Last Tour STEVE LACY QUINTET After a long tour of North America starting in summer 2003, this quintet concluded, in March 2004, by playing two concerts in Boston - most of the first one being included here. The material is five of the Beat poems featuring Irene Aebi, plus three instrumentals. After a lot of working together, this group was really both loose and together with everybody playing magnificently. Even Lacy plays superbly, so there is no need to make any allowances for his ill health. In fact, the evening sounds like a very enjoyable occasion, making this CD one of the best of the quintet's latter recordings - an appropriate farewell to a major musician.

Here Comes a New Challenger SIDONY BOX & GIANLUCA PETRELLA An invigorating shot in the arm for those who like their jazz bolstered with a hefty dose of post-rock power. This French three-piece have boosted their own sax-guitar-drums sound with the addition of Italian trombonist Gianluca Petrella on this, their fourth, album. The trombone adds some low end to the group aesthetic, which comes in somewhere between Soft Machine and Sonic Youth. The uncategorisable nature of their music is perhaps best reflected through the band's support slots in France, where they have been invited to open for Magma, The Bad Plus, Meshell Ndege'Ocello and Tigran Hamasyan. “Sidony Box boasts a style that melds jazz, pop and hard, in-your-face rock, bursting with urgency – a blazing and obstreperous crew." Alma de Tango JUAN JOSÉ MOSALINI The Paris-based Argentinian bandoneon maestro presents a very special audio/visual release in collaboration with husband and wife team of vocalist Sandra Rumolino and dancer Jorge Rodriguez. The Alma de Tango CD album was recorded live at the Alhambra in Paris, with an accompanying DVD bringing the intimate live spectacle of the show. Filmed in semi-darkness, this project reveals the powerful yet delicate complexity of the musical-choreographical art of tango - the decor is minimal, a darkness pierced by two lanterns, with two dancers, a singer and an instrumental quartet. Nothing more was needed to bring to life this unforgettable performance.

Songs From Afar LUCIAN BAN / ELEVATION "Songs From Afar is very personal for me because the album is intimately tied to my Romanian cultural heritage and to the jazz influences that help me find out more about where I come from – and where I’m going. It's not only the ancient Transylvanian folk songs that we approach in this recording, it's also how the other pieces and improvisations reflect the constant search for musical meaning," notes Transylvanian expat pianist and composer Lucian Ban talking about his second album with Elevation quartet (and his third album on Sunnyside). Featuring Ban's Elevation quartet of saxophonist Abraham Burton, bassist John Hébert and drummer Eric McPherson with special guest violist Mat Maneri (with whom Ban recorded the Transylvanian Concert album for ECM), Songs From Afar incorporates their extensive knowledge of modern jazz and creative music with the astonishing voice of Transylvanian folk singer Gavril Tarmure to create a program of music with a unique identity that spans continents and styles.

Paquito & Manzanero PAQUITO D'RIVERA Jazz has a long history of interpreting music from the American songbook. Latin America has just as lofty a collection; many of these compositions were written by the tremendous Mexican composer Armando Manzanero. Manzanero’s legacy is well established. He has received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as a singer and composer. Born in Mexico in 1935, Manzanero found success in music early on, from the first song he wrote, at age 15, “Nunca en el Mundo,” which remains a standard. His career blossomed and his wonderful compositions have been performed by a broad array of artists, including Elvis Presley, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Christina Aguilera. For his latest recording, Paquito & Manzanero, the great woodwind master Paquito D’Rivera (himself an impressive 14-time Grammy winner) illuminates the incredible work of Manzanero in Paquito’s favored idiom, Latin jazz. Along with his fantastic ensemble, featuring members like trumpeter Diego Urcola, drummer Antonio Sanchez and Manzanero himself, on vocals. D’Rivera shows why Manzanero has been celebrated across the globe.

People & Places CLEMENS CHRISTIAN PÖTZSCH A tour diary illustrated in music: People and Places, the debut album from award-winning German pianist/composer Clemens Pötzsch. A desire to share his daily musical sketches led Pötzsch to create this forward-thinking album. A love for improvisation, classical music and pop music shines through in this jazz-inspired disc. PR by WildKat PR. • The idea for the album grew from the daily ‘musical snapshots’ which Pötzsch recorded with his phone while touring; a diary in music • Clemens’ background lies across both jazz and contemporary music – two genres which can be heard distinctly in his work • Both his composing and performing work have been recognised with awards in his homeland: the “Burghauser Jazzaward”, the “international piano solo competition award Freiburg” and the “Bremer Jazzpreis”

High Noon KALLE KALIMA Kalle Kalima's music is mean, moody, magnificent, and is also adventurous and full of surprises. Whether he is off exploring the badlands on the borders of rock, putting his hand on his heart to salute his Finnish homeland, or inspiring jazz lawlessness in the band Kuu!, this forty-one year old is first and foremost a free spirit. This album is in the form of a road trip which passes through various landscapes but remains adhered to a tight unifying concept: country-jazz. The thirteen tracks of the album display huge variety, but when taken together almost form a suite. As its central episode, there are four hits from films scored by the distinguished Hollywood film composer Dimitri Tiomkin, including (naturally) “High Noon”, the title theme of the classic western from 1952 starring Gary Cooper. The remaining tracks range from classic Western tunes like “South of the Border”, or the mid-19th century sea shanty “Santy Anno,” to the campfire classic “Ghost Riders In The Sky”. There are also evergreen songs such as The Shadows' “Man of Mystery” and Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah”.

Pocket Rhapsody FRANK WOESTE Frank Woeste is not just an exceptionally fine pianist and a gifted exponent of the Fender Rhodes, he also has a thorough understanding of his own creative process. If all art is about leaving an impression, then Woeste's mission is to etch a deep mark both as a player and as a composer. His debut as an artist on ACT, then, not only reveals a musician brimming with ideas, but also a fully-fledged composer and an extremely adept arranger. His trio with guitarist Ben Monder and drummer Justin Brown creates a sound which is orchestral in its scale and its impact. The intimacy of chamber music goes hand in hand here with the forward propulsion of a jazz trio, and with the power of a big band. In other words, the title “Pocket Rhapsody” gets it right.

Woeste is not short of eminent companions for this voyage. Youn Sun Nah sings “The Star Gazer” with the kind of captivating emotional intensity that might be expected of her. Ibrahim Maalouf contributes his incomparably expressive, orientaltinged trumpet lyricism to the glistening “Moving Light” and to “Nouakchott,” a magical and richly evocative whirring of warm air over the desert sand. The time has come for Frank Woeste to be re-discovered in Germany as a prodigal son, and to be recognized more widely as a prodigious talent. Track listing: 1. Terlingua 6:16 2. Moving Light 6:00 3. Live in Berlin MO' BLOW The four lads of Mo’ Blow have been on their "for those about to Funk" mission for a good decade now. They released their ACT Debut album - with that name - in 2011, and since then they have done well over a hundred gigs, and have travelled to over 20 countries. Felix Falk's distinctive skronk baritone sax hooks, Matti Klein's killer Rhodes, Tobias Fleischer's funktastic bass, and André Seidel's boss drumming... these guys have technique bordering on the scary, but also a ridiculous and infectious sense of fun. Their regular gigging has instilled in them an instinct for showmanship and stagecraft, plus a sixth sense of the right way to construct and to pace their shows. After three studio albums, the time had come for a Mo’ Blow live CD. The intimate space A-Trane Club in Berlin feels like their living room. It was a case of “mind the closing doors, please” - and off they went, straight into frenetic action with the track “Slingshot.” On this new album, Mo’ Blow take you on an hour's ride through their repertoire from the past ten years, culminating in a high-energy work-out on the title track of their most recent studio album, “Gimme the Boots.”
