Jonathan HARVEY: Deo The Choir of St John's College, Cambridge Andrew Nethsingha

Label: Signum Classics File Under: Classical/Choral Catalogue No: SIGCD456 Barcode: 635212045626 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack The Choir of St John's College, Cambridge Edward Picton-Turbervill (organ) Andrew Nethsingha [conductor]

The Choir of St John’s College Cambridge, one of the finest collegiate choirs in the world, launches a new series of recordings on Signum by exploring the close connections between the college and celebrated British composer Jonathan Harvey (1939-2012), in a disc of works for choir and organ. Harvey’s music has influenced a generation of composers, described by The Guardian’s Tom Service as being “at once vividly contemporary and timeless”. The Choir’s director Andrew Nethsingha reflects on his own experiences and work with the Jonathan Harvey in the CD’s programme note, in particular as the choir collaborated on what would be Jonathan Harvey’s final work for the choir, 'The Annunciation' (2011). St John’s Cambridge imprint will feature all forthcoming recordings by the Choir of St John’s College Cambridge, as well as young talent from the College and prominent alumni. The second release, due out in autumn 2016, will feature music for Advent and Christmas, including both traditional and contemporary works, including Michael Finnissy’s 'John the Baptist', composed for the College Choir and winner of a 2015 British Composer Award. Future St John’s Cambridge releases will include a collection of violin works performed by Julia Hwang – a former category finalist in BBC Young Musician of the Year – currently an undergraduate at the college, and Kodaly and Poulenc Masses. 1I Love the Lord 2Magnificat 3Nunc Dimittis 4Toccata for Organ and Tape 5Come Holy Ghost 6Praise ye the Lord 7Missa Brevis: Kyrie 8Missa Brevis: Gloria 9Missa Brevis: Sanctus & Benedictus 10Missa Brevis: Agnus Dei 11The Royal Banners Forward Go 12Laus Deo 13The Annunciation

Ramon Llull [1232-1316] Era of Conquest, Dialogue, and Exhortation

Hespèrion XXI La Capella Reial de Catalunya Jordi Savall Ramon Llull (1232-1316) was one of the most prominent writers and poets of medieval Catalonia. Llull lived at a time of great cultural splendour, marked by the coexistence, not always peacefully, of the three religious cultures of his time: Christian, Jewish, Muslim. While there is no direct evidence whether or not Ramon Llull was himself a musician, it’s clear that he deeply loved the art of singing; indeed, many of his poems were intended to be sung. Jordi Savall leads La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Hespèrion XXI, and special guest artists in a programme entitled 'Ramon Llull: Era of Conquest, Dialogue, and Exhortation'.

ALSO AVAILABLE: ONYX4077 Winterreise “this new version by Florian Boesch and Malcolm Martineau is inspired and quite unforgettable. It has total spontaneity, a superbly balanced, totally natural recording, with the pianist making a perfect partnership with the singer...What is remarkable in a performance of this calibre is that the sadness which permeates all these songs....is always affecting. I cannot recommend this CD too highly.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012 ONYX4112 Die Schöne Müllerin “an exceptionally vivid and dramatic account of the cycle, full of fierce anger and tenderness...there is no danger of [gruffness] here, thanks to the natural brightness of Boesch’s voice and the sensitivity and subtlety of Malcolm Martineau’s outstanding piano playing.” Sunday Times, 24th November 2013 ONYX4131 Schwanengesang “[Boesch] has a very wide dynamic range at his disposal which he controls expertly while his palette of vocal colouring is wide ranging and applied with perception. Clearly he has established a formidable partnership with Malcolm Martineau...Here is an extremely accomplished and perceptive Schubertian.” MusicWeb International, 12th January 2015

Haydn and Ligeti Concertos and Capriccios HAYDN: Piano Concertos in G & D, Capriccio in G ‘Acht Sauschneider müssen sein’, Capriccio (Fantasia) in C LIGETI: Piano Concerto, Capriccios Nos.1 & 2 Shai Wosner has established himself as one of today’s leading Schubert interpreters. He is also equally at home in Classical, Romantic and Contemporary repertoire, often in unusual combinations which are both thought provoking: Brahms and Schoenberg for example, or delightfully quirky, as on his new recording for ONYX.

Label: Onyx Classics File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: ONYX4174 Barcode: 880040417422 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Shai Wosner [piano] Nicholas Collon [conductor] Danish National Symphony Orchestra

Shai Wosner writes, "There aren't too many composers in music history who are likely to use subtitles such as ‘It takes eight of you to castrate a boar’ (‘Acht Sauschneider müssen sein’). Like a naughty smile under the more official Capriccio in G Major by Joseph Haydn from 1765, its origin remains mysterious - most likely a forgotten Austrian folk song - but it would have no doubt been relished wholeheartedly by the 20th-century composer of the 'Nonsense Madrigals'. Apart from connections with Central-European folk music (Haydn's "Ungarese" style, Ligeti's early Capriccios, for example) or the fact that both were towering figures already in their lifetime - like 'Papa' Haydn, Ligeti carries unparalleled direct or indirect influence on almost every young composer today - a particular richness of humour that transcends centuries links their music music - like two distant relatives sharing an old family joke." ALSO AVAILABLE: ONYX4055 Brahms & Schoenberg "intense focus...muscular momentum to crystalline stasis in almost a heartbeat. A thoughtfully wrought, gently provocative recital." BBC Radio3 CD Review ONYX4073 Schubert Sonatas D840 & 850 "Wosner heads straight to the front rank of Schubertians" BBC Music Magazine "(Wosner's) fascinating way of emotionally personalising the work...A truly impressive recital" BBC Radio 3 CD Review ONYX4136 Schubert Sonata D959, Moments musicaux, Mazzoli: Isabelle Eberhardt Dreams of Pianos "This, on a boutique label, is Schubert playing at the Schnabel level" Norman Lebrecht Advertised in BBC Music Magazine

HAYDN: Cello Concertos in C & D, Adagio from Symphony No.13, Adagio in F from Violin Concerto in C arr. Gomziakov

Pavel Gomziakov Orquestra Gulbenkian

Label: Onyx Classics File Under: Classical/Orchestral Catalogue No: ONYX4151 Barcode: 880040415121 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Pavel Gomziakov ['Chevillard King of Portugal’ Stradivarius cello] Orquestra Gulbenkian Erik Heide [concertmaster]

This CD marks the debut recording of one of the most precious Stradivarius cellos, the remarkable instrument from his ‘Golden period’ made in 1725. Known as the ‘Chevillard King of Portugal’ it was owned by King Dom Luis I in the 19th century, and after the King’s death was placed in the Museum of Music in Lisbon. In 2014, Pavel Gomziakov played the recently restored cello, and knew at once that this was the perfect choice for his planned Haydn recording. The instrument hadn’t left the museum, and as a national treasure was forbidden from being removed. However with the assistance of the head of the museum and the director of the Gulbenkian music department, the cello was allowed to journey under armed police escort to the recording venue! Haydn’s two cello concertos have become firm favourites in the concert repertoire, but it was only in 1961 that the score of the C major work resurfaced in Prague. The slow movement of the remarkable 13th Symphony has an extensive solo cello part, written for Josef Weigl. Noticed by Maria Joao Pires, cellist Pavel Gomziakov made a Chopin recording with her for Deutsche Grammophon (released in 2009, it received a Grammy Award nomination). For Onyx he has recorded Saint-Saëns’ Cello concerto No. and La Muse et le Poète with the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra and Augustin Dumay [ONYX4091], released in 2012. He is also a sought-after partner for chamber music. He regularly collaborates with artists such as Augustin Dumay, Andreï Korobeinikov, Louis Lortie, Vanessa Wagner, Anastasya Terenkova.

CHOPIN: Polonia Pascal Amoyel The pianist Pascal Amoyel – a highly individual artist, a gifted improviser - here presents his third recording for La Dolce Volta after his much acclaimed Alkan and Liszt discs. He proposes an interpretation of the great Polonaises (opp.26, 40, 44 and 53), as metaphors of the Polish diaspora: of exile, sorrow and despair. The Polonaise-Fantaisie, a synthesis of all the others, closes this sumptuous recording, offering us a new world of sound, right up to the exultant quintessence of the final bars. SCHUMANN: Piano Trios 1 & 2 Trio Karénine Is choosing Schumann for a first recording bold to the point of folly? Not if the choice corresponds to a genuine passion. Schumann was passion personified but also rapture and impetuosity. Nothing touched him more than the enthusiasm of young musicians and the ardent commitment of the young Trio Karénine, in their debut cd for Mirare, may well have won his approval. Winner of the ARD international Competition in 2013 – at which the Trio Karénine was awarded top prize and several special prizes - the trio has chosen to bear the name of Tolstoy’s heroine for the vital impulse that she represents. The ensemble studied with charismatic chamber music artists, such as the Ysaÿe Quartet, Menahem Pressler, Jean-Claude Pennetier and the Trio Wanderer.

It has been two centuries since Paganini, consummate violinist, wrote this piece of bravura for his own performances. It was eventually published in 1817 and was to inspire numerous variations (29 to date), ranging from low key (for solo guitar) to grandiose (for a full Straussian orchestra), some (by Schumann, Milhaud, Casella, Dallapiccola and others) now curiously forgotten. The theme has never ceased to serve as a showcase of technical prowess, the latest being Andrew Lloyd Webber’s acclaimed variations for cello and rock band (1977). Featured here are choice masterpieces - for solo piano (Liszt, 1851 and Brahms, 1863), for violin and piano (Szymanowski,1918), for piano and orchestra (Lutoslawski, 1978 and Rachmaninov,1934) and for symphony orchestra (Blacher,1947).
