Named after a book on Haitian music (originally from a Haitian proverb), the album focuses on Creole, Cajun and Haitian music, and the centuries of culture and tradition therein. Invisible Man JUKKA PERKO & AVARA Jukka Perko is one of the leading voices on the Finnish jazz scene, combining the strength and muscularity of bebop with Nordic melancholy. There are also reflected shadows of European classical music, of the American jazz tradition and of Finnish folk music. Perko has worked alongside such stars as McCoy Tyner, Red Rodney and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and more recently was a member of Wolfgang Haffner's “Kind of Cool” ensemble. He was also particularly inspiring on his ACT label debut, “It Takes Two to Tango,” with another luminary of Finnish jazz, Iiro Rantala.

The first thing one notices about Jukka Perko's instrumental trio Avara is its unusual set-up: saxophone, acoustic guitar and electric guitar. While that might seem an outlandish combination, the harmonic inventiveness and the lyricism on the album “Invisible Man” are often so completely jaw-dropping, one has to ask why it hasn’t been tried more often. The sound of the group is surprisingly dense for just three players, with each of the constituent voices supporting and complementing the others. Elegiac soundscapes reach out into the distance, evocatively shot through with sudden momentary flashes. The prevailing mood might be Finnish-melancholic; but there is always a glimmer of hope. Logos GERARDO NUNEZ & ULF WAKENIUS Unfamiliar combinations in music can lead to surprising, captivating results. At the “Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic” concert in October 2014, series curator Siggi Loch presented Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius in a new and unexpected role: as second guitarist alongside the undisputed master of flamenco nuevo, Gerardo Núñez. Sparks definitely flew, Núñez had an appetite for more of the same, and he invited his Swedish colleague straight back to Madrid for the re-match. Gerardo Núñez, originally from Jerez de la Frontera, has been called the crown prince of the flamenco guitar. Núñez is the natural and obvious successor to Paco de Lucía who passed away in 2014. He has not just renewed the centuries-old Spanish art form of flamenco, he has opened its doors, and let the winds of jazz, pop music and classical music blow in. For Núñez, co-operations which can lead to new inspiration have become something of a trademark. He has worked with operatic tenor Placido Domingo, with pop music idol Julio Iglesias and with John Patitucci, the star bassist from the world of jazz. Now, in Ulf Wakenius, he has found his ideal partner, because the Swedish guitarist is a musician unusually receptive to new contacts and new ideas. Wakenius’ playing has always not just been inspired by the American jazz tradition but also by world music. En Vie CAMILLE BERTAULT During the early summer of 2015, French vocalist Camille Bertault began utilizing her special talents of solo transcription and vocal dexterity to record herself singing remarkably to famous solos by jazz legends. She made videos of the performances and posted them to Facebook without much thought. The result was an immediate landslide of attention, but more than just acknowledgment of a quirky video, true fans began to call. That was how Bertault came to the attention of Sunnyside Records. After being introduced by producer Matt Pierson, it turned out the vocalist had a recording already in the works; it was just a matter of tweaks and the recording, En Vie, was ready for the public. For En Vie, Bertault brought six original songs and four well-known standards. All of the lyrics that were recorded were written by the vocalist. It is her talent, wittiness and magnetizing personality that have brought Camille Bertault to the attention of so many so quickly. Her new recording En Vie will not disappoint a public that is excited to hear a new talent who is fast on the rise.

Surrounded by the Night DAVE KING TRUCKING COMPANY Prolific drummer/composer Dave King is well known for his propulsive work in a number of different bands, most notably The Bad Plus. It is King’s attraction to a strong group concept that led to his creation of his Trucking Company band and his increasing focus thereon. On its third recording, Surrounded By The Night, the Trucking Company has solidified its identity with new material and a slightly changed lineup. The addition of the Minneapolis born, Brooklyn based bassist Chris Morrissey strengthens the Minnesota-New York connection that has been part of the identity of the ensemble, featuring the saxophone and clarinet of Brooklynite Chris Speed alongside Minnesotans saxophonist Brandon Wozniak and guitarist Erik Fratzke, since its inception.

The Trucking Company was born out of the necessity to play out and out songs, music stemming from Dave and Co.’s love of jazz and the avant-garde but also rock, country and blues music. Their unique sound comes from the commingling of these influences along with the distinct instrumentation of two tenor saxes, guitar, bass and drums. En Bas de Chez Moi IRENE JACOB Considered one of the pre-eminent French actresses of her generation, Irène Jacob gained international recognition and acclaim through her work with Polish film director Krzysztof Kieslowski, who cast her in the lead role of The Double Life of Veronique and Three Colors: Red. Irène Jacob came to represent an image of European sophistication, and has a parallel life as a talented singer and composer. Along with her brother and guitarist Francis Jacob, she has been creating and performing poetic, tender and often funny songs. This new album, En bas de chez moi, is surprising and varied, full of unusual colors and atmospheres. Renowned film director Jonathan Nossiter (Mondovino) directed striking video clips, shot in Paris-Montmartre, on “Picador”, “Delphine à la plage” and “Cache cache”.
