Indio do Apartamento VINICIUS CANTUARIA Since his 1990s relocation to New York from his native Brazil, Vinicius Cantuaria has quietly imposed himself at the very forefront of his country's music. A singer-songwriter of versatility and grace, Cantuaria has over the course of ten albums adopted the mores of the downtown NY scene into his craft with intriguing and beguiling results. Never losing sight of the bossa nova and Brazilian jazz, his involvement with the likes of Bill Frisell, Brian Eno, Marc Ribot, Arto Lindsay, Ryuichi Sakamoto etc has created a unique style and sound. With « Indio De Apartamento » (Indian in the Apartment), his newest album, he confirms this trend and goes even further in brevity and purity, while maintaining an exemplary singularity towards the Bossa Nova world. Dedicated to the memory of his mother, who died last year, this solemn and serious album, recorded between New York and Rio de Janeiro, again features an array of special guests; Bill Frisell, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jesse Harris and Norah Jones on the piano. Cantuaria himself sings and plays guitars, drums, percussion and keyboards. Again, the result is a magnificent album, of incredible subtlety and full of contrasts, of great unity and remarkable diversity, with a pure and completed classicism.

Colombia - Sixto Silgado 'Paito' & Los Gaiteros de Punta Brava SIXTO SILGADO 'PAITO' & LOS GAITEROS DE PUNTA BRAVA Sixto Silgado 'Paito' represents the "gaitas" ensemble (flutes accompanied by alegre, llamador and tambora drums) at its most lively and dynamic, preserving its original expressiveness and revitalising it with his own sensibility. Now recognised as a direct descendant of the interaction of Colombia's three major peoples (Whites, Blacks and Indians), gaitas music is enjoying a remarkable rebirth. In recent decades, gaita has become an integral part of the concept of Colombian identity. It represents "the encounter of three peoples who formed into one, with the birth of Colombian music." Although the term gaita is used for bagpipes in Spain and Bulgaria, and for an oboe in North Africa, the Colombian name applies to a straight flute. About 90cms long, the Colombian gaita is made from the heart of a cactus, with a head made from a mixture of beeswax and charcoal. Gaitas are female (five apertures) and male (two apertures), the two of which are played together.

The Green Seagull TOMMY EVANS ORCHESTRA The Green Seagull is a mesmerising jazz suite inspired by the life of the composer’s uncle, a parish priest who invested decades building spiritual, cultural and political bridges. At the helm is composer and conductor Tommy Evans. As one of the most prolific and original young musicians in the UK, Evans is the founder of Submotion Orchestra and is also in Gentleman’s Dub Club. But it is this suite (for which he was awarded the 2011 BASCA Award for Contemporary Jazz Composition) that is his most cherished project to date. The tremendous breadth of influences in the music - jazz, dubstep, Indian, classical - acts as a fitting vehicle to showcase some of the finest young jazz talent in the UK. The result is a vibrantly modern big band jazz sound of lush soundscapes and hypnotic grooves which create an epiphany of music that is accessible, unconventional and deeply moving.

My History of Jazz IIRO RANTALA Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala offers his personal history of the music that captivated him when he was 13. "My history of jazz" takes us from Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations, upon which Rantala threads the album like a string of pearls, to George Gershwin, Kurt Weill, Duke Ellington, Juan Tizol, Thelonious Monk and the Swedish cool jazz saxophonist Lars Gullin, alongside five original Rantala compositions. With "my history of jazz" Rantala places himself at the head of a new pianist generation that liberates itself from the inflated cult of the "all new" and instead returns to build on the old jazz tradition of studying the great inventors of the genre.

NILS LANDGREN „The Moon, The Stars And You“ is the sequel to Landgren's highly successful “Sentimental Journey” and a is real concept album. Jazz has always had a certain fascination for the moon. After love, it is one of the more common topics for jazz standards, and for Nils Landgren is no exception. “The moon and the stars are just wonderful to look at – especially with someone special. The moon is closely connected with love,” says Landgren, showing his romantic side. “I knew that there are so many good songs about the moon to choose from.” These songs include jazz standards, such as Henry Mancini’s “Moon River” or Herbie Hancock’s “Stars in Your Eyes”, as well as folk and pop songs like Kris Kristofferson’s “Please Don’t Tell Me How The Story Ends” or “Moonshadow” by Cat Stevens, and he also includes South American song by Kurt Weill called “Holofotes” alongside his own compositions.

Continuum DAVID VIRELLES One of the most in-demand pianists in jazz, Cuban-born pianist David Virelles makes his Pi Recordings debut with Continuum, a collaborative effort with bassist Ben Street (Danilo Perez, Kurt Rosenwinkel), legendary drummer Andrew Cyrille (David Murray, Cecil Taylor) and Cuban folkloric percussionist/poet Román Díaz. Virelles' compositions are inspired by various aspects of Afro-Cuban religious practices; systems that include music, poetry, storytelling, dance, symbols, art, divination, and magic. He draws specifically from the rituals and myths surrounding the Abakuá, an Afro-Cuban secret society. Helping to bring that tradition to life is Roman Díaz, who spins poetry that speaks to the multi-layered fabric of Cuban culture.

More recently he has played with ECM recording artist Tomasz Stanko, accompanying the trumpet player on his most recent ECM recording. As of late he has become a regular performer at the Village Vanguard. His work as a leader has garnered critical acclaim for its innovation as well as its maturity.

"David Virelles arrived in New York in 2008 and seemed to go straight to the top of the class: playing gigs with Steve Coleman, Chris Potter and Mark Turner and generally making himself noticeable, breaking through with strong and hard-to-define patterns and sounds." - New York Times

Landing Ground LAURA JURD An impressive debut CD from trumpeter/ composer Laura Jurd. Conceived as a unified whole, the album with its six pieces and three improvised dialogues reveals a young composer of character and immense promise. The album deals with themes of departure and return. With both a jazz and a string quartet (the Ligeti Quartet), the music is at the increasingly traversed borders of contemporary classical music and jazz. From Kind of Blue era Miles Davis, to echoes of Messiaen, Alban Berg and Shostakovich, a distinctive individual and appealing voice emerges. Three free-improvised dialogues where Laura Jurd responds in real time to the imaginative narratives of pianist (Elliot Galvin) cellist (Ben Davis) and drummer (Corrie Dick) provide the ideal counterweight to the six structured and planned compositions. Nine carefully programmed tracks, which, through thematic and musical connections, build to a satisfying whole.

Piazzolla ! ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE JAZZ Daniel Yvinec The ingenious artist, Piazzolla who crossed borders to mesh musical style and culture, symbolizes the many values that Daniel Yvinec holds dear, and that are inherent to the artistic approach he has used with his ONJ since 2009. Piazzolla's works are the perfect exploration playground for an orchestra accustomed to in-depth examination of sound, colour, individual and group playing that advocates open jazz far from parochial and stylistic concerns. Daniel Yvinec worked closely on the conception of this new repertoire with the brilliant musician and arranger, Gil Goldstein. Their work focuses on the melodies and rhythm developed throughout the Argentinean master's works, as much as it does on Piazzolla's bandoneon playing - the essential components that give this music its very special flavour. Piazzolla! by the ONJ celebrates the diversity of this music, offering a new and audacious reading full of surprise.

Bright And Sweet VIRGINIE TEYCHENÉ This album confirms it, Virginie Teychené is a musician with a voice. She strolls through her imaginary museum dedicated to jazz singer-songwriters and brings her own light to each of its rooms. A grazing light in Familiar Dream, a bright light in Tight, the light of dawn in I'm Gonna Go Fishing and that of dusk in Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. The contributions of her co-musicians are intense due to their restraint; Gérard Maurin's weightless double-bass arrangements, Stéphane Bernard's chiaroscuro piano playing, Jean-Pierre Arnaud's dance-like drumming, and last but not least, Éric Le Lann's inspired trumpet playing, all make Bright and Sweet an exemplary jazz album, where all the miniatures that make it up are in fact merely beginnings.

Double Rainbow VIRGINIE TEYCHENÉ To celebrate this young French jazz singer's signing to Jazz Village, the label re-releases her first two albums - Portraits and I Feel So Good - under the collective title Double Rainbow. "Dark and yet luminous, nostalgic and joyful, Virginie Teychené's voice generates a feeling of elation. In a climate of exultation, the young singer and the musicians avoid the temptations of a grotesque imitation or on the other hand of artificial originality.

So this is a Jazz record belonging to an untimely art form rarely given media coverage to. Here, vocal expression is deliberately cleared of all fioriture so that it can reach the essential and reveal the subtleties of the music. That is what seduces the most. With a disarming sobriety, tutelary Jazz figures are brought to mind (composers such as Billy Stayhorn, Charles Mingus and Antonio Carlos Jobin but also improvisators: Chet Baker, Eddie Jefferson, James Moody…) and as an indirect consequence, the sketch of a self-portrait stands out, the one of a Jazz singer." Blue Skies CASSANDRA WILSON With her new album Another Country riding high in the Jazz Charts, here is a timely re-issue of an early work originally out on JMT in 1989. Blue Skies is the third album of Cassandra Wilson, the Mississippi-born New Yorker. In this third production under her name she has dug deeply into the rich mine of jazz standards and brought to the surface tunes that are classic yet not overstrained. Cassandra moves in the area of jazz standards with the same ease as in her own music represented by her first two albums, never failing to put her own stamp on the music. Her vocals are artful instead of artificial, forceful instead of forced, and there is no fooling around with unnecessary ornamentation, every note is sincere and getting down to the point.

Love Lost and Found Again LAVERNE BUTLER New Orleans-born Laverne Butler's voice exudes an established confidence and impeccable taste. Eschewing scatological pyrotechnics, she relies instead on nuances, caressing syllables and imbuing all sorts of speculative meaning into rests in a most sensuous, though never sensationalistic, way. With her accompanist-Music Director Bruce Barth, LaVerne turns her attentions to a group of standards and jazz tunes that highlight not just her sexy ribbon of a voice, but which also give her accompanying quartet plenty of space to show their wares. Featuring the deeply burnished tenor sax of Houston Person floating his patented dark-toned arabesques like filé in the gumbo, and Barth's interesting harmonic sense, LaVerne Butler's impressive debut on HighNote Records is a true jazz-vocal record in every sense of the phrase. Naturally HOUSTON PERSON Houston Person, after more time in the recording studio than perhaps any other tenor player, has become something of a jazz institution. Learning his craft at a time when some of the earliest pioneers of jazz saxophone – Coleman Hawkins, Sidney Bechet, Lester Young, Ben Webster – were playing, he was able to develop his own unique sound and voice which acknowledged these iconic men without ever resorting to imitation. Person is an eloquent messenger from a jazz landscape firmly rooted in the blues, church music, the great American song composers and the vocalist-like communication of a song's meaning through the saxophone. For his latest HighNote recording Houston has asked legendary pianist Cedar Walton to sit in on the date and the collaboration between these two giants results in some of the most genuinely musical playing to come out of the famed Rudy Van Gelder studio. If it is ostentatious show that floats your boat, look elsewhere. Though the formidable chops of each member of the quartet are evident in every phrase, technique is completely at the service of the music on the set list, never for showboating or cheap effect.

Pray Fi Di People LP version U ROY The Jamaican reggae legend returns to the world stage with a new album: Pray Fi Di People after 10 years absence from the studio. This is a musical and cultural event not to be missed! Pray Fi Di People reaffirms the talent of the toaster with a Jamaican roots sound. U-Roy is the man most responsible for putting the DJ (or MC - 'mic chanter') on the map, both as recording artist in Jamaica and as a major indirect influence on the US rappers. As such his importance is immense. Born Ewart Beckford, 1942, in Kingston, Jamaica, U-Roy began as a sound system DJ in 1961. Around 1967 he began to work with King Tubby as DJ for his Home Town Hi-Fi. From this association developed the whole modern DJ style: with U-Roy's gruff tones and distinctive yelp causing a sensation chanting over Tubby's newly conceived dub versions. He then began his recording career in full, recording for Lee Perry, Keith Hudson, Duke Reid and a host of others, a career which has resulted in over 50 album releases and countless singles. His UK success was assured with a succession of releases in the 1970s on Virgin's Frontline label.

Throw Down Your Arms PROFESSOR Live album and DVD recorded at the Reggae Sun Ska Festival 2011. In 2011 Harrison « Professor » Stafford - Groundation’s vocal and spiritual leader - was recording Madness, his first side project. This very personal album was the result of meetings and discussions he had during his travels in Israel and Palestine. He tells us : « The idea to record this album came from decisive discussions I had in Ramallah with an Arabic poet. He told me that he knew reggae music and mentioned Bob Marley particularly. I was surprised to hear that he didn’t like reggae music because of the negative message it conveyed. I was stunned. I never heard somebody associate Marley’s music to something other than positive vibrations and positive messages. The poet told me : « let me ask you something : why reggae music is so Zionist in his message ? » Wahoo, everything became clearest to me ! »
