Dixit Dominus: Vivaldi, Mozart, Handel La Capella Reial de Catalunya Le Concert des Nations Jordi Savall Alia Vox presents three composers in three masterpieces based on a cornerstone of the Bible, the psalm 'Dixit Dominus' in the latest programme from Jordi Savall. Following the critically acclaimed 'Magnifcat & Concerti' two years ago, 'Dixit' highlights the full maturity of his ensembles. The vivid orchestral colours, the ideal spacing of the instruments, the effortless virtuosity of the choir, the bright recorded sound bringing out the detail within the works all prove that Jordi Savall has established a new standard for the recording of 18th Century music.

For An Unknown Soldier An Airmail Letter from Mozart

London Mozart Players Melvyn Tan Nicholas Cleobury 'For An Unknown Soldier' is a cantata of remembrance to mark the centenary of the First World War. Commissioned by the London Mozart Players and Portsmouth Grammar School, Jonathan Dove’s poignant work combines the words of war poets such as Wilfred Owen, William Noel Hodgson & Isaac Rosenberg. It lay at the centre of a multi-faceted project that encompassed primary and secondary schools, nursing homes and the local communities of Portsmouth and Croydon. The world premiere of the work took place in November 2014 and there are plans to tour the project in 2018. It is paired with the ensemble’s performance of Dove’s 'An Airmail Letter from Mozart', for 2 horns, string quartet and piano, directed by Melvyn Tan. Dove uses the 'Theme and Variations', and one or two other ideas, from Mozart’s Divertimento K287 to write an imaginary letter to his wife Constanze.

“Naples is the capital of the musical world”, wrote Charles de Brosses in one of his letters from Italy from 1739/1740. He also wrote “Naples is the sole Italian city that seems truly a capital…” and this was not an exaggeration: it was the largest city in 17th century Europe and possessed four conservatories. Musicians trained there spent most of their lives in the service of sovereigns and aristocrats in other major European courts, such as Paris and Vienna. During their lifetime, they were internationally regarded among the finest exponents of their art and their music adds an entirely new dimension to the history of Italian instrumental music. That variety of tastes and colours is the hallmark of this recording from Maurice Steger, devoted to the staggeringly virtuosic music for recorder brought back from Italy by Count Harrach [the Austrian diplomat Aloys Thomas Raimund], who served as Hapsburg viceroy in Naples from 1728 to 1733. Hasse, Vinci, Sammartini, and the less familiar names of Antoni, Fiorenza, Leo and Sarro represent these souvenirs of a six-year gilded exile, which is preserved in his collection of precious manuscripts. Tracklist: 1-3 Giuseppe SAMMARTINI (1695-1750): Concerto per flautino in F Major 4 Lelio COLISTA (1629-1680): Sinfonia à 3 5-7 G.A. HASSE (1699-1783): Cantata per flauto in B flat Major 8-10 Domenico SARRO (1679-1744): Concerto per flauto in D Minor 11 Antonio CALDARA (c. 1671?-1736): Ciaccona a 3 12-15 Leonardo VINCI (c. 1696-1730): Overture & Song from the Opera Elpidia “Tortora che il suo bene” 16 Leonardo LEO (1694-1744): Toccata XIII per cembalo in C Major 17-20 Nicola FIORENZA (c. 1700-1764): Sonata per flauto in A Minor 21-23 A. HANELLE: Cypriot Verses Graindelavoix Björn Schmelzer,

Label: Glossa File Under: Classical/Choral Catalogue No: GCDP32112 Barcode: 8424562321120 FULL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Graindelavoix, Björn Schmelzer,

The little-known composer Jean Hanelle was a professional musician at Cambrai Cathedral and possibly later a teacher of Guillaume Dufay, also spending more than 20 years from 1411 onwards at the French court of Lusignan in Nicosia, Cyprus, a stay which involved him becoming the chapel master there. According to leading scholars, Hanelle was the author of the ars subtilior cycle of Magnificat-antiphons - the so called 'O'-antiphons traditionally performed during the last week of Advent - found in the Codex Turin J.II.9 and included in this new Graindelavoix production. Both the original plainchant and the Hanelle troped antiphons are presented in a series of nine pairs, between which the ensemble also performs an appropriate and context-defining selection of Maronite and Byzantine chants. The Belgian ensemble, as always directed by Björn Schmelzer, performs these pieces, marked by a moving beauty, with one female and eight male singers, producing another of their peculiar and intriguing soundscapes. These Cypriot Vespers come with an interview with Björn Schmelzer carried out by Anne-Kathryn Olsen, a selection of late 19th-century photographs taken in Cyprus by John Thomson, and the first English translation of the antiphons, made by scholar Jeannine De Landtsheer from the University of Leuven. Cycle of nine 'O'-Antiphons for the last week of Advent, both in their reconstructed plainchant versions and Jean Hanelle’s troped versions, plus five pieces from the Maronite and Byzantine traditions.

JS BACH: Goldberg Variations Ignacio Prego

Label: Glossa File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: GCD923510 Barcode: 8424562235106 FULL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: digipack Ignacio Prego [harpsichord]

Ignacio Prego is a leading member of the rising generation of Spanish early music specialists recording for Glossa such as Fahmi Alqhai and Josetxu Obregón. Prego has a busy concert schedule across Europe, the US and Asia, and is frequently to be heard performing harpsichord concertos with ensembles such as the The English Concert, collaborating with eminent musicians such as Monica Huggett and Nicholas McGegan, or giving solo harpsichord recitals, where he is able to demonstrate his special preference for the works of J.S. Bach. This new recording of Bach's 'Goldberg Variations' represents Prego’s third solo CD but his first for Glossa. Heard playing a splendid copy of a 1738 Christian Vater harpsichord on this Federico Prieto-engineered recording, Ignacio Prego illustrates perfectly the points put forward in scholar David Schulenberg’s essay for the booklet, in which particular emphasis is placed on Bach’s threefold cycling of the 30 variations, each time combining one free variation, one duet and a canon. Fine photographs from Noah Shaye round up a new inspiring Glossa title. The release of this recording will precede various international performances from Prego, including two US tours, first in November 2016 and then in March 2017, at venues such as the Benaroya Hall in Seattle and the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. 1 Aria 2-31 Variatio 1 - 30 32 Aria da capo

Peter Schreier Mozart-Lieder The concert that brought together Peter Schreier, the leading Mozart tenor of the 1970s from Dresden, and Erik Werba, the Vienna-born doyen of lied accompanists on 25 January 1978 featured 17 songs, the cantata with piano accompaniment “Die ihr des unermesslichen Weltalls Schöpfer ehrt” K619 from the final year of Mozart’s life, as well as two encore pieces. Schreier and Werba obviously intended to present Mozart’s entire lied repertoire, except for those songs whose texts were too obviously written from the perspective of a female protagonist. From today’s perspective the interpretation of the Mozart songs in this recital is remarkably homogeneous. For Peter Schreier, the opera singer, Mozart was the first true romantic composer. The songs are presented in a deeply emotional, but never sentimental manner. The chosen tempos are therefore rather on the slow side of the spectrum and here as well as in the ballad-like song “Das Veilchen” K476, Schreier makes it apparent how he reads Mozart’s mature, through-composed songs as text based and text centered, as if they were foreshadowing Schubert, Schumann and Brahms.

Alhambra, a musical tour

From the Arab conquest to the 20th century, Granada was at once the centre and the object of intense musical creation, embodied in the emblematic Alhambra Palace and its gardens, the subjects of musical fantasies of all kinds. It was a fascination shared by those who actually visited those places (Isaac Albéniz, Joaquín Turina) and those who went there in their imagination (Manuel de Falla, Claude Debussy). From the Puerta del Vino to the Albaicín by way of the Generalife, this selection invites you to discover a thousand years of musical magic.

Music in the châteaux of the Loire In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Royal court resided from time to time in the Loire Valley. Its châteaux were the showcase for an intense musical life. These palaces which have since become the emblems of the French Renaissance resounded to music that today’s artists have rediscovered in concert and on record. Drawing widely on that repertoire, this programme is an evocation of the round of pleasures, festivities, hunts and dances that regulated the days and nights of the court of France, and of the ‘joyous life’ that reigned there for decades.

Music at Sanssouci

An enthusiastic amateur flautist, Frederick the Great always gave music a key place in his daily schedule, as can be seen in the musical ornaments in the decoration of his palace. Indeed, the Music Room is one of the finest rooms in this little Rococo jewel. Works by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and his father Johann Sebastian, as well as Johann Gottlieb Graun and the King of Prussia himself are the central focus of this programme. They vividly evoke the musical atmosphere for which Sanssouci was the most elegant showcase.
