ELGAR: Symphony No. 2 Mina, Carissima, Chanson de Matin "What’s the matter with them Billy? They sit there like a lot of stuffed pigs!" Elgar commented to his friend W.H Reid, the leader of the Queen’s Hall Orchestra after the chilly reception given to the 2nd Symphony at its premiere in 1911. More emotionally complex and ambiguous than the first symphony, the 2nd seems to hint at the apocalyptic events that would be unleashed just three years on. "Be like a woman dropping a flower on a man’s grave" wrote the composer of the ‘Spirit of Delight' theme in the coda of the second movement. This eagerly awaited Elgar 2 from Petrenko and the RLPO will further delight those fans who bought their recording of the 1st Symphony, released on Onyx to critical acclaim last year. BEETHOVEN: Violin Sonata No.6 in A Op.30/1 Violin Sonata No.9 in A Op.47 'Kreutzer’ James Ehnes Andrew Armstrong The duo of old friends James Ehnes and Andrew Armstrong has established itself as one of the most exciting of our times. Their albums of violin sonatas by Franck & Strauss, and Debussy, Elgar & Respighi have been praised by critics worldwide. For this new album they turn to Beethoven and two A major sonatas with very different moods. The 9th, ‘Kreutzer’ sonata, is a huge work, heroic and turbulent in character – a kind of concerto for violin and piano. It is middle period Beethoven at its most dramatic. By contrast, the 6th sonata is a serene, introspective work of great beauty which has tended to be overlooked by its more outward-looking siblings. The intimacy of this sonata – especially the slow movement - is all the more surprising as the original finale was removed by the composer, to become the finale of the ‘Kreutzer’. Beethoven wrote the gentle variations to conclude the 6th sonata.

He is a firm favourite with Classic FM listeners, and this new album will be eagerly awaited by them. Thomas ADES: Trilogy (Polaris, Tevot, Asyla) Brahms London Symphony Orchestra Thomas Adès For his LSO Live debut, Thomas Adès, the acclaimed conductor, pianist and composer, conducts all of his seminal ‘Trilogy’ works - Asyla, Polaris and Tevot. Recorded in 2016 during his first LSO ‘Composer Focus’, this is the first time all three works have been presented together on one album, offering a unique chance to hear the musical development of one of the world’s foremost contemporary composers, in Dolby’s new Atmos surround sound format. Composed in 1997 and winner of the 1999 Grawemeyer award, 'Asyla' is the earliest of the Trilogy pieces, and one of the works that announced Adès as a major new voice. Sir Simon Rattle, a long-time champion of the composer, conducted the work’s premiere with the CBSO as well as programming it in his inaugural concert as Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic. The title is the plural form of the word asylum, and plays on the dual meaning of both madhouse and sanctuary. Typical of his orchestral works, it utilises a large orchestra (including six percussionists and a variety of treated pianos) to achieve an array of colours, textures and timbres. It also showcases Ades’ wide-ranging influences, with a ‘four-on-the-floor’ techno drumbeat as the impetus behind the famous 'Ecstasio' movement. 'Tevot' is a one-movement symphony that builds upon the ideas of 'Asyla' and pushes the players to the limits of their Label: LSO Live technical ability, with long passages written in stratospheric registers. Again, there is a dual meaning at play in the title, File Under: Classical/Orchestral as 'Tevot' is the Hebrew word for bars as well as closely related to the word used in the Bible when referring to Noah’s Catalogue No: LSO0798 ark. Adès himself explains: “I liked the idea that the bars of the music were carrying the notes as a sort of family through Barcode: 822231179825 the piece. And they do, because without bars, you’d have musical chaos. But I was thinking about the ark, the vessel, in NORMAL Price the piece as the earth. The earth would be a spaceship, a ship that carries us - and several other species! - through the chaos of space in safety. It sounds a bit colossal, but it’s the idea of the ship of the world.” Format: SACD+BLURAY The final Trilogy work, 'Polaris', was composed in 2010 and is subtitled ‘A Voyage for Orchestra’. Taking the North Star Packaging: cristal as its inspiration, despite a relatively short running time it conjures up a definite sense of vastness, with musicians placed offstage to enhance the sense of space. The piece is built up from a simple, looping pattern of notes in the piano, that Samuel Dale Johnson [baritone] London Symphony Orchestra evolves to suggest a massive spiral with musical magnetic fields expanding, exploding and beautifully rearranging Thomas Adès themselves. The album also includes the Adès miniature 'Brahms'. Sung here by baritone Sameul Dale Johnson, it is an "Even as the UK is brimming with wonderful ‘anti-homage’ to the composer inspired by the cold logic of his music, taking his compositional compulsions to extreme young composers, I think few would dispute that conclusions. Tom Adès may be the most extravagantly gifted of them all" Sir Simon Rattle on Thomas Adès
"An exceptional concert which was totally convincing both in performance and the quality of the music being presented. My concert of the year so far." Bachtrack*****

BACH: The Partitas BWV825-830 Richard Egarr
Label: harmonia mundi File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: HMM907593/94 Barcode: 3149020759325 2 FOR 1.5 Format: 2 CD Packaging: digipack Richard Egarr [harpsichord Joel Katzman, Amsterdam, 1991, after Ruckers, Antwerp, 1638] Tuning: A = 399 • Temperament: R. Egarr based on 18th C. 6th comma
Any composer’s Op.1 is a big deal. Bach modelled his own after Kuhnau’s 'Neue Clavier Übung', books 1 and 2 of which were published in 1689 and 1692. Bach’s ability to ‘see’ and create a long-term ‘project’ has its spooky beginnings here. Although the music that inhabits the six Partitas was ready and waiting, rather than publish them together, Bach staggered their delivery. Partita 1 came in 1726, with the other five appearing gradually over the next four years, until finally in 1731 the entire six Partitas were presented as his ‘Clavir [sic] Ubung . . . Opus 1 . . . 1731’. Bach infuses this seemingly effortless music with godly patterns and personal algorithms of stunning brilliance. Many pages have been spent in the pursuit of secret codes in Bach’s music: for many, a contentious subject. Bach began by publishing Partita 1 in 1726 – when he was 41 years old. Needless to say the final movement of the set (the 41st movement), has as its theme a subject containing 14 notes. The family name not only gave rise to a direct musical melody [BACH = B flat/A/C/B natural], but for Johann Sebastian a pair of deliciously mirrored numbers with which he was wont to sign his name at beginnings and endings in particular. If A=1, B=2 etc. (I and J are counted as the same letter), then: BACH = [2+1+3+8] 14 JSBACH = [9+18+14] 41 The above is wilfully paraphrased from Richard Egarr's own superb notes from this new recording of the Partitas; crowning his already extensive series of Bach's harpsichord works, and illuminating every one of their multiple facets. CD 1 1-6 Partita I BWV 825 in B flat major / Si bémol majeur / B-Dur 7-12 Partita II BWV 826 in C minor / ut mineur/ c-Moll 13-19 Partita IV BWV 828 in D major / Ré majeur / D-Dur CD 2 1-8 Partita III BWV 827 in A minor / la mineur / a-Moll 9-15 Partita V BWV 829 in G major / Sol majeur / G-Dur 16-22 Partita VI BWV 830 in E minor / mi mineur / e-Moll "Egarr displays an extraordinary tonal range, from harp-like resonance to transparency. The best harpsichord recital of these Suites on disc.” BBC Music Magazine*****

Going well beyond mere historical interest, this album unveils the charms of a repertoire that delighted Parisian concert halls and salons throughout the 19th century. It demonstrates how the viola finally emerged from the violin’s shadow thanks to virtuoso playing, now resuscitated by the talent of Antoine Tamestit and Cédric Tiberghien in pieces which offer much more than the exquisite languors of bel canto. Italian for 'beautiful singing' or 'beautiful song', the term remains vague and ambiguous but is commonly used to evoke a lost singing tradition; in this case the famed singing tone of Antoine Tamestit's viola, a 1672 Stradivarius, loaned by the Habisreutinger Foundation. Born in Paris, Antoine Tamestit studied with Jesse Levine at Yale University and with Tabea Zimmermann. He has won several coveted prizes including the William Primrose Competition, first prize at the Young Concert Artists (YCAT) international auditions, a place on BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists Scheme and a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. Antoine Tamestit’s distinguished discography includes Berlioz’s 'Harold en Italie', which was recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev and released in 2015 by LSO Live. For Naïve he has recorded three of the Bach Suites, Hindemith solo and concertante works recorded with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and Paavo Järvi, and an earlier recording of 'Harold' with Marc Minkowski and Les Musicians du Louvre. A New Heaven Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford Owen Rees Signum’s second disc with the Choir of the Queen’s College Oxford is centred around the concept of ‘revelation’, both divine revelation (particularly the apocalyptic visions of the Book of Revelation) and revelatory visions of earth and heaven. The bulk of the pieces on the recording are inspired by the extraordinary visions of John, the writer of the Book of Revelation, describing the ravaging of the world through divine judgement; the battles between good and evil; and the world’s eventual remaking as ‘a new heaven and a new earth’ in which death and suffering are no more. The disc features three new commissions, by Phillip Cooke, Toby Young and Marco Galvani, who was a final-year student at Queen’s at the time of recording.

Handel in Ireland Vol. 1 Bridget Cunningham Bridget Cunningham marks St Patrick’s Day with a new harpsichord CD that gives a glimpse into Handel’s fascinating time in Dublin. In 1741 at the age of 56, following a financially difficult time in London and with fashions turning against Italian opera, Handel went to Dublin for nine months. At that time it was a thriving musical city, and the second largest in the British Isles after London. The story of this fascinating trip is told in both music and detailed accompanying notes by harpsichordist and musicologist Bridget Cunningham. This disc is part of Cunningham’s ongoing series with the ensemble London Early Opera, which has already seen releases of several volumes of Handel’s music, including 'Handel in Italy' and 'Handel at Vauxhall'.

MARTINI: Requiem, for Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette GLUCK: De Profundis
Festivalchor Musica Franconia, La Banda / Wolfgang Riedelbauch Louis XVI was the last king of France (1774-92) in the line of Bourbon monarchs preceding the French Revolution of 1789. Louis and his queen consort, Marie-Antoinette, were guillotined in 1793 on charges of counter-revolution. Following the abdication of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1814, the Bourbons returned to power in France and restored the system of monarchy under Louis XVIII. During this process, they also introduced a number of highly symbolic cultural acts as a public representation of the Bourbon dynasty. In 1815, the new king Louis XVIII had the mortal remains of Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette removed from the Cimetière de la Madeleine in a solemn ceremony, taken to Saint Denis and placed in separate graves in the crypt. It therefore came about that Jean Paul Egide Martini, 'Surintendant de la musique du roi' and composer of the famous 'Plaisir d’Amour', was offered the prestigious commission to compose the first large-scale Requiem in memory of Louis XVI. His work was first performed in the Cathedral of Saint Denis on 21 January 1816, the anniversary of the execution.

The selection from these works presented on this recording splendidly documents the contemporary violin technique. Farina not only influenced the great German violinists of his time but also of later generations with names like Schmelzer, Biber and Walther. Leila Schayegh’s recordings have been rewarded twice with the Diapason d‘Or of the Year (France), Gramophone Editor‘s Choice [for Bach Sonatas on Glossa GCD923507] and a long list of the best German record prizes. MOZART: Piano Concertos KV 271, 413, 414 Vol. 6
Arthur Schoonderwoerd Cristofori Arthur Schoonderwoerd, one of today's most sought-after interpreters on the fortepiano, presents the sixth volume of Mozart's piano concertos on the Accent label with this release of three early concertos, nos. 9, 11 and 12. As they have already done on their previous issues, the aim of Schoonderwoerd and his ensemble Cristofori here is to liberate Mozart's works from traditional 19th-century sound concepts. Each string part in the orchestra is played by just one performer; the result is a very slender, transparent sound that supports the solo instrument without ever obscuring.

J.S.BACH: Goldberg Variations BWV988 Davide Pozzi “Despite the numerous recordings and historical performances on the piano which have made the Goldberg Variations a heritage of our culture, it seems obvious that the instrument for which they were originally written for is to be favoured in order to offer a listening experience in which all the nuances of the work are completely restored. The possibilities of variation in sound and the choice of a historical tuning help to create a comprehensive framework for Bach’s intentions. For this CD, I have chosen a Werckmeister temperament to serve as a base and in which I have modified some fifths for the variations in minor. This results in a clear and relaxed light cast upon on the variations in major, whereas variations in minor, which only seem to tarry before flat signs and then modulate in distant keys, are given a much more animated, almost coarse slant.” Davide Pozzi 1-32 Goldberg Variations BWV988
