Brothers in Bamako Eric Bibb & Habib Koite “I watched my parents and it rubbed off on me...” This is how Habib Koité traces the origins of his profession and talent as a 21st century griot. Eric Bibb has a similar background: his father, Leon Bibb, is a singer well known in musical theatre and folk music circles and Eric is also the godson of the famous singer and activist Paul Robeson. In other words, Eric grew up surrounded by music. Habib is the heir to an ancestral knowledge set to song that places him among the most influential voices of contemporary Africa. Eric has established his name in the new generation of bluesmen without renouncing the legacy of folk and gospel. What could be more natural than for this Malian and African-American to join the rhythms of their guitars and voices in some transatlantic blues?

MAMADOU KONE - percussions KAFOUNE - backing vocals on track 2 «L.A» OLLIHAAVISTO - pedal steel guitar on «Blowin’ In The Wind»

Two popular singers, two singers rooted in an ancient tradition and everything it infers: knowledge, a unique musical repertoire, and a way of using song to pass a social message. Both have humbly acquired a sense for song that permeates society. Without any precise agenda in mind, they have developed a common repertoire. Tongues loosened to the rhythm of guitars and the path took its natural course. Each finds something familiar in the song of the other. Habib sings about his era, his environment. He lives, breathes and sings Africa, but an altered Africa, transformed by the rest of the world. Eric is receptive to this approach. And without consciously deciding, songs with a social message emerge. 1. On my way to Bamako 3:15 / 2. L.A. 5:38 / 3. Touma Ni Kelen - Needed Time 4:41 / 4. Tombouctou 4:03 / 5. Yatra Ivo Neame Ivo Neame is a musician of immense talent. He has an astute musical intelligence with a natural improvisatory flair that has seen him develop into one of the busiest and most in demand players on the UK scene. With Yatra, his third album and second on Edition, Ivo Neame has taken control of his own destiny and produced an album that will not only impress but look to propel Neame's career onto a new trajectory. He has pushed himself further than in any of his previous releases; as a pianist, mulit-instrumentalist, composer and bandleader. Written in a very creative time, between periods of intense touring, Yatra is his most defining and original work to date performed with such an idiosyncratic style by one of the classiest bands in the UK. Yatra is bold, animated and highly developed, finding a fine state of balance between complexity and simplicity, eschewing the predictable so that the listener is forced to engage fully with the music. There are moments of beauty, introspection and humour all delivered with an exuberance only achievable by a band of this quality and class. 'Yatra' is a personal journey of self-discovery for Neame, and one he is very happy to share.

Alter Ego Yaron Herman Born in Tel Aviv on July 12th 1981, Yaron seemed destined for a brilliant career as a junior basketball player on Israel's national team, but his dreams of becoming a sportsman were interrupted when he badly injured his knee. He was just sixteen. So he turned to the piano, studying the instrument using a method based on Philosophy, Mathematics and Psychology. Today, Yaron is considered one of the best pianists of his generation, hailed by the public and media alike in Europe, Asia and The United States. Searching for his identity, Herman draws his audience deep into his musical cosmos. On 'Alter Ego' a kaleidoscope of memories passes by – some longingly solemn, some full of passion and joy. Clearly referring to the Jewish musical tradition, Herman presents a loving homage to his origin.

For the first time, Yaron has expressed such emotions on record with a quartet. Alongside him, on saxophone, is Emile Parisien, another brilliant ambassador for his generation, one that bubbles freely without any complexes; on double bass is Stéphane Kerecki, a loyal friend and peerless bassist who regularly plays on tour with Yaron. Finally, there's also his "long-time brother", Ziv Ravitz, an Israeli drummer who completes the line-up marvellously. And they have a special guest: saxophonist Logan Richardson skilfully contributes that special colour which typifies the new generation of musicians from New York. 1. Atlas and Axis / 2. Mojo / 3. Reunion - Live in New York Sam Rivers Trio A historically important new release, Sam Rivers "Reunion - Live in New York" features the reunion of octogenarian saxophonist/flutist/pianist Rivers with his groundbreaking trio of two-time Grammy Award winner Dave Holland on bass and Barry Altschul on drums. The venerated band was a mainstay at Rivers' Studio RivBea - the most famous venue during the "loft jazz" movement of the 1970s - and was well-known for its marathon fully -improvised concerts. Their powerful rapport gives no hint of the fact that they had not played together in 25 years when this concert took place in 2007. Rivers played with such disparate musicians as Miles Davis, T-Bone Walker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Cecil Taylor in a musical career that spanned over 50 years. He is best known for his heralded albums on Blue Note and Impulse! of the 1960s and 1970s and two Grammy-nominated big band recordings for RCA. The Rivers/Holland/Altschul trio, though revered in jazz circles, recorded rarely and those out of print records are highly sought after by collectors. Unfortunately, Rivers did not live to see the release of this CD; he passed away on December 26, 2011.

Essence of Ellington / Live in Milano William Parker Orchestra Preeminent jazz composer/bassist William Parker has been working with large ensembles from the very beginning of presenting his own work as a leader in the mid-70s. His Essence of Ellington project is the very latest manifestation of his orchestral concepts, following in similar form on the extraordinary Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield project which was definitively presented on record by the acclaimed 2010 release, I Plan To Stay A Believer (AUM062/63). The Orchestra here interprets selections from the Duke Ellington book, and new William Parker compositions inspired by the essence of Ellington. Featured in the Orchestra are some of the most highly gifted jazz musicians living today, spanning generations. Essence of Ellington's world-wide concert debut took place this past February in Milano, Italy. That performance and the recording thereof both turned out so tremendously that William and AUM felt it needed to be released as soon as possible. Over 2 hours of transformative exuberance and tenderness, is here presented in its entirety.

Highlights include “In A Sentimental Mood” presented in duo (then trio) by Dave Burrell & Darius Jones (& Scottish vocalist Ernie Odoom), updating the classic rendering by Ellington & Coltrane. “Caravan” is introduced with an extended and phenomenal alto solo by Rob Brown; when the full orchestra hits it’s immediately evident that this tune hasn't been heard with any greater vibrancy than. Equal perhaps yes, but not greater. Each of Parker’s original compositions and performances thereof ("Portrait of Louisiana, "Ebony Interlude", "The Essence of Ellington") are again exceptional. Good lord, every piece on this album is a highlight!

Shifting Gears Jerry Bergonzi Jerry Bergonzi's quintessentially modern tenor sax style melds the linear, chromatic approach of such greats as Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter with the horizontal, chordal techniques of John Coltrane. His tone is full-bodied with an occasional hard edge, enhanced by a savvy use of dynamics and creatively varied articulation. He's an expressive and versatile player, as comfortable playing the hoariest of jazz standards as he is playing an Ornette-ish free tune. Above all, his manner of playing is utterly spontaneous and distinctive. With such contemporaries as Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker and Dave Liebman, Bergonzi has helped define the modern approach to his instrument. Featuring pianist Bruce Barth and trumpeter Phil Grenadier, this is Bergonzi’s first quintet recording for Savant Records and finds in him in fine form as a player and as a composer. Jerry’s quirky compositions always challenge the listener but, at the same time, never do they alienate them, keeping one foot within the bounds of tradition, even if it is sometimes just within those bounds. Alone Together With Bobby Rose

Pat Martino Pat Martino is a legend for more than his speed-demon virtuosity at high-velocity tempos or his angelic harmonies on ballads. He has also faced death several times and tells the tale of his survival and recovery with a perspective akin to a zen master. These recordings from Martino's personal collection document the easy interplay and instant chemistry that he had forged with rhythm guitarist Bobby Rose on their first duet tour together during the summer of 1977. Some of the tracks come from home recordings done at Martino's home in Philadelphia while others were recorded in live settings, either in Ann Arbor or Toronto. They document a brief but fertile period of creativity for Pat in a format which he was never to revisit on such a regular basis. Bobby Rose is the perfect accompanist for Pat telepathically locked into his playing, anticipating every harmonic twist and turn of the road down which Pat was to take him. Both men were at the very peak of their powers during these years and to have these superb performances preserved for posterity is a true gift for guitarists and jazz fans in general.

Mr Lucky A Tribute to Sammy Davis Jr.

Harold Mabern Harold Mabern, one of jazz's most enduring and dazzlingly skilled pianists and long-time HighNote sideman, steps into the spotlight as a leader on this recording full of high spirits, driving energy and great jazz. Hailing from Memphis, a city that produced saxophonists George Coleman and Charles Lloyd, trumpeter Booker Little and pianist Phineas Newborn, Jr. Mabern started out as a drummer but switched to piano, keeping that rhythmic drive in his keyboard technique. During his over half-century on the scene as sideman and leader, he has played with such greats as Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Wes Montgomery, Blue Mitchell and Sarah Vaughan. With his long-time colleague, Eric Alexander, Mabern romps and stomps through an interesting repertoire of songs associated with, surprisingly enough, Sammy Davis Jr., for whose musicianship and his humanity the pianist has a great deal of respect and admiration. And it is the same type of musicianship and humanity which comes to the fore in Mr. Lucky, Harold Mabern's first recording as a leader for HighNote Records.

My Muse George Cables Pianist George Cables has been one of the most sought-after sidemen in jazz for more than four decades. His versatile playing and ability to bring out the best in any group's sound have made him indispensible to artists like Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and Sonny Rollins. In the 70's Cables worked mostly on the West Coast in bands led by Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson, Art Pepper, Woody Shaw, and Freddie Hubbard, and finished that decade with a two-year stint as Dexter Gordon's pianist. Having absorbed a huge variety of sounds and styles and incorporated them into his playing -- from harmonically adventurous post-bop to gospel-tinged blues -- Cables mines the mother load of jazz elements on his newest HighNote release, fusing Bud Powell's feeling, Fats Waller's juke joint geniality and Art Tatum's quick wit into his own persuasive utterances. Cables' searching and intense interpretations use the source material as a jumping-off point for his unique and quirky improvisations, and his writing is more profound and more expressive than ever.

Quiver Ron Miles / Bill Frisell / Brian Blade Born out of a long collaborative history, the great chemistry of Denver-based trumpeter Ron Miles and guitarist Bill Frisell is amply documented on a number of Frisell recordings and their sublime duet album Heaven from 2002. Joined by master drummer Brian Blade, they teamed up again in 2010 and 2011 under Ron's leadership for a few select concerts in Denver and Boulder, and cut a record entitled Quiver, the album features some of the most inspired music these three players have made in recent years. Primarily featuring Miles's own tunes, the recording also includes interpretations of Duke Ellington and Henry Mancini compositions, as well as a wonderful song first recorded by Bix Beiderbecke and Bing Crosby in 1929, "There Ain't No Sweet Man That's Worth the Salt of My Tears."

Wowowonder Lisa Wahlandt Lisa Wahlandt´s new CD is an entertaining and surprising composite of contemporary musical styles, from jazz to world music to songwriter pop. Seemingly disparate musical elements bind together to form an artistic entity lubricated by free-floating, syllable-bending vocal improvisations; a heartwarming rendition of Dylan´s soulful 'Sister' (so rarely reworked); even a Beatles song: 'Norwegian wood', in a version so daring in it´s tonal jumpyness and rhythmic indetermination that the singer´s peer Joni Mitchell actually might tip her hat. Ms. Wahlandt´s piano trio does a great job throughout. There is a feeling of friendship shining through the music, of friendship human as well as artistic. "Sometimes“, says the singer, "bands are like lovers..."

Cross My Palm Andy Hague Bristol-based trumpeter Andy Hague releases his first nationally distributed CD in over a decade. In a set of melodic, rhythmically punchy originals Hague cites compositional influences Horace Silver, Wynton Marsalis, Dave Douglas & Kenny Dorham. With inspired soloing from all concerned, this highly listenable recording should surely gain Hague wider recognition. Hague’s current quintet line-up is Andy Hague – trumpet/flugelhorn, long-term associates Ben Waghorn – saxes and Jim Blomfield – piano, and younger generation rising stars Will Harris – double bass and Mark Whitlam – drums. On this recording they are augmented on two tracks each by saxophonist Jake McMurchie and vocalist Brigitte Beraha.

Label: Winter&Winter File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: 917182-1 Barcode: 025091718214 Price: FULL Format: 1 Disque Vinyle Paul Motian - drums Bill Frisell - guitar Thomas Morgan - bass Petra Haden - vocals

The New York Times: "The Windmills of your Mind – Mr. Motian's last album, on Winter & Winter – features one of his closest collaborators, the guitarist Bill Frisell, and one of his newer protégés, the bassist Thomas Morgan. Standing humbly in the foreground is the vocalist Petra Haden, whose father, the bassist Charlie Haden, had a musical bond with Mr. Motian stretching back more than 40 years. Singing standards with forthright sweetness and hardly a jot of flowery affectation, Ms. Haden creates a serene foil for Mr. Motian's brushwork, with its cobwebby flutter. And interspersed throughout are a handful of his originals, including the country-tinged 'Little Foot', the darkly reflective 'Backup' and the magnificently somber 'Trieste'. "The Windmills of Your Mind is simply sublime." all about jazz
