MOZART: Gran Partita Serenade No. 10 for winds K361

LSO Wind Ensemble

Label: LSO Live File Under: Classical/Orchestral Catalogue No: LSO5075 Barcode: 822231507529 MID Price Format: 1 SACD Packaging: cristal LSO Wind Ensemble Recorded live in DSD 128fs October 2015 at LSO St Luke's, London

A sprightly interpretation of Mozart’s intriguing 'Gran Partita', this release celebrates the wealth of talent in the London Symphony Orchestra’s wind section with an ensemble that includes Italian bass clarinetist Lorenzo Iosco, renowned clarinettist Andrew Marriner and celebrated young oboist Olivier Stankiewicz. Captured live during Sound Unbound 2015, the Barbican’s first ‘classical weekender’, the recording is supported by Bowers & Wilkins and took place in the Jerwood Hall of LSO St Luke’s. For this album, the ensemble was led Lorenzo Iosco, who played with the Orchestra for six years before joining the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He says of the work: "It’s so simple what [Mozart] writes, but at the same time so beautiful and so clear...All the seven movements are fantastic, my favourite is the third movement, because the way it starts and how it’s built is absolutely amazing. But all the movements have beautiful melodies, it’s a masterpiece!" Mozart’s sublime ‘serenade for thirteen Winds’ may have been dedicated to his bride Constanze, and it may even have been played at their wedding celebrations in 1782, fitting the occasion with its ambitious scoring and sense of amplitude. It consists of seven movements and why Mozart decided to ignore symphonic convention is unknown. 'Gran Partita', which was found scribbled on the original manuscript, essentially means ‘big wind symphony’ and it is scored for 13-piece wind section: unusually large for the era. It isn’t one of Mozart’s most intricate scores, but its sensuousness and variety are unsurpassed. 1 Largo-Molto allegro | 2 Menuetto. Trios | 3 Adagio | 4 Menuetto: Allegretto. Trios 5 Romance | Theme and Variations | 7 Finale "A sublime musician with a liquid technique. An orchestral player without equal, British-born Andrew Marriner is a musical conjurer whose sleight-of-hand style makes everything look deceptively easy." Classic FM on Andrew Marriner "The Prelude [Le Tombeau de Couperin] was notable for being daringly fast, especially hazardous for the principal oboist, Olivier Stankiewicz, who played his socks off in the very tricky and unidiomatic writing from the outset" BachTrack on Oliver Stankiewicz

Perfido! Concert arias by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven

Sophie Bevan, The Mozartists / Ian Page Described by the Observer as 'dazzling', leading British soprano Sophie Bevan performs a sumptuous programme of concert arias by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. Bevan is accompanied on this new recording by The Mozartists, recently launched by Ian Page’s internationally renowned period ensemble Classical Opera as an expansion of its continuing exploration of Mozart and his contemporaries. Complementing Classical Opera’s ongoing recording series of the complete operas of Mozart, the creation of The Mozartists reflects the group’s expanding repertoire and ambitious plans, and they can be heard in concert from September 2017.

Drawing outstanding playing, he makes every note and inflexion count, his acute perception apparent throughout a performance that crackles with an intensity never achieved at the expense of obscuring orchestral detail or lyrical warmth.” Opera, January 2017 [Mozart, Zaide, SIGCD473] “...Sophie Bevan, who just seems to be getting better and better. Always one of our most promising young singers, she has now developed a stronger and fruitier voice than I have heard before and it blends perfectly” The Express, 21 December 2016

LECLAIR: Violin Concertos Op 7 - Nos 1, 3, 4 & 5 Paris, c.1737

Fabio Biondi Europa Galante

Label: Glossa File Under: Classical/Orchestral Catalogue No: GCD923407 Barcode: 8424562234079 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Fabio Biondi [solo violin & direction] Europa Galante

Jean-Marie Leclair epitomised the idea of an 18th-century virtuoso-composer, one whose compositional output largely reflects his activity as a performer. Whilst the French school possessed precursors such as Jean-FÊry Rebel, it is very much to Leclair that it owes its genuine development. The virtuoso violinist became a highly sought-after teacher, and a full generation of musicians were recipients of his teaching. Leclair published twelve concertos for violin in two sets, Op 7 (c.1737) and Op 10 (c.1743). The Op 7 collection, of which four concertos have been included in this recording, is without doubt partially made up of works which Leclair performed at the Concert Spirituel between 1728 and 1736. Today, we are aware of the style employed by Leclair in his violin playing through his own writings and concert reviews from the time. His uncompromising ideal of performance is of a truly Appolonian nature: precision and integrity in execution, economy with the use of effects, accurate intonation and nobility of expression – all features brought to this new recording by Fabio Biondi and his already legendary ensemble, Europa Galante. The scholar Louis Castelain of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles provides the booklet notes. 01-03 Violin Concerto Op 7 no 3 in C major 04-06 Violin Concerto Op 7 no 4 in F major 07-09 Violin Concerto Op 7 no 5 in A minor 10-12 Violin Concerto Op 7 no 1 in D minor

De FALLA: El Amor Brujo The essence of Manuel de Falla’s music

Euskal Barrokensemble - Enrike Solinís Following the album 'Euskal Antiqua', this new release by Enrike Solinis in the series Alia Vox Diversa offers new insight on the Spanish traditional music through a masterpiece by Manuel de Falla: The Enchanted Love (El Amor Brujo). In this ballet, Spanish tradition and classical music are intimately linked and Solinis’ new approach - on baroque instruments makes the essence of De Falla’s music perfectly audible. In addition to De Falla’s work, the Euskal Barrokensemble performs other pieces inspired by fertile encounters between popular and classical music. This sheds new light on well known masterpieces like the famous 'Concerto de Aranjuez' by Rodrigo or Scarlatti's Sonatas.

It all forms a most engaging start to the series” Gramophone Magazine, October 2016

Zelenka: Sonatas ZWV181 a 2 oboi (violino) e 2 bassi obligati

Collegium 1704 Václav Luks Zelenka’s sonatas are exceptional works in the repertoire of Baroque chamber music, but because of their great difficulty, they appear only occasionally in concert programmes. Recordings of these sonatas are equally rare. The last complete recording of all six sonatas on historical instruments was made over 20 years ago by Ensemble Zefiro in 1993, so this new recording by the Prague-based ensemble Collegium 1704, known for their excellent Zelenka interpretations and recordings, has been eagerly awaited!

Meraviglia d'amore Marco Beasley Private Musicke / Pierre Pitzl The programme of this disc brings together pieces by Italian authors from the first half of the 17th century, both vocal and instrumental pieces, here performed by a period guitar ensemble. Many of the included works are signed by lesser-known composers, such as Antonio Carbonchi, Biagio Marini, Michaelangelo Galilei, or Angelo Michele Bartolotti, but the disc also includes pieces by Girolamo Kapsberger, one of the most famous theorbo players of his time, and Francesco Corbetta, “the greatest guitar player”, according to his contemporary Gaspar Sanz. The songs presented on this recording centre on love, moving in a labyrinth which includes hope, sorrow, optimism, disappointment and joy. Marco Beasley is a specialist in 17th-century vocal music and has some fine recordings to his name. His light and agile voice is excellently suited to these fine Italian delights of the early Baroque period. He is accompanied by Private Musicke under the direction of Pierre Pitzl, great experts in this kind of repertoire.
