Synovial Joints STEVE COLEMAN AND THE COUNCIL OF BALANCE Composer and alto saxophonist Steve Coleman is widely considered to be among the most influential artists in jazz. He was recipient in 2014 of three prestigious awards: a MacArthur Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship and Doris Duke Performing Artist Grant. This comes at a time when Coleman is at a creative peak, incorporating a lifetime of research into African diasporic culture and cycles found in nature and astronomy into his musical methods. His influence among young artists, particularly in his approach to rhythm, has never been stronger. Synovial Joints is the most ambitious project in Coleman’s 30-year career as a bandleader. The music is written for 21 musicians, encompassing his core Five Elements group, augmented by musicians from jazz, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian and contemporary classical circles. The music was based on ideas that reflect the processes, functions and rhythms of the human body - to model individual elements of the musical composition on the physiological movements within the nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, endocrine, and exocrine systems. The overall musical structure of the composition is held together based on the musculoskeletal system, hence the title.

Film of Life Remixes 10" TONY ALLEN After releasing his new solo album Film of Life in October 2014, Tony Allen makes a bridge with modern club music through two remixes from talented Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer and Fort Romeau. House guru Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer present a rework of African Man, in which the Germano-Chilean pair slowly drags it in a minimalist groovy mutation, spreading their implacable groove to the rhythm of percussion and brass. On a relentless pace, shimmering bells come interweave with a strong beat acting on the track like a delightful metronome. Once again, the duo demonstrate their talent here, bringing a personal touch while retaining the original warm and colorfoul soul of the piece. On the B-Side, rising Londoner Fort Romeau reveals a new facet of Tony’s piece Go Back, bringing deep graceful and elegant modern discoid rhythm mixed with silky vocals. The piece unfolds and develops itself gradually to envelop us in a gentle and rhythmic house. The languid and dreamy loop galvanized by deep jerky cuts and captivating synth pads invites us to an harmonious escape.

Ester Rada ESTER RADA Ester Rada's Ethiopian roots permeate her unique mix of global urban grooves with Ethio-jazz and swinging Addis funk, topped with her positive soul voice. Born 1985 in Hebron, a year after her parents arrived in Israel as part of the mass airlift of Ethiopian Jews, she grew up in a tough Tel Aviv district. Her father was a singer and the house was filled with Ethiopian music. At 18 she joined the army and was a featured singer in a music troop but on leaving she fell into acting and became highly successful in TV and theatre. In 2012 she made her Life Happens EP and hasn't looked back, assembling her excellent band, touring the US, Canada, Europe and Australia and releasing her album entitled Ester Rada, which now gets an international release courtesy of Discograph.

Combining R&B, Ethio-Jazz, reggae and classic funk, Rada’s music is a truly global stew that has earned her critical raves and performances around the world, including an opening tour slot for R&B queen Alicia Keys, who has become one of Rada’s most outspoken champions. Ester Rada belongs to today’s open-minded, uninhibited transcultural generation, who listen as much to traditional rhythm ‘n’ blues as to ancestral grooves and quality pop. All of these influences are tangible in her energetic tracks, which she crafts from lightning-speed funk and the elegance of immortal black music. Ester Rada has ushered in the soul music of the new millennium. "What’s the likelihood that an Ethiopian-born Israeli singer would have internalized old-school American soul, funk and jazz to the point where she could pass for a star in any of those styles? Ester Rada is exactly that. " — New York Music Daily Ester Rada will be performing at WOMAD 2015. Track listing: 1. Monsters 4:52 / 2. Out 4:06 / 3. Sorries 3:35 / 4. Life Happens 3:55 / 5. It Takes Two to Tango JUKKA PERKO & IIRO RANTALA "It Takes Two To Tango" focusses a central musical point of reference in Perko and Rantala’s musical language: the tango. It may come as a surprise to some, but Finland is second only to Argentina on the list of countries where the tango plays a big part in popular culture. Indeed, the tango may be even more important to Finland because it is not considered a musical performance there like in South America, but a dance music for everyday use. Iiro Rantala is always surprising, exciting and lively and yet here also highly supportive to Jukka Perko, with his unmistakable lyricism, elegant to the very highest note, in which the strength of bebop is just as evident as Nordic melancholia and of course the passion of the tango. Once again Finland is the first on the floor and leaving footsteps. “It Takes Two To Tango” is the first joint recording of the pair, in a lyrically dense discourse on the topic of love in all its facets. It is an homage to their musical homeland and the uniting power of jazz.

The Oldest Living Thing FULVIO SIGURTA Back from the intriguing experience of “SPL” (in trio with Andrea Lombardini on bass guitar and Alessandro Paternesi on drums), a modern record with surprising turns, Fulvio Sigurtà is back with a more classically jazz album. Supported by Steve Swallow’s stunning bass guitar and Federico Casagrande’s refined acoustic guitar, Sigurtà’s trumpet and flugelhorn weave soft, enchanting melodies. You may let yourself be lulled by the first song and title track on this album, written by the band leader, and Casagrande’s “Sorrows And Joy of A Lamb”. The two regularly alternate as writers of the nine original tracks on “The Oldest Living Thing”, composed by one or the other in more or less equal measure. The only virtual guest here is Ennio Morricone, who is involved thanks to an appealing reinterpretation of the theme from “Nuovo Cinema Paradiso”.

Although the temperament and uniqueness of Steve Swallow is no surprise, one can rightly be a little amazed by the continuous growth of Sigurtà and Casagrande: the former has mastered a variety of timbres that would make many players envious (the intro to “Sunday Snow Flakes” is a case in point), while the latter invents sounds and harmonies that perfectly combine with the band leader’s ideas (“Travel Back”). Two of the talents among the new generation of Italian jazzmen who are worthy of being listened to most attentively. A Million Colors in Your Mind CYRUS CHESTNUT A certain naturalism and hard-earned grace run through the compositions and playing of Cyrus Chestnut, the Baltimore-bred modern-mainstream player best known for his work as a resourceful solo pianist and dynamic ensemble leader. Those qualities shine through again on A Million Colors in Your Mind, his first recording as a leader on the HighNote label. Gospel-blues shades color several pieces and Chestnut slides easily from lush Art Tatum-like voicings to austere single note statements, from Powell-like flurries of scales to two-handed forays into Jaki Byard territories. With bassist David Williams, whose tenure with the late Cedar Walton makes him the perfect choice for a piano trio, and drummer Victor Lewis, Cyrus delivers ten great tunes and puts his own unique spin on all of them. HighNote Records is extremely proud to welcome Cyrus Chestnut to its exclusive roster of artists.

Rigamaroll JERRY BERGONZI “When I go into the studio with these guys, it's not like I feel pressure. It's like, 'oh boy, let's go have some fun,'” says saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi, recalling how his previous Savant recordings came together. In short, the acclaimed veteran didn't want the fun to end. So now here we have another terrific recording to complement the reedman's impressive Savant discography and another chance to delight in the exceptionally responsive company he keeps. Revelling in the company of long-time partners bassist Dave Santoro and drummer Andrea Michelutti, Jerry also brings Pasadena-born pianist Bruce Barth into the studio. Jerry doesn't often record with a pianist – when one cuts their musical teeth with a pianist like Dave Brubeck the titan's shadow must loom large over the keyboard – but he and Bruce have become muy simpatico over the years and their interplay here is remarkable indeed. With Jerry's imaginative compositions and his intense approach to music-making, this is jazz that cuts you no quarter. The whole session swings, communicates and challenges as only Jerry Bergonzi can.

Into View PAUL RILEY QUINTET Into View is the debut album from this incredibly gifted young musician that showcases Paul not only as a fine instrumentalist with a mature musical language but also as a composer with a real depth of understanding for melody and harmony and the musicians he is writing for. These musicians are the cream of the current crop. Guitarist Ant Law is becoming a stalwart on the UK jazz scene as a sideman for Tim Garland and Jason Rebello and has just released his second album as a leader to much critical acclaim. Drummer Dave Hamblett is one of the busiest players on this circuit and Into View is the second album that he appears on Jellymould Jazz (the first being Tommy Andrews’ 2014 release The Crux). Bass player Matt Ridley is one of the most formidable musicians of his generation who has played with a variety of world--class ensembles and pianist Mitch Jones is known for his work with Dennis Rollins’ Bad Bone & Co.

Throughout the album it is Paul Riley’s developed flowing melodic lines, often played in unison with Law’s gritty guitar sound and infectious rhythmic grooves laid down by this fine rhythm section that are the star of this album. Tunes like The Way Home, Outlaw and Spindrift demonstrate the tightness in ensemble playing between the two frontline players while there is some outstanding soloing from all members. There are two ballads, Song For Laura and Looking Back and two short “bookend” tracks aptly titled Opening and Closing on this 11--track album. Once again, Jellymould is proud to support one of the finest young musicians making their way onto the national jazz scene. Existence OLAVI LOUHIVUORI Drummer Olavi Louhivuori's second solo album (released on the Eclipse Music label, via Edition Distribution) is a concept album about the full cycle of human existence. The music combines electronic ambience, progressive and experimental sounds and tones with Louhivuori's fantastic drumming. Existence is a genuine solo record. Louhivuori plays all intruments, produces and has composed all the music. Known as a fantastic jazz drummer, Louhivuori goes on a musically different path on this album. Existence is sonically crisp and flows in auditive time and space with a sharp focus on the possibilities of modern studio technology. The heart of the album, however, is not studio trickery but the emotional power of its compositions. For the past few years Olavi has been touring the world as a drummer of Tomasz Stanko Quintet. Besides that Louhivuori has performed with internationally acclaimed artists such as Lee Konitz, Anthony Braxton, Marilyn Crispell and Susanne Abbuehl. He has also played with groups such as the finnish UMO Jazz Orchestra and Piirpauke.

New Day KEVIN HAYS Kevin Hays’s New Day marks the celebrated pianist and composer’s return to the studio and first release as bandleader in over four years. The hiatus has provided Hays ample time to further his own craft of songwriting and performing, his main vehicle being his New Day Trio, featuring bassist Rob Jost and drummer Greg Joseph, musicians well versed in rock and folk as well as the jazz tradition. One tendency that Hays has more recently been relying on is the increasing use of his voice. This element has lent a more tuneful bent to his music, both vocal and instrumental. The focus on songwriting has led to a certain amplification of singer as songwriter and on his new recording, New Day, Hays enlisted fellow singer-songwriter (and jazz bassist) Tony Scherr on guitar and the wonderfully expressive Gregoire Maret on chromatic harmonica.
Label: Sunnyside File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSC1419 Barcode: 016728141925 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack KEVIN HAYS - piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer, vocals GREGOIRE MARET - harmonica TONY SCHERR - electric & acoustic guitar ROB JOST - electric & acoustic bass GREG JOSEPH - drums & percussion
The music that was recorded for New Day highlights the various influences that have become a part of Hays’s music. The jazz influences are impossible to summarize, as many of the pieces are harmonically complex and have virtuosic displays of improvisational genius. There are also the more song-driven elements taken from the blues, folk and rock, further augmented by Hays’s inclusion of guitar and harmonica in the band, creating rootsy music aimed at the gut.

Quartet (Santa Cruz) 1993 1st Set ANTHONY BRAXTON Re-issue of the first live set from CD hatART 2-6190, recorded live at Kuumbwa Jazz Center, Santa Cruz, California on 19th July 1993 "The “reception dynamics” embodied by the Yoshi patrons who gave Anthony Braxton a new sweater, the Santa Cruz woodwind technician who overhauled Braxton’s instruments pro bono, and, most tellingly, the cheers of the Kuumbwa Jazz Center audience, are integral to the Quartet’s stellar performances on Quartet (Santa Cruz) 1993. During its tenure, Braxton frequently described the Quartet’s work with the phrase “navigation through form.” For Braxton, the West Coast tour was a definitive demonstration of this meta-reality. While Braxton’s use of “navigation through form” was generally taken by commentators to mean an openended odyssey, the phrase now suggests a journey with a clearcut destination; as such, the music made at Santa Cruz represented a long sought-after goal, completing the Quartet’s passage through Braxton’s rapidly expanding music system." – Bill Shoemaker, July 1996

"Nature neither ages nor stays the same, it recycles and thus re-identifies itself perpetually, and we continually experience it from a new perspective. Likewise with Art; therefore it’s impossible not to hear the music of Cecil Taylor – akin to a force of Nature – with different ears 34 years on. Similarities may be recognized, a few details confirmed, but the response must embrace meaningful change, or the music, and the recipient, are not alive, cavorting in the same time/space sensibility. The garden that is re-invigorated and re-defined does not die. Taylor’s choice of the garden to represent this 1981 performance has its roots in his longstanding belief that creativity is the ever-present condition of Nature (in our case, Life), and that his music in particular grew (and continues to grow) out of a personal engagement with the blues – a music, metaphorically, of the soil, grounded in the legacy of African Americans – and specifically an awareness of the innovative transformational powers of Duke Ellington. As he explained in the 1960s to A.B. Spellman (Black Music: Four Lives, Schocken Books), “He could play a blues, but man, the way the thing was laid out it transcended the single idea of the blues. I’m still trying to come to grips with that, you know.” – Art Lange Track listing: 1. Elell 26:53 2. Garden 1 11:18 3. Stepping On Stars 8:58

One of the most revolutionary saxophonists in jazz history, John Coltrane was also a superb ballad player, capable of creating a very personal and intimate sound. This LP compiles some of Trane’s ballad recordings made for the Prestige label in the mid to late 1950s. Backing him are other jazz greats like pianists Red Garland and Tadd Dameron, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummers Art Taylor, Jimmy Cobb, and Philly Joe Jones. Coltrane made enormous progress during his time with Miles Davis in 1955-57, but the saxophonist’s addiction forced the trumpeter (who had kicked his own drug habit cold turkey shortly before) to fire him. Coltrane went back to Philadelphia to get himself clean, and in the spring of 1957 he joined the Thelonious Monk Quartet, which was playing at the Five Spot Café in New York. Trane returned to Miles Davis’ group in 1958, which produced the classic album Kind of Blue the following year. From then on, Coltrane would gradually become one of the best-known names in jazz. ERIC DOLPHY LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING INCLUDES FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD
Label: Jazz Wax File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: JWR4568 Barcode: 8436542018494 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 LP ERIC DOLPHY, alto sax, flute, bass clarinet FELIPE DÍAZ, vibraphone & leader ARTHUR JENKINS, piano BOBBY RODRÍGUEZ, bass TOMMY LÓPEZ, conga drum LOUIE RAMÍREZ, timbales
This LP contains one of Eric Dolphy’s only two real incursions into the world of Latin jazz. Although some touches of Latin music were present since the early jazz days (as proven, for instance, by Louis Armstrong’s 1930 version of “The Peanut Vendor” –that is, “El Manicero” with English lyrics), the fusion of Latin and jazz truly started in the midforties. It was highly promoted by musicians like Dizzy Gillespie (who added the great Cuban conga drummer Chano Pozo to his orchestra) and Charlie Parker (who recorded a full LP of Latin tunes, including “La Cucaracha”, with Machito and his orchestra – Armstrong had recorded “La Cucaracha” in 1935). While the two aforementioned albums were issued as by the “Latin Jazz Quintet”, Dolphy is the only musician to play on both of them! The repertoire combines jazz tunes that already had a Latin feeling – like Gillespie’s “A Night in Tunisia” – with original Latin tunes by the band’s members, as well as Latin arrangements of well-known jazz standards like “Speak Low”, “You Don’t Know What Love Is” – the only tune in which Dolphy sits out –, “Lover”, and Gershwin’s perennial favorite “I Got Rhythm”. The results are interesting throughout, and Dolphy’s playing often sets the mood. Whether playing the flute, the bass clarinet or the alto sax, he seems to have a different voice and different things to say on each instrument. Track listing: SIDE A: 1. YOU’RE THE CUTEST ONE 3:42 2. SPEAK LOW 4:54 3. I GOT RHYTHM 2:37 4. A NIGHT IN TUNISIA 3:51 5. CHA CHA KING 2:34 SIDE B: 1. I WISH I WERE IN LOVE AGAIN 3:03 2. YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT LOVE IS 4:04 3. Bullhorn LP VERNERI POHJOLA 140 gram VINYL LP EDITION Finnish trumpeter/composer, Verneri Pohjola is on the brink of becoming one of the most exciting and original European musicians of his generation. The new album Bullhorn is his third as leader and first with Edition Records. It features Pohjola’s long term associates, friends and Finnish all-star band: pianist Aki Rissanen, bassist Antti Lötjönen and drummer Teppo Mäkynen. Pohjola’s distinctive tone, with its deeply affecting purity and lyricism, and highly melodic improvising, is embedded in self-penned compositions marked by memorable and imaginative themes that steer clear of any hackneyed notion of ‘Nordic’ jazz. Bullhorn is a key album in Pohjola’s career, marking the shift from a rising star to an artist of real substance with a powerful, unique sound and a sense of deepening maturity and clarity of vision. Bullhorn is the album that finally realises Verneri’s enormous creative potential.

Blue Skies LP CASSANDRA WILSON 180g VINYL EDITION IN GATEFOLD SLEEVE Blue Skies is the third album by Cassandra Wilson, originally released in 1988 on Stefan Winter's JMT label. Now of course Wilson is a major star, with a nascent career on Columbia following her Blue Note period which saw her transcend her jazz roots into folk pop territory. Blue Skies raised eyebrows when it was released for Wilson's move away from M-Base, with a straight ahead trio of Mulgrew Miller, Lonnie Plaxico and Terri Lyne Carrington backing her on a set of standards. The stylistic volte face obviously worked though, as the album was Billboard's number one jazz album of that year.

Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh LP MAGMA 180 gram VINYL LP VERSION WITH DOWNLOAD CODE This 1973 album is widely regarded as Magma's masterpiece, their magnum opus. It tells the story of Nebëhr Gudahtt, a prophet who tries to make people of earth to understand the Kobaian philosophy.

"Magma’s third album was where their sound kicked out the jazz and became as stark as the monochromatic sleeve of gold and black that it housed... It’s the equivalent of a musical death march as performed by marathon runners outfitted in full body armour as black robed maidens bedecked with metal breastplates wail lamentably by torchlight while recounting their past victories...not to mention their future tragedies. Subtitled ‘The Third Movement of Theusz Hamtaahk’ and sung in their mythic tongue of Kobaian, “Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh” is one unflaggingly dark and spiritual cataclysm, so hold onto your hat and head and try to follow along with the lyric sheet, if you dare..." First Touch - 20th Anniversary Edition DOMINIC MILLER It has been 20 years since the original release of FIRST TOUCH, Dominic Miller’s first solo album. "Sting has kept Dominic very busy over the last 24 years. Recording sessions, world tours, TV appearances… they’ve even co-written a couple of tunes, most notably ‘Shape Of My Heart’. But Dominic refers to his role in Sting’s entourage as “my day job” and after a busy day at the office, Dominic makes it his business to add to his own prestigious collection of solo albums. The first solo CD came out in the mid 90s; entitled First Touch, it featured moodily beautiful nylon string melodies over atmospheric backdrops with the occasional fiery Latin influenced instrumental on the side."
