PROKOFIEV: Symphonies Nos. 4 Op.47 (1930 version), No.5 Op.100, Dreams Op.6 Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Kirill Karabits The eagerly awaited 3rd volume in the critically acclaimed Prokofiev Symphony cycle from Kirill Karabits and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The original version of the 4th, probably the least performed of the seven is coupled with the 5th, arguably the most performed. The 4th is based on material from the ballet ‘The Prodigal Son’. The symphony was commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky to mark the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The 5th dates from 1944 at the height of the Russian struggle against the Nazi invasion. Although considered a wartime work, the overall mood is one of optimism. Yet again music from another project was used to good effect in a Prokofiev symphony. The powerful slow movement draws on music composed in 1936 and intended for an abortive film of Pushkin’s 'Queen of Spades'.

J.S BACH: Partitas & Sonatas for Violin Solo Midori

Label: Onyx Classics File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: ONYX4123 Barcode: 880040412328 2 FOR 1.5 Price Format: 2 CD Packaging: cristal Midori [violin]

“The story goes that, when I was about two years old, my mother found me humming a Bach melody that she had been practicing a few days earlier. My own memories of Bach begin from the time when I started to practice my first solo Sonata in G minor, when I was about seven years old. The piece had been assigned to me, as all repertoire was at that age, and I had no idea what to do with it. Over the years, I have come to realize that, in studying Bach, one’s learning never stops. To my thinking – and I’m sure most other violinists would agree – these sonatas and partitas for solo violin are monuments of the literature, for many reasons. Their study opens up and trains the ear for more precise and ever-deeper listening. One learns to understand the relationship between the various notes, in addition to just hearing the notes themselves. Indeed, I find that I have learned more from studying these Bach compositions than from any other music. It is an almost miraculous feeling that envelops me when I am fully engaged with these musical masterworks. These works are larger than life – they stretch the artistic and technical responses that one can have toward a piece of music. Bach’s music is always “right” for any circumstance. I have been able to present these pieces anywhere: to play for refugees in an outdoor setting, in the intensive care units at hospitals, in great concert halls, in places of worship, for celebratory occasions or remembrances and in any corner of any country in which I have ever performed. Bach travels well. The music does not require any special equipment or conditions. It must simply be played and heard, and invariably, with every committed performance, listeners young or old manage to be as transported as is any beguiled performer.” Taken from Midori’s booklet notes ALSO AVAILABLE BY MIDORI ON ONYX: ONYX4084 Bloch Violin Sonata No.2, Janacek, Shostakovich Violin Sonatas Adverts in Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine

BRAHMS: Die schöne Magelone 15 Romances for Voice and Piano op. 33 with texts from Ludwig Tieck's novella 'The Love Story of the Fair Magelone and Count Peter of Provence'

Peter Schreier András Schiff

Label: Belvedere File Under: Classical/Secular Vocal music Catalogue No: BCD08001 Barcode: 4260415080011 2 FOR 1 Price Format: 2 CD Packaging: digipack Peter Schreier [tenor] András Schiff [piano] Gert Westphal [speaker]

These 2 cds, recorded in September 1997, combine with distinctive charm 'Die schöne Magelone and Count Peter of Provence' by Ludwig Tieck and 15 Romanzen of Johannes Brahms. Tieck’s novella is based on a chivalric romance from the 14th century, which in turn itself based on a saga from Provence. It tells the story of the knight Peter, victorious in his every tournament. It tells of his travels, of his courting of Magelone, the beautiful princess of Naples, of her kidnapping, their separation and the lovers’ happy reunification after numerous adventures. The peculiar poetry of these lied Texts, their emotional variety and unusual form impressed the young Johannes Brahms who set the songs to music. The 15 Romanzen aus “Die schöne Magelone” was published as Opus 33 in 1869. Gert Westphal's inimitable speaking voice expresses the innocence of the fairy tale as well as the archaic literary language of Ludwig Tieck. Spirited, trenchant yet not overdone, this experienced reciter enables listeners to experience the external and internal events of the story making the dramatic and emotional settings of the songs understandable. András Schiff elevates his piano part far above the avaerage lieder accompanist with playing that encompasses the entire spectrum from lyrical tenderness to powerfully intensified drama. The partnership with Peter Schreier is a rare example of high art: Schreier becomes the knight Peter completely; his extreme outbursts of emotion demonstrate his high ranking as one of the most versatile and skilled singers of the 20th century. live recording at Musiktage Mondsee 1997 Stereo Digital Remastering Ton Eichinger Wien, 2015

Pierre BARTHOLOMEE: Oedipe sur la route José Van Dam La Monnaie Evidence Classics presents the world première recording of Pierre Bartholomée's 'Oedipe sur la route', based on the 1990 novel by Henry Bauchau and commissioned by La Monnaie. An opera in four acts, 'Oedipe' was first staged in March 2003 in a performance conducted by Daniele Callegari with stage direction by Philippe Sireuil. José Van Dam sang the title role with a superb cast of soloists that includes Italian soprano Valentina Valente in a disturbingly beautiful contemporary work that explores the themes of man and fate.

'Oedipe sur la route' calls for considerable musical and stage forces: a symphony orchestra, a chorus (generally invisible), 12 solo singers, two silent actors and a few extras. There are four acts. The first has something of a very free sonata form. Oedipus wants to leave, go 'anywhere outside of Thebes'. Antigone follows him. Clios, a bandit, suddenly appears and attacks Antigone. Fight. Oedipus brings him down. Clios tells about Alcyon, enemy clans, the mountains, the drama of his life. Oedipus and Antigone listen, dumbfounded. The story is tragic. Fragile bonds are formed. Clios wants to accompany Oedipus. They will henceforth be three on the road to 'no matter where'. A sea interlude leads to Act II, a sort of dramatic scherzo. Oedipus works and raves. In the midst of a storm, he works furiously. He wants to sculpt 'a boat and its rowers' in the immense cliff face overhanging the sea. In Act III, the 'slow movement', Oedipus seeks to return to the community of men. He meets Diotima the sibyl. She wants to deliver him from himself: 'you are clear-voiced'. He sings to her of Jocasta and the Sphinx. It is learnt that the plague is invading the villages. Diotima sends Oedipus to care for the ailing. He soon falls victim to the terrible disease. Death is at hand. In an offering of his whole being, Calliope brings him back to life. 'The night dogs', final interlude, a haunting evocation of one of the most gripping collateral narratives of the novel, leads into Act IV, that of the fulfilment: Oedipus arrives in Colona and enters the Sacred Wood. He is henceforth 'clairvoyant'. The final song, adieus: it is the end of the road.

The result is an exhilarating recording of concertos by Saint-Saëns, Henriette Renié, Dubois and Pierné. “The ostinato bass, presented here in its most varied forms, consists, in technical terms, in the repetition of a harmonic formula or a melodic theme on which one elaborates a set of variations, which were originally improvised. These are often simple formulas, like the blues or the beat in our time, and yet they possess greater magic powers than a druidic potion. We went in search of the ostinato as a means of expression, as a musical form, and as a minimalist rhetorical and ritual phenomenon. If the ex-pression ‘minimalist music’ has come to have a precise definition in the twentieth century, referring to a school of composition of which minimal-ism has become the primary characteristic, its origins go back many centuries further. Pieces on an ostinato bass – the canario, the passacalle, the capona, the romanesca, the calata, and finally the scaramanza – were employed in the service of the dance and in the theatre of the commedia dell’arte; they encouraged meditation; but they were used above all as a free space for improvisation and the interplay of sonorities among related instruments, whether they were from the family of bowed strings, wind, percussion, or, notably, plucked strings. […] With the exception of Corbetta’s suite with countermelody for two guitars and Granata’s suite, the actual form of the works and the entire melodic material present on this disc and used in the ostinato basses and the dances such as the tarantella come into the category of genuine improvisation.” -- Rolf Lislevand [excerpts from the liner notes]

The Kristjan Järvi Sound Project: Parallel Tones Richard STRAUSS: Sinfonia Domestica Op.53 Duke ELLINGTON: A Tone Parallel to Harlem (Harlem Suite) 1950

MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra Kristjan Järvi The third release in the Kristjan Järvi Sound Project, 'Parallel Tones' takes two iconic works both united by New York. Strauss's 'Sinfonia Domestica' - debuted at Carnegie Hall and featuring four saxophones in what was the composer's idea of the 'American' sound - and Ellington's 'Harlem', a big band piece very much inspired by Strauss's tone poems. These two 'parallel tones' - one going from Europe to America and one from America back in time to Europe – morph 19th century European musical language with that of the American 20th century, crossing paths in New York. Launched in 2014, the KJSP series features projects across all of Järvi’s ensembles and is characterised by the conductor’s unmistakable approach in taking a fresh look at the old, with concepts and presentation that transcend the borders of classical music.

Norn: Maria von Ilosvay, 2. Norn: Ira Malaniuk, 3. Norn: Regina Resnik 1953 was the third year of 'New Bayreuth', with the pattern each year of two cycles of the Ring, several performances of 'Parsifal', and two other dramas, one in a new production, being established. In 1953 the major crises was the absence of Hans Knappertsbusch, who in the first two years had already come to be the backbone of the musical side. So, rather late in the day, Wieland Wagner summoned to Bayreuth two conductors of the generation after Kna: Clemens Krauss to conduct 'Parsifal' and the second cycle of the Ring, and Joseph Keilberth to conduct the first Ring cycle and the new production of 'Lohengrin'. This was the first year in which Hans Hotter sang all three Wotans, and he is in stupendous form the whole way through. For the first time at Bayreuth Martha Mödl sings Brünnhilde, and she too is at her finest, that unmistakeable voice full and warm. And this was also the first year that Wolfgang Windgassen sang Siegfried, a role he made his own for at least the next 15 years. In 1953 he sings with a volume and energy which has him in line with his predecessors rather than his successors. This cycle (and the later one under Clemens Krauss) established the major figures for the next five years, Hotter always as Wotan, Varnay and Mödl more or less alternating as Brünnhilde, and Windgassen, with one exception, Siegfried, similarly Gustav Neidlinger as Alberich. No more satisfactory Ring cast has been assembled since, indeed none can touch it, and this release is a fitting tribute to its lasting greatness.

The practice of adapting contemporary music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries was aimed at making well-known works playable at home. The piano and the harmonium, as instruments for domestic music-making, were of the utmost importance. But for Karg-Elert, the harmonium, especially the Kunstharmonium, (art harmonium) was a concert instrument and one perfect for use in adaptations. Wagner in particular occupied a prominent place for Karg-Elert an he adapted 30 pieces from Wagner’s operas for these instruments. Whereas the strengths of the piano, as a hammer or percussion instrument, are based on virtuosity, dexterity and possibilities of different accents, the harmonium is particularly convincing because of an expressivity through sound production by means of free reeds. A variety of timbres, as well as crescendo and decrescendo on sustained tones, are its principal domain. Karg-Elert’s Wagner transcriptions deserve a position of importance, for his artistic standards go beyond pure adaptation and the orchestral aspect is uniquely shown to advantage, especially in these harmonium-piano duo versions.

As a practising musician, he is constantly dealing with musical tradition and this influences his composing. Widmann, however, has not only examined the string quartet, he has prolonged his involvement with the genre over a period of eight years with a series of five quartets, which, though they are independent pieces, can also be viewed as a large work in five movements. The cycle of the five string quartets is juxtaposed with two early works by Widmann: as early as 1990, he wrote a short movement for string quartet as part of his school opera 'Absences' (revised in 1993). The string sextet '180 Beats per Minute' (1993) – the title comes from the tempo indication – is inspired by fast pulses of techno music.

This ensemble is therefore quite familiar as to how the individual quartets complement, contradict, and relate to each other dramaturgically.” Jörg Widmann

Nielson, now Professor of Composition at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, is highly regarded by his colleagues and students. This is proven by the stellar performers here, including Steven Schick and the JACK Quartet. Axis, for solo percussion and string quintet, is a nearly constant swirl of sound, pixilated into discrete gestures.

Tocsin is for six percussionists. The arresting synchronicity heard at the opening (and several times again over the course of the work) is intended to index the sound of a crowd at the verge of popular revolution. The crowd, as we can hear, repeatedly takes shape only to collapse and cool off into contrapuntal pattering; again gathering their strength to reassemble only to inevitably collapse back into idle murmurings. Le Journal du corps for string quartet, begins with minutes of collaged schizophrenia followed by striking moments of harmonic repose and the elegant stillness of non-vibrato chords. Nielson’s striking decision has the string players sing just four minutes before the ending; amateur voices from the professional string quartet. All first recordings.

After the success of his first album, devoted to Locatelli's 24 'Caprices for solo violin', Gabriel Tchalik takes us to Russia in the second half of the 20th century, following in the footsteps of Boris Tishchenko (1939-2010).This album features the world premiere recordings of Tishchenko's complete works for violin. To underscore this event, Gabriel Tchalik wanted to bring together with this album three outstanding personalities from the intellectual and artistic world of this post-Stalin era: a composer, a painter and a writer, each of whom, in his own way, depicted Soviet reality of the time. Instigator of Moscow's famous so-called 'Bulldozer Exhibition', repressed in 1974 by the regime, Oscar Rabin is a painter now internationally known; 12 of his unpublished drawings, dating from the 1950s and '60s, are thus presented in this new album conceived as an art object. Drawing their inspiration from the same Soviet reality and attesting to the ephemeral artistic effervescence that occurred at the moment of the Thaw, they closely echo the music of Tishchenko. So it is with the text by Nicolas Bokov, a dissident writer forced into exile by the same regime. "Tchalik is dramatic as well as heartfelt and even poetic, shaping every phrase with exquisite care and awesome atmosphere." Remy Franck / Pizzicato Magazine

Michael Hofstetter is a much sought-after conductor with a broad repertoire stretching over several different epochs, and in 2015 his invitations range from the Styriarte Graz to the Houston Grand Opera. The Baroque is undoubtedly one of Hofstetter’s main areas of expertise: his affinity for the works of Handel has been often proven at venues such as the Handel Festival in Karlsruhe and English National Opera in London. Hofstetter was chief conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra from 2006 to 2013, and together they have now recorded Handel’s Concerti grossi Nos. 1, 6, 10 and 12 from his Opus 6 collection, along with the concerto grosso Alexander’s Feast. This last concerto, dating from 1736, was composed while Handel was still lord of the operatic world in London. Nevertheless, it already displays many characteristics familiar from his later concertos, with its sparkling allegro opening, its pastoral Largo, the rich counterpoint of its fugue and its dancelike final movement. Handel’s subsequent concerti grossi offer one highpoint of the genre after another – and the masterful, transparent performances of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra under Michael Hofstetter do full justice to this music and the concerti grossi op. 6 can justly be regarded as the highpoint of Handel’s instrumental oeuvre, on a par with Bach’s 'Well-Tempered Clavier' and his 'Brandenburg' Concertos.

A talented composer whose works are unfairly neglected, Nicola Francesco Haym was the librettist of many Handel operas. The musicians of L'Aura Rilucente evoke the relationship between the two artists with tenderness and brio in a programme juxtaposing trio sonatas and arrangements of operatic arias.

Recordings of Tartini's solo violin sonatas are relatively rare, which makes this new release from violinist David Plantier and cellist Annabelle Luis a real treasure. Tartini's instrumental vision for music that is 'Cantabile e suonabile' (singable and playable) is wonderfully realised in performances that give us a new appreciation for these 18th century works that push back the limits of the instrument.

Francesco BARSANTI: Sonate a flauto solo con basso, op. 1 Arcadia Attilio Cremonesi Francesco Barsanti was a contemporary of Geminiani, and like him worked for a number of years in London; Barsanti moved thence to Edinburgh, where he lived for some 30 years, before making his return to the British capital. His first published opus, consisting of these six flute sonatas, allow the superb members of the ensemble Arcadia (flautist Christoph Ehrsam, gambist Eunice Brand達o and harpsichordist Attilio Cremonesi) to project all their sensitivity for and control of the melodic impulse and of the realisation of the basso continuo.

Antonio Jiménez MANJON: Works for guitar Raphaëlla Smits Romanza No. 3, Aire vasco Op. 19, Noveletta I. A orillas del arroyo, Noveletta II. Idilio, Cuento de amor Op. 18, Célebre capricho andaluz Op. 17, Leyenda, Quiero y no quiero (habanera) Raphaëlla Smits, the grande dame of the guitar from Belgium, has spent some 35 years making memorable recordings, many of them for the Accent label. This recital containing pieces by Antonio Jiménez Manjón appeared in 1999, and did admirable justice to a composer whose name – despite the high quality of his music – has not figured frequently on recordings. The melodiousness of his writing, almost unlimited in its variety, comes to life under the hands of a Smits fully idiomatic in the language of this Spaniard who emigrated to South America, and heard exquisitely caressing the strings of an original guitar made by Vicente Torres in 1899.

For many people, the poetry of the violinist Enrico Gatti, which we have been enjoying in concerts and on recordings (for labels such as Symphonia, Arcana and Glossa) for more than three decades is unparalleled when addressing the subtlest of Italian music from the 17th and 18th centuries. For this 1992 recording, Gatti alights upon some of the loveliest of 18th-century pieces for his instrument which were composed for the Court of Savoy in Turin, including works by Somis, Giardini and Pugnani, unveiling for us a fascinating and seldom-visited world.

Label: Glossa File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: GCDC80604 Barcode: 8424562806047 MID Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Nachtmusique: Eric Hoeprich [clarinet & direction] Toni Salar-VerdĂş [clarinet] Jane Gower, Javier Zafra [bassoons] Teunis van der Zwart, Erwin Wieringa [horns] Carles Riera [clarinet] Emilio Moreno [viola] David Sinclair [contrabass]

Erich Hoeprich's ensemble, Nachtmusique typically draws its members from the wind section of the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, directed, until his death in August 2014, by Frans BrĂźggen. Quite probably the leading specialists today in Harmoniemusik, a genre fashionable in Vienna and its surrounding area as the 18th century turned into the 19th, here operating as a sextet and playing delightfully sounding original instruments, Nachtmusique give us an entire disc devoted to the Bohemian composer Franz Krommer, with music full of vibrancy and humour.
