed in 2001. The disc featured guests Ras Michael and Marcia Higgs. “Hebron Gate”, released in 2003, included Reggae legends Don Carlos and the Congos as special guests. Don Carlos appeared again on their follow-up album “We Free Again” (2004) along with Apple Gabriel. In 2005, Groundation released the dub album “Dub Wars” then another studio album “Upon the Bridge” in 2006. From 2006 until 2009, the band engaged on its most ambitious touring schedule, headlining several renowned festivals such as Summerjam and Rototom. Over the past few years, Groundation played in over 30 countries on four continents. Groundation is not only Reggae’s most forward-looking band, they are a true movement. With the release of “Here I Am” in 2009 and a compilation of their best collaborations appropriately called “Gathering of the Elders” in 2011, it is fair to say that no other band today is playing music like Groundation. Whether on their masterfully self-produced studio albums or in the midst of their now legendary live performances, Groundation’s sound is both uncategorizable and yet somehow familiar. Whether a fan of Jazz improvisation, the deep grooves of Funk and Dub or the challenging consciousness of Roots Reggae, Groundation offers a point of contact to connect to the music.
