One TIM GARLAND One is the new, highly energetic and unifying studio album from Tim Garland. Working with his regular collaborators Jason Rebello, Asaf Sirkis and Ant Law, the sax maestro has dug back into his past and re-examined his early interest in jazz-rock styles. With One Tim explores many of the influences that have guided him from the beginning, such as jazz-rock (his Canterbury roots); saxophone players from both sides of the Atlantic; the Celtic guitar music from long running project Lammas; the Latin and Spanish inflections that are so deeply a part of Chick Corea’s music; and a variety of rhythmic patterns learned from drum maestros Bill Bruford and Asaf Sirkis. TIM GARLAND IS FRONT COVER ARTIST IN JAZZWISE (MAY ISSUE) "The finest album by a British jazz musician for quite some while." (FIVE STARS) JAZZWISE "His level of genius is rare." CHICK COREA

Let Loose PETER BERNSTEIN Well-established as one of the most in-demand musicians on the New York jazz scene - he has played with Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman, Lou Donaldson, Diana Krall, etc. - guitarist Peter Bernstein presents his debut release for Smoke Sessions Records, leading a new quartet in a program that concentrates on his original compositions. The album features a quartet of artists who are equally well versed in tradition and innovation. Bassist Doug Weiss and drummer Bill Stewart are longtime collaborators stretching back nearly three decades. Gerald Clayton is the newcomer but brings along a reputation as one of the most respected pianists of his generation. The spirit of the session is pithily captured in the title of the album: Let Loose, an unbridling of passion, an opening of the floodgates of expression that definitely characterizes the playing of all four members of the quartet.

Nox Tape nOx.3 Firmly embedded in the new millenium, nOx.3's music is intriguing and captivating. The young group has not simply reinvented the trio format, but also created their own aesthetic which takes as its guidelines a desire for freedom and a finely-worked sound worthy of the wizards of electro music. As for the spectrum it covers, their music encompasses minimalist tones, hypnotic phases and melodic and rhythmic surprises. It is the jazz of 2016.

Plays the Blues Expanded Edition

JOHN COLTRANE The complete original album Coltrane Plays the Blues (Atlantic SD1553) [CD1, tracks 1-6], a thematic LP consisting of six tunes based on the blues. Pianist McCoy Tyner sits out on “Blues to Bechet” and “Blues to You”, reducing the band to a trio on these tunes. On “Blues to Bechet” and “Mr. Syms”, Trane plays soprano sax. This expanded edition explores even deeper into Coltrane’s approach to playing the blues by including 13 additional blues tracks by the saxophonist. Recorded between 1957 and 1960, these outstanding tunes feature a myriad of jazz stars. The formations range from trios to multi-horn blowing performances, and among the latter is the remarkable “Groove Blues”, which finds Trane playing on alto sax.

Drinking Again LP + 2 Bonus Tracks

DINAH WASHINGTON LIMITED EDITION CLASSIC LPs 180 gram VINYL – AUDIOPHILE PRESSING INCLUDES FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD Dinah Washington (1924-1963) recorded many albums for Roulette during the last two years of her life. Drinking Again was one of the few she made with conductor and arranger Don Costa (fresh from his success as arranger of Sinatra & Strings, one of Frank's biggest commercial successes). Curiously the only title not arranged by Costa from the LP was the title tune, “Drinking Again”, which belonged to a previous date with Fred Norman from two months prior, as do the two bonus tracks included on this vinyl reissue.

Label: Jazz Wax File Under: Jazz Catalogue No: JWR4573 Barcode: 8436559460552 Price: FULL PRICE Format: 1 LP JOHN COLTRANE - tenor saxophone Red Garland - piano Paul Chambers - bass and more

The recordings on Bahia were made during a transitional period in John Coltrane’s musical career. He had first joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 and would form his own celebrated quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in 1960. In the intervening years, he overcame his narcotics addiction and began to expand on his own musical ideas while experimenting with both the Thelonious Monk Quartet and the Miles Davis Sextet (featuring Bill Evans and Cannonball Adderley). Although Trane belonged to both the Davis and Monk groups, he also recorded studio sessions with other musicians and presented his own albums during this period. Among them were many quartet sides, all of them featuring Red Garland on piano and Paul Chambers on bass (both of whom he had known from the Miles Davis Quintet). This album, recorded in July and December 1958 for Prestige, also includes Jimmy Cobb, Art Taylor, Wilbur Harden and Freddie Hubbard. Track listing: SIDE A 1. BAHIA 6:19 2. GOLDSBORO EXPRESS 4:41 3. MY IDEAL 7:30 SIDE B 1. I’M A DREAMER (AREN’T WE ALL?) 7:10 2. SOMETHING I DREAMED LAST NIGHT 10:48 3. DO I LOVE YOU BECAUSE YOU’RE BEAUTIFUL? 5:11* *BONUS TRACK: From the same sessions, but not included on the original LP.
