PROKOFIEV: Piano Sonatas 2, 6 & 8 Alexander Melnikov In this first volume of a complete cycle of the Prokofiev sonatas, his compatriot Alexander Melnikov reveals three emblematic works. The brilliant Second Sonata dates from 1912, when its composer was still a student at the St Petersburg Conservatory; with the Sixth (1939) and Eighth (1944) we meet the master in his full maturity, plunged in the darkest years of the Great Terror and the war. Echoes of his music for the theatre, lyricism and violence mingle amid ultra-virtuoso pianism. 1-4 Piano sonata no.2 op.14 (1913) D minor 5-8 Piano sonata no.6 op.82 (1940) A major 8-11 Piano sonata no.8 op.84 (1944) B flat major

TCHAIKOVSKY: String Quartets 1 & 3 Heath Quartet The Heath Quartet makes its harmonia mundi dĂŠbut with this contrasting programme of Tchaikovsky’s String Quartets: his Quartet No. 1 (famed for its plaintive “Andante cantabileâ€?) and the tempestuous No. 3 (dedicated to the memory of Ferdinand Laub). Since being selected by YCAT and winning 1st Prize at the Tromp Competition in 2008 the Heath Quartet has forged a strong international presence. In 2011 they were awarded a prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Special Ensemble Scholarship and undertook complete Beethoven cycles at the Facyl Festival in Salamanca and in Edinburgh. Highlights over the last year have included recitals at Wigmore Hall as part of the Emerging Talent scheme, including the premiere of a new work by Luke Bedford and collaborations with Stephen Hough and Ian Bostridge. Future engagements include complete Tippett and BartĂłk cycles, and a recital with the soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci at Wigmore Hall, debut recitals at the Louvre and MusĂŠe d’Orsay in Paris, return visits to the Concertgebouw and their USA debut. “The music’s potency and bravura were conveyed with thrilling conviction.â€? The LSO counts the finest orchestral players among its members and many of its principals are renowned soloists in their own right. They have developed new ensembles within the Orchestra to hone their incredible musicianship in different ways: from recent recordings of Reich by the LSO Percussion Ensemble to unique chamber performances of Stravinsky's 'The Soldier’s Tale' and Mozart's 'Gran Partita'. The LSO String Ensemble, directed by Orchestra Leader Roman Simovic, are a key example of this practice, showcasing the wealth of talent that the London Symphony Orchestra has to offer. Following two well-received releases, the LSO String Ensemble continues on LSO Live with three English masterpieces: Vaughan Williams' 'Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis', a visionary fusion of folksong and sacred music; Britten's 'Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge', a challenging landmark of 20th-century string writing, here in a virtuosic performance; and Elgar's 'Introduction and Allegro', a work beloved of the LSO, having been composed for and premiered by the Orchestra. "Delightfully sweet-toned lyricism, and an easy, smiling virtuosity". The Daily Telegraph on Roman Simovic. An acclaimed soloist, performing at many of the world’s most prestigious venues, Roman Simovic has awarded prizes at numerous international competitions, placing him among the foremost violinists of his generation. He says of these pieces: "it’s a big challenge for me to perform this wonderful English programme with an English orchestra. The LSO has a really special, unique, sound and to produce this standing up without a conductor, well it’s quite a challenge! SCHUBERT: String Quartet No. 14 'Death & the Maiden' SIBELIUS: String Quartet 'Intimate Voices' Ehnes Quartet

Death preyed heavily on the minds of both Schubert and Sibelius when they were composing the two string quartets on this new CD from the Ehnes Quartet. Sibelius had undergone several operations to remove a tumour in his throat. The bleak and highly personal 4th Symphony is the masterwork from this period, but the string quartet ‘Intimate Voices’ of 1908 should not be underestimated. Taut and highly concentrated, it has an almost Haydnesque construction, and the quartet’s first movement’s sheer perfection of form approaches that of the 3rd Symphony’s opening movement. "I am the most unhappy and wretched creature in the world‌whose health will never be right again" wrote Schubert to a friend in 1824. With his emotions veering from happy memories of earlier years to shuddering terror at the prospect of death, he composed two string quartets and the Octet over a two- month period. The D minor quartet makes ingenious use of his earlier song ‘Death and the Maiden’ from 1817 in the slow movement’s variations. ‘Give me your hand, you fair and gentle creature; I am a friend and do not come to punish’ sings Death soothingly. The music captures Schubert’s fearful state of mind in a remarkable ‘freeze frame’ effect. The Queen's Harp Les Arts Florissants William Christie At the end of the 18th century, France and Germany developed a passion for harp music; the instrument was everywhere, in concerts and drawing rooms and many masterpieces were written for it. Queen Marie-Antoinette regularly played the pianoforte, and the harp, and the instrument has remained a symbol of the last two decades of the French court.

The harpist Xavier de Maistre has been leading a brilliant career for 25 years. At 22, he became solo harp at the Vienna Philharmonic which opened doors onto an international career. Passionate about his still little-known instrument and its extraordinary repertoire, he has chosen, with William Christie, the most evocative works of this golden age of the harp. They are inseparable from the image of the Queen of France, the elegance of her playing on an instrument which reached unequaled refinement in the age of Louis XIV. LIGETI, Six Bagatelles (1953), Kammerkonzert (1970) Dix pour quintette à vents (1968) Les Siècles, François-Xavier Roth François-Xavier Roth explains why he chose to tackle Ligeti’s work with Les Siècles, an ensemble best-known for playing works on period-appropriate instruments: There is a great desire within Les Siècles to play the music that interests us, music from the past and from the present, music that captivates us: both for myself as conductor and for the musicians. What fascinates us all in Ligeti’s music is this polarisation of colour. It is one of the basic principles of our work. Changing instrument to suit the music being played is not solely whimsical: it is about research, coherence and honouring the work. For Les Siècles, playing Ligeti means taking this exploration further and making it more consistent with the notion of colour.

From my own point of view, my work as a conductor has had a great connection to the composer. I had the chance to work with the SWR Sinfonieorchester of Baden-Baden and Freiburg, an orchestra that worked with Ligeti himself and that has conserved something of his heritage within their own history. Playing Ligeti’s work with them was a unique and fascinating experience. His music, especially the language of later works, like Lontano (1967), Kammerkonzert and his Cello Concerto (1966), is extraordinarily modern. It’s like it was written yesterday. It fascinates me, and I wanted to share this fascination with Les Siècles. PORPORA: Orlando version in 4 cantos by Juan Bautiosta Otera after Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto

Real Compañía Ópera de Cámara Juan Bautista Otero 'Orlando' is an operatic masterpiece by the Neapolitan Composer Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) who left an indelible mark on the 18th century and the careers of its greatest masters, from Hasse, Jommelli and Handel to Joseph Haydn, who was his pupil in Vienna. Against the background of the old Carolingian epic, the valiant knight Roland is transformed here into a lover before becoming 'Orlando furioso' in this encounter of three mythical figures: Ariosto, Metastasio and Porpora. The gamut runs from epic to tragedy in this vibrant, crackling performance under the inspired direction of Juan Bautista Otero. Shostakovich plays Shostakovich

Shostakovich began his career with hopes of becoming a professional pianist, and throughout his life he maintained a close association with this instrument. He enjoyed playing in private and in public, and recorded compositions of his own in the 1940s and 1950s. Some of his most ebullient (Piano Concerto No. 1, op. 35) and personal (Jewish Folk Poetry op.49, Preludes and Fugues, op. 87) scores were written for the piano. Venezia 1700 Thibault Noally (violon) Les Accents Thibault Noally and Les Accents present a celebration of the Venetian Sonata. The term sonata was first coined at the end of the 16th century by Giovanni Croce and Andrea Gabrieli but it was Tartini, born and active in the Venetian Republic, who created some 200 sonatas for violin, the largest body of work in the form, followed by Vivaldi with 80. If Vivaldi borrowed from all an sundry [Caldara, Corelli, Matteis, Bonporti, Albinoni] then others were quick to borrow from him too and the Venetian sonata spread through competing musicians to Germany, via Pisendel and the Dresden court; France with Leclair and Guignone; and Russia with the Venetians Madonis and Dall'Oglio. Thibault Noally is a recognised name on the international baroque stage. He best-known as the solo violin of Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble with Marc Minkowski, with the Concerto KĂśln, Pulcinella or the Ensemble Matheus.

VEJVANOVSKY: Festive Baroque Music for trumpets and strings Ars Antiqua Austria Gunar Letzbor Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky was born in Moravia circa 1633 or 1639. Little is known of his musical education except that he studied in Opava at the Jesuit College (also attended by Heinrich Biber and others). He spent most of his life working as trumpeter and Kapellmeister for the Bishop Princes of Olmuz (res. in Kromeriz). Vejvanovsky was a colleague of Biber when the latter was himself briefly in the employ of Bishop Prince Karl Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn. The two remained in contact with each other throughout their lives and it is understood that they exchanged musical ideas and material with one another. Much of the music presented here includes opulent writing for the trumpet. He wrote in a style similar to the Canzone da Sonar of the early Italians as well as mixing styles of the Viennese, Germans and French.

Petrus Wilhelmi de Grudencz: 15th-century music from Central Europe La Morra Corina Marti & Michal Gondko

The release of a new recording from La Morra is always exciting in terms of creative and imaginative artistry and not just within the realms of late medieval and early Renaissance music. With a disc focusing on the 15th-century composer Petrus Wilhelmi de Grudencz, in a production from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis strand on Glossa, the ensemble is set to repeat its happy knack of alighting upon an area of largely untravelled repertoire and making a fascinating programme from it. Wilhelmi was what can be called a Central-European composer: born in today’s Poland he was active in German, Bohemian and Silesian territory, a musician from within the Holy Roman Empire, and open to new trends coming from the West and South. Without being a cultural force to rival his near contemporary Guillaume Dufay, Wilhelmi provided music which had a long-lasting appeal for the learned, non-professional musicians in Central-European lands. Corina Marti and Michal Gondko, the Swiss ensemble’s joint artistic directors since its formation back in 2000, add their skills as instrumentalists (keyboard, recorders and lute) to those of their quartet of singers in a survey which also embraces further Latin and secular-texted compositions by Nicolaus de Radom, Johannes Tourout and Othmarus Opilionis de Jawor, further examples of how Central European composers were absorbing ideas coming from the Franco-Flemish tradition, Italy and the Ars Nova from France. Programme: Vocal and instrumental pieces by Petrus Wilhelmi de Grudencz (1392-?), Nicolaus de Radom (fl. early 15th century), Johannes Opilionis de Jawor (fl. c.1440), Johannes Tourout (fl. c.1460) and anonymous authors.
