Chaal Baby Red Baraat In just over two short years, the pioneering Brooklyn dhol ‚n‘ brass party juggernaut Red Baraat have made a name for themselves as one of the best live bands playing anywhere in the world. Led by dhol drummer Sunny Jain, the nine piece comprised of dhol (double-sided barrel shaped North Indian drum slung over one shoulder) drumset, percussion, a sousaphone and five horns melds infectious North Indian rhythms with a host of sounds, namely funk, go-go, latin, and jazz. Simply put, Sunny Jain and Red Baraat have created and defined a sound entirely their own. It’s a sound so powerful it has left the band in its own utterly unique and enviable class. These days you are as likely to find Red Baraat throwing down at an overheated and unannounced warehouse party in their Brooklyn neighborhood as you are at Lincoln Center. Or the Montreal Jazz Festival. Or the Barbican. It’s a band unquestionably on the ascent playing some of the most prestigious festivals and theatres worldwide, and keeping their chops razor sharp in basements and sweaty sold out clubs across New York City. Leading an audience as diverse and joyful as the band itself, Red Baraat has subsumed a plateful of global influence, fused it, and is now exporting it Brooklyn-style to the world.

Kel Tamasheq Terakaft In the language of the Sahara the name of the group Terakaft, founded in Mali in 2001, means caravan and Kel Tamasheq refers to those who speak Tamasheq, meaning the Tuareg People. Electric riffs swirl, twirl and prance through these songs that far from stereotypical clichés, recount the story of an authentic people. British guitarist and producer Justin Adams captures the trance-like motion that feeds Terakaft's blues-soaked desert-rock, music that is also the hallmark of Africa's last remaining nomads. For the first time Terakaft have invited musicians to record with them on Kel Tamasheq. Nadia & Yamina Nid El Mourid, vocalists from Lo’Jo, sing on Alma Ymaïma. Richard Bourreau, also from Lo’Jo (who are old friends), plays the imzad, the Tuareg string violin, on the title track of the album. Jean-Louis Livenais plays a guitar glissando on Adounia Awa and Justin Adams plays guitars and some percussion too.

Kel Tamasheq, Terakaft’s fourth record, is a tribute to the suffering of the Tuareg people. For decades, the desert guitarists have documented their despair, following the trail-blazing Tinariwen (from whose ranks Terakaft first emerged) – the group who alerted the world to the politics, culture and searing guitars of the western Sahara. Their songs composed by the three guitarists, Liya, Sanou and Abdallah, deal directly with the political and economic problems of their people. “It’s an age favourable to war; the years to come will be full of fury” (‘Imgharen Win Ibda’); “There is no one left because of the violence of war” (‘Idja A Seman’). It’s a difficult message but a timely one as Northern Mali becomes ungovernable and the Ansar Dine Islamist fighters destroy the mud heritage of Timbuktu. Respiro Joe Barbieri Originally from Naples, Joe Barbieri is now an internationally renowned artist, who has performed in over 63 different countries. His new album "Respiro" is a kaleidoscope of different musical styles. Featuring discreetly romantic songs, Barbieri's repertoire runs the gamut between bossa nova, soft jazz, and a smooth, sophisticated and elegant brand of pop. He brings to mind both Gianmaria Testa and Marcio Faraco. "Respiro" was recorded in Naples in an apartment used by Vittorio de Sica to film scenes from two of his most important films: "Matrimonio all'italiana" ("Marriage Italian-style" with Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni) & "L'Oro di Napoli" ("The Gold of Naples" with Sylvana Mangano and Sophia Loren). This detail is much more than a mere anecdote when you are aware of the 'cinematographic' quality of Joe Barbieri's songs, which all seem to be short, well-illustrated scenes that could easily generate as many short films. Features special guests Gianmaria Testa, Jorge Drexler, Stefano Bollani and more

Neck of the Woods Daniel Herskedal & Marius Neset Daniel Herskedal and Marius Neset are two astonishingly gifted and formidable musicians who share a commanding sound, exemplary technique and astonishing musicianship. Together they have created Neck of the Woods, an album that resonates beautifully, combining soaring, uplifting melodies with an extraordinary energy and energising charm. Featuring the rich voices of the Svanholm Singers on three tracks, Neck of the Woods goes far beyond easy categorisation and while resolutely rooted in the Norwegian tradition, the album explores influences from classical and folk music, but always with an underlying jazz sensibility. Since then he has developed a formidable reputation as one of the most exciting musicians to emerge on the European scene in the last decade winning rave reviews for both his album and firepower live performances. Last Spring Bugge Wesseltoft & Henning Kraggerud During a conversation between Act owner Siggi Loch and Norwegian classical violinist Henning Kraggerud, the latter stated his admiration for Bugge Wesseltoft's christmas record "It's snowing on my piano" (ACT's best-selling title, fact fans). So naturally the next step was to bring the two countrymen together, and so it was that they met in November 2011 to record "Last Spring" in Oslo's famous Rainbow Studio, the place where "It's snowing on my piano" was recorded. The pair put together a sparkling program of 16 pieces for "Last Spring", which is founded mostly on Norwegian folk music. As the title intimates, "Last Spring" is a revisiting of spring. It is not an exulting, whirling awakening, but a sustained, minimalistic meditation, oriented strongly towards the details, the variance of the melodies, the breadth and beauty of the sound. It is based on the most perfect interaction possible: Wesseltoft's soft piano daubs melt like wax into the pizzicato melodies that Kraggerud entices out of his 1744 Guarneri violin, his Harald Lund viola and his unique six-stringed viola Concorda.

More Jacob Karlzon 3 Jacob Karlzon’s horizons are wide. This pianist, who was named jazz musician of the year in his native Sweden in 2010 and who became internationally renowned for his long running collaboration with singer Viktoria Tolstoy, loves to work with extremes. This starts with his instrument whose emotional breadth ranges from fragile gentleness to a sense of mighty awe. Besides instrumental ability, a great imagination for modern sounds characterizes Karlzon’s music. He calls it “technorganic” or also “acoustic but electric”. But these are really only means of expression; they are not an end in itself. The “jeans and boots guy” wants to tell stories of experience and dreams; he reveals something of himself, of his delight in music and performance. He does not want to deliver merely technically brilliant fireworks, even though, of course, he delivers these too on his new album “More”, - his ninth CD and the first on the German label ACT.

Norma Deloris Egstrom A Tribute to Peggy Lee
Jessica Pilnas In America Peggy Lee (1920-2002) is one of the great singers of the 20th century, alongside Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. Not only was she a star in jazz circles after having been discovered by Benny Goodman as a twenty-year old, but she was also known by the wider public. Lee is the only singer who had a US top ten single in the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s. She also acted in several films, including the first sound film “The Jazz Singer”, was nominated for an Oscar and appeared on Broadway. It was a life according to the American dream – from a poor young waitress singing in bars to one of the most glamorous entertainers in the American music business.

When label boss Siggi Loch first presented the idea of paying homage to Peggy Lee (and to her little-known Swedish origins), Jessica Pilnäs was instantly excited about it. As with Lee herself, Pilnäs has also remained true to her musical preferences – she has withstood the temptations of a hurried and superficial pop career. In 2000 after releasing her first pop album that sold more than 50 000 copies in Japan, she could have gone in for a career playback singing her hit song ‘Isa”. However, her love for music and for jazz in particular was greater. Instead of becoming a pop star, she studied medicine and remained faithful to her musical ideals. Swedish jazz greats, such as Nils Landgren and Pilnas' husband Johan Norberg, supported her career as a singer. She became a part of Landgren’s ‘Christmas with My Friends’ ensemble and two years ago the time was right for the start of her solo career, with the album “Bitter and Sweet” released on ACT. For the first time Pilnäs could choose her band members and perform the music that had been piling up over the years, and a conceptual album honouring Peggy Lee now follows. 1. Performing the music is Wayne’s new quintet featuring pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Hans Glawischnig, drummer Jason Brown and keyboardist and Miles Davis veteran Adam Holzman. To further add to the uniqueness of this project, Wayne has asked his friend and best selling author of “The Color of Water” James McBride to write the liner notes for the CD jacket. Florian began taking private lessons and by the time he graduated from high school he had participated in both classical and jazz ensembles. Several competition prizes later - including the Steinway & Sons prize at the Montreaux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition in 2001 - he graduated from music school (in Cologne and Berklee). Florian studied with John Taylor, JoAnne Brackeen, Paul Bley, and Richie Beirach. Post-Chromodal Out! Hafez Modirzadeh Post-Chromodal Out! represents the next step in Iranian-American saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh's quest to create a seamless cross-cultural exchange of musical structures between the Persian dastgah and American jazz. Much was put into practice by Modirzadeh along with Iraqi-American trumpeter Amir ElSaffar in their co-led project Radif Suite ("scintillating. a radical cultural exchange" New York Times; "thick with ideas and inspiration" Los Angeles Times). On "Post-Chromodal Out!" Modirzadeh takes the concept one step further by introducing a piano re-tuned to a variation on Persian temperament. Performing this music is the Grammy Award-nominated pianist Vijay Iyer, who takes on the instrument with an improvisatory mastery befitting his own reputation for combining jazz with the music of different cultures. The addition of the re-tuned piano results in music that is like nothing that has been attempted before. It promises to shake Western music's harmonic foundation, while still concentrating on the lyricism and rhythmic sensibility of jazz, a further testament to the transformational potential of this unique American art form.

This is How I Feel About Jazz + The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones Quincy Jones 2 LPs on 1 CD! Two complete original albums by the great Quincy Jones big band, both of which received a five-star rating in Down Beat shortly after they were recorded. This Is How I Feel About Jazz (ABC-Paramount ABC149, recorded in 1956) was Jones’ first LP as a leader. His previous recordings had been mostly as a trumpeter, arranger and/or conductor for other musicians’ orchestras, such as Lionel Hampton, George Wallington and Dizzy Gillespie. The Great Wide World of Quincy Jones (Mercury SR60221) presents the outstanding 1959 Quincy Jones orchestra. As a bonus, the label has added a live version of one of the tunes from the latter LP taped in 1961. Includes 12-page booklet

John Coltrane LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs HIGH-DEFINITION PREMIUM VINYL PRESSING FOR SUPER FIDELITY THE WAY THIS MUSIC WAS MEANT TO BE HEARD 180 gram VINYL –AUDIOPHILE PRESSING On November 23, 1961, critic John A. Tynan, wrote the following statement in Down Beat magazine: “At Hollywood’s Renaissance Club recently, I listened to a horrifying demonstration of what appears to be a growing anti-jazz trend exemplified by these foremost proponents of what is termed avant-garde music. Coltrane and Dolphy seem intent on deliberately destroying swing. I heard a good rhythm section go to waste behind the nihilistic exercises of the two horns. They seem bent on pursuing an anarchistic course in their music that can but be termed anti-jazz.”

The wide range of contrasting opinions between critics is exemplified by the first review of the 1961 Village Vanguard sessions. While a modern critic like Len Lyons included Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard among the 101 best jazz recordings ever in his book that was issued in the ‘80s, the album originally received two different reviews in Down Beat. Ira Gitler gave it a rating of 2 and a half stars, while Pete Welding awarded it 3 and a half. Both critics felt that Side A contained decent music, while Side B, featuring “Chasin’ the Trane” as the only tune, was a “failure”. “One of the noblest failures on record”, stated Welding, acknowledging Trane’s efforts in expanding his own idiom, while Gitler just labelled it as “monotonous, a treadmill to the Kingdom of Boredom”. This is interesting, especially considering that Len Lyons openly says he included Coltrane Live at the Village Vanguard among the 101 best jazz recordings mostly because of “Trane’s sixteen-minute solo on ‘Chasin’ the Trane’, one of his best performances on record”. SIDE A: 1) SPIRITUAL (John Coltrane) 13:50 2) SOFTLY, AS IN A MORNING SUNRISE (Sigmund Romberg-Oscar Hammerstein II) 6:40 SIDE B: 1) CHASIN’ THE TRANE (John Coltrane) 16:12 2) GREENSLEVES (Traditional) 6:26 * * Bonus track from the same sessions, but not on the original LP.

Blue Suede Shoes Carl Perkins This album, dedicated to Carl Perkins, provides the missing link in the famous anthology Rock 'n' Roll Latitude. A singer, guitarist, songwriter and performer, Carl Perkins left his mark and imposed his style on a time which was not exactly short of idols. Without a silly accident which kept him out of action for several months just the wrong time, and without his producers’ ensuing financial worries, Carl Perkins would be as famous today as the King, and the latter (or others like him) wouldn't be credited with the major hits he generously donated to the world of rock. For it's true, "Blue Suede Shoes" was by Carl Perkins, "Honey Don't" was by Carl Perkins and "Pink Pedal Pushers" was by Carl Perkins too!!!
