This production of one of the late masterpieces of Massenet, 'Don Quichotte', in May 2010 from La Monnaie, was the last great role performed by the feted Belgian baritone, José van Dam. This very special context generates a real intensity, enhanced by the stage direction of Laurent Pelly and the expertise of Marc Minkowski in French opera repertoire, following numerous productions by Massenet, Debussy, Meyerbeer, Offenbach, Auber, Boieldieu, Gounod… > The DVD includes a touching documentary on this production. José van Dam was born in Brussels. As a guest in the world’s leading opera houses, he has sung the title roles of countless operas but has become synonymous with Philip [Don Carlos] and Don Quichotte in particular. He has contributed to the success of many opera productions at La Monnaie, where he has also appeared in concerts and recitals. He also performs a vast concert, oratorio and song repertoire and has made many recordings. His cinema appearances include the title role in Gérard Corbiau’s 'Le Maître de musique' (The Music Teacher) and a brilliant Leporello in Joseph Losey’s 'Don Giovanni'. His interpretations have earned him numerous awards. He holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Montreal; the City of Berlin awarded him the honorary title of ‘Kammersänger’; the French Government has appointed him Commandeur des Arts et Lettres; and he has been ennobled by King Albert II of Belgium.

"The French music of the 17th and 18th centuries has changed my life both literally and metaphorically: having trained as a harpist, I never imagined I might one day embark on a singing career. Nevertheless, in an incredibly fertile profusion of music, a series of encounters led me into this Baroque adventure where imagination and rigour call the tune, and permanently influenced my approach to all kinds of music. The triumph of Love... Beyond that slightly pompous formula lies a less optimistic reality. The god of love, mischievous and implacable by turns, holds humanity in his snares. His triumph is rarely that of his victims. My friend and musical partner Jerome and I delighted in exploring together this territory which, if not entirely virgin land, is always surprising, where the hegemony of mere vocalism is banished, where the apparent antagonism between declamation and music is resolved in a perfect balance. How much Lully's Atys has in common with Debussy's Pelleas et Melisande! With this album, I was keen to return to a repertoire that, like Pandora's Box, opened up every conceivable possibility for me." Sandrine Piau, June 2011 Soprano Sandrine Piau's new project is dedicated to French baroque repertoire, offering a wide range of beautiful arias by Rameau, Lully, Campra etc in a 100-year journey that mixes very famous music with little-known pieces, such as arias by Grétry or Sacchini. Sandrine Piau and Jérôme Correas, a former singer, founder and music director of Les Paladins, have worked together on a regular basis since their early careers, especially with William Christie. This new release is the 10th recital of Sandrine Piau on Naïve and 2012 marks the 10th anniversary of their collaboration. LAUNCH CONCERT: WIGMORE HALL 11TH April

The baroque woman was confined to a strictly domestic role. She was either saintly (mother of Christ and the subject of religious allegory as in Handel’s Trionfo del tempo e del disinganno), a diva, a queen (Poppea, Cleopatra) or the inevitable victim in classical tragedies like Semiramis, Berenice, Rodelinda and Agrippina. 'Ladies sing Baroque' is shaped as a nod to those ladies who have enchanted jazz, but composed of music from two centuries earlier: hymns to emotion, the tunes that disturb for eternity! Monteverdi's invention of opera, Vivaldi's music for the Pieta, Pergolesi and Bach bring the drama and emotion found in temples and churches. Highlights include the final duet from 'L'Incorronazione di Poppea' and Bach's sublime 'Erbarme dich' whilst two Canadians with strong characters, Marie-Nicole Lemieux and Karina Gauvin, successfully evoke the legendary association of Marilyn Horne and Montserrat Caballé.

This is the 46th title in the Vivaldi Edition and the 4th volume, out of approximately 12, of the series dedicated to the violin concertos whose manuscripts are held in the National Library of Turin. This series of 7 concertos is an overview of the complete art of Vivaldi as a composer and violinist: large-scale music, invention, expression, energy, power of evocation, played with considerable virtuosity. Riccardo Minasi, 33, is one of the leading Italian baroque violinists and also has a career as a conductor Il Pomo d'Oro is a new baroque orchestra that gathers excellent musicians from several high-level baroque orchestras including Il Complesso Barocco.

VIVALDI: Sonate Da Camera A Tre Op. 1 L'Estravagante In 1705, Giuseppe Sala published in Venice the Suonote do camera a tre, due violini o violone o cembalo op.1 of Antonio Vivaldi. This set of trio sonatas marked the official 'debut' of a composer who was already more than a mere youth (the 'Prete Rosso' was then 27-years old), and probably contains the earliest works of his that have come down to us. It is very likely, though, as Michael Talbot has pointed out, that the copy of 1705 is in fact a reprint of a now lost first edition published in 1703. However that may be, this collection dedicated to the Brescian nobleman Count Annibale Gambara displays a balance - at times, inevitably, somewhat precarious - between reference to codified formulas and models, on the one hand, and the definition of an original expressive voice on the other. In terms of scoring, his Op.1 adopts the recently created Italian format of the trio sonata, the output of which was dominated by the Arcadian reform of Arcangelo Corelli: even in Venice, where a renowned instrumental tradition already existed, Corelli's Opp.1-4 enjoyed almost immediate diffusion and were reprinted by the aforementioned Sala just a few years after the Roman first editions (in 1684, 1686, 1691 and 1695 respectively).

RAVEL: Pavane pour une infante defunte, Miroirs Gaspard de la nuit Anna Vinnitskaya Following a first solo recital (2008) and a successful Ravel-Prokofiev concerto recording (2010), this is the third recording of Russian pianist Anna Vinnitskaya for Naive. The recording presents two of the heights of Ravel's piano repertoire, 'Gaspard de la Nuit' and 'Miroirs', performed many times in recital before this recording. In both works, as well as in the mysterious 'Pavane pour une infant défunte', Anna Vinnitskaya displays the whole range of her skills: intense delicacy, amazing legato and control of dynamics, supple and a strong personal style. Anna Vinnitskaya, aged 29, is developing an intense concert career in Germany, Belgium and the UK. She won First Prize at the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 2007 and an Echo Klassik award (Germany) in 2011 for her latest recording.

Fidelity in our artistic companionship, since Accentus was one of the first ensembles to join Naïve when the label was created in 1999. Diversity, because our shared artistic trajectory has been shaped by a wide variety of repertoires and projects. First of all there was Pascal Dusapin’s Requiem[s], an ongoing success that has reached far beyond the contemporary sphere; then a magnificent programme of a cappella Poulenc; then the bombshell of 'Transcriptions', which is both the group’s and the label’s bestseller to date. After an excursion into Schoenberg with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the year 2003 was marked by Brahms’s German Requiem in its version with piano. In 2005 came the first recording with orchestra under the direction of Laurence Equilbey (Haydn’s Seven Last Words). Since then, our projects have embraced music of the 20th and 21st centuries, key repertoire works (Fauré Requiem), rarely recorded monuments like Richard Strauss’s masterpieces for a cappella choir, a DVD of the 'Transcriptions', a concert of Christmas music for CD and television in 2009, Rachmaninov, Dvorák, Mendelssohn… Happy Birthday to all the artists who participated in the adventure of the first 20 years and here's to the next 20.

In the 18th century, 1,300 years after the last Olympic Games in ancient times, the Olympic theme was highly fashionable. Many composers based operas on the libretto to 'L'Olimpiade' by Metastasio. This recording has been structured to contain all of Metastasio’s original arias; it is a pasticcio in the sense that the music is by 16 different composers amongst the many that set the libretto between 1733 and the end of the century. Venice Baroque Orchestra and its music director Andrea Marcon have a distinguished record of modern-day premieres, including works by Cavalli, Marcello, Handel and Vivaldi. In 2001 they added Cimarosa’s 'L’Olimpiade', and in 2006, Galuppi’s setting of the same Metastasio libretto. Only during research for the Galuppi staging did they become aware that dozens of composers had set the same story, leading to a discussion with Mr. Marcon about creating a 'pasticcio' performance and recording project. The search for manuscripts led to libraries and music conservatories in Milan, Florence, Naples, Venice, Paris, Lisbon, Berlin, New York and Washington DC. Over time, several were found online. The objective, of Venice Baroque, is to help introduce important works by lesser-known composers, encouraging others to continue exploring the enormous body of 18th-century Italian opera. 16 arias in a world premiere recording. The release is to coincide with the London Olympics - 27 July to 12 August 2012 Venice Baroque Orchestra, founded by Andrea Marcon, is one of today's leading baroque orchestras. They have a large discography at Archiv and Deutsche Gramophon and have recorded with artists such Giuliano Carmignola, Patricia Petibon, Magdalena Kozena, Simone Kermes e.a.
