Tigres en Fuga CUMBIA ALL STARS Few musical styles have been as unanimously popular in Peru as Cumbia (also known as Chicha). Planting its roots in the suburbs of Lima among the children of immigrants and in remote cities of the Amazonian jungle, its mesmerizing melodies have resonated in the Peruvian air for more than forty years. Cumbia All Stars, made up of former members of bands such as Los Mirlos, Los Diablos Rojos, Los Girasoles, Los Beta 5, Los Riberenos and Los Destellos, is a tribute to the spectacle of Peruvian Cumbia. With their bold, resonant guitar lines and jerky beats, the Cumbia All Stars majestically reinvigorate golden oldies whilst innovating new melodies that remain loyal to the origins of the music. The veteran singers and players are living legends of the music – originators from the dawn of Cumbia who nursed the flame for over four decades and now have joined together with their new album Tigres en Fuga, to rapturously re-stoke the fires of the phenomenon that is Cumbia Peruana.

Memoirs of an Arabian Princess - Sounds of Zanzibar VARIOUS ARTISTS The latest release in Winter & Winter's AudioFilm collection (a.k.a. Sound stories) is the true tale of one Emily Ruete born as Sayyida Salme, Princess of Zanzibar and Oman - who was banished from her homeland by her brother the Sultan because of her forbidden romance with a German trader. Ruete's actual Memoirs were first published in 1886. According to local legend Taarab music was created by the Sultan, and the music is what Emily reminisces about as she sails away from Zanzibar. To recreate this sorry tale musically, the label has co-opted some of the finest talents in contemporary Taarab. Rajab Suleiman is a mainstay of the leading Zanzibari orchestra, the Culture Music Club, and performs here on five of the nine tracks with his new smaller ensemble Kithara. Kithara are the latest artists to feature in the acclaimed Zanzibara album series, as have the Mtendeni Maulid Ensemble, also included here. Label owner Stefan Winter provides the evocative soundscapes, as recorded in situ on Zanzibar.

Live a L'Olympia CESARIA EVORA One of only a small handful of bona fide world music superstars, Cesaria Evora achieved particularly astonishing success in France, where she was awarded the Légion d'Honneur (France's highest civilian honour) in 2009. In 1993, following the huge success of her Miss Perfumado album the year before, Evora played two nights at the prestigious Olympia in Paris and was rapturously received by a devoted audience. The live recording from these nights was released a few years later on the Mélodie label and now gets a welcome re-release at mid-price. Cesaria Evora started her singing careeer in her teens, appearing in bistros around her hometown of Mindelo, on the island of Cape Verde. After going through a long, dry spell during the 1970s and early 1980s, the songtress finally found considerable success after landing a record deal in Europe. The artist was 47 when she released her first album - La diva aux pieds nus, in 1988. In the following years, Evora released a series of recordings which made her an international star. A dedicated cultural ambassador, the Barefoot Diva helped popularize morna and coladera, two musical genres typical of her native country. The songstress passed away in 2011.

Democrazy NMB AFROBEAT EXPERIENCE From what was originally a moniker given to the unique style of music of just one artist, Afrobeat has evolved and expanded around the world into a genre of its own, with its practitioners keeping the flame alive whilst adapting, fertilising and renewing it. Fela Kuti's bandleader sons rightfully lead the way, but the UK and USA have their share of Afrobeat bands and the vibe is spreading globally. There is plenty of room for another Afrobeat concoction, especially one as good as this French outfit, the NMB Afrobeat Experience (a.k.a. NMB Brass Band). Featuring African and European guests met on the roads of both continents (Kady Diarra, Hawa, Sir Jean), NMB Brass Band has carved "Democrazy" on the fiery road from Fela's home of Lagos, Nigeria, to Bobo Dioulasso, broiling under the blazing sun of Burkina Faso. This album invites the Nigerian Yoruba highlifers to the Mandingue griot's feast - a glowing reunion between to West African worlds - all at the behest of the New Orleans-style French funksters. An Afrobeat well worth Experiencing.

El Bardo ALDO DEL RIO It was on a tour to Aldo del Rio’s native Pinar del Río province where Sunnyside heard the master tresero for the first time. Del Rio impressed with his amazing style on the tres cubano, a six-string guitar like instrument allegedly of Spanish origins that was developed in Eastern Cuba to perform the Afro-Cuban music from the region. The instrument has three sets of two strings, which provide a unique harp like sound due to the sympathetic strings. The recording of Del Rio’s small conjunto ensemble was made at the famed Estudios Abdala in the Miramar section of Havana in 2000, but this tremendous document has been waiting for release until now. The twelve tracks presented on El Bardo are a collection of songs made popular in Cuba over the past 80 years. The album gives listeners a rare chance to hear a true master of Afro-Cuban music in the perfect environment – at home.

BRAZIL! The Birth of Bossa Nova
VARIOUS ARTISTS Bossa Nova originated in Samba. It really came into existence during the second half of the fifties. The artists behind this new genre were Tom Jobim, Carlos Lyra, and especially Joao Gilberto (to which list, by rights, should also be added the poet VinĂcius de Moraes). Their compositions, the fruit of a group of musicians sharing their ideas, had an innovatively casual feel, and used new harmonies with jazzy or European influences. All these young artists, who were mainly active at night, led a bohemian existence and were driven by the same unshakeable confidence in Brazil’s future, and their hope that democracy and the economy would progress. They expressed this newly light-hearted atmosphere through recurrent themes like the sea, the waves, the beach, the sky, women and love.

This handsomely presented collection combines 56 tracks by the above artists along with a host of their contemporaries, including the jazz artists - Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Laurindo Almeida etc - who created a second wave of Bossa popularity, helping to turn it into a worldwide phenomenon.

PORTUGAL! Amalia Rodrigues & The Legends of Fado
VARIOUS ARTISTS As the beat pulsing behind the mists of time, lost love, the human condition and nostalgia for the dead, Fado still fascinates us. The word means ‘fate’ and for the Portuguese, Fado is a song from out on the seas, swollen with memories and the nostalgia of mariners who were tossed from one side of the Atlantic to the other. This form of music, with its hints of ardent sentimentality, passionate love, murderous jealousy and wounds to the heart made a permanent name for itself in casas de fado. From these genuine temples of the genre came most of the great names of contemporary Fado, such as António Menano, Joaqim Pimentel, José Porfirio. Maria do Carmo, Alfredo Rodrigo Duarte, Edmundo de Bettencourt, Alfredo Duarte and Maria Silva. At the end of the war, a new, largely feminine, generation of Fado singers was born, of which the undisputed queen was Amalia Rodrigues. This compilation contains 24 tracks by Amalia Rodrigues on CD1 and 27 tracks by other luminaries of the genre on CD2.

ESPANA! Grandes Personajes del Flamenco
VARIOUS ARTISTS A dance, a way of singing and of playing the guitar: Flamenco is all this, even if originally, it was a secular, popular type of song which was rough, plaintive, wild, exalted, powerful, barren and incantatory. Its origins can no doubt be traced back to Antiquity.
Label: Le Chant du Monde File Under: World music / Spain Catalogue No: 2742351/52 Barcode: 3149024235122 Price: MID PRICE Format: 2 CD Packaging: clamshell box
Song is the main mode of expression for Flamenco and its ritual never changes. Over the years, some great male and female vocalists have left their mark on history: Carmen Amaya (who was both a singer and a dancer), La Perla de Cádiz, Tia Anica La Piriñaca, La Paquera de Jerez, La Nina de los Peines, Porrina de Badajoz, Canalejas de Jerez, José Menese, Curro de Utrera, Camarón de la Isla, Juan Talega, Beni de Cádiz, Manuel El Agujeta, Terremoto de Jerez, Manuel Soto El Sordera, Pepe Marchena, El Niño del Almadén and Rafael Farina are among the most remarkable figureheads of Flamenco. Guitar music shines just as bright in the hands of Paco Aguillera, Pedro Bacan, Paco Cepero, Roman El Granaino, Pepe Habichuela, Paco de Lucia, Melchor de Marchena, Carlos Montoya, Nino de Ricardo and Sabicas. This attractively-packaged compilation contains 51 tracks by all these and more.

ARGENTINA! Tango Legends from Gardel to Piazzolla
VARIOUS ARTISTS Like the moan of a soul in pain, a melancholy lamentation, but also an early attempt to introduce a form of equality between the sexes which can be seen – and experienced – in their parallel steps, Tango has its roots in a mysterious past. In its passion, which has taken hold of millions of men and women throughout the world since it came into being – of course, nobody knows when – it encapsulates the entire history of Argentina, of its underworld, which is acted out over and over again every time the bandoneon starts up. The Tango has thus become the business of both male and female singers. Its language borrows widely from lunfardo and favours colourful characters “Tango is a sad thought you can dance to,” as the poet Enrique Santos Discépolo once said. This compilation contains 53 tracks of classic tangos from 1927-1963.

Kalo Yeele KALO YEELE « Kalo Yeele -The Light of the Moon » takes the form of a spontaneous dialogue between musicians from different backgrounds and cultures. The compositions are lively, with strong sensory appeal. The acoustic timbres of the stringed instruments, guitar, kamele ngoni and violin, together with the voices of Nawassa Soumano and Demba Ndiaye Ndillaan, give the music its authenticity. This album shows up the links between traditional West African music and blues, folk and jazz.

Tesoros Humanos LUIS DE LA CARRASCA My aim, when I left my native Andalusia, was to share with others the riches of flamenco. This recording is part of that. Through many rich encounters I have been able to choose my own path, get to know other cultures and constantly develop my art. Poetry and music are my vehicles for expressing my own experiences and those of others, in the hope that listeners will be able to feel and identify with them. The work presented here combines flamenco with music from other cultures, and world music. It pays tribute to the music that has influenced flamenco: Andalusian classical music, Celtic, African, Indian, Gypsy, and so on. We are therefore joined by recognised artists, such as Juan Antonio Suarez ‘Cano’, guitar, Fouad Didi, violin and vocals (Andalusian classical music), Nabankur Bhattachary, Indian tabla, Philippe Gauby, sitar, Djeli Moussa Condé, African kora, and Edouard Coquard, drums.

Andrew McCormack is a composer and pianist at the pinnacle of his creative powers. Born in 1978 in the UK and now residing in New York, McCormack has built a formidable reputation as one of Britain's hottest pianists and a composer of undeniable skill and talent. In 2007 McCormack burst onto the scene with his debut album, Telescope, a masterful recording that fused the pianist's inimitable free flowing melodic lines with his powerful rhythmic pulse to memorable effect. Since then, McCormack has toured the globe as a bandleader with his trio and in duo with saxophonist Jason Yarde, with whom he has released the acclaimed albums, MY Duo in 2010 and Places and Other Spaces in 2011. As a sideman, McCormack has been the driving force behind A-list jazzers Kyle Eastwood, Eric Alexander, Denys Baptiste and Jean Toussaint, as well as a host of home grown talent. Developing and honing a skilfully original approach to writing and performance in the jazz tradition, McCormack has captivated audiences with his emotional and expressive style combined with a yearning, emotive aesthetic, which might be described as quintessentially British. His move to New York has arguably added an even greater sense of swing, dynamic group interplay and a mesmeric live sound. The result is a world-class pianist and formidable composer, who is ready to take that career-defining stride on to the international stage. With a stable home at Edition Records, new management, great press and a forthcoming trio album First Light, along with the crack New York team of Zack Lober on bass and Colin Stranahan on drums, 2014 looks set to be Andrew McCormack's year. Mise en Abîme STEVE LEHMAN OCTET Mise en Abîme is the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2009’s Travail, Transformation and Flow, by the Steve Lehman Octet. Described as a “breathtaking accomplishment” by The New York Times,Travail was widely hailed as a groundbreaking synthesis of spectral harmony and jazz improvisation. On Mise en Abîme, Lehman continues to build on his work with spectral harmony – expanding the harmonic palette by incorporating live electronics and a custom-built vibraphone – while at the same time reinforcing his connection to the jazz tradition with three radically re-imagined Bud Powell compositions. The result is an album that solidifies Lehman’s status as a visionary composer with powerful new ideas about the future of harmony, rhythm, compositional form, and electro-acoustic improvisation in jazz. • Full page review in the current Wire • “One of the transforming figures of early 21st-century Jazz.” – The Guardian • “Seriously advanced thinking…incredibly well done and executed beautifully. Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic II - Norwegian Woods IN THE COUNTRY / Solveig SLETTAHJELL / Bugge WESSELTOFT / Knut REIERSRUD A blues guitar introduces the melody, restrained, elegiac and yet full of energy. A clear, female voice takes over, its power potentiated by its uncanny serenity. A piano gathers together the theme one more time before all of them, joined by an additional trio, take it through a mightily dynamic loop until it tapers out almost to nothing in the end. "Ingen Vinner Frem Til Den Evige Ro" is the name of the old Norwegian church song that Knut Reiersrud, Solveig Slettahjell, Bugge Wesseltoft and In The Country transform so fascinatingly into a modern Nordic hymn in the sold-out Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie.

It was another one of those magic moments that the "Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic" series so reliably produces. Founded in 2012 and curated by Siggi Loch, the idea was to craft inimitable evenings by means of thematic concentration, but most of all with stirring, often first-time encounters between outstanding musicians. Such were the first concert in December 2012, also available on CD, with the magical trio of pianists Michael Wollny, Leszek Możdżer and Iiro Rantala, and this fourth evening entitled "Norwegian Woods". The recordings were initially designed to be documentations for radio, but the musical result was so convincing that the artists themselves wanted to publish it on CD. Norwegian individualists present themselves as a closeknit group at this singular fourth "Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic"; and their country as still the spearhead of European jazz, which has long since emancipated itself from the motherland USA and launched decisive developments of its own. For the Blue Notes LOUIS MOHOLO-MOHOLO UNIT The original drummer for The Blue Notes, and sadly now the only surviving original member, Louis Moholo-Moholo here pays tribute to what was not only a great band but one that, on arrival from apartheid South Africa, grew to have a profound and lasting impact on the British jazz scene. Moholo's Unit is in itself a fair rival to the Blue Notes - a rollicking amalgam of young and old (mostly-) UK faces, with Alexander Hawkins a vital presence on the piano and a horn section featuring Jason Yarde and Ntshuks Bonga alongside Henry Lowther and Alan Tomlinson. Little time to draw breath. This new album is a live recording of the Unit made in Italy last year and ably demonstrates the verve and excitement it can generate.

Rejoice + Together JOHNNY DYANI This first release in Cadillac's '40th Anniversary Series' brings together two albums by the great South African bass player Johhny Mbizo Dyani, both originally released by Cadillac on vinyl and never before issued on CD. REJOICE is a trio album with Dyani's compatriot Mongezi Feza and Turkish percussionist Okay Temiz, recorded at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm in October 1972, during a Swedish tour. Sadly by the time the album was actually released in 1988 only one member of the group remained, Feza having died in 1975 aged 30 and Dyani in 1986 aged 39. Both musicians had left South Africa as members of the Blue Notes group, settling in London never to return to their apartheid homeland.

TOGETHER was also recorded in Stockholm, where Dyani was by then living, in Dec 1979 / Jan 1980. The group was put together specially with Dyani's old cohort Dudu Pukwana invited over from London to play. "The music is very special. Transcending the boundaries of nations and cultures, Mbizo’s enthusiasm spread and inspired the sessions with his intense passion. A passion which revelled in a nostalgia for the myths and melodies of Marabi and Kwela. Mbizo’s life was music, he gave his life for music. The Great Pretender / Steel + Breath LESTER BOWIE This live + studio set is a valuable addition to the discography of the Art Ensemble of Chicago trumpeter. The band on the live set, recorded in Berlin in 1982, is that of Bowie's ECM album of the same year, All The Magic!. It is something of a family affair with the trio of vocalists being Bowie's wife Fontella Bass, her brother David Peaston and their mother Martha Bass. Drummer Phillip Wilson, a constant in Bowie's early line-ups, also appears in the 1991 studio session, ina trio setting alongside the geat bassist William Parker. Although only consisting of three tracks this material is the only recording available of this trio and is of further value as Wilson was murdered in New York less than a year later. Lester Bowie ventured to bridge the gap between tradition and avantgarde, between pop and innovation. Where others got lost in no-man’s land, he found himself again in the continuum of Afro-American music. Blues, jazz, rhythm & blues, spirituals, gospels, the return to the African sound and the bold desire to pursue something new. The Chicago Association for the Advancement of Creative Music / AACM, which Lester Bowie joined in the sixties, described it with those magical phrases "Ancient to the Future" and "Great Black Music." Discography PETER KOWALD This discography of musical work by the bassist Peter Kowald, who died in 2002, was compiled in honor of his 70th birthday. It includes an alphabetical catalogue of all 143 published recordings up to 2014 by and with Peter Kowald, as well as the cover designs and additional information relevant to the discography. The 208-page book also contains an index of all the films that Peter Kowald was involved in, texts by Bert Noglik, Floros Floridis, Wolfgang Schmidtke and G端nter Baby Sommer, and several photos and drawings by Peter Kowald. A register of all the participating musicians makes this discography into a scholarly reference work of 20th century music history. Kowald (1944-2002) was a vital figure in German free jazz, playing for many years with the Globe Unity Orchestra, the Schlippenbach Quartet and with Peter Brotzmann, on to periods living in Greece, Japan and in New York. He worked in a vast amount of settings from solo and duo bass recordings to dance and film work. The four CDs here offer a selection of studio and live recordings, including the Grandmothers Teaching session with Chris McGregor, Harry Beckett etc, and two rare albums recorded for small Greek labels: Aphorisms (1997) and The Human Aspect (1990).

Sayat-Nova - Songs of My Ancestors ARMEN DONELIAN Pianist, composer, bandleader, and educator Armen Donelian has carved out an enviable career spanning four decades, including seminal stints with Jazzmen Sonny Rollins, Billy Harper, Chet Baker, and Mongo Santamaria. But two other streams – Classical and Middle Eastern music – have influenced Donelian’s artistic direction. His new double album Sayat-Nova: Songs Of My Ancestors, his tenth release for Sunnyside, combines these divergent paths into a work of stunning cohesion and sonic beauty and further elevates Donelian’s status as an improvising artist of the highest order.

Donelian focuses here on the quintessential and exquisite songs of the 18th Century Armenian troubadour, Sayat-Nova. For generations, Sayat-Nova has been revered throughout the Middle East as a musician, composer, poet and philosopher. Preserving every detail of Sayat-Nova’s melodies, Donelian further redefines them both as a solo performer and with his Trio. “As a child,” Donelian says, “the sounds of Middle Eastern, European Classical and American Jazz records were continually present in our multicultural household. These three threads form the tapestry of Sayat-Nova: Songs Of My Ancestors. Integrating them into a single coherent work is the realization of my lifelong aspiration. I am proud to present it to a broader public.” Track listing: CD1 (Solo): 1. Where Do You Come From, Wandering Nightingale? 6:02 2. I Have Traveled The Whole World Over 5:32 3. Genevieve & Ferdinand, an intimate live set which features McGarry's soaring vocals bolstered by Keith Ganz's melodic acoustic guitar stylings, spans a dazzling stylistic palette. A mix of original compositions and uniquely imaginative interpretations of songs written by the likes of Paul Simon, Todd Rundgren, James Taylor, Toninho Horta, Irving Berlin, and Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein, Genevieve & Ferdinand is McGarry's first duo project and highlights the special connection musical and emotional - between the singer and her husband of 10 years. The Seeker AZAR LAWRENCE Saxophonist Azar Lawrence has been forging his path through music for the past four decades. He has become one of the principal voices of the post-Coltrane age of jazz , a spiritual and musical descendent yet one still forging his own distinct voice and style. Lawrence’s new recording – The Seeker – is an album dedicated to those, like himself, who are on their path and the trailblazers who continue to light their way. Lawrence played in the bands of both Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner, and later with Miles Davis, most notably on Miles’s live recording from Carnegie Hall, Dark Magus. He also played with many other fantastic jazz musicians, most notably trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw, and contemporary soul artists, such as Roberta Flack and Earth, Wind and Fire.

The opportunity to record The Seeker presented itself when Lawrence was booked to perform at Jazz Standard in New York City in December 2011. For the performance, the saxophonist wrote new material for an ensemble of stalwart, exemplary musicians: Venezuelan pianist Benito Gonzalez’s excellent McCoy Tyner-inspired touch caught Lawrence’s ear and he became a member of Lawrence’s regular ensemble. Bassist Essiet Okon Essiet was introduced to Lawrence by Gonzalez and has become a regular member of his ensemble due to his outstanding blend of elements of his African origins and phenomenal bass technique. Lawrence also recruited the great Nicolas Payton to share the front line, feeling that the trumpeter was the best choice, not only because of his beautiful sound, but also because he could best understand the concept of the music and bring his experience to bear. Rounding out the ensemble, drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts was a perfect choice on drums, as his rhythmic ideas and choices were reminiscent of their mutual friend and mentor, Elvin Jones.

Stairway to the Stars DENNY ZEITLIN The trio is an extraordinary setting for pianist and rhythm section. Experienced musicians can take advantage of the flexibility that an ensemble of this size can afford them if they find the right collaborators. The forward-leaning pianist Denny Zeitlin has always been a fan of the trio with its unique musical challenges and rewards, though he finds himself playing in this setting infrequently. Opportunities for solo performances and electronic music work have become his focus over the past two decades. In 2009, Sunnyside released a collection of recordings by the Trio, In Concert, Featuring Buster Williams and Matt Wilson. The tracks were collected from live performances done at The Jazz Bakery in Culver City, California and The Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 2001 to 2006.

The Trio’s new release – Stairway To The Stars – is a full set of pieces performed at The Jazz Bakery in November 2001 at the ensemble’s inception, and recorded by the late, great engineer Drew Daniels. This exquisite recording captures the group at its best, all members locked into a fantastic musical dialog on eight beloved standards and one Zeitlin original. Stairway To The Stars is a fantastic example of the melding of three talented individuals into an astoundingly effective ensemble. Denny Zeitlin, Buster Williams and Matt Wilson compose a true musical powerhouse, though their music presents its strength with subtlety and taste rather than bombast. Track listing: 1. This release presents the seminal Ornette Coleman album Change of the Century (Atlantic SD1327) in its entirety. It was the second LP featuring the wonderful piano-less quartet with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins. This quartet had first recorded together on May 22, 1959, when The Shape of Jazz to Come was made - a watershed event in the genesis of avantgarde jazz. It shattered traditional concepts of jazz harmony, disposing of both the piano player and the whole idea of concretely outlined chord changes. The compositions there followed almost no predetermined harmonic structure, allowing Coleman and Don Cherry an unprecedented freedom to take the melodies of their solo lines in whatever direction they felt in the moment, regardless of what the piece’s tonal center appeared to be. This same quartet would record a second album on October 8, 1959: Change of the Century. The bonus track is from the same session, but was not included on the original LP.

Today and Now LP COLEMAN HAWKINS QUARTET LIMITED EDITION 180g VINYL LP WITH DOWNLOAD CODE This was not an all-star blowing session of the kind Norman Granz frequently arranged during the 1950s. Session producer Bob Thiele called the date for Coleman Hawkins’ regular group of Tommy Flanagan, piano, Major Holley, Jr., bass and Eddie Locke, drums. When the musicians arrived, Thiele handed out lead sheets for a selection of recent jazz compositions, lesser-known standards and what could be called 'folk' tunes. This is the art of the A&R man: Thiele trusted that Hawkins’ legendary ability to sight read a chart once and then perform it was undimmed by the passing of years. Offering unfamiliar but interesting material in a setting where the artists felt comfortable and respected, the producer set the stage for a productive recording session.

The results surpassed the expectations of all the participants. Hawkins turned in one of his most technically accomplished and musically satisfying performances in years. His embouchure and intonation are that of a man years younger, with far fewer miles and hardships. On this recording his playing is superior to even the best work he recorded for Riverside several years earlier, including his sessions with Thelonious Monk and “The Hawk Flies High”. The Crux TOMMY ANDREWS QUINTET It is not often that such a young artist presents an album that sounds so accomplished and mature, but Tommy Andrews is a saxophone player with a wise head on young shoulders. Jellymould Jazz is very proud to release the debut album from this award-winning saxophonist and composer. The Crux is a collection of seven through-composed original works blending the cinematic power of progressive rock and film-music with the dynamic subtleties of classical music, British Jazz and minimalism whilst allowing members of the band passages for improvisation. The maturity in Tommy’s writing can partly be heard in the way in which he generously allows each member of this ensemble to explore his compositions.

It is this selflessness to his approach to making music that has led his quintet to gain a reputation as one of the most exciting groups on the London jazz scene. Bass player Dave Manington is a mainstay of the British jazz scene having been a founding member of Loop Collective and has played with most of the top jazz musicians in the country. His presence in the group is a testimony to the respect that Tommy has earned so quickly. Drummer Dave Hamblett released his own album last year to much critical acclaim and is now one of the busiest players in the country. Completing the line-up are guitarist Nick Costley-White and pianist Rick Simpson; both contemporaries of Tommy’s from The Guildhall School of Music and both illustrative of the wealth of young talent on the scene today.

We Won't Forget You... An Homage to Shirley Horn
DENA DeROSE It's no small thing to be called "The most creative and compelling singer-pianist since Shirley Horn, but that's how Joel Siegel, Washington City Paper, described Dena DeRose. It is with great pleasure that HighNote Records welcomes Dena to their roster with her label debut recording "We Won't Forget You...An Homage To Shirley Horn" which features the understated, swinging side of the late, great Horn. As this year would have been Ms. Horns 80th birthday, it seems only appropriate for DeRose, also a triple threat vocalist, pianist, and arranger, to pay tribute to one of her major idols.

I Love Music MIKE LEDONNE The organ trio has been a staple of small-group jazz for more than half a century, but Mike LeDonne has expanded its range and power by adding another voice, that of the superlative tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, who earned his spurs with organist Charles Earland's group nearly two decades ago and, since then, has risen steadily to the top rank among contemporary tenors. LeDonne and Alexander are bolstered by a brace of seasoned pros, guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Joe Farnsworth. On the other hand, perhaps "bolstered" isn't the proper word, as this is above all a quartet of equals, and Bernstein and Farnsworth's voices are no less decisive than LeDonne's or Alexander's. With LeDonne scorching the Hammond B3, Alexander adding heat to the proceedings at every turn and Bernstein and Farnsworth stoking the boiler room, this is an album that grooves emphatically from the outset – the sort of session that surely would have caused Earland to grin from ear to ear.

Travelling DAVID VENITUCCI TRIO Made of mingled breaths, the music of David Venitucci offers us the stories of three tireless travellers whose complicity is obvious. Maybe because they deliver their memories in an identical breath while taking a new direction, mischievously conversing on their way. With this trio, the melodic lines of Denis LeLoup's trombone wind gracefully, interwtwining with Christophe Marguet's rhythms. David Venitucci gives his accordion a central role, using this unusual ensemble and the gaps it allows to favour the interactions with the trombone and drums, while indulging in the harmonic colours and expressive nuances of his instrument.

Influence - Volume 1 How Do You Think I Feel?
ELVIS PRESLEY A new series from the Discograph label: INFLUENCE seeks to present songs made famous by iconic figures in music history - Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash - alongside the original versions that provided the influence and inspiration. Hence, as an example, it is Mel Tormé's Blue Moon that is included as the parallel to the Elvis version, as it was this particular interpretation of the oft-covered Rodgers & Hart classic that Elvis discovered and loved in April 1949. Of course sometimes the originals are as famous, or more so, as the cover versions, but to hear the two together is illuminating and insightful. On the Elvis Presley set we have 30 masterpieces (including two bonus tracks) by the King on CD 1, whilst CD 2 presents 28 original versions by artists including Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup, Little Richard, Little Junior Parker, Roy Hamilton, Patti Page, Carl Perkins and Big Mama Thornton.
