Dawar The Universal Rhythm

TRIO CHEMIRANI In 2015, harmonia mundi will launch Latitudes, a new series dedicated to ‘world classical music’. Just as in the recent decades there has been a new approach towards the early music and baroque repertoires, Latitudes will be dedicated to recording musicians who, though they operate within the framework of traditional music, bring a new light to their art. Not so much that they adapt traditional music instruments to world music rhythms; rather that they open the repertoire up in a way similar to avant-garde composers in the western tradition: their intention is not to challenge the musical traditions of their own countries, on the contrary, they wish to enrich it with their invention and endless creativity. Not only are they bringing something new, they are allowing us to find a new meaning in the universal quest for absolute artistic integrity and a poetic vision with universal appeal which reaches beyond the barriers of language and genre - an awakening!

40 years after his first solo recording for harmonia mundi, Djamchid Chemirani (born in Tehran in 1942) has continued to develop his career, aided by his two sons, Kevyan and Bijan. They have each nourished their craft as musicians by exploring a variety of sound worlds and introducing different cultural and life experiences to the mix. However, they always return to their common goal: to create a universal rhythmic language. Dawâr is the pinnacle of this journey; never have the Chemirani’s had such a limpid sound, born from the close fusion of their drum beats; it is through the jubilant awareness of the work they create together, that they achieve the spiritual transcendence so highly regarded within Iranian culture. Burundi - Traditional Music VARIOUS ARTISTS A classic of African ethnomusicology and a cornerstone of the Radio France Ocora catalogue - although bewilderingly out of print for many years - the original LP release in 1968 has long been a favourite in the blogosphere. "Part of Ocora's extensive traditional music line, this album of music from Burundi attempts to present some of the salient examples of musical traditions in the old Kingdom. Some of the music is really quite amazing in the way that it can be both incredibly simple, but at the same time mesmerizing. There are demonstrations of native inanga zithers, ubuhuha vocal techniques, drum troupes, whispered singing techniques, musical bows, & ritualized greetings." Nothin' Sez Somethin' blog

Sirventes Occitan Protest Songs

Manu THÉRON / Youssef HBEISCH / Grégory DARGENT Provençal singer Manu Théron, founder of the polyphonic group Le Cor de la Plana, has here convened a new assembly for an album of Occitan protest songs based in the historic Thirteenth century poetic art of Trobar, the lyrical exultation of which reflects the vitality of Occitan society of yore. Grégory Dargent (from L'Hijaz' Car) displays his musical acumen on the oud, while the Palestinian percussionist Youssef Hbeisch (Trio Joubran, Ibrahim Maalouf, Bratsch) once again dazzles with his propulsive rhythms.

Louisiana - Cajun Music BOBBY MICHOT A re-issue of the "Gone Back" album originally released in the USA in 2012. Bobby Michot, from Lafayette, Louisiana, was a member of Les Freres Michot and the Mamou Prairie Band, and has toured the UK several times with The Cajun Voyageurs, Eddie LeJeune and others. "When Cajun musicians often talk about playing it the old way, they mean music played in an accordion-fiddle or accordion-fiddle-guitar configuration. Bobby Michot’s solo debut is a good example of this ilk, because it legitimately feels like it’s from 1929-1930 without the distracting pops and scratches time leaves on old 78s. He plays both sides of the accordion, especially the challenging left-hand side where all the honking, funky bass notes reside. Additionally, he loves screechy fiddle drones that, along with the squeezebox’s bass side, are techniques not prevalent in today’s music that add a vibrant, rhythmic thrust.

Nearly all of the selections were first waxed during Cajun music’s recording infancy, and a few originated with obscurer practitioners Adam Trahan, Slim Doucet and Freres Guidry. Two tracks were recorded in France, where Michot summers, and feature a hurdy-gurdy in the arrangement that nudges old-time Cajun and old world, medieval French music closer together. Michot also plants two originals in the proceedings—“Empty Bottle Revolution,” which feels more like a Celtic rock anthem with Michael Barney’s uilleann pipes, and the wheezy, rollicking “Gone Back Shuffle,” where Michot’s protagonist yearns for home." Spiritman STEVE TURRE Steve Turre, one of the world’s pre-eminent jazz innovators, releases Spiritman, his debut recording for Smoke Sessions Records. It’s something of a back-to-basics project for Turre who says, “It’s the first record I’ve done in a long time that really focuses on my trombone playing.” It also employs an ideal foil in saxophonist Bruce Williams whose timbre on soprano and alto is a perfect match for the trombone.

Label: Smoke Sessions File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: SSR1502 Barcode: 888295177320 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Steve Turre - trombone & seashells Bruce Williams - alto & soprano saxophones Xavier Davis - piano Gerald Cannon - bass Willie Jones III - drums plus special guest Chembo Corniel - congas on “Nangadef” only

Spiritman features several of Turre’s new compositions including "Trayvon's Blues" a poignant, moving, jazz tone poem; "Bu" the record opener dedicated to his mentor Art Blakey; "Funky Thing" written for the Saturday Night Live Band; and "Nangadef" written for Senegalese percussionist Abdou Mboup and featuring Chembo Corniel on congas. His spirited rendition of Miles Davis’ “All Blues” begins with his own mystical "Spiritman" played on shells. It’s a piece he performed to open the UN's International Jazz Day concert in Osaka, Japan in 2014. This “All Blues” introduction is also the first recording of a newly developed technique where Turre plays into a piano with the pedal down and the strings open. The shell’s sound vibrates the open strings creating an ethereal, mystical, but acoustic sound. The rest of the band, Xavier Davis, Gerald Cannon, and Willie Jones III, know just what Turre wants and needs from a rhythm section and they help deliver this unforgettable music that also includes swinging standards and classic ballads. It’s music designed to make you feel better. Track listing: 1. Bu (Steve Turre) 6:40 2. Lover Man (Jimmy Davis, Ram Ramirez, and James Sherman) 6:29 3. Funky Thing (Steve Turre) 5:50 4. Philadelphia Beat Albert 'Tootie' HEATH / Ethan IVERSON / Ben STREET One of Philadelphia’s prominent sons is the fantastic drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath. He, like so many other Philly natives including his brothers Jimmy and Percy, grew up in the music, as the city was ripe with musicians of the first order and an important stop for many of the progenitors of the music. On his new recording – Philadelphia Beat - Heath returns to his native ground to catch the spirit and preserve it. Joining Heath, on their third recording as a trio, are pianist Ethan Iverson and bassist Ben Street. Iverson is best known for his work with the lauded collaborative trio The Bad Plus but has also been an invaluable member of groups led by Billy Hart and Lee Konitz, among others. Street has long been a first call bassist for many of the leading lights in the music, including David Sanchez, Danilo Pérez and Kurt Rosenwinkel, and always joins Iverson in the Billy Hart quartet. For the recording, the trio brought a diverse program of standards and a couple of not so standards. The performances show the ensemble’s ability to draw new concepts from well-loved pieces, being contemporary without ignoring the past.

The Origin of Adjustable Things JOANNA WALLFISCH with DAN TEPFER Hailed by the great Fred Hersch as “a real discovery — a first-rate musician in every way,” British vocalist Joanna Wallfisch has built an impressive profile since her move to New York from London in 2012. She takes a bold step forward in her creative journey with The Origin of Adjustable Things, a stark and expressive duo album with rising piano master Dan Tepfer. In the mysterious poetry of her lyrics, the freshness of her harmonic choices and the expansiveness of her sonic palette, Wallfisch sets a high bar as she and Tepfer explore a musical universe of their own making. While the album’s main focus is voice and piano, there are varied sonic elements—pump organ, Wurlitzer, Mellotron, live-looped vocal harmonies—that bring out the full richness of Wallfisch’s compositional approach. Her 2012 debut, Wild Swan, featured a full band with accomplished jazz players Rob Garcia, Sam Newsome and Joe Martin, yet The Origin of Adjustable Things, with just two musicians, manages to sound as texturally involved.

Over and Out DMITRY BAEVSKY You can hear it loud and clear in his music: Dmitry Baevsky is here! The Russian born alto saxophonist has made quite a name for himself since immigrating to New York from his St. Petersburg birthplace nearly twenty years ago. Now a charter member of the world jazz community, Baevsky has proven himself to be a formidable force to be reckoned with, confirming his prodigious abilities in countless appearances with some of the music’s greatest artists. From his very first recording with NEA Jazz Masters Cedar Walton and Jimmy Cobb the altoist has shown himself to be an important new voice on his instrument. Possessing a robust sound, acute harmonic mind and keen sense of rhythm, the young horn man puts it all together in a manner that is appealing in its lyricism, yet intriguing in its originality. On his four previous efforts as a leader Baevsky has appeared in the traditional jazz quartet/quintet configuration. On this fifth outing he has chosen to expose his talent to the greater scrutiny of the trio format.

Sings + 2 Bonus Tracks

CHET BAKER LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING INCLUDES FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD The music on this LP put Chet Baker on the scene not just as a brilliant trumpeter, but also as a talented singer. The original 10” LP Chet Baker Sings (Pacific Jazz JLP-11) was a revelation at the time and won Baker new fame and a new audience, which was more familiar with pop music than jazz. The reasons are quite clear: Chet’s voice is tender and beautiful, and at the same time his phrasing always swings and surprises. This release presents the cover from the original Brazilian LP edition of Chet Baker Sings (Musidisc Jazz-101).

While Gary Burton would become one of the preeminent jazz vibraphonists, his career was just getting started at the time this album (his debut LP as a leader) was made, Burton was just 18! But make no mistake, these recordings prove that the vibraphonist had already accomplished the most difficult task for any jazz musician –the attainment of a wholly individual voice. While he cited Milt Jackson as his favorite vibraphonist at this stage of his career, Burton never sought to imitate him, and his style is considerably different from the already established giants of the instrument: Lionel Hampton, Red Norvo and Milt Jackson. Even at such an early age, Burton displays his remarkable four-mallet technique on these recordings. The technique allows Burton to fully express his modern harmonic sense and frequently results in the vibraphonist sounding like two or three players at once. His ability for ceaseless melodic invention is also plainly evident throughout these recordings as is his strong sense of swing and advanced rhythmic concept. On the same day that his album Nice ‘n’ Easy first entered the Billboard chart, Frank Sinatra was back in the Capitol Tower recording the first session of what would become one of his most celebrated albums, Sinatra’s Swingin’ Session (Capitol SW1491). It would prove to be the fastest paced and hardest swinging LP in his discography. Half of the album consists of a re-recording of six of the eight songs from his Columbia album, Sing and Dance with Frank Sinatra, rearranged here by the great Nelson Riddle (these songs consist of “It’s Only a Paper Moon”, “My Blue Heaven”, “It All Depends on You”, “You Do Something to Me”, “Should I” and “When You’re Smiling”). Of the remaining six songs, “Always” and “S’posin’” were first recorded in 1946 and 1947, respectively, and issued as singles, and “I Concentrate on You” was first recorded in 1950 and released on the album Songs by Sinatra, while “Blue Moon”, “September in the Rain”, and “I Can’t Believe that You’re in Love with Me” were recorded by Frank for the first time ever during the sessions for this LP.
