"Soriana is ‘our Syria’. Our country that we left behind, forced out either by a search or by circumstances. We head out thinking that we carry no baggage, completely unaware of the biggest gift our country has bestowed upon us. That gift is the gift of musical knowledge. It remains with me throughout many journeys, it soothes wounds and inspires creation, provides warmth and a platform of stability, images, aromas, tastes that water the mouth and inspire new creations still. This music is my gift to our Syria – Soriana." Basel Rajoub

Live at Maxwell's DE3 Duane EUBANKS / Eric McPHERSON / Dezron DOUGLAS For the past few years, trumpeter/composer Duane Eubanks has been locked into his identity as a quintet leader. For a change of pace, Eubanks made the most of an opportunity to record two relaxed sessions Steve Maxwell’s Drum Shop in Midtown New York City with a trio made up of mainstays from his Quintet, namely bassist Dezron Douglas and drummer Eric McPherson. Live At Maxwell’s is one of those special recordings where the musicians get to let it hang out. This loosening of artistic inhibitions is what makes this recording special. The compositions on the recording are great vehicles for the ensemble to stretch out on. Most of the pieces stem from the pen of Eubanks. Douglas also provides an original and the trio improvises a couple pieces extemporaneously. Stepping away from the constraints of the typical studio album, DE3 has delivered a fantastic recording of nuance, interplay and personality on Live At Maxwell’s.

The Digging DAN BLAKE From the beginning of his musical studies, Blake has made it his aim to work as a leader in the jazz tradition, but on his own terms. His interest in music from all over the world and his work with a diverse group of leaders, including Esperanza Spalding, Julian Lage and Anthony Braxton, has produced a musician and listener of depth. Blake has brought that all-encompassing spirit to his own work, which ranges widely from forays into early jazz and post bop to experiments with modern classical and more avant-garde work, trying to blur the boundaries of each. The trio that Blake enlisted for the new album includes his long time friend and collaborator Dmitry Ishenko on bass and drummer Eric Harland, who Blake met during his tenure with Julian Lage. Ishenko was a natural choice as Blake has played with him for nearly 15 years and they were both students of great pedagogue and soprano saxophone innovator Steve Lacy. Harland’s excellence behind the kit is no secret and he really brings his all to this project.

Diversions ALESSANDRO LANZONI The award for “Top Jazz 2013” as best new talent of the year, decided by the most qualified Italian journalists on behalf of the Musica Jazz magazine, launched Alessandro Lanzoni as one of the great personalities of Italian jazz .Through his two latest, most successful records, “Dark Flavour” and “Seldom”, released on CAM JAZZ in 2013 and 2014, respectively, Alessandro Lanzoni has conclusively developed his own features as an artist who puts his talent to good use in an unceasing musical exploration. A performer so willing to explore could not but find piano solo as a favourable environment, in which he is able to release his creative energy most genuinely and subjectively: this is how Lanzoni’s latest album was born. Its title, “Diversions”, conveys Alessandro’s ability to create ever-changing sonic landscapes through free improvisation, places where the listener is led confidently by an expert who knows how to manoeuver the roughest paths, mastering the most varied musical languages.

Upright Tales ROSA BRUNELLO Y LOS FERMENTOS Two years after her debut recording, Camarones a La Plancha, double bass player Rosa Brunello presents her latest effort as a leader, Upright Tales. This album features 11 original tracks (5 of which by Brunello, 4 by Boato and 2 by Vignato), 11 tales in a passionate, but also meditative mood. Brunello confidently leads an unusual “rhythm section plus brass” quartet made up of some of the most intriguing, dynamic figures on the current Italian jazz scene. Acting as a centre of gravity for a spiritual, varying sonic universe, Brunello’s warm-toned double bass marks out the spaces around which David Boato’s trumpet and Filippo Vignato’s trombone fluctuate and dance in a feverish interaction with Luca Colussi’s drums. Particles of matter that swell and heat up, splitting into other particles in a process of fermentation. A chemical metaphor for an alchemic, cohesive, ever-evolving music.
