VARIOUS ARTISTS Stand Up, People presents the diverse and almost forgotten sounds of 60s and 70s Serbia, Macedonia and Kosovo, with nineteen tracks that highlight the flowering of Roma Gypsy culture in that period. The songs have resurfaced thanks to the vinyl-hunting efforts of London's Vlax Records, who have rescued the original 45rpms from provincial fleamarkets across the Balkans, or dug them out of the darkest corners of the vaults of the National Library in Belgrade. All the tracks were then painstakingly restored to their former analogue glory at Carvery Cuts Studio, London.

African Griot Groove BABA SISSOKO Amazing solo release from this original Malian griot, who has collaborated with the likes of Habib Koité, Lokua Kanza, Boubacar Traoré, Rokia Traoré, Art Ensemble Of Chicago and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Born in Mali in 1963, Baba Sissoko is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who began playing the talking drums (tamani) during his childhood. On this album he also plays guitar, ngoni, kamalengoni, karagnan (scraper), doun doun (bass drum), sokou (violin) and calabash. African Griot Groove is a virtuoso and passionate excursion into the roots of a musical language that is centuries old. However, while Sissoko (who now lives in Italy, home of the Afrodisia label) pays homage to his roots, he is also interested in musical exploration and this is definitely the task at hand for Sissoko and the four musicians who join him on this album - Erick Yanou (Cameroon) on electric bass, Philippe Lago (Ivory Coast) on drum kit, Abu Djigo (Senegal) on electric guitar and Reynaldo Hernandez (Cuba) on congas and batar - for a fusion of traditional and modern sounds.

Wild Tune Stray Rhythm DAWANGGANG Chinese avant-rock folk! Following the international success of Hanggai and Anda Union, here comes another band from China with a unique sound and global potential. Dawanggang is a musical ensemble created by Song Yuzhe, an eclectic musician from the North East of China. The content of the music reaches far and broad, from nomadic themes of Western China to experimental lines, touching on folk tales and giving a big sense of space. The band is of flexible composition and wants to bring together musicians from all sorts of musical, cultural, ethnical backgrounds so as to reach beyond differences and create new musical dimensions. The Adventures of Prince Ahmed THE KHOURY PROJECT The Adventures of Prince Ahmed is the first silent animation film based on The Arabian Nights. When you watch this silent film with its new music track by the Khoury brothers, it immediately becomes obvious that these two forms of cultural expression were made for each other. The film's utopias are perfectly complemented by the music's cultural diversity. The Palestinian brothers from Jordan have in fact travelled widely , just like Prince Ahmed. Zimbabwe-Shona Ritual Music AMBUYA NYATI The mbira is one of the iconic instruments of Africa traditional music. Identified particularly with Zimbabwe its resonant metal keys form the basis of much of the country's popular music, with the sound transposed to the electric guitar. In Shona culture, mbira (the term for both the instrument and the music) holds an important role in spiritual and ritual purposes, but it can also be played outside of the ceremonial context. Musician, healer and spirit medium Ambuya Nyati states: "the mbira is our way to pray to God...it's our telephone to the ancestors." 55-year old Ambuya Nyati began playing mbira at the age of 8 and achieved popularity playing in Zimbabwe. She has been invited to perform in Europe three times, most recently earlier this year. These recordings were made in the studios of Radio France in July 2012. All tracks were freely chosen by the musicians, and the one-take recordings were necessarily played in abbreviated versions - in ritual contaxt the pieces can exceed 30 minutes in length.

Agam STUART MASTERS & RISHI RANJAN The Agam recordings are the result of a chance meeting at a small music shop in the heart of west London. Rishi enthusiastically shared his knowledge and love of Indian classical music via the Maihar school of sarode playing, in the style of Bade Baba Allaudin Khan and Stuart demonstrated a style of guitar playing influenced by European and American folk and classical traditions as well as Indian and Arabic modality. Rishi called Stuart on his next visit to London and these recordings are what followed as the two musicians lived and recorded together , trying to find a common musical ground and adapting their styles to bring out the best of their respective traditions, allowing space for something new to emerge. The pieces are in places serious, playful, moody and above all expressive. They pay their respects to other cross-cultural collaborations but strive to find their own place. Along with the musical input of Dave Engel and Mani Singh, the ideas took form and became what you hear.

It is most definitely a work that furthers the capacity of jazz to encompass and reinterpret all languages of music. In any case, the title tells a lot. Mattia Cigalini and his band (Bebo Ferra on guitar, Riccardo Fioravanti on bass and Stefano Bagnoli on drums) truly push themselves "Beyond", and manage to find a surprising point of touchdown between jazz and pop-rock of the last 10 years. The young saxophonist, barely twenty-three years old, conveys the music he grew up with in his own way, so it is no wonder that he has chosen to test himself against pop stars like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga. It is a collection of pieces about the Spanish painter Francisco Goya, who began his artistic career as a celebrated court painter, and who in the course of his long life transformed into a maverick visionary whose fateful influence on art cannot be overestimated, even 200 years after his death.

Goya was of course a loner, but Jansen looked for a number of allies to help him exploit the spectrum of colours as fully as possible. He began developing and building on the tracks in his trio with drummer Eric Schaefer and bassist Andreas Edelmann, but he soon noticed that something was missing. Structural ideas reached out like Goya's chimeras. What were originally improvisations had to be refined. Forms that had already manifested themselves demanded new borders time and time again. Jansen went to Hamburg to record additional tracks with the keyboard explorer Friedrich Paravicini, who contributed not only a Hammond organ, cembalo, vibraphone and cello, but also the magical tones of the Ondes Martenot, a prehistoric electronic keyboard. But the sounded needed even more life: cellist Stephan Braun was recruited, and one track emerged in a duet with trumpeter Nils W端lker, whom Jansen has collaborated with for many years now. Drummer's Corpse was originally conceived and written in 2005, following a devastating apartment fire which consumed nearly all of Prideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s possessions, recordings, and compositions. The other composition included here, Some Will Die Animals, is composed of a serialized tone row for double bass and a graphic score for guitar, bass drums and tom-toms, and is dedicated to his late friend Gen Makino. The piece is interrupted twice by a news broadcast, read simultaneously by 2 men and 2 women, each with the text in different orders. The broadcast mashes through many things, including global sex-terrorism, suicide & scientific descriptions of imaginary future-animals.
