Musique de Nuit BALLAKÉ SISSOKO & VINCENT SEGAL This is a story of friendship and music. In 2009, the kora player Ballaké Sissoko and the cellist Vincent Segal decided to make an album that would capture the musical conversations they had been weaving together over the years. Recorded in Salif Keita’s studio in Bamako, Chamber Music was universally acclaimed and went on to sell 50,000+ copies worldwide. In the UK Ballaké and Vincent appeared live on BBC 2's Culture Show and played at the Barbican, the South Bank, and regional dates, with Ballaké later coming back for a Making Tracks tour and an appearance on Later... with Jools. Six years after Chamber Music, the partnership between the two men has continued to blossom and grow, nourished by their years of pilgrimage together. Now their friendship resonates louder than ever on Musique de Nuit.

Two souls, united by a sense of freedom and momentum, that seem to melt and find echoes of Manding, Baroque, Brazilian and Gypsy in each other. This freedom is the sound of two musicians, who are masters of their own instrument, artistry and tradition, who are able to transcend all that to concentrate on every breath, every sound, their own dialogue, and to put all their attention onto the beauty of the moment. Sheltered from the horrors of modern life, Musique de Nuit celebrates all that is poetry in the world. My Working Class Hero IIRO RANTALA An homage to John Lennon. John Lennon would have been seventy-five on October 9th 2015. On “My Working Class Hero,” the Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala pays tribute to this master of modern song. Throughout the whole album, what may well sound effortless is in fact the result of a long and exacting process by which Rantala - in close discussion with producer Siggi Loch - has worked scrupulously on transforming the original material. The task they have given themselves has been to take world-famous songs, simple works of genius such as “Imagine”, “Woman” or “All You Need Is Love,” and adapt them in a way that something new emerges, while preserving the essence of each composition. In this, Rantala has succeeded in ways that are endlessly surprising.

Sophisticated Abbey Live at the Keystone Korner
ABBEY LINCOLN Few singers have the emotional depth and versatility of Abbey Lincoln. With a voice capable of evoking the joys and pains of life, she has carved a niche as a singer, songwriter, and storyteller for over 40 years. As a singer, she avoided “grandstanding” and rarely, if ever, improvised; she did, however, wring a lyric for its emotional content, while bringing a searing, dramatic quality to the musical line. Early in her career her rich, sustained contralto register - sometimes pierced by sudden impassioned cries - echoed the style of her idol Billie Holiday; in turn it inspired a generation of younger artists such as Cassandra Wilson. The 1970s and 80s found Lincoln recording only sporadically and there is precious little documentation of her art from this period, making these live recordings from 1980 rare treasures indeed. ALL MATERIAL IS ISSUED HERE FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME IN COOPERATION WITH THE ABBEY LINCOLN TRUST

The Real Thing ERIC ALEXANDER More than one jazz critic has claimed that listening to tenor saxman Eric Alexander unfettered and at length, is one of the greatest treats in jazz. This imposing improviser is reunited here with his mentor, the veteran pianist Harold Mabern and joined by another hot favorite, the legendary and amazing guitarist Pat Martino on three of the eight tracks. Add in the still stunning engineering of Rudy Van Gelder and the swing engendered by bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth and you have a formula for excellence, if ever there was one. Martino and Alexander perform together often in a variety of venues and their collaborations have produced some of the most inspired playing on disc.

Crisis AMIR ELSAFFAR Crisis chronicles the continuing development of trumpeter Amir ElSaffar's critically acclaimed Two Rivers Ensemble, a band purpose-built to explore the juncture between jazz and music of the Middle East, in particular the Iraqi maqam. Crisis is ElSaffar’s fifth release on Pi Recordings and the third to feature his Two Rivers Ensemble. The new album is comprised largely of the “Crisis Suite,” which was composed in 2013, after he spent a year living in Egypt, where he witnessed the Arab Spring protests first-hand, and Lebanon, where he worked with Syrian musicians who were living through that country’s harrowing civil war. The suite follows a narrative arc: a commentary on the recent history of Iraq and the Middle East. Often based on the melodic modes of the maqam and folkloric rhythms, the music eschews some of the abstract quality of some of ElSaffar’s prior work and focuses instead on the passionate and ecstatic.

Upriver ARMEL DUPAS A delicate debut album of introspective piano and electronica by a young French pianist, who felt confident enough to take the plunge with his own solo project, as a showcase for his compositional talents and refined touch, after several years in the bands of Sandra Nkaké and Henri Texier. " A composition most often occurs in an unexpected manner. It lies dormant in me and emerges when the emotion is stronger than the decency that keeps it inside. Upriver is like a diary that I have been writing for more than ten years. During this period, I have experienced striking encounters that inspired me for these stories. Each of them left a secret within me that was impossible for me to keep. Like a storyteller, I have transformed these stories into melodies, into sound colors, for it is in the music that resides the most fundamental part of these secrets, the part that I can share and that links the stories to the audience." Like a Great River ODED TZUR In 2012, Oded led a rehearsal in Brooklyn with Shai Maestro, Petros Klampanis and Ziv Ravitz. The immediate connection between the four musicians led to the creation of the Oded Tzur Quartet, an ensemble that explores relationships between the jazz setting and Indian music’s melodic architecture. The Quartet has performed at many venues throughout New York City and in 2014 recorded its debut album: Like a Great River. Oded Tzur is a New York City based saxophonist, composer and bandleader, whose work draws on and explores fundamental connections between different musical traditions. Tzur is also responsible for the development, over a period of ten years, of "Middle Path", a saxophone technique that extends the instrument's microtonal capacity, thus allowing the pursuit of Indian music - a style heavily based on microtonality - on a western instrument.

Love Song THEO BLECKMANN In 2004 Stefan Winter asks Theo Bleckmann to perform at the Opernfestspiele München; this is the beginning of an eclectic ten year musical partnership. A close collaboration with the Japanese composer Fumio Yasuda follows, one result of which is one of the most fascinating orchestral versions of the song "True Love". Bleckmann interprets Uri Caine's arrangement of Gershwin's song "But Not for Me" with a warm and touching voice and also Charles Ives' "In Summer Fields" is one of the greatest discoveries of the singers capabilities. The compilation album "Love Song" - released as the latest instalment of the label's 30th anniversary Jubilee Edition unites the most beautiful love songs of an all-rounder, one who creates a furore as musician, sound artist, performer and composer, a personality who straddles the worlds of jazz, classical music and pop with stylistic confidence.

Verlaine Gisant JOHN GREAVES Born in Wales but since 1984 resident in France, John Greaves retains permanent appeal to generations of avant-rock fans through his association with what became known as the Canterbury scene. From 1969 he was bassist with Henry Cow (with Fred Frith, Tim Hodgkinson and Chris Cutler) and played with Peter Blegvad's Slapp Happy, later joining two further key ensembles, National Health and Soft Heap. His solo career has been long and varied, but over the last several years one constant has emerged - a fascination with Paul Verlaine. Verlaine Gisant is Greaves' third album based on the French poet, this time biographical rather than setting the poems to music. Vocal contributors include Elise Caron, Jeanne Added and Thomas de Pourquery, with a musical backing redolent of his earlier years.
