String Idylls WAGNER: Siegfried Idyll, SCHOENBERG: Verklärte Nacht, MAHLER: Sinfonie No. 10, Adagio, BERG: Lyric Suite, Adagio Appassionato A large string ensemble was the most expressive vehicle for German composers from Wagner to Berg. Used both to narrate and set the scene in operas without words, it may feel somewhat over-sentimental today. This novel line-up, with its clearly operatic feel, has entrancing, even exalting moments despite its morbid undertones. Lovely programming. 1 Wagner: Siegfried Idyll orchestral version, recorded live in Hollywood 27/2/1959, Columbia Symphony Orchestra/Bruno Walter 2-6 Schoenberg: Verklärte Nacht version for string orchestra, recorded Leipzig 1965 7 Mahler: Sinfonie No. 10, recorded Leipzig September 1964 Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra/George Sebastian 8 Berg: Lyric Suite arranged for string orchestra, recorded in New York, June 1961 Columbia Symphony Orchestra/Robert Craft

BEETHOVEN: Symphony 4 Op. 60, SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony 10 Op. 93 Mravinsky in Prague

Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra Yevgeny Mravinsky Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony is 50 minutes of tragedy, despair, terror, and violence and three minutes of triumph. Premiered in 1953, the best performance is still that conducted by Mravinsky. Yevgeny Mravinsky's June 3, 1955, performance with the Leningrad Philharmonic of Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 is just as great. Mravinsky was the best Soviet conductor and his passionate precision and intense interpretations were as valid for Beethoven as they were for Shostakovich. His interpretations can be hard-driven and sharp-edged, but no one could object to the lucid strength and linear lyricism he brings to the work.

SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 15 Op.141, Suite to words by Michelangelo Op.145a, Novorossiisk Chimes Op. 111b Three Last Works

Label: Praga Digitals File Under: Classical/Orchestral Catalogue No: PRD250334 Barcode: 3149028083323 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Czech Philharmonic Orchestra/Eduard Serov Sergei Kopcak [bass] Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra/Frantisek Vajnar Radio-TV USSR Symphony/Arvid Jansons

Ever the humorist, Shostakovich delighted in placing references to his works and of other composers in his final, Fifteenth Symphony: in addition to the cryptic references to his own music, it includes an outburst of Rossini's 'William Tell' Overture in the first movement; allusions to Mikhail Glinka and Gustav Mahler; and the use of Richard Wagner's 'Fate' leitmotif from the Ring Cycle. There is little humour however in the orchestral version of the 'Michelangelo Suite': a cycle profoundly personal and deeply felt. 'Novorossiisk Chimes' (also known as The Flame of Eternal Glory or The Fire of Eternal Glory), Op. 111b, was written in 1960 for the war memorial in the city of Novorossiisk. The piece consists, mainly, of material Shostakovich had originally written in 1943 as an entry in a contest to compose a new national anthem for the USSR. The opening phrases have also been used as introductory music for Moscow Radio's late-night news program CKACWH. 1-4 Symphony live, Prague 29/11/1979 Czech Philharmonic Orchestra/Eduard Serov 5-12 Suite live, Prague May 1980 Sergei Kopcak [bass], Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra/Frantisek Vajnar 13 Novorossiisk Chimes, Novorossiisk, 27/9/1960 Radio-TV USSR Symphony/Arvid Jansons
