Snowmelt MARIUS NESET & LONDON SINFONIETTA Marius Neset burst onto the scene with his first album as leader in 2011, and was instantly hailed as combining “Brecker's power and Garbarek's tonal delicacy” and being “on his way to being one of the biggest new draws on the circuit” (Guardian). The album "Snowmelt" is his most ambitious, cherished and personal project to date. In these concentrated works, Neset has sought out chaos and dissonance, he has also been drawn to lyricism and tenderness, and then worked at finding a balance between the extremes, using compositional methods which subliminally bring out the continuities between them. The three main compositions on “Snowmelt” are the fruit of intense work during the period from 2012 to 2015. Given Neset's long, considered process, the scale of the undertaking, and the sheer amount of work, time and thought that have gone into his compositions, it comes as no surprise that each listen brings seems to bring more revelations. There is always something more here for the listener to discover and unravel.

Colors for the Masters STEVE TURRE Trombonist and composer Steve Turre shows off his full spectrum of sounds on his latest album, Colors for the Masters. The album’s ten songs, evenly split between jazz standards and original tunes that carry the torch for the tradition, offer a dazzling array of hues played in tribute to and alongside some of the elders that have inspired Turre. The leader’s own trombone virtuosity is only one color in a palette that also includes a variety of mutes and his wholly original conch shell artistry. Colors for the Masters teams Turre with a rhythm section of legendary elders, each of whom shaped the trombonist’s distinctive voice: pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jimmy Cobb. On four tunes the band is joined by saxophonist Javon Jackson, like Turre an alumni of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers; and for the album’s final tune, a stirring rendition of Jobim’s “Corcovado” on which Turre shows off his innovative shell playing, virtuoso percussionist Cyro Baptista also joins in. Together, they pay electrifying homage to other, departed luminaries like John Coltrane, J.J. Johnson, and Thelonious Monk.

Latin American Songbook EDWARD SIMON The music of Latin America has long been some of the world’s most beloved, whether Brazilian bossa nova, Argentinean tango, Cuban bolero or irresistible songs from Chile, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Pianist Edward Simon – a native of Venezuela who has made a name for himself over decades in America as a jazz pianist, bandleader and composer-arranger, along with being a Guggenheim Fellow and member of the hit SFJAZZ Collective – has created fresh, supple interpretations of melodies from all these countries for Latin American Songbook. The album – the San Francisco Bay Area-based pianist’s 14th – sees Simon leading his working trio with bassist Joe Martin and drummer Adam Cruz. The trio’s subtly virtuosic performances brim with lyricism, color and groove, giving instrumental voice to songs originally made famous by such singers as Caetano Veloso, Mercedes Sosa and Carlos Gardel.

Into the Mystic DAVID HELBOCK TRIO The Austrian pianist David Helbock belongs to the generation of jazz musicians who are heading off in their own individual directions, pushing the boundaries, radically re-configuring our understanding of what old and new music is, re-aligning composition and improvisation, and challenging common pre-conceptions about style and personality. “These days jazz musicians often take pop songs as their point of departure,” says Helbock. “Speaking frankly, it doesn’t matter what you cover, whether it’s pop, classical music, world music - whatever. But what does matter is what you then make of it.”

Label: ACT Music File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: ACT9833-2 Barcode: 614427983329 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack David Helbock - piano Raphael Preuschl - bass ukulele Reinhold Schmölzer - drums

Helbock draws on a wide range of sources of inspiration to make his music. Incidents in everyday life and nature are in there, but also a wealth of musical influences, and written texts of all kinds. Now, however, the musical storyteller Helbock feels he has reached the point when it is right to tie all these threads together, and to concentrate on the mystical heart of what it is to make music. In this trio recording with Raphael Preuschl, on the very rare bass ukelele, and Reinhold Schmölzer on drums, Helbock is adventuring “Into the Mystic” on several levels. The album is enriched by all kinds of mythology, from sagas about the gods of ancient Greece, to the cosmology of the earth, and a multitude of literary, filmic and artistic inspirations. The Groove Governor JIMMY RUFFIN Elemental Music proudly presents, for the first time ever on CD, Jimmy Ruffin’s The Groove Governor. Although it didn’t chart, "Let's Say Goodbye Tomorrow" has a good chorus and should have done better. The producer employs a spoken intro on Burt Bacharachs' "This Guy's In Love With You," to good effect. "Living in a World I Created for Myself" has hit qualities but failed to make the grade. The backing vocals, aptly done by the Originals, are magnificent throughout. Jimmy Ruffin (1936-2014) was an American soul singer, and elder brother of David Ruffin of The Temptations. He had several hit records between the 1960s and 1980s, the most successful being the Top 10 hits "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" and "Hold On (To My Love)".

Michelle BUD SHANK Celebrated alto saxophonist and flutist BUD SHANK (1926-2009) rose to prominence in the early 1950s playing lead alto and flute in Stan Kenton’s Innovations in Modern Music Orchestra and throughout the decade worked in various small jazz combos. He spent the 1960s as a first call studio musician in Hollywood. In the 1970s and 1980s he performed regularly with the L. A. Four. Shank ultimately abandoned the flute to focus exclusively on playing jazz on the alto saxophone. He is also well known for the alto flute solo on the song “California Dreamin’” recorded by The Mamas & the Papas in 1965. Michelle is one of the few Shank recorded with the great CHET BAKER, here playing flugelhorn instead of the usual trumpet.

Soulin' LOU RAWLS This Elemental Music release presents Lou Rawls classic album Soulin’. Lou Rawls began his roll onto the R&B and pop charts with this 1966 work. He was now doing soul material, songs where his gospel background and instincts took over, and he simply wailed, soared, and shouted, rather than interpreting or working with blues progressions. He scored a huge hit with “Love Is a Hurtin’ Thing” and had finally found a successful formula. Rawls (1933-2006), also voice actor, songwriter, and record producer, is best known for his singing ability: Frank Sinatra once said that Rawls had “the classiest singing and silkiest chops in the singing game”. Rawls released more than 60 albums, sold more than 40 million records, and had numerous charting singles, most notably his song “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine”. He was a three-time Grammy-winner, all for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

Doing It To Death THE J.B.'s

Label: Elemental Music File Under: Other Genres Catalogue No: 88517 Barcode: 8435395501146 Price: MID PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack

This Elemental Music reissue presents the acclaimed early 1973 LP Doing It to Death by The J.B.’s. The legendary supporting cast of musicians behind JAMES BROWN earned a reputation as the tightest, best-drilled instrumental ensemble of the funk genre. Although the name J.B.’s is most often associated with the three hornmen who led the band (Maceo Parker, Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis, and Fred Wesley), Doing It to Death also featured the original J.B., James Brown himself, who produced the 5-song album, composed and arranged all the tracks, and performed as the lead vocalist. Lodged in a deep groove between the band’s debut LP Food for Thought (1972) and the more complex and at-times political Damn Right, I Am Somebody (from 1974), Doing It to Death is one of the greatest groove jams of all time and marks the return of Maceo Parker to the group. Among the highlights of this essential funk release are the record’s title track, “Doing It to Death” (a long vocal jam that topped the R&B charts in 1973), and the provocative “You Can Have Watergate Just Gimme Some Bucks and I’ll Be Straight” (whose groove is interestingly teased two times before it arrives in full form). This incredible album is a perfect example of how James Brown’s funk machine could stop the world when they hit a groove. Track listing: 1. INTRODUCTION TO THE J.B.’S 0:25 2. DOING IT TO DEATH [Parts 1 & 2] 12:11 3. YOU CAN HAVE WATERGATE JUST GIMME SOME BUCKS AND I’LL BE STRAIGHT 0:15 4. MORE PEAS 13:46 5. LA DI DA LA DI DAY 5:39 6.
