Border-Free CHUCHO VALDÉS & THE AFRO-CUBAN MESSENGERS Cuba's foremost pianist Chucho Valdés - winner of five Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards - has developed a brand new repertoire. Boasting a new line-up for his band, The Afro-Cuban Messengers, and a guest appearance from saxophonist Branford Marsalis on three tracks, his new album takes us through an eclectic range of pieces. His dazzling virtuosity as a pianist, his prodigious talents as a composer and his ingenious arrangements unite to create a music that enthrals. The eagerly awaited new release is the follow-up to 2010's Chucho's Steps, which won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album and received universally glowing reviews. Alongside new sources of inspiration (the music of the North American Indians and of the Arab-Andalusian culture), the album is infused with the verve of Valdes's early trail-blazing Cuban Jazz ensemble Irakere, his nostalgia for Cuban big bands, the punch of hard bop, the magical rhythms of the Yoruba drums, and of course the spiritual lyricism which is the mark of all great jazz.

The Living Room Sessions Part 2 RAVI SHANKAR In October 2011, at the seasoned age of 91, Ravi Shankar invited his long-time tabla accompanist, Tanmoy Bose, to his home in Encinitas, California for an informal recording session. Over four days, they worked in Shankar's living room, recording seven different ragas. The resulting music is pure Shankar - a pairing of deep musical experience and brilliant technique performed with the energy and passion he brings to his live concerts.

The first four tracks were released in 2011 as The Living Room Sessions Part 1, and subsequently won the Grammy award for Best World Music Album. The Living Room Sessions Part 2 is no less noteworthy and masterly, with three of the last session recordings made by Maestro Ravi Shankar before his death in December 2012. Mishra Kafi introduces the set with a beautiful Alaap and Gat in medium tempo Deepchandi Taal. Sindhi Bhairavi, with its Gat in Dadra and Teen Taal, highlights the in-depth facility with rhythm and improvisational flow which he and Bose have built over their years performing together. And during the Teen Taal of Bhairavi, Shankar's playing is characterized by such intensity, clarity, and delight that it reveals, once more, the Maestro's musical genius as something to reckon with, even in his tenth decade. Thrill Box VINCENT PEIRANI This young French accordionist played alongside Ulf Wakenius (on Vagabond) and Youn Sun Nah (on Lento), and the logical step was to record his debut album for ACT. Peirani belongs to a growing number of outstanding young talents who no longer are merely jazz, classical or rock musicians, but rather universal musicians who use and benefit from the huge spectrum of musical expression that has not yet been discovered. In addition to compositions of his own - the mysteriously whirring “Hypnotic”, the rhythmically playful musette tune for Michel Portal “3 Temps Pour Michel P” and the deeply moving ballad "Air Song" inspired from Indonesia - the album contains a variety of different stylistic identities: North-American traditional music, with the folk songs “Goodnight Irene” and "Shenandoah", dismantled bebop of “I Mean You” form Thelonious Monk, bluesy “Waltz For JB” by Brad Mehldau, the enigmatic, almost South American version of Abbey Lincoln’s “Throw it Away” and wild Balkan sounds on “Balkanski Cocek”. All this is framed by two extraordinary solos, the album opens with Joseph Canteloube’s “Bailero” and closes with Peirani’s own “Choral”.

Peirani keeps excellent company; his trio incudes the dynamic German pianist Michael Wollny and the highly esteemed French bassist Michel Benita, with guest appearances by the veteran Michel Portal and the up and coming saxophonist Emile Parisien.

Gimme The Boots MO' BLOW More and more young German musicians, primarily from jazz backgrounds, are discovering the appeal of heavy grooves, earthy sounds and driving rhythms in funk and soul. Swede Nils Landgren has been the European calling card for funk for 20 years with his Funk Unit, and we can now count representatives of the ACT series "Young German Jazz" among the pioneers of the next generation: The Berlin quartet Mo’ Blow astonished the scene two years ago with their snappy ACT debut "For Those About To Funk".

Label: ACT Music File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: ACT9671-2 Barcode: 614427967121 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Felix F. Falk - saxes, didgeridoo, perc Matti Klein - rhodes Tobias Fleischer - bass André Seidel - drums

And now, "Gimme The Boots" proves all the more that Mo’ Blow really is the successful hybrid of sounds of the seventies with the contemporary. With its own high energy, the very first track "Call Me Milroy" grabs you by the ears and legs, from the slap sounds, cool phrases and reverberating sax played by Mo’ Blow founder Felix Falk to the perfect round-off with a percussive solo by Matti Klein on the Fender Rhodes. The distinctive theme of "Winter Came Early" glides past lightly and easily, while the shouts of "Papa's Pancakes" are nervous and driven. Sonorous soul dominates on "Ray", minimalistic but all the more engendering "good vibrations". Pure funk with the slapped bass of Tobias Fleischer and rapid, sharp syncopations by the entire band bring "Slingshot" to the boil. The mixture is the key. “Master of Funk” Nils Landgren couldn't resist: he produced this second album just as he did the ACT debut. Together it all makes up a dynamic, thrilling, feel-good album. The young German guns – causing an ever-growing international furore.

Jee MOPO Mopo are already a force on Helsinki’s vibrant jazz scene and are making inroads into the international scene. Coming on like a cross between the madcap experimentalism of Matthew Bourne and the ferocious heads down improv of post-free groups like Led Bib, Mopo play punk jazz like they mean it. And in Linda Fredriksson they have a new star in the sax firmament – a slight figure with a big sound; she’ll be making waves for years to come. Founded in a club in Helsinki’s industrial Vallila quarter Mopo are Linda Fredriksson (sax), Eero Tikkanen (double bass) and Eeti Nieminen (drums) – a group of friends who’s close relationships allow the high levels of musical understanding (and the occasional tensions leading to fights “where instruments are frequently being thrown at fellow band members”). Raw energy and excitement marked their early gigs and enabled the band to quickly develop a following.

It seems that there’s always a surprise around the corner with Mopo, and the evolution of musical dynamics is always high on the trio’s agenda. The band themselves offer the best summary of their sound: “Mopo is a combination of humour, speed, melacholy, darkness, pranks and anarchy”.

Tables and Chairs KEVIN FIGES QUARTET Kevin Figes returns with his fourth album as leader, producing a set of strikingly original and forward-looking pieces. Continually developing as a player and composer, this album produces his best work to date and further establishes Figes as a major force on the UK scene. On this album Figes returns to the quartet format with long-standing collaborator and brilliant improviser Jim Blomfield (piano) and, relatively new to the Bristol scene, Will Harris (bass) and Mark Whitlam (drums) who have rapidly become the most in-demand musicians in the South West and beyond. Together with the leader's assured alto and baritone saxophones they bring the compositions to life with empathy and energy, feeding on the experience they have had as a unit over the last two years.

Original ***** DOWN BEAT review: FIRST TIME OUT “This is the surprise of the year. Fischer has had trouble enough establishing himself as a major jazz composer-arranger; but hardly anyone knew that he is also an extraordinary jazz pianist. Peacock is worth an extra full star himself. This LP includes two talents of such magnitude that the album is essential listening for anyone interested in unexploited talents. The producers Mariko Takahashi and Stefan Winter have had for many years the wish to record new and colourful versions of Mother Goose's Melodies. Nursery rhymes for adults. Stefan Winter asked the composer and pianist Fumio Yasuda to adapt and arrange these nursery rhymes for a carefully selected ensemble around the voice of Theo Bleckmann. The primary idea was to create a record with quite different musical influences performed by one group of musicians. »Mother Goose's Melodies« present a total new side of Theo Bleckmann who is able to slip into very different roles. Fumio Yasuda's arrangements and Theo Bleckmann's performance have put new faces on the Mother Goose characters.

Viva V.E.R.D.I. GIOVANNI MIRABASSI TRIO & STRINGS Giovanni Mirabassi, an Italian pianist, but adopted Frenchman, makes his debut on CAM JAZZ. This trio album, accompanied by a string orchestra, was recorded live in the Goyang Aram Concert Hall in Goyang, South Korea, on November 27, 2011. On the bandstand with Mirabassi are Gianluca Renzi on double bass and Lukmil Perez Herrera on drums, backed up by the 31 members of the Bee String Orchestra, directed by Lorenzo Pagliei. The trio and strings create a perfect alchemy for generating themes of intense beauty and airy melodies. The principal creators of these themes are Mirabassi and Renzi, the latter of whom also arranged the entire album, apart from the two last tracks, “Bebè” (by Hermeto Pascoal) and the traditional “Arirang”, a kind of non-official South Korean national anthem. The arrangements of the string orchestra arouse dreams of romantic scenes for cinema, as if studied for imaginary soundtracks.

Most of Giovanni Mirabassi’s career was formed in France (he has been living in Paris for years), but the title “Viva V.E.R.D.I.” was chosen quite intentionally. It is a reference to Italian culture (in which the composer Verdi is an icon) but also to the spirit of unanimity that the acronym “V.E.R.D.I.” (Vittorio Emanuele Re d’Italia) kindled in the Carbonari (members of a secret revolutionary society founded in early 19th-century Italy), who were ready to fight for a unified country. This CD, intense and dreamy, will enrapture you from the first track to the last.

Monk 'n' Roll FRANCESCO BEARZATTI TINISSIMA 4tet Francesco Bearzatti is, without doubt, one of the top musicians of Italian jazz, with certainly the most creative and abundant projects. After tributes to Tina Modotti and Malcolm X, which were widely acclaimed by critics and public alike, in Italy and abroad, he now celebrates the musical genius of Thelonious Monk with a project of pure adrenalin, where all the energy and power of renowned rock pieces (by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, Michael Jackson, Police, Aerosmith...) intersect with those famous themes from the composer who passed away 30 years ago; one of the most extraordinary characters that jazz has ever known. Over recent years, Monk has been the subject of a careful re-evaluation by the critics, while the "new wave" of jazz, based primarily on improvisation, places him ideally as its reference point.

Alongside Francesco Bearzatti, who plays saxophones, clarinet and live electronics on this record, is the highly-proven Tinissima 4et including Giovanni Falzone on trumpet and human effects, Danilo Gallo on double bass and electric bass, and Zeno De Rossi on drums and percussion. "It's a project, a dream - explains Bearzatti – made by four forty-somethings who grew up with rock and roll, but who then became devoted to jazz, to Monk ". And so now they have decided to put them together, merge them, as we often try to do with the things we love‌ to take them always with us.

Stream of Consciousness JIM SNIDERO Playing the saxophone carries with it the heavy load of tradition, and nobody can carry this load with more apparent ease than Jim Snidero. However, there is nothing atavistic about Snidero, who has developed a truly unique voice on his instrument - building on the foundation of the past while pointing the way to the future. With compositions that exploit the full potential of the alto saxophone's expressive range, Snidero has gathered side artists who all seem to be joined at the hip, with each providing sensitive support for the other which seems to shadow or provoke every move. Each album comes in jewel case with original artwork. Each one of these three fanciful musicians has been brilliantly managing his own career, yet, more than 15 years ago, they decided to create a group with a pretty odd idea: the 'vegetal groove' (as heard on Shamanimal) – Didier, of Gong fame, a saxophonist who became a real virtuoso with his double reed instrument, the duduk; Loy, a nomadic keyboard who creates groove with a gnawa bass, the hajouj; and Steve, a percussion and rare instruments (such as the hang) sorcerer. Their discography has already captivated a large public; awarded with a Victoire de la Musique in 2008 (France), these three musicians/magicians keep making us travel again and again…

Shruggy Ji RED BARAAT Formed in 2008, Red Baraat is a pioneering eight-piece band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound -- a merging of hard driving North Indian bhangra rhythms with elements of jazz, go-go, brass funk, and hip-hop. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve. And is being returned to them in cities all over the world, as word spreads of the band’s incredibly powerful live performances. Red Baraat’s sound is infused with a soul and energy that bursts through the seams of its songs. “Halla Bol” is a power-to-the-people anthem sung in Hindi, literally translating to “raise your voice.” “Burning Instinct” plays like a Tarantino car chase. The title track sits as a perfect testament to the album and the band itself. Impossible to define by genre, it’s just an incredible party jam that moves your parts. The band's debut UK tour last year went down a storm and they were handpicked to close the London 2012 Paralympic Games gig in Trafalgar Square.

La Pasionaria VALENTINA MONTOYA MARTINEZ & MR McFALL'S CHAMBER This recording brings together two areas of repertoire which McFall's have often combined in performance – Valentina Montoya Martínez’s own songs and music of the tango nuevo, mostly from Ástor Piazzolla's operita 'María de Buenos Aires'. Valentina's songs tell stories of her life in her native Chile, the high life, low life, girls on the town, girls looking for love... Famously told by the great Nadia Boulanger to return to Argentina and embrace its tango culture, Piazzolla nevertheless learned much from his rigorous counterpoint training as evinced by the instrumental music on this recording, notably Fuga y misterio. La Pasionaria was the nickname of Dolores Ibárruri, an inspirational figure to generations of Latin American women, but it also neatly encapsulates the earthy intensity and sultry sensuality of these performances.
