Joby TALBOT: Path of Miracles Owain PARK: Footsteps Tenebrae Award-winning professional vocal ensemble, Tenebrae mark their 15th anniversary season with a celebratory re-release of Joby Talbot’s 'Path of Miracles', as well as the premiere recording of a new work by Owain Park. Inspired by the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, 'Path of Miracles' has quickly become a contemporary classic among choral music fans. Tenebrae commissioned British composer Owain Park to compose his new work 'Footsteps' as a companion piece to 'Path of Miracles', and one which allows Tenebrae to perform alongside choirs near its touring locations.

A note from Owain: “I was delighted to be asked by Nigel to write a piece for Tenebrae to be performed alongside Path of Miracles. Tenebrae’s recording of Joby’s piece is one of my absolute favourites; I remember being bowled over by the instrumental quality of the opening and the combination of ancient chant with the composer’s own modern voice. When I met with Nigel we spoke about the possibilities for this new work; it would need to be much shorter than Path of Miracles, but hopefully contain many complimentary themes, namely travel, solitude and journeying. Footsteps is the result of many months of researching texts to structure a narrative that cycles the seasons through the view of a lonely traveller who is constantly being moved on before being allowed to settle, finding comfort in the sky and stars above.” 1 Owain PARK: Footsteps Joby TALBOT: Path of Miracles 2 Roncesvalles | 3 Burgos | 4 Leon | 5 Santiago Praise for the original release of Path of Miracles: “After the eerie opening effect - a glissandi, Taiwanese style, bursting into the pilgrims hymn from Dum Pater Familias - you know you are about to embark on a remarkable musical journey ... The music weaves together diverse themes and styles encompassing sparse, clear writing with subtle use of harmony portraying the text ... It is a tour de force and absolutely stunning.” Choir and Organ “a real achievement.” International Record Review

' Chopin', is the major new album from acclaimed British pianist Ivana Gavric, released on Edition Classics. With three highly successful albums behind her, on Champs Hill Records, her new disc explores her Slavic roots and focuses with a clarity and intensity on that mightiest of all composers for piano, Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin. 'Chopin' is a highly personal album for Ivana, as she explains: "the pervasive nostalgia of the Mazurkas speaks to me the most. My own heritage probably also explains my attraction to their Eastern European-inspired song. I have the fondest memories of dancing around my grandmother’s kitchen to tapes of polkas and mazurkas which she had brought back from a trip to Poland. Likewise of hearing my mother play many of the pieces featured on this album." Focussing on the early Mazurkas - she stops in 1838 - for their charming more-rustic and less-stylistic qualities, Ivana adds: "I have decided not to present them in chronological order, but, rather, to mirror the contour of a recital - which hopefully will cast a spotlight on some of the lesser known numbers". 'Chopin' looks set to reinforce her formidable reputation and to become one of the most vital albums from a British artist this year. With high profile concert activity, including two performances at the prestigious Wigmore Hall in 2017, Edition Classics is proud to collaborate with a truly unique talent, in a career that goes from strength to strength. 1. Liszt, Love and Afterlife A Liszt Recital
Dejan Lazic
Label: ONYX File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: ONYX4179 Barcode: 880040417927 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Dejan Lazic [piano]
Dejan Lazic; on this, his first album for ONYX, pays tribute to a composer and his legacy as a piano virtuoso, organist, improviser, arranger, conductor, teacher, author, philanthropist and traveller. Liszt lived life to the full, and this recital captures that love of life, his genius as a pianist and composer, a traveller with a restless and curious mind. Liszt’s respect for the music of other composers is to be found in his arrangements for piano of orchestral, operatic and other vocal works. From Wagner’s operas to Schubert Lieder via Beethoven Symphonies, his deep love for the music is apparent and such arrangements gave this music a wider audience in both the salons and domestic settings that lives on today. "Embarking on a recording project like this obviously required a substantial amount of preparation time. But once the date has come it was of a tremendous importance to capture and to honour the spontaneity of Liszt’s versatile, eclectic, and revolutionary genius", writes Dejan in his introduction to the recital, captured at a live performance at Hohenhems, and one further day in studio conditions. HANDEL: Water Music HWH348-350 Festspielorchester Göttingen Laurence Cummings Countless richly decorated boats following the freshly crowned King George I, and behind him, Georg Friedrich Handel with his 50 musicians and the royal household: on July 17, 1717, the first suite of Handel's famous 'Water Music' was performed in the middle of the Thames. His Majesty took such pleasure in the music of the famous Handel that he had it repeated three times, twice before and once after dinner, although every performance lasted an hour. The boats full of people who wanted to listen were not to be counted. The 'Water Music' is still one of Händel's most popular works. It is therefore not surprising that the Festival Orchestra Göttingen admitted it into its programme for its 10th anniversary in 2016. Conductor Laurence Cummings followed this arrangement of the single movements, as can be gleaned from recently discovered early sources.

Bach, Telemann: Effervescence concertante Ensemble Amarillis / Héloïse Gaillard & Violaine Cochard
Label: Evidence Classics File Under: Classical/Chamber music Catalogue No: EVCD032 Barcode: 3149028109320 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack
"The idea of this program is to feature concertos for several ensemble instruments in a variety of sound combinations. For example, Telemann's Concerto for flute and recorder is a response to Bach's Concerto for violin and oboe. Telemann chooses the four-movement form, thereby recalling the old sonata da chiesa, whereas Bach adopts the three-movement form created by Vivaldi. The Concerto for harpsichord in F major BWV 1057 is a retranscription Bach himself made of his Fourth Brandenburg Concerto for a command performance in Leipzig. Like other composers of the baroque period, Bach saw no harm in recycling themes or even whole pieces, tweaking them as he wished. The personalities of both of these composers blossom fully with the concertante form. Although they adopt different structures, both show their mastery of the form... Justifiably, they have become true baroque music 'hits'. For a present-day performer, these two figures are complementary. With the musicians of Amarillis, we wanted to bring out and enhance each one’s rhythmic élan, sensibility, and formal inventiveness. Both of them led us to surpass the limits of each instrument, making them resonate together and speak with the same eloquence. Let us hope that this effervescence, which carried us throughout this recording, is infectious!" Héloïse Gaillard 1-3 J. S BACH: Concerto in C min BWV1060a 4-7 G. P. Exiles Ophélie Gaillard Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the United States, a democracy concerned with human rights, attracted emigrants of all origins. The young nation embodied a land free from repression for the composers brought together here by Ophélie Gaillard in the spirit of humanism. After 'Alvorada', her globe-trotting cello leads us in the footsteps of Bloch, Korngold, Prokofiev, Chava Alberstein and Giora Feidmann, singing their exile. She gives us a film score (Korngold's Concerto), a prayer (From Jewish Life), an Hebraic narrative (Schelomo), a lullaby, a wedding dance... The spirit of celebration, tenderness, religious meditation: so many facets of daily life and the culture of several generations of Jewish immigrants.

Exile endured or deliberately chosen by the different composers on this programme is quite real geographically and can be explained by multiple causes. But even for one who has never had to feel such an upheaval in his or her flesh, exile can also be inner. It can strike each of us and often even give rise to a liveliness of thinking in us, an inner world of unsuspected richness and an astonishing faculty of memory." Arrangements or Transfigurations
Whether merely copying, or else adapting, transcribing (for piano), changing key, style, instrumentation or orchestration – musical arrangement is common outside the world of classical music. Here is a world premiere by contemporary Czech composer Kryštof Martaka, whose string quartet arrangement of 'Mladi', Janácek’s wind sextet has virtually become his master’s 3rd Quartet. Are these works merely ‘in the style of’ or genuine transfigurations, along the lines of Schoenberg’s famous Transfigured Night Op. 4, itself an orchestration of a poem by Richard Dehmel? Judge for yourselves!

Victoria de Los Angeles: Fauré, Debussy, Ravel FAURE: Requiem, DEBUSSY: La Damoiselle élue RAVEL: Shéhérazade, 5 mélodies populaires grecques Fauré’s Requiem, displays in its seven ‘stations’ not a path of affliction and agony, but a joyful resurrection. Curiously its harmonies fit comfortably into the Fauve atmosphere of 'La Damoiselle Elue' and Ravel's 'Scheherezade'. Finally all negativity is dispelled by the vivaciousness of amorous angels in the Greek Mélodies. It is hard to imagine a more purely beautiful voice than that of Victoria de los Angeles at the height of her career in the 1950s and early 1960s. Combined with charm and a delightful persona her enchanting voice is by turns seraphic, disquieting and limpid in timbre, recorded in Paris and Boston 1955-63. A fitting tribute from Praga Digitals to the much-loved lyric soprano who died in 2005.

SCHEIDT: Sacred Concertos I Sonatori Along with his colleagues Schütz and Schein, Samuel Scheidt belongs to the 'three great Schs', whose compositions spread from Middle Germany and influenced early German baroque. Whereas Schütz was rediscovered from the end of the 19th century and even more so over the course of the 20th century, Schein and Scheidt are still not widely known. Apart from two years of study with Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck in Amsterdam, Scheidt spent his entire life in his native city of Halle. He became court organist in 1609 and court conductor 10 years later. Despite the ravages of the Thirty Years’ War and resulting sieges, epidemics, and little means of earning money, Scheidt managed to get the majority of his compositions printed and widely distributed. The Ensemble I Sonatori and the tenor Knut Schoch present a selection of religious concerts from all through the liturgical year. They offer a pleasant insight into the vocal religious works of this hitherto little-known contemporary of Heinrich Schütz.

Mozart, Clementi Vanessa Wagner Ever since her first Mozart disc in 2000, the French pianist Vanessa Wagner has wanted to make another recording of his music. Her ‘encounter’ with Clementi stimulated her to do so and to bring together on a single disc these two composers who have so often been compared. Since 2008 she has also played the fortepiano in concert which has opened a new door in her musical itinerary. She enjoys the technique it calls for, the attitude required of the musician confronted with these fragile instruments, the intimate sound it produces, the nostalgic charm it exudes. To alternate between instruments seemed natural to her, and she now does so as often as possible in concert. Vanessa Wagner has always tried to create her own career path, a trajectory that seems natural, free and coherent to her. This disc exemplifies her approach.

CHOPIN: Les Grandes Polonaises Pascal Amoyel
“Tempestuous, almost orchestral accounts of Chopin’s best known Polonaises from a pianist with a strong affinity for this music. The closely recorded programme culminates with a sweeping Polonaise-Fantasie, Op. 61.” BBC Music Magazine This [under the title 'Polonia'] was the pianist Pascal Amoyel's third recording for La Dolce Volta after his much acclaimed Alkan and Liszt discs. He gave an interpretation of the great Polonaises as metaphors of the Polish diaspora: of exile, sorrow and despair. The 'Polonaise-Fantaisie', a synthesis of all the others, closes this sumptuous recording, now repackaged as a Catalogue CD 2017 at mid price.
