Electric Willow TENORS OF KALMA (Jimi TENOR / Kalle KALIMA / Joonas RIIPPA) Jimi Tenor and Kalle Kalima have made music together for about 10 years and now they are breaking new ground in a trio format with the acclaimed Finnish drummer Joonas Riippa. The music, mostly instrumental, is dark and edgy but danceable. Engrossing and occasionally unsettling. Saxophone and flute bring a jazzy tone to some tracks but guitar and electronica are to the fore, akin to Marc Ribot sitting in with Sun Ra. The ever-eccentric Jimi Tenor has never settled for the traditional role of a pop artist, instead inhabiting a strange musical universe all of his own, mashing rock, funk and electronica into eminently digestible sonic savouries. Since his breakthrough hit single Take Me Baby in 1995 he has released multiple albums on cutting edge labels like Warp, Kitty-yo, Ubiquity and Strut.

Heads Up ANNIQUE Annique’s voice is for the inner ear and open heart, a soul singer’s instrument carrying the freight of past greats while trailing its own strong colours. Growing up in Rainham, Essex, Annique travelled out on the strength of her voice, studying at the Academy of Contemporary Music before working with the likes of The Streets and Gorillaz, drum’n’bass outfit Step 13 and then teaming up with Koby Israelite at his south London studio for a series of informal writing sessions that have become Heads Up. Together, Annique and Koby summon up a smokily atmospheric, sophisticated adult pop, suffused with angelic choruses, strong lyrics and heartfelt soul. You can hear World Music, Jazz and Rock. Young at Heart IDA SAND Sweden's Ida Sand had already included an interpretation of the Neil Young classic "Heart of Gold" on her album "True Love", however that Sand would now dedicate the entire "Young At Heart" album to the Canadian folk-rocker and singer-songwriter legend was entirely unexpected. Sand mastered the challenge with seasoned support. Her mentor Nils Landgren again took on the producer role for "Young At Heart", and also added his distinctive soul trombone and unmistakable voice to the equation. Ida Sand's husband Ola Gustafsson acts as a kind of Neil Young alter ego on the guitars. Jesper Nordenström on keyboards and organ, drummer Christer Jansson and e.s.t. bassist Dan Berglund make up the band. Tenor saxophonist Per "Texas" Johansson, renowned for his soul sound, and Sven Lindvall on the e-bass joined the party as guests, along with famous Swedish Rock singer Bo Sundström and background vocalists.

Heart of Darkness NATALIA MATEO The 31 year-old vocalist Natalia Mateo is a wanderer between the worlds - musically and in real life. Born in Poland, raised in Austria and now living in Germany, she has absorbed the most varied of impressions and cultures into her being. She draws from the Slavic ballad tradition, from American jazz and singer-songwriters ranging from Joni Mitchell to Amy Macdonald, and from contemporary pop and rock music, covering Lou Reed, Tom Waits and Lady Gaga. Mateo’s music is a highly personal declaration of love to tradition and modernity, to familiarity on the one hand and on the other to the wanderlust throbbing in her heart and head, to the beauty of emotional attachment, of deepest interpersonal relationships and the independence we live while in them. Keepin' a Style Alive JAN PRAX QUARTETT With its fresh, pulsating sound, the Jan Prax Quartett is seen as one of the promising newcomers of Young German Jazz. The four musicians passionately and playfully bring together traditional and modern elements of jazz and put their own stamp on it. Inspired by the timeless depth of the music of American jazz legends, the band's own compositions are a vibrant avowal to bebop and hard bop. “Keepin’ A Style Alive”, their debut album, is an expression of love for the music of Prax's role models, such as John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and Jackie McLean, while at the same time representing a deliberate commitment to the jazz tradition. But Jan Prax does not fall back on well-known standards to realize his musical ideas, he composes his own pieces, in part together with his pianist Martin Sörös. The result is grooving, energetic music with a modern and individual style that shows what living jazz tradition means to a young musician like Prax with a so eminently mature sound.

Going Home JOEY CALDERAZZO Since the beginning of his illustrious career, Joey Calderazzo has mainly played in quartets led by remarkable saxophonists, namely Michael Brecker and Branford Marsalis (who guests on one track here). As a musician and composer, the pianist had become comfortable in this format, developing an intensity in his playing and predilections in his composing that those ensemble’s sizes demanded. Calderazzo saw the establishment of his trio as a means to strengthen his craft by working on material and musical concepts that he would not ordinarily work on. Joey Calderazzo views his new recording, Going Home (Sunnyside) as a snapshot of a work in progress, an experiment that continues to progress and wield an abundance of intriguing results. The fact that Calderazzo views his recent performances and recordings with a trio as an experiment should highlight the fact that he wants to continue to hone his craft and progress as a musician. Going Home is a tremendous document of his musical process and a milestone of his progress, synthesizing his decades of creativity into something new, sublime, and supremely centered as a composer, improviser and bandleader.

My Ideal GLENN ZALESKI Pianist Glenn Zaleski's debut recording as a leader, My Ideal, is a tremendously varied and expertly wrought piano trio performance of compositions well-known in the genre and a couple that have the makings to be. To insure that the music was exploratory and new, Zaleski enlisted the talents of bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Craig Weinrib to assist in generating arrangements that avoid contrivance but are played both proficiently and naturally. After developing a solid musical foundation as a part of the Massachusetts jazz scene, Zaleski attended the Brubeck Institute in Stockton, California where he met numerous likeminded musicians, many of whom he still plays with today. On his twentieth birthday, Zaleski moved to New York City, where he studied at the New School and soon began his career as a professional musician. Ravi Coltrane nurtured the young talent, and contributes to the closing track here, Jerome Kern’s “I’m Old Fashioned” which features a wonderful performance by Ravi on tenor sax on his own exquisitely expressive arrangement.

Count till Zen Ernst REIJSEGER / Harmen FRAANJE / Mola SYLLA Reijseger, Fraanje, Sylla, who understand each other blindly, form a unity in which musical equality goes without saying. This trio convinces by the energy of "unplugged" music and the self-developed music cosmos with its own compositions, between fascinating vocal-melodies, high energy grooves and harmonies - with a rather calm, lyrical general mood. Each song of the album tells a story: In "Perhaps" Mola Sylla sings about Dakar, the capital of his homeland Senegal. "Out of the Wilderness" talks about a bird who does not want to be caged even he is getting food every day. The bird wants to fly away to live in freedom instead of having somebody to take care about him. "Count till Zen" reveals a very unique musical experience. Reijseger, Fraanje, Sylla win over their audiences with a high degree of musicality and a sensational musical flow.

Eperdument... Lost in Love - Persian Love Songs
ALIREZA GHORBANI In recent years Alireza Ghorbani has established himself as on of the new generation's masters of Persian song. This recognition has come about as much by the range of his repertoire, accuracy and naturalness of voice as it has by his impeccable taste and uncompromising approach. With him, the musical tradition has been revitalised, renewed, transcended. Firstly by his real musical creativity in interpreting new compositions inspired by contemporary poets. Then in the technical and stylistic contribution he brings in to play on the evolution of the musical tradition. Virtuosity, ornamentation, invention, the ability to improvise on the poetic texts may be qualities common to several current Iranian artists, but what remains remarkable about Ghorbani is the conjunction of all these perfections in a single singer.
