In His Good Time Chris McGregor Ogun is extremely proud to present, for the first time on CD, this solo outing by the renowned South African band leader and composer Chris McGregor, recorded live in his adopted homeland of France in 1977. Best known as a member of the Blue Notes and leader of the international big band the Brotherhood of Breath, McGregor rarely recorded solo; his two recitals for the French Musica label have long since disappeared, and “In His Good Time has been unavailable for many years. This long-awaited reissue comes directly from the original unedited analogue tapes and boasts a wealth of bonus material, restoring in its entirety the first set of the evening, a continuous performance of original works and arrangements of traditional South African folksongs. Five tracks edited from the second set complete the collection. CONTAINS 5 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS

Wonderful! Wonderful! Joey DeFrancesco Joey DeFrancesco has come a long way from All of Me, his recording debut as a leader made in 1989 as a fresh-faced 17-year-old. From the get-go, the Philadelphia native established his credentials with virtuoso technique and an innate soulfulness that he brought to bear on the Hammond B-3 organ. Throughout his early career, Joey was widely recognized as spearheading a renewed interested in the Hammond organ, and building a bridge from the instrument's golden period of the 1960s and early 70s to the modern vocabulary and usage that it enjoys today. With jazz guitar great Larry Coryell and legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb, Joey imbues the venerable genre with new life, vigor and a modern sensibility which is at once of the moment and, at the same time, respectful of its roots and soulful history.

The Queen of the Party The Uptown Blues of Irene Reid

Irene Reid From her days singing with the Count Basie band as a replacement for Joe Williams, to her Indian summer of renewed popularity, Irene Reid always lived up to her moniker, The Queen of Uptown Blues. Like Dinah Washington and Esther Phillips, Irene had a church background and never lost that divine intensity or power to convey the emotions in a lyric. Moving to New York from her native Savannah in 1947, Irene tried out for the Apollo Theater's Amateur Contest and ended up winning it five consecutive times. With Basie in the early '60s, Irene toured Sweden, Switzerland, France and Australia and recorded some albums with her own group, Irene Reid and Company. She went on to record two big-band albums for Verve but her most visible appearance in those post-Basie years was in the cast of the Broadway show, “The Wiz,” as the wicked witch Evillene, the role originated by Mabel King.

She recorded a number of albums for Savant before her passing in 2008, with each release winning her a legion of new fans. Here is a program featuring Irene, the Mighty Burner, Eric Alexander and the rest of the crew doing what Irene did best the Uptown Blues. With her all-star Band, Irene's wit, sassy delivery and love of life is evident in every track. Owls Talk Alexandra Grimal / Lee Konitz / Gary Peacock / Paul Motian A superb encounter for the young French saxophonist, leading this date with three venerable masters of the genre. The album was recorded in New York in 2009 and originally released in France on Marge but now sees a proper international release. Grimal, playing more accessibly (though hardly mainstream) than on her other recordings, composed or co-composed nine of the 15 tracks and the excellent sound provides a rewarding listening experience. "An incredible encounter. A moment suspended in time. I don't have the words to describe what happened on those cold days in December 2009. Singular emotions, beyond anything language can express. A waking dream‌ or the awakening of a dream?" Alexandra Grimal

Dell Westergaard Lillinger feat. John Tchicai John Tchicai John Tchicai, the Afro-Danish saxophonist who was born in 1936, is one of the few remaing active players whose roots lie in the New Wave of Jazz in the sixties. He formed the New York Art Quartet, and later the New York Contemporary Five with Archie Shepp and Don Cherry, and recorded with Coltrane, Ayler and many more. Tchicai met vibes player Christopher Dell in Berlin in 2010, as part of a memorial concert to Johnny Dyani with whom he had played in the Brotherhood of Breath. Three tracks (30 mins) of the material presented on this album is from that duo concert. The other nine tracks (42 mins) were recorded three days later in a Berlin studio with a young rhythm section. The inter-generational project works supremely well, with genuine empathy between the musicians who emerge as a collective rather than Old Master and backing band. Tchicai's playing is restrained and lyrical, the mood one of serenity and probing thoughtfulness.

Day and Night Gerd Dudek Gerd Dudek came to London early in 2012 to give a concert at the Vortex. The next day the quartet went to Curtis Schwartz’s studio deep in the English countryside to record. Gerd and Hans Koller between them chose a programme of some of their favourite jazz tunes. Dudek is a German saxophonist who played in the early line-up of the Globe Unity Orchestra, and later with Alex Von Schlippenbach, Manfred Schoof, Albert Mangelsdorff and many others. His origins are in free jazz but his playing has adopted a somewhat gentler tone in recent years. Although recordings have been infrequent Dudek remains one of Germany's best jazz musicians.

Jazz at Storyville + Konitz Lee Konitz 2 LPS ON 1 CD ! Lee Konitz’s complete original LPs Jazz at Storyville (Storyville LP901) and Konitz (Storyville LP313). The first is a live performance recorded at the Storyville Club in Boston (presented by local radio MC John McLelland), while the second is a studio album. Both LPs present Konitz in a quartet setting with pianist Ronnie Ball. Includes 12-page booklet. ALL MUSIC GUIDE (Printed edition, 2002): Jazz at Storyville “This excellent album gives one a definitive look at altoist Lee Konitz at a period of time when he was breaking away from being a sideman and a student of Lennie Tristano, and asserting himself as a leader. With pianist Ronnie Ball, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Alan Levitt, Konitz explores a variety of his favorite chord changes, some of which were disguised by newer melodies such as ‘Hi Beck’, ‘Subconscious Lee’ and ‘Sound Lee’. Among the other highpoints of this well-recorded set are ‘Foolin’ Myself’ and a lengthy exploration of ‘If I Had You’.” (Scott Yanow)

George Gershwin composed Porgy & Bess ten years after his success with Rhapsody in Blue. By this time he was already a major figure in American music. Originally conceived by Gershwin as an "American folk opera," Porgy & Bess premiered in New York in the fall of 1935 and featured an entire cast of classically trained African-American singers. It also received ample play by jazz artists, who made countless versions (both vocal and instrumental) of numerous selections from the opera (including those by the Modern Jazz Quartet, Miles Davis with the Gil Evans Orchestra, and the Oscar Peterson trio; “I Loves You Porgy” became one of Billie Holiday’s greatest hits). The most celebrated jazz version of Porgy & Bess, however, is the 1957 recordings by Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald reissued here, which contain the most famous version ever recorded of the perennial “Summertime”. Although both Ella and Louis continued their respective careers with great success after 1957, Porgy & Bess would be their last recorded collaboration ever.

Africa / Brass LP + 1 bonus track

John Coltrane Quartet This was Trane’s first album with a big band. The unique instrumentation included four French Horns, tuba, two euphoniums, two trumpets, three reed players, and a rhythm section including two bassists. The tight arrangements were primarily penned by Trane and McCoy Tyner, and orchestrated by Eric Dolphy. It must be admitted, however, that even though Down Beat published an unenthusiastic review, the original liner notes for Africa/Brass were written by another Down Beat collaborator, Don Cerulli, who praised the work.

Africa/Brass marks the first collaboration between Coltrane and Eric Dolphy, who on this album played reeds (but didn’t solo), wrote all of the orchestrations and conducted the ensemble. The sessions took place on May 23 and June 7 of 1961. Sandwiched between both sessions, Trane and Dolphy recorded the septet album Olé (on May 25, 1961), again with two bassists (Reggie Workman and Art Davis), and also adding Freddie Hubbard on trumpet to McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones. The album featured jazz luminaries Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Roy Haynes, and contained the tune “Stolen Moments,” now considered a standard. Very Tall features Jackson as an added member of the legendary Peterson Trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen. After Very Tall, Peterson and Jackson wouldn’t record together again for ten years. They rejoined forces in Villingen, Germany in July 1971, where they made another quartet album, titled Reunion Blues. The album featured the rhythm section of the Oscar Peterson Trio of that period, which included Ray Brown again on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The pianist and vibraphonist would continue to play together, mostly in live settings, and various albums appeared taken from such performances. Their final collaboration dates back to a November 1998 quartet performance, with Ray Brown on bass, and Karriem Riggins on drums, taped at the Blue Note in New York. Milt Jackson died shortly after on October 9, 1999 at the age of 76. Musically active until the end, Peterson would pass away on December 23, 2007, at the age of 82. Tanguísimo Astor Piazzolla 8 CD box set with bonus 9th CD. Originally conceived as a Complete Works of the the Argentinian maestro, this set through force of circumstance became an anthology deprived of the 'Complete' tag. The booklet reflects on the inaccessibility of various works, but rather than dwell on what is missing, the set focuses the attention on the period 1945-1961 and includes a whopping 213 tracks, presented in chronological order. The Bonus CD features the American recording sessions of 1958-59 wherein Piazzolla orchestrated and arranged works far removed from his beloved tango.

From the sleevenotes: A prolific period, during which Astor Piazzolla carved out his own musical aesthetic, as personal as it is universal, and raised Tango to the ranks of classical music without causing it to lose any of its force, its character, its originality or its roots. The clear break he brought about by shaking up the musical codes of Tango felt like sacrilege to the older generation, but like a much-needed revolution to those who dreamed of modernity. The second real icon in the history of Argentinian music alongside Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla, like his illustrious forefather, left his imprint on this style of music in spite of its rules, which were anchored in a set of seemingly immutable traditions. "Astor Piazzolla turned Tango into more than just the music of one nation and one people; he made it into a universal art on a par with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Claude Debussy. Like Orpheus descending into the underworld to seek Eurydice, Piazzolla tracked Tango down to the hidden places where the Guardia Vieja were keeping it a jealously guarded secret, and brought it up into the daylight so he could share it with the world…. Except that he never turned around, so his Eurydice is still alive and well!" Juan Esteban Alvarez de Molina

Corazon De Piel Afuera - Godino Cuarteto Cedron The Paris-based Argentinian tangeros release an album of two halves, or two new albums on one disc: "Corazon..." and "Godino"

Label: Le Chant du Monde File Under: World music Catalogue No: 2742182 Barcode: 3149024218224 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack World Music: ARGENTINA Juan Cedrón, guitar & voice Román Cedrón, bass Miguel López, bandoneon Miguel Praino, viola

"In this album – the part devoted to Miguel Angel Bustos – you will come across some poems where the blend of tenderness, innocence, the unfathomable beauty of a small child, the never-ending sadness of an orphan, cold solitude and at the same time, intense love, warm and soft like the sun will leave you breathless. The embalmed young lady ('La Señorita Muerta') who manages to become a pure beauty and seduces whoever turns up; a lullaby for a serial killer who in turn is also killed himself ('Canción de cuna para Godino') ; the many facets of the utopian city of San Jamás; the wounds, moments of sweetness and illusions of love – is this reality or fiction? The incredible portraits of the prodigious flautist ('Ah la Flauta') and the poet of multiple faces ('el Irlandés'), all generous or coarse, to avoid over-simplification, a religion not professed within the Cuarteto. What year does the action take place in when Juan Cedrón sings a huella ('Colombianas del Ecuador') that sounds like it did a hundred years ago? The only thing we have that has no limits is our imagination. And other stories: the ones from memory and the soliloquies, inevitably every bit as creative! All these stories becoming one with the voice inventing them or recounting them from memory. Juan Cedrón's ample, swelling tone is that of the Cuarteto too, a voice that is both melody and stage for a one-act show, impossible to repeat, yet multiple, where the actor makes us believe he's a real man…or a man who's laughing or suffering his own song and he has us believe he's nothing but a simple actor, whereas the only real thing is his voice, authentic in its pure illusion and the way it feels at the hypnotic moment of the tale." Diaspora in Buenos Aires The Linetzky Family Andrés Linetzky’s grandfather José was born in 1916 in Belz, in the heart of Europe. At the time, 6,000 people still lived there, 3,600 of them Jews. Jewish culture is at home in the town. The Linetzkys live in the ‘Street of musicians’. They are ‘Klezmers’, as musicians who play ‘yiddish’ music are referred to, and they own a bookshop. In 1929 – José is eight years old – the Linetzkys emigrate to Buenos Aires, escaping extermination. Among the few things they carry in their luggage, there is José’s mother’s mandolin. Almost a hundred years later, her instrument can be heard on this album. The young Linetzky generation plays ‘Beltz mas Sher’, a tribute to Belz. In their new South American environment, the Linetzkys meet regularly to play music at home. Klezmer is played, cultivated and transmitted from the great-grandfather to the grandfather, from the grandfather to the father, the son and the grandson. Diaspora in Buenos Aires. The tradition lives on!

Soul of the Ultimate Nation Collector's Edition Vol.2

Howard Shore Howard Shore began writing the score for the massive multiplayer online role-paying game, Soul of the Ultimate Nation (SUN) in the summer of 2004. In November of that year, Shore was in Moscow conducting The Lord of the Rings Symphony at the Kremlin with the National Philharmonic of Russia and Victor Popov’s Academy of Choral Arts. Following the Moscow concerts he traveled with the orchestra and chorus for another three concerts in Tokyo. “I was still composing the music for SUN at this time and while in Japan I decided I wanted to write the piece specifically for this orchestra and chorus,” said Shore. “I wanted the chorus to sing in ancient Korean as a way to express the world of SUN. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to bring together the western and eastern concepts at play. The pieces were composed as tone poems to express the different characters, cultures and the world of this wonderfully detailed game.”
