Giaches de WERT: Divine Theatre Sacred Motets
Stile Antico Franco-Flemish composer Giaches de Wert wrote a considerable amount of sacred music during the late Renaissance, but little of it was published during his lifetime. Only three books of motets were released in 1566 and 1581. Stile Antico's new album introduces us to another side of this composer who, though Flemish-born, spent most of his life in Italy, primarily in Mantua, where he was to remain for the rest of his life, though not without maintaining connections (both musical and, during the mid-late 1580s, romantic) with the court at Ferrara, where the lively musical life must have been a welcome distraction from his not-always-happy existence at the Mantuan court. The unique and dramatic style of these remarkable motets cannot fail to ravish explorers of this 'divine theatre'.

SAINT-SAENS: Cello Concerto No.1 Op.33 Sonata for cello and piano No.2 Op.123, Sonata for cello and piano No.3 Op. posth., unfinished
Emmanuelle Bertrand Pascal Amoyel Luzerner Sinfonieorchester James Gaffigan "That’s it done at last, this blasted sonata! Will it please or not? That is the question." So wrote Saint-Saëns, not without humour, of his second ‘quadruped’ for cello and piano. He adored the cello, as is shown by much more than the famous 'Swan'. He wrote three sonatas for it, but unfortunately the last two movements of the Third Sonata have been lost and what is left survives only in manuscript. Emmanuelle Bertrand and Pascal Amoyel play it here with emotion and total respect. The Concerto also included here is today one of the ‘musts’ of the concertante repertory for cello.

Domenico ZANATTA: Venezia – Cantatas & Sonatas Musica Fiorita Daniela Dolci Little is known about the life of Domenico Zanatta (c1665-1748). He was most probably born in Venice, as the title pages of his manuscripts seem to attest, printing his first collection of sonatas at the tender age of 24. However, he also had a second endeavour and a great mastery of the cantata genre where his melodic inventiveness freely flows, continuing the tradition of his Venetian colleagues in a worthy way. Flavio Ferri-Benedetti and Musica Fiorita, under Daniela Dolci, present some of his pieces interspersed with works by Cavalli, Strozzi, who was a pupil of Cavalli, and Fontana: a pioneer of the, then new, stile recitativo.

DVORAK: Piano Trios, Op. 65 & 90 Trio Wanderer The Trio Wanderer pays tribute to Dvořák and his last two trios. Alongside the sombre interiority and fiery intensity of the Trio No.3 in F minor, this programme presents a new version of the famous Dumky Trio, to which the Wanderers owed their first great success on record. Passionate and melancholy by turns, it is also the most innovative and the freest of Dvořák’s trios. A fine symbol for the Trio Wanderer, which has just reached its 30th year of existence without ever ceasing to surprise and touch us. Happy anniversary and hats off!

Several masses scored for large forces attest to the outstanding compositional skills of the Salzburg master Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704). For Salzburg Cathedral, Biber prepared polychoric pieces modelled on the grand performance practice in Venice. The 'Missa Alleluja' was probably composed after 1690 and certainly before 1698: the original score from Salzburg is lost but excellent copies have been preserved at the Upper Austrian abbey at Kremsmünster, which serve as a basis for the present recording. Biber fully exploited the possibilities of Baroque instrumentation in the Missa Alleluja: a chorus with 2 sopranos, 2 altos, 2 tenors and 2 bass voices grants him a large number of combinations of voices and thus constant changes of timbre. The strings 'choir' also has six parts, with both violins often written virtuosically. A 'chorus' of 3 trumpets and 2 cornetti is even surpassed in tonal mass by that composed of 2 clarinets, 4 trumpets and timpani. This large number of trumpets emphasises the cheerful character of the work and is luxurious by Austrian standards. 1-14 Missa Alleluja 15 Nisi Dominus 16 Pastorella 17 Hic est panis

Hans SOMMER: Rübezahl und der Sackpfeifer von Neiße Opera in 4 Acts, libretto by Eberhard König [1904] The almost completely forgotten 'Rübezahl und der Sackpfeifer von Neisse' was first performed in 1904 in Brunswick, and in the following year in Berlin and Weimar, under the baton of Richard Strauss, with whom Sommer formed a close friendship. Its special feature is the post-Romantic melodic writing, admittedly with certain foundations in Wagner’s music. It was performed live at Buhnender Stadt, Gera and caught by the microphones of Deutschlandradio Kultur 31st March-2nd April 2016.
Label: Pan Classics File Under: Classical/Opera Catalogue No: PC10367 Barcode: 7619990103672 NORMAL PRICE Format: 3 CD Packaging: digipack Magnus Piontek [Rübezahl] Johannes Beck [Herr Buko] Anne Preuß [Gertrud] Hans-Georg Priese [Wido] Jueun Jeon [Bernhard Kraft] Kai Wefer [Otto Kettner] Alexander Voigt [Hieronymus Stäblein] Philharmonisches Orchester Altenburg-Gera Laurent Wagner [direction]
Love for a woman or loyalty to the people who chose him as their leader in the struggle for freedom against the tyrant this is the dilemma in which the young painter Wido finds himself. Wido's lover, Gertrude, was the daughter of Buko, who cruelly oppressed the population of the city of Neisse, at the foot of the Giant Mountains, and exploited them. In his despair, Wido summons the legendary Berggeist [mountain spirit] Rübezahl, who also appears promptly. Soon Rübezahl assumes the shape of a bagpipe whistle; as a simple musician, and yet brings many things together. Rübezahl, a legendary figure from the Riesengebirge, has fascinated since the Renaissance. Sometimes he takes people off the right path, sometimes he appears as their protector. Often he takes the form of others, drives his trickery, and intervenes in destinies. The opera 'Rübezahl and the bagpipe of Neisse' is also about the power of love, the power of music and the civilising meaning of art. Hans Sommer (1837–1922 Brunswick) saw music evolve from Schumann to Schoenberg, Wagner to Webern. A scientist and mathematician by profession, he turned to music full-time only in his forties. In 1875, Sommer met Richard and Cosima Wagner for the first time and founded a Wagner Association in Brunswick. One year later he visited the first Bayreuth Festival as their guest. In the years that followed, he was part of the group of artists based at Wahnfried, although he tried to avoid being “a blind follower”, as Sommer himself wrote in his memoirs. From 1882 on, he published over one hundred songs and ballads in quick succession. Following the success of his opera 'Loreley', premièred in 1891, and which Richard Strauss presented in Weimar in 1892, he became an established opera composer.
