The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge is one of the world’s foremost choirs and unquestionably among the most widely heard. It owes its existence to King Henry VI, who envisaged the daily singing of services in his magnificent chapel. This remains the Choir’s raison d’être, and is an important part of the lives of its 16 choristers, who are educated at King’s College School, and the 14 choral scholars and two organ scholars, who study a variety of subjects in the College. The Choir has been a breeding ground for numerous professional singers, many of whom will appear on forthcoming recordings from the new label. The Choir has a rich recording heritage, having appeared on many albums for both Decca and EMI Classics. The Choir’s recording of Rutter’s 'Gloria' has sold in excess of 100,000 units globally and its previous albums of Christmas music have sold in millions. This double album faithfully recreates the magic of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, opening with a lone treble singing 'Once in royal David’s city' and closing with a rousing chorus of 'Hark! the herald angels sing'. Each year, the Choir’s Director of Music Stephen Cleobury commissions a new carol, several of which are included on the album, including carols by Einojuhani Rautavaara, Gabriel Jackson, Brett Dean, Mark-Anthony Turnage, Dominic Muldowney and Tansy Davies. In addition, John Rutter was commissioned to write the new carol 'All bells in paradise' especially for this album. The album’s release will be accompanied by a major international press and marketing campaign and will be supported by advertising. Video is available for online and instore use, with the campaign culminating in this year’s Christmas broadcasts. The Choir of King’s College, Cambridge will tour to the USA during April 2013, coinciding with the label’s second release, Mozart’s 'Requiem', with special guest soloists and a unique bonus CD presenting extracts from alternative completions of the work.

BRITTEN: Turn of the Screw Glyndebourne production by Jonathan Kent

Label: FRA Musica File Under: Classical/Opera & Vocal Catalogue No: FRA007 Barcode: 3770002003114 Normal Price Format: 1 DVD Packaging: long box Prologue/Peter Quint: Toby Spence Governess: Miah Persson Mrs Grose: Susan Bickley Miss Jessel: Giselle Allen London Philharmonic Orchestra / Jakub Hrusa
It is indeed ‘a curious story’, as the Prologue says. A remote English country house, an old and faithful housekeeper, two young orphan children and an eager new governess sent down from London to look after them. But all is not quite as it seems in the sheltered world of Bly. Spirits from the past increasingly encroach upon the realm of the living. And one question keeps worming its way into the governess’s mind: what exactly did happen between the children, their former governess and the deceased manservant, Peter Quint? Britten’s brilliantly scored, insidiously compelling adaptation of Henry James’s novella takes its themes of childish innocence and adult corruption, then twists and turns them to disturbing and ultimately devastating effect. Jonathan Kent’s eerily unsettling staging has been recorded at the Glyndebourne Festival conducted by Glyndebourne on Tour’s Music Director, Jakub Hrusa. “Here is Britten’s supremely crafted operatic masterpiece — not a dud moment or false move — in a shatteringly powerful performance of such musical and theatrical distinction that I scarcely know where to begin apportioning praise. Perhaps the conductor: I already knew the quality of Jonathan Kent’s production from its first outing in 2006, and the cast looked pretty hot on paper too. But what I hadn’t suspected was that the young Czech conductor Jakub Hrusa would offer such a thrillingly visceral, angry and churned-up reading of the score. Galvanising the LPO to playing of scalding brilliance, Hrusa carefully ratcheted up the tension in the early scenes and brought the drama to the boil with an almost daemonic intensity. This wasn’t a nice creepy bedtime story, but something reaching dangerously into the darker reaches of human nature.” Rupert Christiansen, The Telegraph

This is the 4th recording by Patricia Kopatchinskaja on naïve; the second in the concerto repertoire. The collaboration with conductor/composer Peter Eötvos and the programme is an intense series of connections. Between Bartok, Ligeti, Eotvos and Kopatchinskaja, there are many links: Hungary, the land of the 3 composers featured; Peter Eötvos was the conductor of the first performance of the second version of Ligeti violin concerto, in 1992, with Ensemble Modern; Patricia Kopatchinakaja and Peter Eötvös have been working together for 4 years, performing several concertos, including those recorded here. Beyond those connections, this recording features 2 highs from 20th century violin repertoire and the world premiere recording of Eötvös’ 'Seven' which refers to the loss of the Columbia space shuttle in 2003, and which caused the death of all seven of its occupants. “Between heaven and earth, past and future, I sank for a moment into the Hungarian cosmos and sensed whispers, fragments and signs of living and immortal souls. From light and darkness, dream and wakefulness, music burst forth.” Patricia Kopatchinskaja

Susan Graham’s eagerly awaited new ONYX CD is a characteristically wide ranging recital which covers a wide spectrum of female emotions as experienced by the virgins, vixens and one of the most frightening of viragos – Lady Macbeth, all captured here in song. In addition to these emotional extremes, there are also lighter issues for a girl to confront, in the Poulenc, and a fruitless pursuit of a boy in the Sondheim to lighten the mood! Susan is one of the great mezzo sopranos of our time, renowned for her operatic performances, and for her recitals. Her earlier CD for ONYX ‘Un frisson francais – A century of French Song' was widely praised. "Graham's "bouquet" of French song, spanning 100 years from Gounod to Messiaen is one of the most delicious surprises of the year - chocolate truffles for the ears" Sunday Times, Record of the Year, Hugh Canning 7.12.08 "Graham’s superb pianist, Martineau, is the begetter of what he calls a menu gourmand, and with the help of Graham’s velvet mezzo and beautifully enunciated French, it is served up sumptuously." Sunday Times, 28.9.08, Hugh Canning, CD of the Week "The American mezzo Susan Graham covers the quai of French song from Bizet to Poulenc in five sets. The selection is clever, eclectic and often downright obscure. A rare nocturne by the severe Cesar Franck, a sentimental neurosis called Psyche by the unspellable Paladilhe, The Lost Fiancee by Messiaen and Manuel Rosenthal’s English Mouse are just a sampling of this potpourri. Malcolm Martineau is the impeccable accompanist in St Paul’s Church, New Southgate, which is engineered to sound like a Left Bank salon. Delicious." London Evening Standard 12.11.08, Norman Lebrecht

Label: Onyx Classics File Under: Classical/Secular Vocal music Catalogue No: ONYX4102 Barcode: 880040410225 Normal Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Henk Neven [baritone] Hans Eijsackers [piano]
The Sea, songs of water and the sea, diverse in colour and emotion. Henk Neven on his new ONYX recording: "During the recordings of my debut album 'Auf einer Burg' in Suffolk, I visited, after a day’s work, the coastal town of Aldeburgh. It was winter-time and at six o’clock pitch dark already. I was walking along the sea. Darkness all around. Nevertheless I heard, smelt and felt the sea. Not visible but very present. We sat by the water for ages and indulged in fancies, philosophised, and written poetry lustily about the endless deep of the sea, about the horizon and what is behind it, about the similarity to our spiritual lives, about the currents that are as our lives; about the sea that takes us with it when we are tired of living; about the restless sailor who revives between storm and waves; about the solitary wife who, rocking her baby, is left alone; about the sea in which you pour out your heart… Have all these tears made the seawater so bitterly salt? The sea and the water have been a source of inspiration for many poets and their poems inspired the composers likewise. The songs that were created that way have inspired me". Henk’s debut album 'Auf einer Burg', lieder by Loewe and Schumann, ONYX4052, was praised by BBC Radio 3: "songsettings by Loewe, beautifully brought to life by baritone Henk Neven and pianist Hans Eijsackers... A world of fantasies and dreams and reflections on the passing of time and the transience of life. That’s what it says on the sleeve, and that’s exactly what they deliver so successfully. It’s the CD Review Disc of the Week and you’ll find it on ONYX Classics.” "it is a long time since I enjoyed a disc of Lieder from a young singer quite as much as this, and I long to hear more from him" Gramophone "Here's a name to watch. The young Dutch baritone was made a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist two years ago and richly deserves his chance to shine on his first solo album. Neven's highly individual timbre is unlike any other lieder interpreter's: he sings with astonishing technical finesse, verbal acuity and a sense of wonder in these pieces from Schumann's annus miserabilis of song, 1840 (the year of his long-delayed marriage to Clara). This is an entirely fresh account of a familiar cycle, Eichendorff Liederkreis, op39, preceded by a group of Loewe ballads, steeped like Schumann's songs, in romantic nostalgia for medieval Germanic folklore. Eijsacker's virtuoso piano-playing only enhances this remarkable young singers's outstanding debut." The Sunday Times, 4 stars, April 2011

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra Nicholas McGegan “If Brahms had called his enchanting Serenade in D major a symphony—and he almost did—we would be hearing it all the time.” (Michael Steinberg, annotator) Music Director Nicholas McGegan and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra bring to life the depth and brilliance of Brahms’ two Serenades in this recording on historically accurate instruments. The San Francisco Chronicle raved: “Nothing affirmed the power of [the historically-informed] approach like the splendid performance of the Serenade… [McGegan] embraced every opportunity to give the music a musky physicality – especially in the outer movements, whose rhythmic force was arresting."

Frans Brüggen Frans Brüggen first turned his attention to the music of Beethoven’s Nine Symphonies in the 1980s, using period instruments. Now, his quest undimmed, he returns to the glories of Beethoven’s orchestral music for a new cycle being issued in a sumptuous hybrid SACD box set on Glossa. Likewise undimmed is the rapport he shares with his orchestra for one of classical music’s greatest challenges by way of concert performances: Brüggen has long distanced himself from studio recordings.

26 years ago, Hervé Niquet recalls having become so incensed with the disparaging remarks directed at French music and the 'Lamentations' of Jean Gilles' in particular' by a conductor of a choir in which he was then singing that Niquet vowed to set up his own ensemble and record the work – and demonstrate furthermore other beauties of music from his country (and beyond). And so Le Concert Spirituel was born, now celebrating its quarter century, its vocal and instrumental forces constantly delighting audiences with its joyous celebration of music from the 17th and 18th centuries (and now with Charles-Simon Catel’s Sémiramis, the dawn of the 19th). To mark the anniversary, Glossa is now issuing an attractively-priced double-disc celebration, with Niquet pulling out the stops from across Le Concert Spirituel’s broad and expansive range (and he started musical life as an organist, after all): Baroque sacred music, Marc-Antoine Charpentier assuredly; selections from Le Concert Spirituel’s “re-oxygenation”, as he calls it, of the tragédie lyrique (Grétry, Campra, Destouches), but also demonstrations of his own nimble-footed theatrical tendency (Niquet is an avowed fan of the musichall!) in Handel, Purcell and Striggio. Musical ostentation and bravura are concluded on each disc by some of Niquet’s own special bonnes bouches: Boismortier, D’Agincour, Marais and excerpts from his 'other' Charpentier (Gustave). All accompanied by a sparkling apéritif from the conductor himself about how Le Concert Spirituel came to reach its 25th anniversary!

With this newly researched recording of Couperin's Les Nations, Les Ombres, a Baroque ensemble of the new European generation, boldly cross borders and barriers to share a vision of spiritual union beyond national divide. Couperin was the very first composer in France to produce a trio sonata in the style of Corelli, which he composed when he was barely 22-years old. Not daring at first to declare openly his admiration for the Italian genius, he did not sign his own name to 'L’Astrée', written around 1691. It was finally published in 1726, in the collection known as 'Les Nations', where it became the opening ‘sonade’ of La Piémontoise. To serve as the sonades of 'La Françoise' and 'L’Espagnole', he also reused two early works 'La Pucelle' and 'La Visionnaire'. Only the sonade of 'L’Impériale' was wholly composed around 1726. Each sonade is followed by a suite of dances in the French style, in the course of which the composer elaborates upon his mastery of ornamentation and interweaving lines. The assembly process is a success, and 'Les Nations' constitutes a single gesture: the ultimate réunion of all the output of François Couperin, from his tenderest youth to his ripest maturity. The entrance of 'L’Impériale' glitters with a splendour we have never before encountered in the French master. He succeeds in fostering the illusion that he has submitted to the discipline of the sonata da chiesa all his life. The mastery of German counterpoint and the first stirrings of the galanterie later to characterise the Mannheim School make 'L’Impériale' the most modern of the four Nations. In homage to this stylistic highpoint, Les Ombres asked Benjamin Alard to record Bach’s organ transcription of the 'Légèrement' of the sonade from 'L’Impériale'. This Aria in F major thus hints at an imaginary encounter between the two composers. A Baroque ensemble of the new generation, Les Ombres was founded by Sylvain Sartre and Margaux Blanchard in 2006 with the aim of closely linking musicological research and ‘historically informed’ performance. The group is strongly committed to young audiences, and places transmission at the heart of its artistic strategy. The first recording of Les Ombres, ‘Concert chez la Reine’ (AMY301) was released in 2010 and garnered much critical accclaim: ffff in Télérama, 3 stars in Classica, Top 5 on Classiquenews, 5/5 on Muse baroque. The musical source used for this recording is the score published in separate parts by Boivin and engraved by L.H. Hüe in Paris in 1726, now held in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. The so-called ‘Lyon’ and ‘Paris’ manuscripts containing the first versions of the sonades enabled us to make a comparative study of ornamentation, articulation and figuring, while keeping a certain critical distance from these in the light of Couperin’s own warning in his preface of 1726 to Les Nations: ‘There have been a number of manuscripts in circulation in which I place little faith because of the negligence of the copyists.’ CONCERT: 3rd December York Early Music Christmas Festival [Telemann + Rameau]

"Beer and the viola da gamba both arrived in England in the space of a year, in the reign of King Henry VII”, wrote Henry Peacham. And yet it was not until the following reign, that of Henry VIII, that the latter instrument gained its noble status. The high point, however, occurred in the long reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). The consort song had its origin partly in the theatre, partly in madrigals inspired by the Italians, then very much in vogue. Fashionable English composers write songs, airs and dance pieces that would embody this uniquely English phenomenon; among them John Dowland and Anthony Holborne, who feature prominently on this disc, both leading figures in Elizabethan music. With his ensemble Musicall Humors, Julien Léonard has managed to create a viol consort of astonishing homogeneity, offset by the delicate presence at times of a lute, at times of a cittern, a harpsichord, the virginals or organ. The sonorities are round, warm, velvety, and for her first solo disc, the voice of Eugénie Warnier lies with unforced delicacy upon this instrumental duvet. ALSO AVAILABLE: MU001 Antoine FORQUERAY, Pièces de Violes “The three members of Musicall Humors bring to life this vital repertoire with panache and a pleasing awareness of ensemble. Julien Léonard has a secure technique and a lively dramatic sense. His playing is full of character and he is touchingly expressive in his depiction of the many and varied portraits present in each suite. The most extrovert gestures are perhaps contained in the G major Suite which concludes with a supple Chaconne whose brief chromaticism towards the end comes as a surprise. Mirth and melancholy, in equal measure, make for rewarding listening.” 5 stars Nicholas Anderson, BBC Music Magazine (February 2012)

Louis-Gabriel GUILLEMAIN: Amusements Aliquando
Stéphanie Paulet, one of the most brilliant French baroque violinists, plunges us into the world of Louis-Gabriel Guillemain, 18th-century composer, at the heart of the Enlightenment. A programme alternating pieces for solo violin of formidable virtuosity, sonatas, symphonies, divertimentos and ‘amusements’. "When talking of a full fiery man, one of genius and vivacity, one must name Mr. Guillemain, ordinaire of the King’s music, who is, perhaps, the most rapid and the most extraordinary violin ever to be heard; his hand dazzles, there are no difficulties that can stop him, and he alone creates them in his own skilful productions that at times embarrass his rivals. This famous artiste is one of the most prolific of the great masters, and it is agreed that his works are filled with the most zestful beauty.”

Born in the latter years of Louis XIV’s reign, Guillemain, a brilliant violinist, was employed as a Court musician. He who became the protégé of Madame de Pompadour, the king’s favourite, was also a prolific composer, and the first in France to tackle the sonata for solo violin. His ultimate opus, the guiding thread of this disc, appears as a synthesis of his musical investigations; each piece requires ever greater virtuosity, pushing further back the performance limits of the instrument. With ensemble Aliquando, Stéphanie Paulet presents a broad and varied view of Guillemain’s output, accompanied by the finest French musicians of the day (Maude Gratton, François Lazarevich, Lucile Boulanger).

The ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria under the direction of the violinist Gunar Letzbor devote this double CD to Bach's instrumental and vocal works with reissued recordings originating from 1995 and 1996. CD 1 features the two Violin Concertos BWV1041 and 1042, with Letzbor as soloist, and the Double Violin concerto, in which Daniel Sepec takes on the equal role of second soloist. These works are augmented by Brandenburg Concerto No. 4, in which the concertino group includes not only solo violin but also two recorders, performed with great virtuosity and sinuous tone by Kees Boeke and Michael Oman. Bach’s arrangement of the Pergolesi 'Stabat Mater' known as Psalm 51 is seldom performed. Bach replaced Pergolesi’s text of the 'Stabat Mater' with the Lutheran translation of Psalm 51 and undertook a number of alterations to both vocal and instrumental parts. Bach attached great importance to the exact musical illustration of individual words of the text, producing an orchestral score with greater complexity and more heightened contrasts than the original Pergolesi. The special feature of this recording is the assignment of the St. Florianer Sängerknaben boys’ choir from which the excellent soloists have also been recruited. The CD also includes 'Himmelskönig, sei willkommen' in which the male vocal parts are sung by the Kepler Consort.

Alessio Bax The Italian-born pianist and Leeds competition winner Alessio Bax returns with his third solo recital disc for Signum. Bax also tackles Brahms' fiendish set of 'Variations on a Theme of Pagainini, Op.35', which Bax describes in the programme notes as one of "the most fearsome works ever written for piano". Following these, one of the jewels of orchestral repertoire: Ravel's 'Dahpnis et Chloé' was composed for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes dance company and has remained a popular work to this day.

Da Lontano SCELSI: Mantram - canto anonimo CAGE: Solo for Sliding Trombone STOCKHAUSEN: Signale zur Invasion, I NONO: Post-prae-ludium n. 1 per Donau

Label: Wergo File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: WER6744-2 Barcode: 4010228674422 Normal Price Format: 1 SACD Packaging: cristal Mike Svoboda [trombone, tuba] Holger Stenschke [live electronics]
With this CD, the trombonist Mike Svoboda casts revealing sidelights on four heroes of new music. Late pieces by Luigi Nono and Giacinto Scelsi as well as derivations or condensations from major works by John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen are placed in a new space due to Svoboda's interpretation. Scelsi did not see himself as 'author' of 'Mantram, canto anonimo': By his own admission, he received the music from other spheres, acted as an intermediary between two worlds. Svoboda, in his version, makes the piece, which originally has not been designed for a certain instrument or voice, take shape, in close proximity to the language, in a declamatory pattern by means of breath, voice and sound. With 'Solo for Sliding Trombone', taken from Cage's 'Concerto for Piano and Orchestra', Mike Svoboda devised a version for eight trombones which he plays all by himself. The multiplication of the solo part produces an amazing multiplicity of moments of sound and silence. 'Signal zur Invasion I' – on this CD in a version for solo trombone – is part of Stockhausen's opera heptalogy 'LICHT' [Light]. The composer has the protagonist Lucifer musically represented by a trombonist. From the very beginning, this character has been connected with Svoboda who had been discovered by Stockhausen when he was a young musician. The genre 'post-prae-ludium' invented by Nono is a music which wants to play after and before at the same time, thus gradually piling up sound incidents and turning them into a hovering presence. In 'Post-prae-ludium per Donau', Svoboda's tuba actions are multiplied and rearranged by a live electronics sound designer so that a permanent spatial polyphony is created.

HENZE: In lieblicher Bläue Kammermusik 1958 on the hymn 'In lieblicher Bläue' Apollo et Hyazinthus Canzona

Of all the composers of the generation that attempted a new artistic beginning after the Second World War, Hans Werner Henze has always been notable for his strong connection to literature. It is especially his reference to Friedrich Hölderlin and Georg Trakl that shows the exact contrast to the ideals of the Nazi propaganda: the life and work of both poets represent individuality, complexity, the sensitive exploration of feeling, and vulnerability to the utmost degree. For a long time, the late works by Hölderlin had been labelled as products of the madness of the last decades of his life. The text of his hymn 'In lieblicher Bläue' was used by Henze for his 'Kammermusik 1958'. The large-scale cycle of vocal and instrumental movements accepts Hölderlin’s ideas and builds upon them in an 'act of identification': “By persisting, rising up, or remaining silent between sound images, the music enlarges, illuminates, or emphasizes. While the poetry uses the music like a reader, the music uses the poetry like a performer in a concert.” (Henze) Designed according to dodecaphonic principles, the work 'Apollo et Hyazinthus' (1948/49) turns out to be highly individual in many respects. Following Trakl's poetry, the genre varies between chamber music, symphonic poem, harpsichord concerto and orchestral song. In addition, the subtle floating between tonality and atonality gives the piece its distinctive character. In 1982, on the occasion of a viola congress, Henze created a septet entitled 'Canzona per sette strumenti' which centres on three violas. The title is reminiscent of the music of the 16th and 17th centuries. It is particularly the highly ornamented melodies of the oboe that bring to mind Renaissance and early Baroque music.

The RIAS Second Viennese School Project Berlin 1949-1965
Label: Audite File Under: Classical/Orchestral Catalogue No: AUDITE21412 Barcode: 4022143214126 Mid Price Format: 4 CD Packaging: box set Suzanne Danco, Rudolf Kolisch Eduard Steuermann, Winfried Zillig Else C. Kraus, Peter Stadlen Tibor Varga, Végh-Quartett RIAS-Kammerchor Berlin Philharmonic RIAS-SO, RSO Berlin Ferenc Fricsay...
This 4-CD boxed set presents historic recordings of works by Arnold Schoenberg, the founding father of 20th-century modern music, and his most prominent pupils, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. These recordings, made between 1949 and 1965, comprise works which were written between 1906 and 1950, thus portraying practically the entire era of the Viennese School. Not only do they trace the multi-layered compositional developments of the Viennese School, but they are also significant musical and historic documents of multi-faceted interpretational approaches towards this music. The Viennese School was formed before the First World War as a movement in music attempting to unite radical expressive techniques and traditional form concepts, demanding specially trained interpreters for this undertaking. In these RIAS recordings, first-rate artists from the circle of the three Viennese composers can be heard: Rudolf Kolisch, Eduard Steuermann, Winfried Zillig and Else C. Kraus were immediately shaped by their teacher, Schoenberg, whereas others, such as Peter Stadlen and Tibor Varga were in contact with the composer, or with Webern or Berg. Ferenc Fricsay or Suzanne Danco, on the other hand, did not belong to the circle of the Viennese School and its performance teachings. Their interpretations are of particular interest as they brought these works to life, unprejudiced by performance traditions of this music which, at that time, was hardly performed. The comparison of the two recordings of Schoenberg’s 'Fantasy for Violin and Piano', Op. 47, with Kolisch and Varga respectively, and the sensational interpretation of Schoenberg’s 'Pierrot Lunaire' by the Munich singer Irmen Burmester alongside an outstanding instrumental ensemble under the direction of Josef Rufer (1949) are particular highlights of this anthology. These radio recordings were made possible thanks to the indefatigable initiative of the music writer Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt in his role as Editor of New Music at the RIAS. He and his colleague Josef Rufer, who can be heard as conductor, ensured that those musicians who had returned from exile would be engaged to contribute to these radio documents. By doing so, Stuckenschmidt and Rufer intended, on the one hand, to continue the tradition of Schoenberg’s stay in Berlin from 1925 until 1933, and, on the other hand, to provide the music of the Viennese School with greater resonance within public awareness. This edition is complemented by the publication of a text by Prof Dr Rudolf Stephan, the doyen of research into the Viennese School in Germany after the Second World War and editor of the complete works of Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg. He reflects on his comprehensive experiences with the music of the Viennese School, stretching back to the years immediately following the end of the war.

BRUCKNER: Symphony No. 7 Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester Franz Welser-Möst Franz Welser-Möst's first Bruckner performance at the Salzburg Festival was justly celebrated in 1989. He conducted the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in the Seventh Symphony, in an interpretation by these young performers that was astonishing in its transcendence and in its manner of outlining the work’s musical contrasts. It was no surprise that the press greeted the conductor and the orchestra as a sensation and as a great hope for the future – it was also, after all, the first Festival “after” Karajan. Those hopes were later confirmed, and Welser-Möst and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra have since then returned to Salzburg on a regular basis.

Konstantin Lifschitz Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau However spectacular the Salzburg Festival may be, and however indebted to international stars, it is also remarkable for the sense of continuity it has shown over the years. This is a fact tinged with melancholy when one considers the half-century in which Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau played a determining role at the Festival as singer, reciter and as conductor. His last concert in Salzburg, in which he conducted the Mozarteum Orchestra, is now available in the CD series FESTIVAL DOCUMENTS. In a concert devoted entirely to Mozart, the pianist Konstantin Lifschitz was not just a soloist but a real partner in dialogue in the Piano Concerto K 456. The concert begins in solemn fashion with the Adagio and Fugue K 546 and ends in elation with the “Italian Symphony K 202.

Of the artists active today, Ricardo Muti has been a welcome guest at the Festival for more than 40 years. His first conducting engagements there did not just provide the basis for his current “telepathic” relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic, but also brought collaborations with important soloists of the older generation. Thus the new CD in the series FESTIVAL DOCUMENTS includes the Piano Concerto by Robert Schumann under Muti’s baton, with Sviatoslav Richter once more proving the uniqueness of his pianistic gifts. Over and above all its virtuoso challenges, Richter and Muti together give an account triumphant in its formal cohesion and in which they sculpt it as a large-scale musical arch. Muti’s deep understanding of Rossini and Mozart – represented here by the Overture to 'Semiramide' and the Sinfonia Concertante K 364 respectively – is also clearly evident in these early recordings.

RAVEL: Le Tombeau de Couperin, SCHUMANN Fantasie C Major op. 17, MUSSORGSKY: Pictures of an Exhibition
Alexis Weissenberg The pianist Alexis Weissenberg also died in 2012. He made his breakthrough in Salzburg during the Karajan era and is now represented in the Salzburg FESTIVAL DOCUMENTS with his solo recital of 1972. His evening began with Ravel’s 'Tombeau de Couperin', played transparently and with a highly flexible touch. Even the technically trickiest passages of Schumann’s C-major 'Fantasy' were embedded organically and convincingly into the musical flow of the work. Mussorgsky’s 'Pictures at an Exhibition' could hardly be played more effectively or with more colour than in Weissenberg’s interpretation. This work ended the 'official' part of his recital, though there followed many surprising encores, which can all be heard on these two CDs (for the price of one) and thus round off this memento of the artist.

Another favourite of the Salzburg public was the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, who besides her Cherubino in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro also enjoyed repeated successes in Salzburg with her song recitals. In 1986, accompanied by Martin Katz, she offered a programme that knew no boundaries – ranging from the florid poesy of settings by Fauré and Strauss to Mahler’s Songs of a Wayfarer, the moderate American Modernism of Charles Ives, Copland and Pasatieri, then to Canteloube’s French folk song adaptations. Schoenberg’s early cabaret songs served to round off the evening in ebullient fashion.

Although no longer a regular guest, José Carreras was in the 1970s and ’80s one of the great, up-and-coming singers and he returns in 2012 once more for a song recital in Salzburg on August 30. Accompanied here by Edoardo Müller, his recital of 1981 takes us from the French song with piano by Massenet and Fauré via the tenor “classics” of Tosti to the canciones of De Falla, Mompou and Turina – and all sung with a secure sense of style and with great subtlety. Carreras’s encores delighted adherents of the brilliant tenor repertoire, and can be appreciated on this recording too.
