LISZT: Sonata in B minor, Late pieces Paul Lewis Editor’s Choice, Gramophone *****, The Guardian Radio 3 Disc of the Week Gramophone Critics’ Choice Pianist Recommended
Label: harmonia mundi File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: HMA1951845 Barcode: 3149020184530 BUDGET Price Format: 1 CD Paul Lewis [piano]
"The poetry and grandeur of his playing put Paul Lewis's Liszt among the Greats…even in a crowded market place (where Horowitz, Gilels, Richter, Argerich, Brendel and Pollini, etc, jostle for attention) Paul Lewis's recording stands out for its breadth, mastery and shining musicianship. Eschewing all obvious display, he concentrates on the Sonata's Monumental weight, grandeur and ever-elusive inner poetry. His sense of drama is dark and intense and his reading of the central Andante sostenuto alone puts his performance in the highest league…one of the finest, most intelligently planned Liszt recitals to have come my way for many years. Harmonia Mundi's sound is of demonstration quality.” Bryce Morrison, Editor’s Choice, Gramophone, October 2004 “a performance of unflinching energy and power, of youthful intensity and sharp- edged clarity. There’s never a moment that isn’t filled with interest or edge- of-the-seat excitement. Lewis’s playing has an irresistible magnetism. It has a reflective charm, too, in the shorter, lesser-known pieces that complete this Liszt homage - the delicate Four Piano Pieces, the delicious En Rêve and the pensive La Lugubre gondola among them." KENNETH WALTON, The Scotsman, 10 September 2004 “Lewis's refusal to indulge in self-conscious flamboyance generates tremendous, brooding intensity throughout. Those who equate Liszt purely with bravura showmanship will probably be fazed. If you really care about his music, however, you'll love it." Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 17 September 2004, ***** "[Lewis] tackles Liszt's monumental Sonata with an energy and power that sweeps all before it, while allowing room for thoughtful introspection, too. It's an astonishing performance." Andrew Clarke, The Independent, 2-8 October 2004, 4/5 “Oh and Santa, if you’re passing, I wouldn’t mind at all if you dropped Paul Lewis’s majestic account of the Liszt B minor Sonata down the chimney.” Lindsay Kemp, Critics’ Choice, Gramophone, December 2004

LASSUS: Lagrime di San Pietro Philippe Herreweghe This cycle of 21 spiritual madrigals for seven voices is at once the swansong of the most famous composer of his time, who died in 1594 at the age of 62 just three weeks after dedicating the work to the Pope, and the highpoint of Counter-Reformation polyphony. More than four centuries later, the ‘Tears of St Peter’ still have the power to move. This title was released for the first time in 1994.

He was an early pioneer in editing Baroque scores: from a new edition to honour the F. Couperin tercentenary (1968) based on scholarly re-examination of the original engraved scores to the monumental task of preparing a new edition (from existing editions) of the 555 sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti in 11 volumes. Gilbert also edited the complete harpsichord works of Jean-Henri d'Anglebert, Bach's Goldberg Variations, Frescobaldi's first and second books of toccatas and Rameau's complete harpsichord works. In 1968, he gave his first recital in London and undertook an international career. Stephen Plaistow in Gramophone (May 1973) said: 'Kenneth Gilbert's achievement... is to rescue the music from a small circle of connoisseurs and to make it... universally enjoyable. He does so by harnessing the discipline of scholarship to his flair for performing the music... Not since Thurston Dart... has there been such a fruitful coincidence of the scholar's mind and the performer's fingers in this field'. He has made well over 50 recordings on the Harmonia Mundi and Archiv labels, as well as a host of more specialised lines. He has focused on French music and many of his recordings are considered standards. Originally issued in 1994. ALSO AVAILABLE: HMD9909036 Kenneth Gilbert harpsichord & organ. Music Lessons [dvd]

Label: harmonia mundi File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: HMA1951758 Barcode: 3149020175835 BUDGET Price Format: 1 CD Emmanuelle Bertrand [cello] Pascal Amoyel [piano]
"French cellist Emmanuelle Bertrand follows up her critically acclaimed debut disc for Harmonia Mundi with Liszt’s cello and piano works (chiefly transcriptions) and a brilliantly impassioned realisation of the Sonate de concert by Charles-Valentin Alkan. This formidably taxing work was written in 1856 for the cello virtuoso Franchomme, for whom Chopin had previously composed his own valedictory Sonata. It demands enormous stamina and masterful technique. Bertrand possesses both, with the courage, flair and insight required to make this patchwork of Semitic introspection and inflammatory virtuosity take flight. Her rapturous treatment of the deeply contemplative Adagio is very fine indeed...Bertrand is on magisterial form throughout this rarity... Bertrand’s eruptive Alkan performance is astounding, however, and unrivalled in the catalogue." BBC Music Magazine *****/**** This title was released for the first time in 2001.

It is coupled here with Violin Concerto no.1 and Symphony No.80.

Michael Dervan, Irish Times, 9 October 2009 "Freiburger Barockorchester storm through two of Haydn's most startling symphonies. No. 49, 'La Passione', is held as a prime example of Sturm und Drang, though No. 80 more than equals it in terms of contrasting sonorities, styles and textures, from the ländler interruptions of the first movement to the proto-Beethovenian harmonies of the menuetto. Played by Gottfried van der Goltz, the First Violin Concerto is a temperate oasis." Anna Picard, Independent on Sunday, 8 November 2009

HAYDN: Symphonies 92, 93, 97, 98 & 99 London Symphony Orchestra Sir Colin Davis The late Sir Colin Davis and the London Symphony Orchestra present a collection of Haydn’s London Symphonies alongside the spirited Oxford Symphony. Sir Colin Davis was long recognised as a pre-eminent Haydn interpreter. During his Indian summer with the orchestra he recorded both 'The Creation' and 'The Seasons' for LSO Live. The symphonies presented here were recorded in 2011 and make for revelatory listening. Entering a new chapter after the death of Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, Haydn’s forward-looking late symphonies were conceived on a large scale and exude all the hallmarks of the composer’s protean maturity. Surpassing even his own high standards and received to an enormous success, their expressive strength and inventive mastery of form gave his international reputation a substantial boost: Haydn’s contrapuntal mastery and thematic rigour are laid bare for all to see.

Concert Reviews: "First, though, there was Haydn: the first of his London symphonies, No 93 in D major, the one with the fruity bassoon interjection at the end of the slow movement. Here, as with Mozart, Davis spurns the spare style beloved of younger conductors, influenced by the period-instrument movement; he has conducted these symphonies all his life, and the result had a glowing coherence and warmth." The Guardian **** "It says a lot about the orchestral climate today that a respectable performance of a work by Haydn, who exemplified respectable 18th-century society better than anyone else, should shock. But shock it did to hear the three-four first movement of Haydn’s Symphony in C, No 97, performed with so much orchestral weight and focus on beauty of sound." The Arts Desk "Colin Davis is alive to every nuance of Haydn’s late masterpiece. The conductor’s lightness of touch allows the music to flow like quicksilver … The soloists are also on beguiling form … Sir Colin, revelling in his glorious Indian summer with the LSO, points heavenwards in this visionary reading of Haydn’s late masterpiece" Classic FM Magazine, ***** Editor’s Choice (The Seasons)

In their third disc for Delphian, Ludus Baroque and five stellar soloists bring to life Handel’s rarely heard final oratorio, a remarkable Protestant re-casting of a work written 50 years earlier to a text by the young composer’s Roman patron Cardinal Pamphili. Compelled by Time and Truth to accept the divine order of change and decay, Beauty ultimately gives way – as with the aging composer himself – to an assertion of redemption by good works, reflected in the incorporation of choruses Handel had written for the Foundling Hospital. The resulting work, neglected by centuries of scholarship on account of its hybrid origins, here proves an extraordinary feast of riches, and the ideal vehicle for Richard Neville-Towle’s carefully assembled cast of exceptional soloists, vigorous, intelligent chorus and an orchestra made up from some of the UK’s leading period instrumentalists. Formed in 1998 under the direction of Richard Neville-Towle, this ‘crack group of British early musickers’ (The New York Times) prides itself on the exuberance and energy of its performances, specialising in great works of the early music repertoire. With sisters Mary and Sophie Bevan (the latter having just been shortlisted for an RPS award) jousting with one another in the roles of Deceit and Beauty, these discs make for revelatory listening. This groundbreaking programme from Geoffrey Webber’s consistently inventive choir seeks to recreate three distinct sound-worlds: 7th-century hymns from Iona, 10th-century chants from Celtic foundations in Switzerland, and 14th-century Columban antiphons from the Inchcolm libellus. As well as the evidence of early notation and of drawings and other indications of instrumentation, the performance styles – developed in an exciting extended collaboration with scholar and piper Barnaby Brown – are informed by oral traditions from as far afield as Sardinia and the Outer Hebrides. The Choir have often specialised in the rediscovery of forgotten choral repertories, including previously unpublished music from within the English choral tradition and beyond, and their five recordings on Delphian reflect this. Among the accolades their previous releases have received, their 2011 recording of music by the leading British composer Judith Weir (Delphian DCD34095) was BBC Music Magazine’s Choral and Song Choice in December 2011. The choir has also joined together with the Choir of King’s College London in two recording projects. Songs of love have been written from the earliest records of human existence. None are more passionately ecstatic than the Song of Solomon, which occupies a unique place in the Holy Bible in both style and content. It contains lyric poems of love and courtship, as might have been sung at Jewish weddings. For Christians, these poems speak to the beauty of the union of Christ and his ‘bride’, the Church. The present collection presents a diverse group of choral works written between the 16th century and the present day, with most inspired by this unique sacred text. Following the scandalous 'Salome', it was with the radical, expressive violence of 'Elektra' in 1909 that Richard Strauss finally cemented his position as the leading German opera composer of his generation. The immense vocal and orchestral demands it makes remain undiminished and few singers have really been able to meet the murderous challenge of singing the title role. In the 1960s and ’70s, however, Birgit Nilsson was one, possessing as she did a powerful voice also capable of much subtlety. This live recording from the Vienna State Opera in 1965, in a production by Wieland Wagner, was conducted by the great Karl Böhm, and was a musical triumph. Not only did Böhm and Nilsson give full rein to the eruptive violence of Strauss’s setting but they also attended to the psychological details that the composer teased out of Hoffmansthal's text. They were aided in this by the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and a cast that was homogeneous right down to the smallest roles. Leonie Rysanek sang the wistful Chrysothemis, in a role she made her own, and with her luminous soprano she was an ideal counterpart to Nilsson’s tortured heroine. As their adversary, their inscrutable mother Klytämnestra, the dusky-timbred Regina Resnik gave a superb performance. For the adulterous lover Aegisth, the State Opera engaged the legendary heldentenor Wolfgang Windgassen. WAGNER: Arias & excerpts from Tannhäuser, Tristan & Götterdämmerung Heidi Melton Orchestre National de Bordeaux Aquitaine Paul Daniel Released to coincide with the opening of the 2014-2015 opera season in Bordeaux and to continue the celebration of the Wagner bicentenary, Paul Daniel accompanies the young American dramatic soprano Heidi Melton who has been called “the Wagnerian voice we have been waiting for since Flagstad and Nilsson” (La Presse), and a voice that is “big, gleaming and tonally resplendent.” (San Francisco Chronicle). Ms. Melton sang her first 'Siegfried' Brünnhilde in concert with Opéra National de Bordeaux, as well as the “Immolation Scene” and “Liebestod” for Wagner concerts in Bordeaux and on tour in France. From the most vibrant pages of 'Tristan and Isolde' to the wonder of the 'Twilight of the Gods', through the famous overture to 'Tannhäuser', here are some captivating aspects of the master of Bayreuth's art which are played by an enthusiastic Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine.

"This could perhaps be the Wagnerian voice we have been waiting for since Flagstad and Nilsson.” Claude Gingras, La Presse, July 12, 2010 “Remember the name Heidi Melton. The American dramatic soprano, just 28, has a glorious career ahead of her. Elisabeth's ringing “Dich, teure Halle” from Tannhäuser and Sieglinde's more sombre and emotional “Der Männer Sippe” and “Du bist der Lenz” from Die Walküre displayed a huge voice that is bright, clear and sweet, and cocooned in a seductive vibrato. She has gorgeous low notes, beautiful phrasing, and interprets her singing from her soul.” Paula Citron, The Globe and Mail, July 11, 2010 “Everybody involved in the BBC SSO’s opening concert on Thursday night gets five stars, a metaphorical bottle of champagne and thunderous applause such as can resound only in the City Hall. (Well they did get that at least.)…And what performances from these huge voices, with Heidi Melton’s Sieglinde…” Michael Tumelty, The Herald Scotland, October 4, 2010

Les Siècles François Xavier Roth One of the biggest scandals in the history of music stirred Paris as the Ballets Russes created the new ballet by Igor Stravinsky and Vaslav Nijinsky, 'The Rite of Spring', conducted by Pierre Monteux. To celebrate this anniversary, François- Xavier Roth, with special permission from Boosey & Hawkes and with the assistance of musicologist Louis Cyr, have endeavored to restore the 'Rite' as it was given on the evening of May 29 1913.

"One of François-Xavier Roth's first releases with the period instruments of his orchestra, les Siècles, was the complete Firebird ballet. Here they complete their trilogy of the great scores that Stravinsky composed for the Paris seasons of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes before the first world war, all played, as is the Siècles way, on instruments that come as close as is possible to those used at their first performances. Those who heard Roth and his orchestra perform The Rite of Spring at last year's Proms will remember the lithe transparency they brought to the score, the subtle shading and shifted emphases that dispel any hint of mechanistic brutalism.. But it's the Petrushka that's the real revelation here. Roth's restraint, and the elegance his woodwind players bring to their contributions, pays real dividends. The score emerges as a more fascinating than usual intersection between Stravinsky's Rimsky-tinged Russian heritage, the groundbreaking modernism that he was establishing for himself, and the French refinement that he was absorbing in Paris." Pilar Lorengar [1928-1996], the Spanish singer whose adopted home city was Berlin, especially owed her worldwide but unobtrusive fame to the operatic stage. She had one of the most beautiful voices heard in the post-war years: creamy-toned and perfectly placed, her voice remained firm and youthful in timbre for more than 30 years. She was famous for a repertoire ranging from the youthful heroines of Mozart, the youthful dramatic heroines of Verdi and Puccini to tragic girlish figures such as Tchaikovsky‘s Tatiana and Janácek‘s Jenufa. These three CDs of arias and Lieder contain sound documents from the singer‘s early Berlin years, in studio and live recordings made between 1959 and 1962. Audite present Lorengar from unusual perspectives, both in the field of opera and in the Lieder eg she is not heard here in her established Mozart role of Donna Elvira, but as Donna Anna. In addition, she can be heard singing repertoire that was unusual for her: the prayer "Casta Diva" from Bellini‘s Norma, "Piangerò la sorte mia“ from Handel‘s Cleopatra and a Handel cantata; an aria from a Scarlatti opera; Elvira's aria "Ernani, involiami" from the eponymous early Verdi opera and the role of Rosario from the opera 'Goyescas' by Granados. The Mozart singer also reveals herself here to be an agreeable Lied singer. The remaining two thirds of this anthology pays homage to the musical traditions of her homeland. As a young schoolgirl in Madrid, she acquired extensive experience in the music cafes and the zarzuela theatre. In the present release, she unfolds a panorama of Spanish music history extending over five centuries, ranging from the vocal art of the 16th-century vihuelistas to the folklore collections and adaptations of Federico García Lorca. SCHOENBERG: Pierrot Lunaire Three Times Seven Poems from Albert Giraud’s melodrama, op. 21
Helga Pilarczyk Pierre Boulez WERGO's studio reihe series continues with a rather special CD release: Arnold Schoenberg's 'Pierrot lunaire' was the first long-playing record released by the newly founded label WERGO in 1962, which laid the foundation of the label's decades-long commitment to new music. This important recording, with the soprano Helga Pilarczyk and under the direction of Pierre Boulez, has not been available until now as Wergo releases this highlight from its early days in excellent sound quality on CD for the first time. The musical setting of 'Three Times Seven Poems from Albert Giraud’s ‘Pierrot lunaire’' Op. 21 was composed by Schoenberg in just a few weeks, between 12 March and 30 May 1912, to be precise. The composition was written at the initiative of the actress Albertine Zehme. Schoenberg met her shortly after he had moved to Vienna from Berlin in 1911 and dedicated the piece to her “with heartfelt friendship”.

BEETHOVEN: Sonata No. 29 Op. 106 'Hammerklavier' Live in London 18/6/1976
Sviatoslav Richter Sviatoslav Richter tackled repertoire from Bach to Webern, but he is most certainly not held to be a Schnabel, a Backhaus or a Fischer, that is, a performer who is identified with the Viennese classical composers. Yet Richter’s Beethoven repertoire includes 22 of the 32 sonatas and several series of variations. Recently the Richter estate has given the stamp of approval to recordings from France. [Praga Digitals] Now from Italian sources it has begun to authorise some public concert recordings of quality to document the many-faceted personality that is Richter. This performance of the 'Hammerklavier' is, without any doubt, epic, taken live from the Royal Festival Hall, 18th June 1976. Elegantly packaged.

JANACEK: String Quartets 1 & 2, Piano Concertino Quatuor Prazak An unusual late Janacek chamber programme including the Concertino: an adventurous, amazingly experimental work. Its ‘programme’ recalls the naturalism and anthropomorphisms of the adventures of the 'Cunning Little Vixen' and the concluding Allegro, opening with an unpredictable, almost swaggering recitative, is progressively hinged on an increasingly rapid rhythm that leads to a popular scene of jubilation that foreshadows the fanfares of the 'Glagolitic Mass'.

The genre of the string trio is not noted for many brilliant works, but for certain special ones. When the Thibaud Trio was founded in 1994 at the Hochschule (today: Universität) der Künste Berlin, its goal was to bring these works out of the shadows of musical life. The ensemble now crowns 20 years of performing in Europe, the USA and Japan with a CD on the Audite label. Four string trios, written during the first third of the last century, reveal the breadth of possibilities of this genre, comprising an elegant game with tradition (Dohnányi), the ideal of a systematic formation of impulsive music (Reger), and a pièce de résistance in virtuosity and colour by Ravel’s contemporary Jean Cras. Today the Jacques Thibaud String Trio regularly tours Europe, Japan and North America. The centrepiece of the trio’s concert activities is North America where the ensemble has appeared at hundreds of concert venues during its career. Luc FERRARI: Exercises d'improvisation A la recherche du rythme perdu [1978] for piano & tape
Ciro Longobardi
Label: Stradivarius File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: STR33968 Barcode: 8011570339683 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Ciro Longobardi [prepared piano]
From the liner notes by Ciro Longobardi: This CD includes the live recording of a concert given on December 17, 2011 at Area Sismica in ForlÏ (Italy). Before the mixing, very few micro-editing interventions were made and the applause was cut away (except the final burst). The Exercises can be realised by any number of instruments up to a maximum of 8 plus the 'tape' [nowadays we could call it prerecorded elctronics]...In short a compositional approach, the possibility of a predetermined organization of the materials comes into play. Ferrari himself does not exclude this aspect, on the contrary he integrates it saying the exercises can be either of improvisation or of composition... A la recherche du rythme perdu concerns a different ambit. The prerecorded part was already used for a 1972 work, 'Musique Socialiste' for harpsichord and tape. It was addressed to interpreters coming from classical music, while 'A la recherche' is intended for musicians coming from jazz... As a classical, not-jazz but improvising musician, I believed I was a possible addressee of this piece. I followed the small notated parts until I felt the need to go on my way...to match the composer's preference for a piano and percussion realisation, I extensively used prepared and inside piano techniques. Luc Ferrari ( 1929 – 2005) was a French-born composer of Italian heritage, particularly noted for his tape music. He studied the piano under Alfred Cortot, musical analysis under Olivier Messiaen, and composition under Arthur Honegger. He was profoundly influenced by Varese's 'DÊserts' and by John Cage. Ferrari's 'Presque rien No. 1 'Le Lever du jour au bord de la mer'' (1970) is regarded as a classic of its kind. In it, Ferrari takes a day-long recording of environmental sounds at a Yugoslavian beach and, through editing, makes a piece that lasts just 21 minutes. It has been seen as an affirmation of John Cage's idea that music is always going on all around us, and if only we were to stop to listen.

The Livre Vermeil de Montserrat is to medieval music what St John Passion is to the Baroque. In a real tribute to Catalonia, the programme also includes, from the venerable codex Montserrat, a refined interpretation of "Song of the Sibylle" and ends with the popular estampa " Els Segadors" a modernised version of which has become the national anthem of Catalonia. The eight artists from La Camera delle Lacrime enjoyed a live session recorded by France Musique at the festival Sinfonia en Périgord to create this programme with the label Paraty. The original instrumentarium, including using an Argentinian drum called Bombo leguëro, offers a new reading of these devotional songs where the interpretations are resolutely popular and festive. This exaltation of the pilgrim, who finally reaches the end of his journey to the monastery of Montserrat, is expressed by the talented young Dordogne choir. Performances of this repertoire in central France have conquered a wide audience, with hundreds of amateur singers on stage to embody the voices of pilgrims alongside professional artists. Artistic directors Bruno Bonhoure (vocals and musical direction) and Khai Luong-dong (design and staging) offer music lovers an enthusiastic and bold version of this essential Medieval heritage.

The Parisian bassoon maker Jean Nicolas Savary jeune was considered the 'Stradivari of the Bassoon' during the 19th century. His bassoons were in great demand in France and England, and instruments were built according to his models up until the early 20th century. It is all the more astonishing, therefore, that no Savary bassoon had until now been reconstructed: a gap that has been filled by the Swiss bassoon maker Walter Bassetto in cooperation with the bassoonist Lyndon Watts. A reconstruction of an instrument from the year 1823 can be heard on this CD; it is especially convincing by virtue of its effortless response and its nasally pithy yet lyrical sound. The extraordinary qualities of the Savary bassoon are particularly shown to advantage in works by Beethoven and Reicha, as well as two adaptations from operas of Rossini and Donizetti. The performer is the Australian Lyndon Watts, who was a prize winner at the ARD Competition in 2002 and was appointed solo bassoonist with the Munich Philharmonic at the age of just 22. He is accompanied by Edoardo Torbianelli, an established specialist for historical keyboard instruments.

BRUCKNER: Symphony No.7 Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Zubin Mehta For the Israel Philharmonic, performing Bruckner has been somewhat controversial, due to Bruckner's unrequited status as a Nazi idol: as an unworldly man in late 19th-century Vienna, he became inveigled in the musical and political controversies of the day, finding himself enlisted as a partisan of Wagner against the Brahms faction, never quite extricating himself, even after death. Surprisingly, this is only Zubin Mehta's fourth recording of the Symphony No.7, and the only one currently in print. This live performance from the Smolartz Auditorium, July 2012, features the 1944 edition of Robert Haas.

From 1608 Frescobaldi was the organist at St Peter's Basilica in Rome. In 1615 a new basilica was built with two fine organs upon which Frescobaldi performed his famous improvisatory toccatas during ceremonial occasions but he was also expected to provide vocal and choral works for his patron, the Ferrara based Este efamily. It is likely that the Mass 'Sopra l’aria della Monica' was performed in the basilica and based on a popular tune. The 'aria della Monica' was a secular song, quite often used for keyboard variations and instrumental compositions. The mass reflects common practice in Rome in that is scored for eight voices in two choirs and is a beautifully crafted example of late 17th-century Italian church music. Amongst the singers are such familiar names as Rossana Bertini, Giuseppe Maletto (both La Venexiana, La Compagnia del madrigale), Marco Beasley, or Furio Zanasi. Musical direction is in the able hands of Alessandro De Marchi. Formerly available on the Symphonia label, recorded in 1993. Virtually no competition.

After Sherlock Holmes solved the theft of the Bruce-Partington plans, he finished a paper on the motets of Orlando di Lasso and boasted that it was the "final word upon the subject." Currende Vocal Ensemble and Concerto Palatino are in fine form on this disc and together they present the listener with a very beguiling 'walk through' the motets of Orlando di Lasso. The cover shows Lassus directing his singers and musicians at the Munich court from a spinet. Recorded in 1998 for the Accent label

Leonardo da Vinci, Heinrich Isaac and Josquin des Prez were contemporaries. Leonardo's reknown amongst his contemporaries was based as much on his musical abilities as those in any other field and he is known to have been familiar with the compositions of Josquin and Isaac. While Josquin was to continue to be hailed as the Michelangelo of music for centuries after his death before succumbing to the same lapse into obscurity as Isaac, prosperity has been kinder to Leonardo. Perhaps if Leonardo's 'Treatise on Music', referred to in his writings but lost, had survived maybe the revival of the reputations of his musical contemporaries might have happened sooner, for this was an age in which music flourished as much as painting. The polyphonic complexity of music reached a zenith in this age that has never since been equalled. Heinrich Isaac's 'Choralis Constantinus' is one of the greats of Renaissance polyphony: The small segment included on this disk is enough to make one crave a boxed set of the whole. The motet 'Miserere mei Deus' by Josquin des Prez is one of his most expressive, and the 'Lamentationes' by the nearly unknown composer Bernhard Ycart demonstrates once again that we've probably lost more splendid music than we've saved. [Previously available on Christophorus c2002 with the title 'Lamentatio']

Press reviews for the original release on Symphonia, 1996: "Joachim Held has a refreshing and virtuosic manner to approach this music, probably comparable to Paul O' Dette's playing. He doesn't indulge in the lute players' caprice to play every harmony with an arpeggio slowing down and putting a veil on the flow of the music. Instead he chooses lively tempi, doesn't consider the word virtuoso as a devil's creation from the 19th century and shapes these master works he is dealing with, consistently and in a transparent way. Being played legato, not staccato, the melodies sound and thereby can be followed through the plait of voices and accompanied on their way by the listener." Gitarre und Laute, February 1997 "... Joachim Held's playing is a real pleasure to listen to. He brings out the character of each piece, from the fluid improvisatory virtuosy of Francesco's Fantasias and ricercars, to the more formally structured fantasias of Paladino, and the rhythmic vitality and energy of Borrono's dance forms. Throughout this recording Joachim Held makes effective use of tonal and dynamic contrast and shows excellent control of tempo and rubato without ever sounding self - indulgent. In the contrapunctual works he shows an impressive control of the different voices of a composition - demonstrated to particular good effect in Paladino's intabulation of "Anchor che col partire" in which the part writing of the underlying madrigal is never less than crystal clear..."
