Peter and the Wolf and Jazz! DAVID TENNANT / THE AMAZING KEYSTONE BIG BAND Narrator David Tennant invites you to share in a strange adventure: a jazz big band adaptation of Prokofiev’s famous tale. Jazz instruments take the place of the classical orchestra in this innovative and irresistible adaption as The Amazing Keystone Big Band introduce listeners to the sound of the big band and to the history of jazz. The booklet relates the story in a series of magnificently realised illustrations (by Martin Jarrie). David Tennant is the Scottish actor known for his roles as the tenth Doctor in the British television series 'Doctor Who', Alec Hardy in 'Broadchurch', Giacomo Casanova in the eponymous TV serial and Barty Crouch, Jr. in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. In addition to his appearances on screen, Tennant has worked as a voice actor, most recently for cult TV series 'W1A' and appeared as a critically acclaimed 'Hamlet' for the RSC. In January 2015, Tennant received the National Television Award for Special Recognition.

Extra-Deluxe-Supreme HAZMAT MODINE Rattling with the sounds of migration from the cauldron of New York City, Hazmat Modine returns rejuvenated with a new album, serving up the bones of American music on a platter of silver, brass, reeds, electric guitars, violin, and vocal harmonies, and as always, presided over by the dashing harmonica wizard Wade Schuman. Musically, the inspiration is drawn from Memphis and rock steady, garnished with the sounds of Egyptian Afro-pop, American roots and Tuvan soul. Set to simmer, it's blended and distilled into a distinctive Hazmatian stew. The emphasis is on tight vocal harmonies that ring with gospel overtones. The arrangements are crisp and elaborate in a style that can only be referred to as Baroque Blues. The Tuvan throat singing group Alash guest on two tracks. The String Project Live in Brussels
PHILIP CATHERINE Ever since the 1970's, Philip Catherine has had a decisive influence on the sound of the guitar in jazz. This period – four decades – has also been the time during which the guitarist has worked together with Siggi Loch, which made his the appearance of first CD on ACT feel like such a natural step. That album “New Folks,” a duo album with the bassist Martin Wind, is now followed by “The String Project - Live in Brussels”. Philip Catherine is one of the finest exponents of the melodic way of playing the guitar. Having been schooled in the music of Django Reinhardt, Catherine took his playing to another level in his duo with guitarist Larry Corryell, and several albums which he made with Chet Baker constitute a major recorded legacy.

Philip Catherine has been able to fulfil a long-held wish to have his music performed with a large orchestra, the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, conducted by Frank Braley. Thank You Baby! TORSTEN GOODS Spirituals, blues and roots music form the creative foundation for “Thank You Baby!, music that the 34 year old German/Irish guitarist/singer grew up with. If special guests and horn arrangements were a distinctive feature of Goods' previous release “Love Comes To Town“, here a compact 4-piece line-up makes a more powerful statement; the musicians that form Goods' "dream band" include drummer/producer Wolfgang Haffner, Roberto Di Gioia on Fender Rhodes and piano, and American blues/jazz drummer Timothy Lefebvre. The idea for the recording was to make the music sound pure and just like a live studio perfomance, without any overdubs, exactly as they would have done it in the sixties. “Thank You Baby!“ convinces on that score across the board: whether it be the irresistibly rolling “Work Song“ by Nat Adderly; Ray Charles' “Hallelujah I Love Her So“, steeped in sixties charm; the reharmonized, deeply melancholic and reduced-to-its-essence “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?“ by Lead Belly; the fully improvised standard “Afro Blue“, composed by Mongo Santamaria; or the killer swing of “How Sweet It Is“, the Motown classic made famous by Marvin Gaye. This song and its lyrics were the inspiration for the album title.

Treehouse TOM HEWSON TRIO John Taylor labeled his playing style as “ravishing and daring” and described him as a “sublime composer” - the recipient of such compliments is Tom Hewson, a young English pianist, who here offers his debut album on the Italian label. “Treehouse” boasts a unique and exceptional ensemble, featuring Lewis Wright (from Empirical) on vibraphone and jazz man about town Calum Gourlay on double bass. The album is the kind of modern jazz that is able to reach everybody yet has assimilated many other languages. Bill Evans, Monk and John Taylor himself are all mentioned by Hewson as his musical influences, but the vibraphone also recalls Frank Zappa’s compositions, more so than such virtuosi as Milt Jackson or Lionel Hampton.

Treehouse consists of enlightened, fully-fledged, suggestive, well-structured pieces. From the opening track, “Sparticle”, to the closer, “Beanie’s Bounce”, a wide range of moods is delivered, with stunning solos flowing in the moment and excellent interplay. Hewson has the leading role, having written most of the songs here. Wright’s contribution includes “Lifting”, a less-than-a-minute, improvised nugget, and splendid “Silver Strands”, while Gourlay composed “Lingering”, a short, solo experiment for double bass. Marvin Sewell contributes his ethereal guitar playing to a moving interpretation of the folk song “Wildwood Flower” made famous by the Carter Family and dedicated here to the memory of Matt Wilson’s wife, Felicia. They hit off, so when date threw them together at a session near to Monaco's pad, they recorded, old-style, straight off the bat, this tribute to the classic Blue Note organ trios of the 60s. These true musos inject effortlessly this 50 year old sound into their own compositions, adding a few specially arranged jazz standards along the way such as the legendary 1958 Miles Davis classic version of "On Green Dolphin Street" which Smith’s zestful drumming gives a distinct Latin feeling; Ray Nobles "Cherokee" is gently modernised with a funky groove; Nat King Cole’s immortal "It's Only A Paper Moon" from the Broadway musical "The Great Magoo" retains a timeless swing but with a walking pedal bass from the Hammond organ; they wind down with a gentle version of "That's All", an unforgettable ballad from the Great American Songbook.

Number Five LP TOM HARRELL VINYL LP VERSION Tom Harrell is one of the world's most respected jazz trumpeters and composers. His original works achieve that rare balance between intricacy and musicality, being at once intellectually engaging and emotionally satisfying. Tom's trumpet and flugelhorn playing could be called an art that conceals art; marked with a shrewd lyricism and sensitive tone that argues against technique for technique's sake, high note grandstanding or oblique reference. In realizing this musical vision, Harrell has surrounded himself with like minded players and it is this, his 'working band,' that has appeared unchanged on all five of his HighNote recordings. The result is a comfort level that approaches musical symbiosis which is rare in jazz today and a recording which is much more than another entry in an already impressive discography, but an event.

Chicago Fire LP ERIC ALEXANDER VINYL LP VERSION There's an old saying that a great jazz musician never plays a song the same way once. That could certainly be said of Eric Alexander. One of the busiest players in jazz yet his playing is as imaginative as ever, with the ideas pouring out of his horn. His harmonic inventiveness is exceptional and he'll run the changes at such length at times that you wonder if he'll resolve everything in time and end up back on the beat – but he always does. He has a big, full, sound, and a ferocious technique, with access to the full range of his instrument, all under super-human control. Both the Bird and the Sonny Rollins legacies have been thoroughly internalized but here Eric explores the repertoire of another school of tenor playing – the Chicagoans. With long-time collaborators Harold Mabern, John Webber and Joe Farnsworth Eric gives the nod to some Windy City players who helped shape the sound of jazz for decades Eddie Harris, Von Freeman and others.

Amzer ALAN STIVELL Before being met by a few fellow musical travellers like himself, it was alone, in his home studio that Alan Stivell crafted this beautiful tribute to time, inspired by the change of seasons and poetry. The deep solace that transpires is supported by a "sound design" where vocals, flutes, and percussion build the mould for some contemplative music, a kind of avant-folk with an innovative electronic take. Immemorial past and modernity come together in this passing of time - an "amzer", (to use the Breton phrase which evokes the passage of time). Alan Stivell is first and foremost an original. Not content with reviving a forgotten instrument in his earliest youth, he gradually brought in its electric version. Not content with fusing rock music with the music of his roots, he went beyond this partnership to draw on all the influences available; eclecticism taken to its logical conclusion. Certainly Alan Stivell is the high priest of Celtic music.

Magma Live 2LP MAGMA 180g DOUBLE VINYL WITH DOWNLOAD CODE Magma Live, recorded at the Taverne de l'Olympia, Paris, in June 1975, was the band's first live album (and fifth album release in total) and has since been acknowledged as one of their seminal releases.

After the departure in autumn of 1974 of Jannick TOP and most of the other members of the band, MAGMA rose phoenix-like from the ashes with a new, hot, line-up which saw the musical opportunity lying before it. After long rehearsals Christian VANDER realised that he had yet another exceptional group and the decision was taken to record the first MAGMA live album. The recording perfectly demonstrates the incredible impact made by MAGMA. Absolutely dedicated to the music of Christian VANDER, who by that time had reached the summit of his art, the band plays as if it were one man and sweeps all before it in its triumphant passage. Whether it was a new arrangement of any of the old pieces (KOHNTARK, KOBAIA, MEKANIK) or a previously-unheard piece (HHAI, LIHNS), the sound of MAGMA has never been heard more powerfully as on this incredible recording. Although it remains difficult to point to any one performance as being outstanding, it would nevertheless be difficult not to react to the mind-blowing performance by Didier Lockwood, whose violin playing contributes so greatly to the profound originality of this magnificent double-album. Track listing: Side A 1. Köhntark (Part 1) 15:44 Side B 1. Köhntark (Part 2) 16:16 Side C 1. Kobah 6:23 2. Lïhns 5:51 3. Hhaï 8:41 Side D 1. Mëkanïk Zaïn 19:17
