Llibre Vermell de Montserrat Red Book of Montserrat

Hespèrion XXI / La Capella Reial de Catalunya / Jordi Savall Jordi Savall had every historical, geographical and emotional reason to pay a well deserved tribute to one of the most famous manuscripts of ancient music. The 'Llibre Vermell de Montserrat' is a collection of devotional texts containing late medieval songs and dances. The 14th-century manuscript was compiled in and is still located at the monastery of Montserrat outside Barcelona in Catalonia (Spain). The title describes the red binding in which the collection was placed in the 19th century. The songs were written in Catalan, in Occitan and in Latin for the pilgrims to have something appropriately «chaste and pious» to sing and dance. In this beautiful live recording made at the Santa Maria del Pi church in Barcelona, the colorful succession of songs and dances offers us a pleasant trip to the heart of the medieval music.

BEETHOVEN: Complete Sonatas & Variations for Cello & piano Ralph Kirschbaum Shai Wosner

Label: Onyx Classics File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: ONYX4178 Barcode: 880040417828 2 FOR 1.5 Price Format: 2 CD Packaging: cristal Ralph Kirschbaum [cello] Shai Wosner [piano]

Beethoven’s sonatas for cello and piano span his entire creative life. The Op.5 sonatas date from the late 1790s and therefore are products of his early years as a virtuoso pianist and aspiring composer in Vienna, where he had settled after leaving his native Bonn. The 3rd sonata Op.69 dates from the composer’s ‘middle period’, and is contemporary with the 4th and 5th Symphonies and the Razumovsky String Quartets. It is one of his greatest chamber compositions, a work of great beauty, full of surprises and seemingly limitless inventiveness. The two sonatas of Op102 were composed at the beginning of Beethoven’s visionary ‘late period’ and rub shoulders with the last violin sonata, the piano sonatas Nos.27, 28 and 29 ’Hammerklavier’. Beethoven’s later fascination with the baroque fugue surfaces not only at the end of the ‘Hammerklavier’ but also in the finale of the 5th sonata, reaching its apex in the Grosse Fugue’ Op.133 a few years later. These performances were recorded immediately after live performances at Wigmore Hall, the culmination of a tour of all 5 Sonatas and the Variations across the USA and the UK in conjunction with Texas-born, Ralph Kirschbaum's 70th birthday. Sonata No.1 in F op 5/1 Sonata No.2 in G minor op 5/2 Sonata No.3 in A op 69 Sonata No.4 in C op 102/1 Sonata No.5 in D op 102/2 Variations on ‘See the conqu’ring hero comes’ WoO45 Variations on ‘Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen’ op 66 Variations on ‘Bei Männern’ WoO46 $GYHUWLVHG LQ %%& 0XVLF 0DJD]LQH www.facebook.com/onyxclassics

SAINT-SAENS: Mélodies Tassis Christoyannis Camille Saint-Saëns, a legendary figure of Romanticism, composed more than 150 mélodies, reflecting his love of poetry and the French language. At the heart of this catalogue, four cycles stand out, falling perfectly within the golden age of French song (1870-1920). The first cycle, the 'Mélodies persanes' (1870), sets to music the loveliest poems by the Parnassian poet Armand Renaud (Nuits persanes). 'La Cendre rouge' (1914) bears witness to a close collaboration with Georges Docquois, the 'Cinq mélodies de Ronsard' and 'Vieilles Chansons', composed the very year of his death (1921) are settings of Renaissance poets: Ronsard, Belleau, de la Fresnaye, and d'Orléans. "May music and poetry someday understand that they would be well advised to lean on each other! May poets learn music and musicians study poetry! They have everything to gain. Musicians must be firmly convinced of the truth that a beautiful verse is not a simple pretext for music; it is a diamond that the musician must set as best he can, to show it to full advantage. As for poets, one day they will notice that music makes possible all sorts of combinations that are forbidden to them without it." Camille Saint-Saëns

He proves a natural story-teller in the La Fontaine fables…the Nouvelles chansons glitter with elegance and bawdy wit and his intimate, caressing way with the Hugo and Baudelaire settings is utterly captivating and at times very sexual…[Cohen] plays everything with admirable limpidity and poise. Genuine charm is a rare quality, but it’s one that Godard and Christoyannis possess in spades. A beautiful disc, highly recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2016 [AP123 Godard Mélodies] “The arrival of a fine melodie singer is always a cause of celebration. Tassis Christoyannis has a baritone voice that moves smoothly from the most elegant, caressing pianissimo, at times reminiscent of Gerard Souzay, to a commanding fortissimo. In addition, his words are the clearest I've heard in this repertory for a very long time, and he uses them with great intelligence…” BBC Music Magazine, January 2016 [AP110 Lalo Complete Songs]

MAHLER: Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection'

Majestic and profoundly moving, Mahler's 2nd Symphony ('Resurrection') constitutes one of the towering monuments of late-19th-century symphonic music and is one of the composer's most popular works. Jean-Claude Casadesus chose this work, which has accompanied him for many years, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of his Orchestre National de Lille. This version, recorded live in the Auditorium du Nouveau Siècle in November 2015, is a deeply moving expression of the maestro's love for this immense composer. In 1976, with the support of the States and of the Nord-pas-de-Calais region Jean-Claude Casadesus created Orchestre National de Lille, which since has become a reference radiating in the heart of its region as well as the rest of France and abroad.

FALLA: Solo Piano Works El Amor brujo, El Sombrero de tres picos, 4 Pièzas españolas Homenaje [Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy], Canto de los Remeros del Volga Pour le tombeau de Paul Dukas

Wilhelm Latchoumia

Label: La Dolce Volta File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: LDV27 Barcode: 3770001901473 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Wilhelm Latchoumia [piano]

Manuel de Falla’s first instrument was the piano. The four landscapes in sound of the 'Cuatro piezas españolas' pay tribute to Isaac Albéniz. Starting out from the black-and-white keyboard, he imagined the colours of his orchestra – vivid, dry, crackling like an immense ensemble of timbral percussion. The ascetic precision of de Falla's musical thought is embodied in the 'Fantasía bætica', ruled by a murderous sun, but his creative imagination also reconstituted the neo-Baroque tone of 'El sombrero de tres picos' in instrumental writing that harks back to Scarlatti. Yet this pianistic world is above all that that of Gypsy Andalusia. When the composer decided to make a digest for piano of the original version for small orchestra of 'El amor brujo' that did not limit itself to the brio of the Ritual Fire Dance, the result was a genuinely theatrical piece, sublimating the whole culture of cante jondo, transporting the listener into the magic circle of flamenco, piano-guitar, piano-voice. Wilhem Latchoumia’s brilliant and profound playing illuminates every aspect of this immemorial and multiple Spain. 1-4 Cuatro piezas españolas: I. Aragonesa II. Cubana III. Montanesa IV. Label: Praga Digitals File Under: Classical/Orchestral Catalogue No: DSD350135 Barcode: 3149028087420 NORMAL Price Format: 1 SACD Packaging: cristal Philharmonia Carlo Maria Giulini

A tribute to Carlo Maria Giulini (1914-2005), equally famous as opera conductor (Falstaff, Don Carlos, Don Giovanni, etc.) and orchestra conductor. Walter Legge invited him to conduct ‘his’ Philharmonia Orchestra in London, whose brass section was created by Dennis Brain (1921-57). Giulini proceeded to demystify Mahler’s respectful re-orchestration of Schumann’s Rhenish Symphony, proving one could pass from the waldhorn to the modern French horn. 30 years after Schumann, the young Tchaikovsky wanted the naturalness of the former plus the virtuosity of the latter – the magic of the sound of the horn. Giulini expanded his repertoire at a careful pace, not conducting the symphonies of Mozart and Beethoven until the 1960s. During this time he was in great demand as a guest conductor of leading orchestras around the world, and made numerous well-received recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London and several others.Overall, his impact on the musical world of the mid-to-late 20th century is summed up by Anthony Tommasini in his New York Times obituary of 2005: "Far from being an autocratic conductor or a kinetic dynamo of the podium, Mr. Giulini was a probing musician who achieved results by projecting serene authority and providing a model of selfless devotion to the score. His symphonic performances were at once magisterial and urgent, full of surprise yet utterly natural. He brought breadth and telling detail to the operas of Mozart and Verdi." 1 SCHUMANN: Manfred Op. 115, 3-4 June 1958 2-6 SCHUMANN: Symphony No. 3 Op. 97 'Rhenish' orch. by Mahler, [Original Columbia Gramophone Company] 7-10 TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 2 Op. 17 'Little Russian', 29 September 1956

MOZART: Piano Concertos 27 & 12, BARTOK: Piano Concerto No. 1 Rudolf Serkin plays Austro-Hungarian Piano Concertos

Rudolf Serkin It is often forgotten that Rudolf Serkin (1903-91) originally came from Central Europe, received his musical training in Vienna, and promoted the music of Schoenberg, Reger and Bartók before embarking on a career in the United States. There he became a key player in the musical world and an influential teacher (in Philadelphia, Marlboro, the Curtis Institute, etc.). Like Annie Fischer, Geza Anda and Daniel Barenboim, he was able to convey the unexpected spiritual link between Mozart’s giocoso and Bartok’s night music. Here, the consummate interpreter of Beethoven returns to his musical roots.
