In Cinema ODDARRANG In Cinema is the magnificent and eagerly-anticipated new album from Finnish band Oddarrang. With a new home at innovative UK label Edition Records, Oddarrangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third album stands as their most accomplished to date. Not only have they confirmed the promise of the hugely successful Music Illustrated (2007) and Cathedral (2011) but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also developed a formidable reputation as one of the most exciting new acts to emerge from Scandinavia to date. The title In Cinema provides a clue to the darker, edgier, sound of this work compared to the earlier albums. Originally written for four independent films and later developed for the album, these soundscapes are uncompromising, contrasting emotive melodies that reach deep and touch the listener on a very personal level with intense dynamic pick-ups built on potent guitar riffs and uplifting, soaring melodies carried by the unusual cello/trombone front line and underpinned by staunch bass playing. A South Asian Suite ARUN GHOSH "A South Asian Suite is an original Indo-Jazz chamber composition by Arun Ghosh inspired by the music, landscape and peoples of India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka as seen from the viewpoint of a British-Asian from a Northern town. The Suite consists of six movements and contained within them is Ghosh's musical response to each of the five countries of the Subcontinent, highlighting regional variations in style, tempo and mood. Originally commissioned and premiered by Manchester Mega Mela and the PRS for Music Foundation in 2010, presented in association with camoci, A South Asian Suite had its London premiere at the Southbank as part of the Alchemy Festival in Spring 2011 and has since been performed in full on four occasions, at Shri Swaminarayan Mandir (Neasden Temple), Tagore Festival Dartington, Corsham Festival and most recently, at Londonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Vortex Jazz Club which garnered a 4 star live review from the London Evening Standard.

Discovered by the Japanese legend Terumasa Hino, Jun Miyake started his career as a jazz trumpeter, graduating Berklee College of Music. With his ability to blend the most seemingly disparate element of music, he has achieved much respect throughout the world. Nubium Swimtrip TONBRUKET With their third album Nubium Swimtrip, recorded at Abbey Road, Tonbruket reach dizzying new heights with a rich sonic soundscape that mixes the hypnotic textures and grooves of contemporary post-rock instrumentalism with elements from post-1970’s prog and space rock, all within the framework of their own lyrical, positively tuneful compositions. Following the tragic loss of Esbjorn Svensson, Dan Berglund has been further guided by the spirit of the trio’s innovative swansong recording Leuocyte released in 2008, but with a shift of emphasis towards the rock music he has always loved, with influences from his hard rock background as well as contemporary bands such as Radiohead and Sigur Rós. The dialogue between rock and jazz has not always been so tasteful, but Tonbrucket don’t fall into the trap of indulging in flashy solos or any kind of speed-freak machismo. Quite the opposite. Theirs is a ‘less is more’ approach, sticking closely to the essence of a composition’s tone, melody and groove. Perhaps accidentally Berglund refers to the tracks as ‘songs’ even though there are no vocals. Though it’s easy to see why he could use that word. The written melodies on Nubium Swimtrip are their best yet.

Berlin Kaboom! MAX VON MOSCH ORCHESTRA Saxophonist Max von Mosch is already an old hand and figurehead of German jazz. His career to date is inseparably linked to his quartet max.bab, while the Max von Mosch Orchestra has been in existence since 2006, initially comprising of friends from the New York scene. The 2011 album "Black Perigord" delivered a lucid, iridescent, weightlessly swinging summary of this phase in his career. Since moving to Berlin, Mosch has put the next generation of this orchestra together and found a team that is more or less an all-star band of young German jazz. That "Berlin Kaboom!" sounds so stirring and alive is also due in part to the fact that it is not a calculated or cerebral studio production. The "Jazz Summer Week" in Munich's Unterfahrt jazz club provided the ideal environment to record the album live. Bigger ensembles are the trend right now. This one shows why.

Basiecally Speaking PETE YORK & YOUNG FRIENDS In 1965 the Spencer Davis Group, including drummer Pete York, were recording for Philips Germany, a session produced by Siggi Loch. York and Loch have remained friends ever since, so perhaps it is no surprise to see the drummer, now aged 70, release an album on Loch's ACT label. In spring 2013 Loch received the Škoda Lifetime Achievement Award on the Jazzahead fair in Bremen. He took the prize money, doubled it and invested it into a project in which young upcoming musicians would play together with an experienced star. And who would better fit the role of the leader and mentor than Pete York.

Blue Pepper ECHOES OF SWING Can a band of today catch the excitement and fire of the swing era? The quartet Echoes Of Swing has proved this is possible since its formation in 1997. Some bands of the 1920s and 30s adopted trumpet, reed, piano and drums, such as those of Lovie Austin and Willie “The Lion” Smith, but these were essentially chamber jazz groups. Echoes Of Swing refused to think exclusively on such a small scale. Instead, they found ways to transfer the sounds of much larger forces to a compact tight-knit setting.

Fiction MATT MITCHELL Fiction is the highly anticipated debut recording from Matt Mitchell, one of the most in-demand pianists in jazz. Recently named one of “Four Young Pianists on the Rise” by The New York Times, Mitchell is a member of, amongst others, the Dave Douglas Quintet and Tim Berne’s Snakeoil. New Music for Trio RAMBERTO CIAMMARUGHI The Italian pianist Ramberto Ciammarughi makes his debut on the Roman label with his "New Music for Trio". And what a trio, with Miroslav Vitous on double bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums. Ciammarughi wrote all of the tracks bar two Vitous' “ImproTrio” and an outstanding version of Miles Davis’ “Bye Bye Blackbird” which opens the album. These represent the only exceptions in a musical discourse where the pianist’s style is always easily recognized, rich in touch and in the articulation of the musical architecture. In the overwhelming, intense piece “Anabasys”, we hear Ciammarughi and Vitous out in front, sustaining an obsessive, burning rhythm. The calmness of “Come Sempre”, some passages of which are almost movie-like, contrasts like chiaroscuro with “B-Loose”, an excellent example, and extremely energetic, of the feeling created by the leader with his valuable travel companions.

One For Rudy JOEY DeFRANCESCO The whole trick of putting together a Hammond B-3 trio is not too different from creating a great pasta sauce. It's all a matter of what basic ingredients you put together, and then how you season and stir it up. Joey DeFrancesco creates a pomodoro of a disc with a mixture of his own Hammond and the tried and true flavors of his regular bandmates Steve Cotter and Ramon Banda. This swinging threesome references everybody from saxophonist Sonny Rollins ("Way Out West") and former boss Miles Davis ("I Don't Wanna Be Kissed") to Thelonious Monk ("Monk's Dream"), putting its own stamp on this format in straightforward fashion. This date is essentially a blowing session with solos aplenty, but the musicians never phone it in. They clearly delight in exploring the material, playing off one another and, in the case of DeFrancesco and Cotter, letting their envious chops off the leash. The Rudy of the title is, of course, the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, who engineered, mixed and mastered the disc.

DENNY ZEITLIN Denny Zeitlin has proven over his career that he is a constant experimenter and ever interested in refining his position as a musical innovator. Zeitlin invokes the spirit of Weather Report on the string laden opening piece, “Meteorology.” “Dawn” is a reflective piece featuring a duet between bass and strings. The aggressively percussive “Tiger, Tiger” is in a tricky 15/8 time signature and is inspired by a William Blake poem. A beautiful solo piano leads into “Kathryn’s Song” which then blossoms into a full quintet, all parts by Zeitlin. Beginning subtly on acoustic piano, “Dystopian Uprising” is an intriguing piece taking inspiration from 20th century classical music, pinning the piano versus a string section. “Charango Dream” is a South American infused trio of flute, bass and vibes. “Monk-y Business Revisited” is a suite that Zeitlin recorded with the assistance of synthesizer pioneer Dr. Pat Gleeson and partly in his studio in Los Angeles. A Thousand Julys KRISTIN SLIPP & DOV MANSKI Two musicians who have made it a goal to impart their love of classic jazz repertoire and the pursuit of en vogue sounds and image are vocalist Kristin Slipp and pianist Dov Manski. The duo’s new recording, A Thousand Julys, presents their unique take on compositions made famous in the golden age of vocal jazz recordings with an approach unlike that which has been heard previously. It was their common admiration for popular music that made the duo consider how they should approach the classic compositions of Jerome Kern, Hoagy Carmichael, et al. North Hero CHRIS MORRISSEY Chris Morrissey is a unique composer. The songs are the centerpiece, and the alchemy between them and the big-hearted improvisers enlisted here are what makes this recording so riveting. The new North Hero is a highly listenable and satisfying musical journey. The album begins with the upbeat “The Spirit of Chanhassan,” a tribute to young Morrissey’s involvement in the unique environment of creative folks at his father’s place of work, the Chanhassen Dinner Theater, where the elder Morrissey served as Music Director and trumpeter. “Minor Silverstein” is a melancholic nod to the celebrated author Shel Silverstein and his lesser-known character Lafcadio the misfit lion, the protagonist of a “minor” work. The manic “Midland, Texas Picnic Area” reflects its namesake city with a scorched earth energy, while “Roman Subway,” the most rhythmically complex piece on the record, stays true to the folky DNA found throughout North Hero.

The stately, though with a loose screw, “One Worn Mile” is named for the stretch of road on I-94 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, between his former apartment and that of an old flame. The catchy “Hands Crystals Anderson” is his playful jab at the fad of unwieldy indie rock band names. The lovingly composed “Lullaby for Twins” is a soft tribute to Morrissey’s sister and her twin sons, a beautiful and immediate tune written in one sitting. The recording concludes with “Electric Blanket,” an expansive, evolving composition, which really showcases the dynamism of both the ensemble and the composer. Plays Fats Waller in Berlin AKI TAKASE Takase's take on Fats Waller is reverent but eccentric and humourous. This live album showcases material first heard on Enja's studio release from 2003, but if anything the live set is even more infectious. Waller traditionalists may baulk at a bunch of (mostly) free improvisers tackling the material in this way, but Waller himseld would most probably have loved it, for he was one of jazz's first avantgardists, an iconoclast. Takase herself chips in with two compositions and adds an 11 minute romp throgh W.C. Handy's Way Down South Where the Blues Began for good measure. Eugene Chadbourne's banjo and vocals may hearken to a bygone American age, but this music, recorded 100 years after Fats was born, is proven timeless and universal. There’s a difference, in any form of music, between a covers band and an outfit with more original things to say. Have a butchers at the song selection on Show Me The Way. A couple of standards, fair enough. They’re reconstituted with taste and verve - jazz was ever thus. But alongsde Cole P. and Billy S. sit Coombes, G and Weller, P and, perhaps surprisingly, they don’t suffer in the comparison; a sure sign that there’s some proper arranging going on here. And Kevin’s not afraid to demonstrate his own wares on the same market stall. His songs develop the well known themes of the golden age of popular song writing (if you, like I, believe that to be the 1940s) but transplanted, maybe, to the East End; transmogrified into a slice of contemporary life recognisable to us all. There’s craft in the writing, and a nicely judged sass in the delivery. Souleymane DEBADEMBA Boosted by the success of a first album admired by all and a series of concerts which often turned into wonderful dance nights, Debademba is a group formed from the magical encounter of two fellow musicians: the guitarist Abdoulaye Traoré from Burkina Faso, who is a soloist and an inventive beat master, and the Malian singer Mohamed Diaby, a charismatic griot. These colourful characters are, like the other members of the group (the rhythm section and the keyboard players), Parisian Africans who are very prominent on the capital’s cosmopolitan live music scene. The kind of music they make is modern and explosive, drawing from afrobeat, highlife and mbalax styles, with hints of Mandinka music mixed in, all combined with strong blues elements and the occasional nod to rock. Mortissa CIGDEM ASLAN 'Mortissa' (a strong independent woman) is an album of smyrneika/rebetiko songs in Greek and Turkish with musical roots in Anatolia. The music arose in the turbulent times of the 1920s. This is the music of the alternative, the underground scene, the music of freedom-loving people; appropriate for the current political situation. Although there have been many recordings of rebetiko over the years, Istanbul-born, London-based singer Cigdem Aslan presents a fresh take; an immigrant herself, a person from a minority ethnic group, a female singer in a usually male genre. On the Path of Death and Life FUMIO YASUDA Fumio Yasuda (composition) and Stefan Winter (soundscapes) create three soundscapes with the title On The Path Of Death And Life. The album was composed and created after the catastrophe in Fukushima in Japan. The pianist Fumio Yasuda performs his works and improvisations with the singer Akimuse and Nobuyoshi Ino on bass. Mariko Takahashi and Stefan Winter record the soundscapes (musique concrĂ¨te) traveling through Japan. Nobuyoshi Araki takes photos of human beings, flowers and from the 'paradise', which appear in the booklet. "On The Path Of Death And Life" creates the sensation of experiencing a particular acoustic environment using the searched and found sounds and noises with musical performances. Each of the three parts has the same time frame of 22 minutes, nevertheless the parts are individual and self-contained. Originally 22 is a master number, which symbolizes the overcoming of obstacles and also high energy both in the shadow and in the light.
