And then there will be the recognition of his distinctive personality, which on this showing is fresh, inquisitive, highly intelligent, and already astonishingly mature and equal to the challenge of being a guide on our journey through these great works. He makes us follow; makes us listen; he knows how and when to produce magic and also knows when it is enough just to open doors in order to reveal wondrous things. He can be straightforward and knows how to sing a lyric without portentousness.” Stephen Plaistow, CD Review, BBC Radio 3, 17 May 2003

Can one really grasp the whole of Mahler’s symphonic output without knowing his songs? Not only do they extensively irrigate the first four symphonies, often known as ‘Wunderhorn symphonies’; they also encapsulate the fundamental principles of his reading of the world. Bernarda Fink explores the Mahler cycles from three different angles: the traditional format with piano naturally has its counterpart in the orchestral song, culminating in the 'Kindertoten' and the 'Rückert' lieder.

Alain Planès "At last, something genuinely new." It was in these terms that Ferruccio Busoni greeted the publication in 1908 of the 14 Bagatelles, in which Béla Bartók conveyed the violent aesthetic impact of his discovery of authentic Hungarian peasant music. Over the next 20 years, up to the magisterial Sonata of 1926, he indefatigably refined an innovative pianistic language: pungent, dissonant, percussive, with multiple new playing techniques, that was to influence the entire 20th century. A master of every style, from Haydn to Boulez by way of Chopin and Chabrier, Alain Planès is revealed here as a Bartókian of the front rank.

During his last years in Vienna Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed only three liturgical works: the short 'Ave Verum Corpus' and two unfinished masterworks: the 'Mass in C minor' and the 'Requiem' in D minor. Most of his sacred oeuvre was written at an early age in the conservative city of Salzburg. The 'Requiem' from 1791 is stylistically far removed from that early church music and suits the concert hall better than the church. Chief conductor Mariss Jansons leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Dutch Radio Choir and a stellar vocal quartet, featuring Genia Kühmeier, Bernarda Fink, Mark Padmore and Gerald Finley in an intense reading of Mozart's last masterpiece. Klaas de Vries's 'Providence' – inspired by Resnais's 1977 movie – is about recollection, prediction, expectation and fulfillment. It is conducted by David Robertson. Susanna Mälkki conducts two world premieres, especially written for the round concert hall of the Westergasfabriek, a former gas factory: 'Circle Map' by Kaija Saariaho and 'Antarctique' by RCO house composer Richard Rijnvos.

Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra present Brahms’ greatest choral work, the 'German' Requiem, featuring soprano Sally Matthews and baritone Christopher Maltman. Gergiev’s first Brahms release on LSO Live, Symphonies Nos 1 & 2, Tragic Overture & Haydn Variations was awarded 5/5 by BBC Music Magazine. Intended to be for ‘all humanity’, Brahms’ 'German' Requiem is a powerful work – its central themes of melancholy and comfort are universally applicable. Non-liturgical, yet sacred and devotional in spirit, it showcases the great romantic melodies for which Brahms was renowned, and has become a popular work with choirs all over the world – admired for its mystical, consolatory and contemplative tone. In May Valery Gergiev will lead the LSO in the 3rd annual BMW Open-Air concert in Trafalgar Square, in front of an audience of 10,000, performing Prokofiev’s 'Romeo & Juliet'. Sally Matthews will appear in Poulenc’s 'Dialogues des Carmélites' in the role of Blanche at the Royal Opera House in June, while Christopher Maltman will sing the role of Lescaut in Puccini’s 'Manon Lescaut'. Concert Reviews: "The London Symphony Chorus was wonderfully incisive and articulate in the large-scale movements, especially the second, 'All Flesh Is Grass', and warmly expressive in the more intimate ones such as the final Blessed Are the Dead." The Guardian **** "An undoubted plus was the solo singing – Christopher Maltman giving of his considerable best in the initial recitatives of the third and sixth movements, his sheer ardency finding meaningful contrast with the poise and pathos Matthews brought to the fifth movement in what is one of Brahms’s most affecting inspirations." Nikolai Lugansky offers a new refined and brilliant version of Chopin’s piano concertos, with the orchestra that probably has the best connection to the soul and the spirit of French-Polish composer, Sinfonia Varsovia, under Russian conductor Alexander Vedernikov. As ever, Nikolai Lugansky displays a perfect balance between virtuosity and poetry through a perfect technique and an amazing range of colours. Together with the orchestra, sometimes almost chamber in character, they achieve to enhance both immediacy and sophistication of those works. Capable of great refinement and sensitivity in Mozart and Chopin, and breathtaking virtuosity in Rachmaninov and Prokofiev, Nikolai Lugansky is a pianist of extraordinary depth and versatility. His solo recording, featuring Rachmaninov’s two Piano Sonatas, released in Autumn 2012 won a number of awards including an Echo Klassik, Diapason d’Or, ‘Gramophone Choice’, ‘Choc’ de Classica, and Scherzo ‘Excepcionales’, and was followed by a recording with Kent Nagano and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin of the Grieg Piano Concerto and Prokofiev’s Third. For his début in the recording studio he has chosen two seemingly opposed concertos: Mendelssohn's famous violin concerto and the magic concerto composed by Hoopes' compatriot, John Adams. Betrayal, revenge, inheritance conflicts and forbidden love at the Persian court: in 1728 this explosive mixture inspired Handel to compose the successful opera 'Siroe, Re di Persia', one of his last compositions for the Royal Academy of Music at the King’s Theatre. Handel based his work on the libretto by the famous poet Pietro Metastasio. In its first season 'Siroe' was performed on 18 successive evenings, but was never subsequently revived in Handel’s lifetime. It received its first modern performance in GÜttingen with a top-rank cast performing under the musical direction of Laurence Cummings. Booklet notes by David Vickers. 'Siroe' is the start of a new co-operation with the International Handel Festival GÜttingen and Accent Records. It is planned to release two operas and one oratorio per year. Next release, in September 2014, will be Handel's 'Faramondo' again with Laurence Cummings, recorded live this May. The GÜttingen Handel Festival 2014 has the title 'Handel Royal' & has a focus on the Anglo-German collaboration which started in 1714, the year in which Georg, Prince-Elector of Hanover, acceded to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland as George I. The Lufthansa Festival 2014 is also celebrating this anniversary. "GÜttingen Festival has always been lucky in having inspirational and influential figures at the helm, with Nic McGegan and Eliot Gardiner among their previous artistic directors. It seems they’ve been equally lucky securing Laurence Cummings in the role now; not only is he clearly warmly accepted by festival regulars and locals, he has the connections to put together a fantastic programme of internationally renowned performers and a relentless energy that supports this most special and unique of Handel Festivals – get there next year if you can, I can promise you won’t regret it!" A magical creation mixing together puppets, Cervantes and Spanish Renaissance music. Puppets and puppeteers, narrator, singers, musicians: such is the remarkable team that Les Sacqueboutiers brought together for an original musical show. They bring to the stage the extravagant madness of Don Quichotte through his delusional life, tilting at windmills as well as the encounter with Dulcinea del Toboso, or the episode of 'El retablo de Maese Pedro'. Les Sacqueboutiers are an ensemble based in Toulouse, playing on early brass instruments. They have been in existence for more than 30 years, during which time they have built up a reputation as one of the finest early music ensembles, regarded as a reference in the interpretation of 17th-century instrumental music, particularly that of Italy and Germany. When they decided to form Les Sacqueboutiers in 1974, Jean-Pierre Canihac and Jean-Pierre Mathieu were among the first to embark on the adventurous rediscovery of early instruments. The quality of their work soon attracted attention, and they took part in the groundbreaking recording of Monteverdi's 'Vespro della Beata Vergine', conducted by Michel Corboz. Since then, they have performed music ranging from the Renaissance to Mozart, with many prestigious ensembles including Les Arts Florissantsand the Ens Clément Janequin. The group comprises a nucleus of cornetts and sackbuts, which are joined, as the needs arise, by other instruments (violins, viols, bassoons, shawms) and vocalists.

This fascinating programme revisits Monteverdi’s masterpiece 'Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda' in a new musical [and in Les Sacqueboutiers' concert programmes, choreographic] version. This unusual work tells the story of the nocturnal combat between the Christian knight Tancredi and the Muslim Clorinda: a strange and breathtaking confrontation where extreme passions are expressed. Although the initial score was intended to be played by a set of four violas da braccio, cornets and sackbuts used here are perfectly adapted to express the very essence of 'Il Combattimento', due to the fact that these instruments are the most able to imitate the human voice.

Italian monody from the early 17th century has a variety of forms from the popular accents and naive ditty 'Augellin' to the subtlety of the madrigal 'Aura Soave'. The famous 'Amarilli' is unrecognisable here, disguised by a wreath of ornaments and supported by a single bass viol. Other pieces feature a consort of viols that provides particularly intensive support for example in 'Torna' by Caccini or Marazzoli’s beautiful allegory 'Sopra la Rosa'.

VERDI: Aida La Fura de Baus Since 1913 operatic performances have been given in the Arena of Verona in Summer, with more than 17,000 spectators enjoying the show every evening. 'Aida' is the most popular opera of Verona Festival, the only one performed every year. 'Aida', the masterpiece which gave life to the Opera Festival in the Arena 100 years ago, was presented in two different versions: a revival of the 1913, that was launched with Zenatello singing; and a new one from Catalan theatre group La Fura des Baus. La Fura opened the Centenary Festival: this version of 'Aida' was completely wacky: fire, inflatable sculptures, an aluminium pyramid assembled by crane, acrobats, mechanical camels, men in orange boiler suits with scarab beetle heads riding bumper cars, flooding the stage to make a lake inhabited by dancers dressed as crocodiles, solar panels... Under the night sky, it was a visual feast. This 'Aida' with its spectacular scenic techniques and technology, was directed by Carlus Padrissa and Àlex Ollé; choreography by Valentina Carrasco; set design Roland Olbeter; costume designer, Chu Uroz. “Lorin Maazel’s Mahler cycle with the Philharmonia Orchestra is set to be the standout concert-going event of the year and goes from strength to strength...On this occasion – and ‘occasion’ it certainly was – the conjunction of performers and music was near ideal, a perfect balance of ‘head and heart’. In the past Maazel has sometimes seemed slightly cerebral, the supreme technician but often standing away from the music. However, he seems to have a new-found warmth, passion and understanding. All his conducting wizardry remains but this was far more than a clinical traversal for Maazel captured that sense of awe at Mahler’s teeming invention, the work’s inner-life, which one felt when first hearing this extraordinary work... all sections of the Philharmonia were covered in glory – particular credit to the excellent bass trombone, Christian Jones, and the sensitive tuba, Peter Smith... this was as shattering – and moving – a performance of this symphony as it has been my privilege to hear." Antonín Dvorák’s Cello Concerto is one of the absolute masterpieces of the genre, and every world-class cellist naturally takes it into his repertoire. This is also the case for Daniel Müller-Schott, who will be performing it in the great concert halls of Europe in 2014 and in the Lincoln Center in New York: thus in the very same city where Dvorák worked as conservatory director and where he wrote the concerto. Dvorák began his work in passionate, stormy mood, but completed it in lyrical, elegiac vein under the shadow of the illness and death of his sister-in-law Josefina, who had been his own first love. Müller-Schott’s new recording also includes several chamber music works and arrangements that offer insight as to how Dvorák gradually accustomed himself to the cello, up to the point when he composed his concerto in 1894-5. There is the catchy 'Rondo' that Dvorák wrote in 1892 for a chamber music tour, and 'Silent Woods', an arrangement made for the same tour, heard here in Dvorák’s own orchestral versions. Together with the pianist Robert Kulek, Müller-Schott has also recorded arrangements of the four Romantic Pieces op. 75 and of 'Songs my mother taught me' from the Gypsy Songs cycle. The latter is perfectly suited to the cello’s cantabile character and Daniel Müller-Schott’s interpretation.

He made his Vienna Musikverein debut in 2003; his BBC Proms debut in 2006. He has also performed at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 2012 he was awarded the Hideo Saito Memorial Fund Award, one of Japan’s most prestigious music awards Danjulo and fellow ONYX artist Shai Wosner have chosen a programme of works with strong roots in folk music which speak their characteristic national language very clearly. Together with Bartók, Kodály was a true pioneer in exploring and collecting melodies from the Hungarian folk tradition. Leoš Janácek’s 'Pohádka', on the other hand, turns beyond the folk tradition to another aspect that all cultures have in common: the fairy tale. Like his Hungarian counterparts, he too collected many of his country’s folk songs, observing and studying his compatriots’ language with a view to how it functioned in a melodic sense. He had a keen sensibility for the sounds of nature, and incorporated all these elements into his music. Grieg’s great Sonata combines folkloric and magical elements in equal measure and paints a sonic picture of Norwegian culture. Advertised in Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine

David McGuinness and his virtuoso band of early musickers voyage once more into musical history, and this time the object of their exploration is Tobias Hume, about whose life we know very little. (David’s engaging essay tells us as much as there is to know.) The best guess for Hume’s birthdate could be any time from 1565 to 1579, and the materials documenting his appearance on the fringes of the London musical scene from around 1605 are sparse. This recording draws on the two books of music Hume published in his lifetime, and ranges from capricious fragments of tunes that celebrate the simple joy of playing the viol, to potent moments of substantial emotional depth. ‘My Life hath beene a Souldier,’ Hume declared in 1605, ‘and my idlenes addicted to Musicke.’ Concerto Caledonia have given us the opportunity to indulge in Hume’s addiction. Concerto Caledonia is Scotland’s foremost early music group, bringing to life the classical and traditional music of the nation’s history. This is their fifth recording on Delphian. As well as appearing regularly on BBC Radio 3, the group has also been broadcast on Radios 1, 2, and 4 and appears regularly in live collaborations at the Edinburgh International Festival.

More than three decades have elapsed since Frans Brüggen set down his earlier visions of Mozart's symphonies with his Orchestra of the 18th Century. Now, he has chosen to release his new views of these contrasting yet complementary works as part of his Grand Tour on Glossa. The Dutch maestro and his band have regularly engaged with the music of the Salzburg genius and the symphonies have frequently appeared in their concert schedules. If the precise, original performing locations for these symphonies remain elusive, the three works: 'Jupiter', K551, the E flat major, K543, and that “evergreen study in the key of G minor”, K550, known by people all around the world as 'Mozart 40', all clamour for constant and fresh interpretations and these are precisely what Frans Brüggen delivers. Recordings on Glossa from Brüggen in recent times – always whilst on tour – have included Mozart’s concertos for horn, clarinet and violin, as well as the Requiem. With Stefano Russomanno providing a well considered booklet essay, this new release of the three final Mozart symphonies, available on two CDs, recorded live in Rotterdam, provides eloquent testimony to Frans Brüggen’s ability to summon up the expressiveness and spontaneity demanded by Mozart’s masterpieces from 1788. Recorded live in Rotterdam (de Doelen), Netherlands, on 4 March 2010

With the welcome issue on Glossa of 'Las idas y las vueltas', evidence of the new spirit of musicmaking from Spain is evident from Fahmi Alqhai’s previous releases (A piacere and Rediscovering Spain). 'Las idas y las vueltas' is an exuberant display of music-making in its own right but also a demonstration of the interrelationship between Spanish Baroque music and flamenco. The melting pot of melodies, colours and rhythms that followed in the wake of Spain’s colonial expansion brought together European, South American and African influences. On 'Las idas y las vueltas', there is a constant to-ing and fro-ing of such influences – jácaras and guarachas, folías, Las morillas de Jaén and La Spagna, bulerías and jaleos – all brought to musical life by the cantaor Arcángel, the flamenco guitarist Miguel Ángel Cortés and the Baroque instrumentalists of Alqhai’s Accademia del Piacere, and the singer Mariví Blasco. This new release comes with two bonus tracks, both recorded live and previously unreleased: a pasacalle and a new version of ¡Ay, que me abraso! The whole album has been freshly remixed by Alqhai and his team in their studio in Seville.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was one of the first to compose pieces for piano four hands. His father, Leopold, wrote in a letter of 9 July 1765: "In London Wolfgangerl wrote his first piece for four hands. Until that time no sonata for four hands had ever been composed." The famous Salzburg family portrait painted by Johann Nepomuk della Croce in 1780-81 (Mozarteum, Salzburg) shows Wolfgang and his sister, Nannerl, playing a duet at the piano, with Leopold, violin in hand, looking on, and his wife, Anna Maria (d. 1778), included in a picture on the wall. The three works presented here were composed in Vienna in 1786 and 1787, when the young virtuoso was about to give up his career as a pianist in order to concentrate on the composition of operas, having been stimulated by his meeting with the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte. In the summer of 1786 he composed what is probably the most ambitious and most significant of his four-hand pieces, the Sonata in F major (KV 497). It was first performed in Vienna on 4 November 1786, four months before the Andante and Variations in G major (KV 501). His last sonata for piano four hands, in C major, KV 521, was written in May 1787, when Mozart had reached his full maturity as a composer. It is characterised by the light key of C major and the virtuosity of its two fast movements (especially the first), bright and brilliant in their elegance. ALSO AVAILABLE: AP056 Schubert

Félicien David (1810–1876) an orphan, trained at the choir school of St Sauveur Cathedral in Aix-en-Provence. After meeting the painter Pol Justus in 1831, he joined the Saint-Simonian movement and became its official composer. When the community led by Père Enfantin (1796–1864) was disbanded by government order the following year, David left France with a group of friends to spread the Saint-Simonian gospel in the East, a journey that took him to countries including Egypt and Algeria. His art songs for voice and piano, most of which were published between his return from Egypt (1835) and the end of the July Monarchy (1848), belong to a genre that was then undergoing substantial change. Like Berlioz dreaming of England, Félicien David speaks of North Africa and the Middle East using a French musical language of Viennese inspiration. Indeed, we find not only harmonic patterns characteristic of Schubert, but also, at the same time, the melodic sweetness that has been a typical feature of French music since the 17th-century air de cour. All of Félicien David’s art songs show an innocence that Berlioz and Saint-Saëns saw as their finest quality, as well as a simplicity that favoured their success by making them accessible to all. Regarded as one of the finest baritones of his generation, admired for his acting skills and his musicality, Athens-born Tassis Christoyannis studied piano, singing, conducting and composition at the Athens Conservatory, before going on to specialise in the Italian repertoire with the baritone Aldo Protti. He sings the principal baritone roles in Italian, French and Russian works at opera houses and festivals all over Europe, including Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Geneva, Glyndebourne, Brussels, Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Bordeaux, Frankfurt. Tassis Christoyannis is also much in demand for his skills as a song recitalist.

Oswald von Wolkenstein: politician, diplomat, castle owner, Knight of the Realm and bon vivant... these were his 'main professions' that took him to nearly all regions of the world known during his time. Today, he is primarily known for his most important 'hobby' of which he was a master as poet, musician and composer; a fine singer and player of diverse instruments; and as master of about ten languages. From no other poet-composer of the Middle Ages has such a multi-faceted repertoire been handed down. He created real popular songs and simple, monophonic narrative songs as well as complex polyphony. Almost everything that was in vogue during his time can be found in his personal manuscripts: we find such strange yet fascinating sounds as those from his pen. For this CD, 'The Cosmopolitan – Songs by Oswald von Wolkenstein', Marc Lewon has compiled a programme with his Ensemble Leones that does justice to Oswald's versatility as poet and musician. Alongside rarely heard pieces, they present a series of first recordings ranging from multilingual 'macaronic' Lieder and travel descriptions to true musical gems. James Bowman has been one of the world’s leading counter-tenors for over 40 years; his career spans Opera, Oratorio, Contemporary music and solo recitals. In May 2011 he made his farewell to the London concert platform with a sold-out recital at London’s Wigmore Hall, singing Purcell and Handel. However, he still appears occasionally at venues away from the capital... "There is absolutely no rhyme or reason behind the selection of pieces on this recording, and this is intentional. Every piece was chosen at random, simply because I happened to like them and wanted to record them. I have been lucky enough to have had a recording career that started over 45 years ago, having made my first recording for His Master’s Voice, with King’s College Choir in 1967. Since then I have made some 180 recordings, stretching from black discs through tape cassettes, to CDs. Actually, I made my original demo recording on a wax disc, and this was sent to David Willcocks in Cambridge for his approval. At the end of a recording career there are always pieces lurking at the bottom of the barrel that you wanted to record, but somehow they never seemed to fit into the scheme of things. So here are those ‘Odds & Ends’ and I have to admit they make a very disparate collection. The only pieces actually written for counter-tenor are the three songs by Malcolm Archer and the little Grace before Dinner by Christopher Moore. Other pieces have been transposed and rearranged to suit my voice. I’ve always loved Elgar, but he wrote nothing for counter-tenor, so I’ve taken the liberty of including the lovely ‘Where corals lie’ from Sea Pictures. I wonder what Dame Clara Butt would make of this." James Bowman WORLD PREMIERE RECORDING Malcom Archer: Three Songs [written for James Bowman]

With Vierne's Fifth and Sixth Organ Symphonies, written in the years 1924 and 1930 respectively, the three-part complete Audite recording of the six organ symphonies is completed. Both works were written when Vierne was permanently employed as organist of Notre-Dame in Paris. Louis Victor Jules Vierne was highly gifted and ambitious, but almost blind. He studied in Paris with Charles-Marie Widor, who founded the genre of the organ symphony. At the age of 23, in 1894, Vierne was able to deputise for his teacher in a dual capacity: at the organ console of the Parisian Church of Saint-Sulpice and in Widor‘s organ class at the Conservatory. However, Vierne‘s calling was for higher endeavours: between 1899 and 1930 he composed six organ symphonies that were to bring the genre to a hitherto unknown peak. Recorded at the Goll organ of St. Martin in Memmingen, the recording is characterised by the warm, soft and widely mensurated sound of the organ which creates unobtrusive power and fullness, making a symphonic effect in the church interior, yet always remaining clear. The polyphonic structures of the works become distinct and the transparency of sound permits fresher tempi than usual - neither of which can be a given in recordings of Vierne. Hans-Eberhard Roß is Director of Church Music in Memmingen. He has already recorded the complete organ works of César Franck for Audite. Additional information on the Goll organ and the registration is available at www.audite.de. Ross’s brilliant playing is captured in good sound.” BBC Music Magazine- Christmas Issue 2013 audite 21413 Franck Complete Organ Works "note-perfect and the sound of the Goll is thrillingly spacious." SFZ MUSIC are pleased to announce their latest release, the debut recording by the organist Huw Morgan, on the organ of St Laurence, Catford, South London. Huw has been director of music at that church for a number of years, as well as being director of music of the Hanover Choir and the Merbecke Choir of Southwark Cathedral; he is also active as a composer, journalist and tutor for the Royal School of Church Music. He is also co-founder of Automatronic, a collective that promotes and explores experimental music for organ + electronics. The organ of St Laurence is by J.W. Walker & Sons, built in 1969 to a specification designed by the late David Sanger: it is noted as one of the finest-voiced extension organs in the country. Huw plays a varied selection of music that exploits the bright, clear sounds of the organ brilliantly: from a first recording of a work by the Austrian composer Kurt Estermann, through music by Hugo Distler, to baroque works by Bach, Buxtehude and Sweelinck. Also included are two of his own compositions: 'Dialogues', and 'Adam’s Fall', a work including fixed electronics.

Stimulated by the sheer pleasure of playing Buxtehude’s extraordinary chamber music, Le Concert Brisé and William Dongois have taken the liberty of selecting some of his sonatas for violin, viol and continuo and adapting them for cornett, sackbut and concertante organ. Not only do certain passages prove to be entirely natural for wind instruments but violinists complain about the awkward nature of these sonatas, whose idiom is at least as typical of the keyboard as of the string family. These are not intended to be a ‘musicologically correct’ version of the sonatas; rather a plausible view of what could well have been the practice of the time.

From 1691 until 1705, in the years in which he wrote the four manuscript volumes of his keyboard works, Bernardo Pasquini (1637-1710) was at the height of his fame, organist of the 'Roman Senate and People', a successful composer in every musical genre: from opera to oratorio, from chamber cantata to sacred motet, from severe keyboard ricercare to new harpsichord suite in the galante style. An artist at the forefront for almost 30 years, he shared fame with other emerging stars such as Alessandro Scarlatti and Arcangelo Corelli. He had a close relationship with the latter, often performing his oratorios, jointly conducting the orchestra from the harpsichord. Conceived for the practical use of his nephew and pupil Bernardo Felice Ricordati, who later added the name Pasquini to his own, the 'Sonate per gravecembalo' (today preserved in the Berlin library, Landsberg Collection, and at the British Library in London), bear valuable testimony to the artist’s desire to offer posterity the ripe fruit of his talent. In this Pasquini anticipated Bach, who knew his keyboard works and who dedicated the last ten years of his life to the re-compilation and revision of most the works previously composed, so that this important work should not be lost because of changing tastes and fleeting fashions.

LACHENMANN: Complete String Quartets Gran Torso (1972) Reigen seliger Geister (1989) * Grido (2000-01) * composer supervised recording
Jack Quartet Helmut Lachenmann has created a unique sound world which he refers to as “instrumental musique concrete. It is a world where the musical atom is not the note but the sound, which may be drawn from the instrument in all kinds of unusual ways. Strange as the soundscape may be, Lachenmann believes that the fundamental principles of music are about finding shape and continuity, about revealing the unexpected and touching the familiar, and that the string quartet, in particular, is about conversation. Even through all the use of extended techniques, his is still a music of gestures, phrases, even melodies. The JACK Quartet, specialists in new music, are the perfect performers for such repertoire. This recording is endorsed by the composer. Liner notes by Paul Griffiths.

STOCKHAUSEN: Momente for soprano solo, four choral groups and 13 instrumentalists, Version 1965

"Though performances have remained rare events, Momente, for soprano solo, four choral groups and 13 instrumentalists, is one of Karlheinz Stockhausen's greatest achievements. It's one of the pieces, along with works such as Gesang der JĂźnglinge, Gruppen, Stimmung, Mantra and the first of his operas, Donnerstag aus Licht, in which Stockhausen marked out the trajectory of his musical development, and demonstrated the power of his compositional techniques as they evolved. In Momente, those techniques concerned his concept of "moment-form", in which a conventional musical narrative was replaced by a series of self-contained musical units of widely differing lengths and types, whose order could be left to the performers' discretion. Momente was premiered in 1962 in Cologne in an incomplete version, but became more widely known a decade later in the so-called Europa version, for which Stockhausen composed more material and added a completely new opening section; performances of that toured widely (including to the Festival Hall in London) and was released by Deutsche Grammophon, a recording that is now available as a CD from Stockhausen Verlag. This 1965 version, which first appeared on a Wergo LP, comes somewhere between the original and the final 1972 one. While it lacks the theatricality of the opening that Stockhausen later devised, it contains much of the work's most thrillingly inventive writing, as the choruses cheer, clap and play improvised percussion instruments, as well as joining the soprano (Martina Arroyo) in passages from the Songs of Songs, William Blake and an anthropological text, and supported by brass, percussion and two electric organs. Momente is part oratorio, part 1960s happening, and some of its flamboyant gestures look forward to Stockhausen's huge opera cycle, Licht, which he began a decade later. That element is less pronounced in this 1965 version than it is in the Europa, but what comes over forcefully even here, in this slightly distant Cologne radio recording, is the exuberance of the work, its abundant invention and originality, which make it totally unlike anything else being written in Europe at that time." Andrew Clements, The Guardian, 26th March The recordings were originally published on LP in 1967 (WERGO, WER60024)

John CAGE: Sonatas & Interludes for prepared piano Antonis Anissegos
Label: Wergo File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: WER6782-2 Barcode: 4010228678222 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: cristal Antonis Anissegos [piano]
Composed by John Cage between 1946 and 1948, 'Sonatas and Interludes' for prepared piano is one of the most famous works of the composer and one of the works most admired by listeners and performers alike, holding a key position in his catalogue of works. Several years earlier, Cage had already developed the technique of piano preparation to explore the possibilities of sound manipulation. Preparation tables preceding each of his pieces indicate which materials (e.g. screws, bolts, rubber, felt or plastic elements) have to be used and where they have to be placed between the piano strings. Each object, its size, strength, fixing method and position changes the pitch, volume, timbre and duration of the original piano sound. In comparison with Cage’s earlier pieces, the preparation tables for the 'Sonatas and Interludes' are comprehensive and accurate. The preparation, which takes the pianist from two and a half to three hours, encompasses more than half of all the strings of the piano. At first, Cage thus tried to achieve a specified sound image – an ideal which he later modified: “When I first placed objects between piano strings, it was with the desire to possess sounds (to be able to repeat them). But, as the music left my home and went from piano to piano and from pianist to pianist, it became clear that not only are two pianists essentially different from one another, but two pianos are not the same either. […] all led me to the enjoyment of things as they come, as they happen, rather than as they are possessed or kept or forced to be.” Antonis Anissegos works regularly, mostly throughout Europe, as a pianist and composer. He appears mainly on concerts and recordings in the field of contemporary creative music. In recent years he performs often as an electronic musician and frequently in dance projects.

SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 13 'Babi Yar' PROKOFIEV: October Cantata Op. 74 [excerpts] Moscow Philharmonic Kirill Kondrashin

A historic version of the patriotic October cantata by Prokofiev plus only the second public performance of Shostakovich's 13th Symphony on December 20, 1962, using the original text by Yevtushenko, which pays tribute to murdered Jews in the Ukrainian ravine of Babi Yar. As in the first performance this heroic ballad succeeds as a passionate, vengeful and suitably funereal tribute despite Kruschev's to change the text. The same incomparable, authentically Russian cast performs most of the 'October' Cantata which honours the 20th Anniversary of the October Revolution. In ten contrasting movements, drawn from the writings of Marx, Lenin and Stalin, it relates the story of the Bolshevik Revolution and the birth of the Soviet Union, from the battle for the Winter Palace in 1917, through the suffering of 1918 and Lenin's funeral in 1924, to the building of factories and collective farms in the early '30, and the final consolidation of Stalin's control over the country with his new constitution of 1936. Begun by Prokofiev in 1936 on a generous commission from the All-Union Radio Committee and Prokofiev's friend Boris Gusman, it was finished the following summer. Prokofiev expected it to be part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution of 1917 but due to the political climate towards artists in 1937, Prokofiev withheld the work. The Cantata had to wait until May 1966 for its première, 13 years after Prokofiev's death. By this time Stalin was also dead and disgraced.

Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli A third recital tribute to the immaculate art of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Praga Digitals do him proud in these new remasters which resurrect his classicism and perfection of touch, illuminated by the tremendous pallette of colours subtly arrayed in intensity for Chopin, as in his Debussy. The Italian pianist was a legend in his own lifetime - renowned for his beautifully polished sound, clarity of execution, strict fidelity to the composer and awardness of harmonic subtleties. Everything was planned to the highest degree of musical and technical perfection. He played the way he was - with a seemingly unshakeable aristocratic reserve.

Svjatoslav Richter Richter's fabulous Liszt, virtuoso, seductive, risky ...even Arrau, Cziffra or Brendel at their zenith, would have balked at such a recital. Amongst the composers chosen by Richter during his Soviet and later international career, he returned always to Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Schubert, Haydn, Mozart, Schumann. Then came Liszt, represented by the significant or unusual compositions that the pianist selected and included in his programmes. With his interpretations of these works Horowitz, Arrau and Gilels, his childhood friend, are found challenged musically. Richter's Liszt legacy is revealed as fabulous, heard here in its original purity.

The last production ever staged by Patrice Chéreau, this 'Elektra' will remain as the most striking events of recent years in Aix-en-Provence. "This production, with Esa-Pekka Salonen on the podium, the Orchestre de Paris in the pit, an all-star cast and Patrice Chéreau directing, has been hyped so hard that it would be gratifying to be able to enumerate its imperfections. But there are none. Chéreau, Salonen and their cast get everything so appallingly right... Chéreau takes Hofmannsthal’s chilling libretto to the letter, in the most minutely exacting manner, and Salonen does the same with the score, conducting with all the dispassionate clarity of the gore in a Tarantino film. If it were merely gore, it would be bad enough. Far worse, though, both men see every moment of tenderness in text and score in perfect detail. These murderous family members are not monsters. They are real people, filled with love and yearning, damaged beyond repair. Evelyn Herlitzius lives and breathes the mammoth title role. She is a wild animal, a dirt-smeared urchin in oversized men’s clothes, her wiry body barely containing the huge, disturbing emotions of her matricidal character. Her jerky, broken dance is one of this production’s many unforgettable moments. The opening night audience leapt to its feet to applaud her. As her far more feminine sister, Adrianne Pieczonka is a revelation, with a lavishly creamy voice capable of expressing all the emotions that Elektra forbids herself. Waltraud Meier’s Klytämnestra is so dignified as to be almost harmless, a frail figure whose subsequent slaughter seems out of proportion to her errors. The men are strong, led by Mikhail Petrenko as an unnervingly compassionate Orest. Richard Peduzzi’s sets and Caroline de Vivaise’s costumes set the action somewhere that could be the vestiges of any modern conflict, from the Balkans to Afghanistan, a grey, comfortless world of concrete, fear and oppression. Under Salonen’s merciless direction, the Orchestre de Paris gives the lie to preconceptions about French orchestras and German romanticism, with playing that is transparent, brawny and seductive all at once. The whole is so horribly compelling that it is hard to remember to breathe, and even harder not to join Elektra in eager passion for the closing bloodbath. Chéreau does not even bother with blood; in the end, Orest strangles his mother. It is vile, and utterly wonderful. This production goes on to La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Finnish National Opera, the Liceu in Barcelona and the Staatsoper Berlin. It has all the strengths of Chéreau’s legendary staging of Janácek’s 'From the House of the Dead'. Its shelf life will be long, and it will be talked about for even longer. A triumph for Aix." *****Shirley Apthorp, Financial Times 133 min. (opera 110 min. & bonus 23 min) Bonus: interview with Patrice Chéreau Image: 16/9, NTSC, Sound: PCM Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1
