Held JASON REBELLO British pianist Jason Rebello is regarded as one of the most talented, inventive and intuitive pianists to emerge in the UK since he burst onto the scene in the early 90’s with a string of critically acclaimed albums for the BMG label. Marked with an emotional depth unusual in one so young, these albums elevated Jason to the peak of jazz celebrity at a time when the music was undergoing an unheralded period of popularity. It came as no surprise that Jason caught the attention of Weather Report’s Wayne Shorter and he toured internationally with Shorter's band before replacing another hero, Kenny Kirkland, in Sting’s band. Jason had primarily worked with electronic keyboards in his own groups (as well as with Sting and Jeff Beck); but now he has decided it’s time to say something on the instrument he loves. Held is Rebello's debut solo piano album, featuring mostly original compositions inspired by the people and places that have been important in his career.

Sun Blowing Lars DANIELSSON / Marius NESET / Morten LUND Three musicians, who all make their homes in Copenhagen, met as a Trio for the very first time in a studio. That initial encounter was recorded, and this extremely fine record is the result. The instigator was Danish drummer Morten Lund. The seed was sown in a conversation with Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset and Swedish bassist Lars Danielsson, when all three were travelling back by train to Copenhagen from Jazz Baltica in 2012. That encounter gave Lund the idea that a session like this could work. Danielsson and Lund were already familiar with each other from their work in groups led by Caecilie Norby and Ulf Wakenius. Marius Neset had hardly ever played with either the bassist or the drummer. “The saxophone/ bass /drums trio gives space and freedom”, says Lund. “I felt that the three of us had same passion for trusting the moment.”

The three musicians arrived at the studio on Thursday April 3rd 2014, ready to start work at 2pm, and by the time they emerged some five or six hours later, they knew they had created something very special. They indeed achieved miracles throughout, both in settling into grooves and in giving compelling shape to the freer sections. As Lund recalls the mood at the playback on the next day: “It was like: Wow – did we really do that?!” "(Marius Neset is) one of the hottest European jazz talents of recent years." The Ystad Concert A Tribute to Jan Johansson
JAN LUNDGREN Since 2011, the Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival has been presenting top international stars and outstanding music projects, in a program compiled with unerring good taste by the Artistic Director, pianist Jan Lundgren. On 30 July 2015, he himself took to the festival stage together with bassist Mattias Svensson and the Bonfiglioli Weber String Quartet to pay tribute to one of the founding fathers of Swedish jazz music: pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), a musician noted for his improvisatory workings of folk repertoire into the jazz milieu. With The Ystad Concert, Lundgren once again shows himself to be a worthy successor to Jan Johansson, one who breathes new and unfamiliar life into the folk tradition. His Swedish Standards and European Standards albums were well-received, but the inclusion of a string quartet brings a novel approach.

Almost American Standards KALEVI LOUHIVUORI QUINTET Unbridled and in-the-zone Kalevi Louhivuori. The Finnish trumpeter, already in the spotlight with the outstanding Big Blue quartet, is releasing a new, fanciful and ironic project on CAM JAZZ. The concept here is to flirt with famous American standards, which would, so far, be rather conventional. But Louhivuori’s brainwave is not about reinterpreting them, more or less faithfully, but picking up on each of them to produce fresh compositions. That’s how a “Take 4”, clearly inspired by Paul Desmond’s world-famous “Take 5”, or a “6 Steps To Heaven”, just one step behind Miles Davis’, turned up on this CD.
Label: CAM Jazz File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: CAMJ7900-2 Barcode: 8052405142023 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Kalevi Louhivuori trumpet Ville Vannemaa sax Mikael Myrskog piano Eero Seppä bass Jaska Lukkarinen - drums
The eight tracks featuring “Almost American Standards” were recorded with the valuable contribution of an all-Finnish combo: Ville Vannemaa on sax, Mikael Myrskog on piano, Eero Seppä on double bass and Jaska Lukkarinen on drums. Fifty minutes of excellent music, in which the pleasure of listening is combined with that of searching for charm, reference and the refined art of flirting with sources and heading towards fresh, amazing sonic destinations. It’s up to the listener to find out which muse is behind each piece and try to trace the original, detecting similarities with and differences in Louhivuori’s writing. Track listing: 1. For Mr. Evans 2. Crise 3. Praise 4. Yes And Now 5. Take 4 6. 6 Steps To Heaven 7. Blues For Joshua 8. Alone Again

Stranger Days ADAM O'FARRILL The Brooklyn born and raised O'Farrill comes from a celebrated musical lineage: his grandfather, the Cuban composer/arranger Chico O'Farrill; his father, pianist and composer Arturo O'Farrill; and his mother Alison Deane, a classical pianist. Though he has only been at it for a short time, Adam O'Farrill has displayed maturity in his music beyond his 21 years. The young trumpeter/composer was introduced to the music world early on and quickly ascertained the importance of history, hard work and collaboration to realize his voice as an artist. On his debut recording as a leader, Stranger Days, O'Farrill introduces his fantastic and highly interactive quartet of the same name, showcasing distinctive and subtly programmatic original pieces. Stranger Days (the band, and album, name) was originally assembled in February 2014. O'Farrill naturally chose his co-conspirator and brother for the drum chair plus two of his longtime musical friends, tenor saxophonist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown and bassist Walter Stinson. Together, they have created a quiet, intense, at times humorous, and at all times entertaining debut album.
