Graham Ross directs The Choir of Clare College, Cambridge in a programme of English and Spanish music for the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls, culminating in Tomás Luis de Victoria’s six-part 1605 'Requiem'. It has been seen by many as a Requiem for an Age - the end of Spain's golden century, the end of Renaissance music, and indeed, the end of Victoria's own life - it was his last published work before his death in 1611. Like it's predecessors in this Clare College, Cambridge series based on the major festivals in the Anglican calendar this volume is produced, engineered and edited by John Rutter and is accompanied by an excellent booklet note by Graham Ross. With a voice described as "one of the most beautiful Britain has seen in a generation" (IRR), Elizabeth Watts has established herself among the brightest talents performing today. After training as a chorister at Norwich Cathedral, Elizabeth went on to study archaeology at Sheffield University before attending the Royal College of Music in London. Her many prizes include the 2006 Kathleen Ferrier Prize (UK), the 2007 Outstanding Young Artist Award at the Cannes MIDEM Classique Awards and the Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize at the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. A former ‘BBC New Generation Artist’, she received a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2011 and this recording is supported by the Trust. Her critically praised debut recording of Schubert Lieder was followed by an equally acclaimed disc of Bach Cantatas (harmonia mundi), a programme of Richard Strauss Lieder with Roger Vignoles, and a recording of Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the Academy of Ancient Music led by Richard Egarr. In this selection of rarely heard Alessandro [rather than Domenico] Scarlatti arias from his cantatas, oratorios and operas, she is joined by the acclaimed period instrument ensemble The English Concert led by Laurence Cummings. Elizabeth is currently recording Couperin's 'Lecons de Tenebres' with Lucy Crowe and La Nuova Musica for harmonia mundi. Audio 2.0 Stereo and multi-channel, Total playing time 90m (approx) 2 X jewel cases with clear trays & booklet in slipcase: 2xSACD hybrid discs+ 1 Pure Audio Bluray. Notes in English, French and German.
In his debut recording on LSO Live, Sir Simon Rattle conducts a stunning performance of Schumann’s rarely recorded 'Das Paradies und die Peri' featuring a superb line-up of soloists. Rattle is well-known for being a champion of this work, yet this is his first audio recording of it. It is brought to life by the LSO and a starry line-up of soloists under his baton, making the best possible case for Schumann’s oratorio. Sir Simon Rattle says of the piece, "It’s the great masterpiece you’ve never heard, and there aren’t many of those now…In Schumann’s life it was the most popular piece he ever wrote; it was performed endlessly. Wagner wrote how jealous he was that Schumann had done it and he’d stolen this subject that he wanted to do and how extraordinary it was". Based on an episode from Thomas Moore’s epic poem 'Lalla Rookh', itself inspired by exotic, colourful tales from Persian mythology, 'Das Paradies und die Peri' reflects the 19th-century craze for all things Oriental. Completed in 1843, Schumann’s secular oratorio tells how the Peri, a legendary creature, was expelled from paradise and follows her quest to redeem herself by giving the gift that is most dear to heaven. Writing about the work in a letter to a friend, Schumann said, "at the moment I’m involved in a large project, the largest I’ve yet undertaken – it’s not an opera – I believe it’s well-nigh a new genre for the concert hall." Conceived in three beautifully sequenced parts, it is unlike any oratorio of Schumann’s day. Sustained melodic invention is clear throughout, with Peri’s high C in the finale forming a deftly timed climax. Soprano Sally Matthews gives a soaring performance as Peri, showcasing Schumann’s imaginative and emotive vocal writing, and there are superb supporting performances from Mark Padmore, Kate Royal, Bernarda Fink, Andrew Staples and Florian Boesch. This release is the major priority of the autumn. A promotional trailer with Sir Simon Rattle and full collection of photography will be available to accompany the release and marketing activity. Sir Simon Rattle [& Bernarda Fink] will perform Debussy's 'Pelleas et Mélisande' in London with the London Symphony Orchestra and London Symphony Chorus on the 9th and 10th January 2016 which will be recorded for LSO Live. "It received as good a performance as could be imagined. Every strength of Schumann’s art is showcased... [Rattle’s] passion for this piece was obvious from his every gesture." The Arts Desk ***** "Sally Matthews as the Peri fully engaged our sympathies for the resourceful spirit, capturing alike her plaintive entreaties and her vibrant exultation at the prospect of redemption." J.S. BACH: Preludes & Fugues Rinaldo Alessandrini For his first solo harpsichord recording in five years, Rinaldo Alessandrini has selected a very personal selection of preludes and fugues by Johann Sebastian Bach. These short works are not part of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and the Roman maestro Alessandrini has connected them by key and by their spirit in order to build a unique recital shedding new light on Bach’s music. Rinaldo Alessandrini, harpsichordist, fortepianist and organist, in addition to his role as founder-director of Concerto Italiano, has been a presence on the early music scene for some 20 years now. His discography includes not only Italian music, but also composers of the German school. It has garnered the highest critical plaudits, including two Grands Prix du Disque, three Deutsche Schallplattenpreise, and as of 2015 five Gramophone Awards, all for discs with Concerto Italiano. He now records exclusively for Naïve.

“This recording seeks to offer a coherent collection of compositions, unheard of at the time, that differ in both style and period: isolated preludes, brought together in small didactic collections with equally-isolated fugues, that were composed without the introduction that usually preceded them. Much, but not all, of this music dates back to Köthen. It takes us on a journey through different collections: the Clavierbüchlein for Wilhelm Friedmann; the Menpell-Preller manuscript dating 1730-1740 and having belonged to Johann Nikolaus Mempell, a student of Bach; the various ‘Kellner manuscripts’. We have coupled ‘preludes and fugues’ according to their tonality and assembled them using contrasting criteria.” R.A.

Commissioned by the Mariinsky in 2002, 'Cinderella' was the production that launched choreographer Alexei Ratmansky onto the world stage. Filmed in 2013 and now released on DVD and Blu-ray for the first time, the production stars one of the foremost prima ballerinas in the world today, Diana Vishneva. Recently described by The Telegraph as being "as close to physical and technical perfection as it is possible to be", Vishneva delivers a dazzling performance, and is conducted by leading Prokofiev interpreter, Valery Gergiev. Ratmansky is the world’s most influential ballet-maker, credited with revitalising classical dance through a series of highly individual productions. He breathes new life into Prokofiev’s ballet, weaving together an array of different styles and echoing the complexities of the composer’s score. The set, beautifully designed by Ilya Utkin and Yeveny Monakhov, transports us to the 20th century and this is reflected in the choreography’s contemporary edge, which goes from lively court dances to a stunning pas de deux between Cinderella and her prince. What results is a fresh and modern account of the classic fairytale, with stunning performances from both the Mariinsky dancers and Mariinsky Orchestra. This Autumn the Mariinsky Ballet will tour the USA, performing this production of Prokofiev's 'Cinderella'. Performance Reviews: "When ballet is played and performed like this, it is the most natural and expressive art form there is. Clever Ratmansky. Wonderful Mariinsky." The Telegraph, ***** "Gergiev teases out every tonal and chromatic subtlety; the result is complex and bittersweet, with a lovely sad shimmer to the strings... On stage, the evening is Vishneva’s… she and her dancing are quite heart-stoppingly beautiful." The Guardian

VIVALDI: The Four Seasons TARTINI: Devil’s Trill Sonata, LECLAIR: Tambourin Sonata
James Ehnes James Ehnes takes a break from the 19th and 20th century repertoire and has recorded for the first time in his career four of the most famous baroque violin concertos – Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the first four works in his set of 12, Op. 8. James also directs the Sydney Symphony. Vivaldi provided his own sonnets as prefaces to each of the concertos and these are available from the Onyx website. The Vivaldi is prefaced by two famous violin sonatas – Tartini’s 'Devils Trill' in the skilful arrangement by Fritz Kreisler which is very faithful to the original text, to which Kreisler adds the famous cadenza in the finale. Leclair, one the few composers to have been murdered, was known as ‘The French Corelli’. Of his Op. 9 set of 12 sonatas for violin, the third has become the most popular for its ‘Tambourin’ finale, depicting a pipe-and-drum dance with drone effects - all good fun!

This album dedicated to Camille Saint-Saëns came about as a result of a sensational performance of the Concerto No. 2, performed in 2014 with the BBCSO. Convinced of the value of this, the label Aparté and BBC radio decided to join forces to produce, under the same conditions, the Concerto No. 5 to complete this transcendent programme. Swiss-Chinese pianist Louis Schwizgebel has been described as “a pianist with a profound gift” by the Guardian (August 2013), an “insightful musician” by the New York Times (May 2013) and “already one of the great masters of the piano” by Res Musica (July 2014). At the age of 17 he won the Geneva International Music Competition and, two years later, the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. In 2012 he won second prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition and he is a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist 2015/16. Louis records for Aparté and his first solo disc, 'Poems', [AP067] which features works by Ravel, Liszt, Holliger and Schubert was released in 2013 to exceptional critical claim. Germany’s Fono Forum gave the disc four stars and hailed Louis “a genuine virtuoso, a spirited young genius with real depth”. His recording of Beethoven’s First and Second Piano Concertos with the London Philharmonic Orchestra/Thierry Fischer [AP098] was released at the end of 2014.
“Swiss pianist Louis Schwizgebel first caught the classical music world’s attention with a blistering performance of Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto at the 2012 Leeds International Competition… Schwizgebel already has two recordings under his belt- a disc of chamber music by Brahms and a recital disc, issued in September this year on the Aparte Label.” Rising Star, BBC Music Magazine- Christmas 2013 CONCERTS: 14th November Brighton Dome [Ravel] 17th December Barbican wt BBCSO/Gardiner

"With only my cello for travelling-companion, I have visited the four corners of the globe, often playing the Catalan master Gaspar Cassadó’s cello sonata, a living metaphor for Spain, his native territory. From the very first note, we are standing on the hard-baked earth of Andalusia under a burning sun. The silvery olives, gnarled and desiccated though they are, bear wondrous fruit; the scent of the orange trees and jasmine invades our senses so recently wakened from the depths of a stolen siesta as we sit beneath an arbour by a Mozarabic fountain. Cassadó’s piece was the inspiration that engendered this recording, albeit in secret, and allowed me to fulfil my deep wish to touch your hearts with the vivid impressions and emotions I experienced in the course of my travels. To share this dream, I needed to surround myself with outstanding musicians, each one of them alive to all the nuances of their respective art and traditions, deeply-rooted and yet free to go where they pleased and open to every suggestion." Ophélie Gaillard 'Alvorada': a musical tour from Spain to Latin America (Brazil, Argentina, Cuba) featuring, in particular, the composers Villa-Lobos, Granados, Piazzolla and Jobim. In an exceptional mixture of classical pieces and arrangements the cello sings with the bandoneon, dances with the piano, guitar or percussion, and abandons itself in amorous intimacy with the voices.

There’s an infinite choice of immense, immortal music and I always try and design concert programmes a bit like a setlist for the audience. For this compilation (of my personal recordings from the last six years) I wanted to carry on in that vein and so I’ve made it a mix tape - these are the pieces that come up in my head unwarranted at 4am to get me through another rotten night of insomnia. SFZ Music is delighted to present this latest recording of His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, featuring a selection of instrumental and sacred vocal music by Gioseffo Guami. Although little known today, Guami was one of the most renowned musicians in all of Italy during the High Renaissance, enjoying an illustrious career. Following an apprenticeship with Adrian Willaert, Guami was deputy to Orlande de Lassus in Munich, and then organist at St Mark’s, Venice, alongside Giovanni Gabrieli, before returning to his native and beloved city of Lucca (hence the Canzona ‘La Luchesina’ and the title of this CD). Guami’s vocal music demonstrates both a mastery of counterpoint and a sensitivity to text setting that marks him out as one of the forward-looking composers of his time. His surviving instrumental music often includes elaborate written-out ornamentation, giving us a rare glimpse of the style of virtuosic passagework that the most expert instrumentalists of the time might otherwise have improvised. The influence of his encounters with some of the greatest composers of the period is audible in Guami’s music, but nevertheless, the distinct and individual voice of this neglected master musician shines throughout the music in this collection. When the coveted position of first organist at St Mark’s, Venice became vacant in 1588, the leading musicians of the basilica were consulted and were unanimous in recommending Gioseffo Guami for the position. Their written testimonies survive and speak very clearly of the high esteem in which he was held by some of the finest musicians of his age. Under the tuition and supervision of Jamie Savan the performing editions for this project came to fruition in partnership with Newcastle University music department. Beautifully performed by His Majestys Sagbutts & Cornetts, with organist Jan Waterfield and superb singing from Nicholas Mulroy and Eamonn Dougan, this CD presents a rich and fascinating programme.

How does one reinvent concertos that already have a long and rather distinguished history of recording? This is, of course, rhetorical, for there is always room for one more 'Brandenburg' or 'Goldberg', and furthermore, these works are always part and parcel of residencies in the many early music festivals, often resulting in a recording of a particular ensemble to celebrate the occasion or, as is the case with the Simphonie du Marais, a series of works that form their core repertory. We have already issued a number of discs by this group, in residence at La Chabotterie in Vendée, France, which focus on French music of the ancien régime, including operas by Lully, Rameau and Rebel. Now we are delighted to present some of their back catalogue, inclusing Handel's recorder concertos and music at the court of Cardinal Richelieu. These are listed in the cd booklet and also listed below. In stock now. We can expect their rendition of the 'Brandenburgs' at a later date. "The recorder playing by Reyne is dexterous and brilliant, particularly in Vivaldi’s tortuous roulades, leaps, and figuration. There is no doubt that the composer has pushed the limits of his instrument (whether traverso or recorder), and that he expected no less than for a complete virtuoso to be able to negotiate the sinuous, fiendishly rapid lines without faltering. Heyne does this with seeming ease. The accompaniment by his small band is also well in tune and facile... A reading through the rather personal notes shows that this disc is more of a paean to Reyne’s teachers [including Franz Brüggen] than an exploration of the Vivaldi repertory. Given that it is well performed, this tribute should be seen as a true honor." arkivmusik.com ALSO AVAILABLE: MC002 Rameau La Naissance d'Osiris ou La fête Pamilie 605004 Handel 6 Recorder Concertos 605005 Musiques au temps de Richelieu [2cds] 605006 Rameau Concerts mis en simphonie 605007 Viennoiseries musicales 1806-26: Heberle, Gebauer, Scholl, Csernak 605010 Musiques pour les comédies de Molière

Domenico ZIPOLI: Complete Suites & Partitas Suite I in B Minor; Suite II in G Minor; Suite III in C Major; Partita in C Major; Suite IV in D Minor Partita in A Minor
Giovanni Nesi Domenico Zipoli, an Italian Jesuit composer of the Baroque era, is justly celebrated for the liturgical music he produced in South America. Less familiar, although popular at the time, are the secular works he composed in Italy in the early 18th century. His collection ‘Sonate d’intavolatura’, charming and tuneful in style, contains both suites and partitas for keyboard. Giovanni Nesi gave the world premiere performances of these works by his compatriot, Zipoli, on the modern piano, in Prato, Italy, on December 2014. Recognised for the intensity and originality of his interpretations, Giovanni Nesi has been singled out for several high profile awards throughout his career, including the prestigious William Walton award, given by William Walton Foundation in Ischia, and in recent seasons he has given recitals in the main musical centres of Italy, Holland, Greece, Spain and France.

John Baldwin was a lay clerk at St George’s Chapel, Windsor in 1575 and became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1598. The so-called ‘Baldwin Partbooks’, held at Christ Church, Oxford, were his creation – a very personal collection, representing his individual tastes and interests from a wealth of English and Continental polyphony and consort music. As in their previous collaboration, an exploration of the similarly conceived partbooks of Robert Dow, the Marian Consort and Rose Consort of Viols have kept faith with Baldwin’s own intentions, bringing to light some of the rarer gems preserved by this great advocate and music-lover and providing the listener with ‘such sweete musicke: as dothe much delite yeelde’. The Marian Consort has to date released four CDs with Delphian Records which have met with considerable critical acclaim. The ensemble’s most recent release, of a Christmas mass and motets by Jean Mouton, Cristóbal de Morales and Annibale Stabile (DCD34145), was ‘Christmas Choice’ in BBC Music magazine. Hans Knappertsbusch's 1960 Meistersinger from the Bayreuth Festival benefits from a sense of vocal collaboration that is untypical of Wagner performances. Here, a highly colourful ensemble offers the vital variety necessary for its characters and this is a happy mixture of proven older voices, younger voices that are just getting established, and an impressive debut in the role of Sachs by the 47-year-old Josef Greindl. However, the star of the performance is undoubtedly the 72-year-old newcomer to the production, Hans Knappertsbusch. His interpretation of this complex, tricky work is anything but Teutonic and heavy, but instead consciously cultivated and restrained, always supportive of the voices, relaxed, and with a chamber-music lightness in the dialogues (good in this work and precludes any sense of longueurs!). The impact of the fugue during the brawl in the second act, for example, is all the greater performed as a great arch (and with a great sense of fun in the hubbub it makes), and the excitement lasts all the way to the end of the act. The manner in which Kna savours the dances on the festive meadow is also astonishing, displaying something between the magically twee and the gruffly rustic, all in careful doses, and conjoined with audible pleasure; this is truly “festive”! In contrast to a market blighted with by pirated and unauthorised editions, much care has been invested here in restoring the original sound. The booklet is adorned by exclusive stills from the Bayreuth archives and a highly stimulating essay by Peter Emmerich on the dramaturgical situation in Bayreuth in 1960 and its impact on the Festival audiences. In Memoriam Maureen Forrester MAHLER: Des Knaben Wunderhorn, R端ckert Lieder The renowned Canadian singer Maureen Forrester, was the owner of one of the most distinctive contralto voices of her generation. Chosen by Bruno Walter, a protege of Gustav Mahler, for the contralto role in the composer's 'Resurrection' Symphony at Carnegie Hall in 1957, she followed up that New York Philharmonic performance with many others, under a wide range of leading conductors. Regarded by Walter and others as the successor to Kathleen Ferrier, she excelled in Mahler, but was also known for her roles in opera and oratorio, as well as in Broadway musicals. Often with the Swiss bass-baritone Heinz Rehfuss, she did justice to the ambivalence of the texts, with impeccable German diction, which are supplied here in German. This disc provides a rewarding account of 'Des Knaben Wunderhorn', in excellent sound for 1963, recorded in the Grosse Saal, Vienna. The five R端ckert Lieder date from Berlin in 1956.

Extraordinary artists in extraordinary recordings on an extraordinary format: these are the criteria for audite’s LP releases. Hot off the press is Furtwängler’s last performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, now available on premium 180g vinyl (DMM). Wilhelm Furtwängler conducted Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony more than 100 times. In August 1954, three months before his death, he directed his last performance in Lucerne which proved to be an “elemental musical event” (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). Alongside the brilliant Philharmonia Orchestra and a starry cast of soloists, Furtwängler accentuates the visionary character of this monumental score: he charges the outer movements with an almost unbearable sense of suspense and interprets the lyrical passages, especially the slow third movement, cantabile and in flexible tempi. Comparing this 'Lucerne Ninth' to Furtwängler’s other benchmark interpretations of the Ninth – such as his famous performances in Berlin (1942) and Bayreuth (1951) – allows for a closer examination of the constants and changes in his very subjective view of Beethoven’s final symphony. For the release of this concert recording as part of the series 'Lucerne Festival Historic Performances', the original tapes from the archives of SRF Swiss Radio and Television have been newly re-mastered. The pitch has been adjusted anew so that the recording, for the first time, sounds as close to the original as possible; closer than ever before. This correction in pitch not only changes the lengths of the movements, but also the dramaturgy – the 3rd movement, for example, is almost 17 seconds longer than on comparable recordings, which considerably changes the musical expression. Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954), who spent the final years of his life in Clarens on Lake Geneva, was one of the defining artists of the Internationale Musikfestwochen Luzern, today’s Lucerne Festival. Whereas Arturo Toscanini played an important role during the festival’s founding years of 1938/39, Furtwängler was instrumental in establishing it as one of the then small number of great festivals. In 1944, he came to Lucerne for the first time to conduct two concerts; from 1947 – after his conducting ban had been lifted – until his death he came to Lucerne each summer (with the exception of 1952) where he enjoyed a special status.

Constantly inspired by pioneering, thrilling and exhilarating ideas, American-Estonian conductor Kristjan Järvi has gathered works spanning 40 years of Pärt’s compositions, as a culmination of of years of collaboration, musical exploration and spiritual connection. SIBELIUS: Symphony No. 2 Op. 43 The Return of Lemmink채inen Friend of Mahler, fasinated by the art of Wagner, dazzled by the audacity of Schoenberg or Busoni, Sibelius was not yet 30 when he became fixated on the Finnish myths and songs of the Kalevala. Paul Daniel and his ONBA have recorded Sibelius, in his anniversary year, for Actes Sud after a series of concerts this Spring. Daniel draws inspiration from 'Lemmink채inen Legends', composed between 1893 and 1895. Six years later, Sibelius traveled to Italy at the invitation of Baron Axel Capelin and meditated on a symphonic poem around the character of Don Juan. However his writing philosophy changed and mutated into Symphony No. 2, which was premiered March 8, 1802 in Helsinki.

Label: La Dolce Volta File Under: Classical/Instrumental Catalogue No: LDV20 Barcode: 3770001901398 NORMAL Price Format: 1 CD Packaging: deluxe digipack Roger Muraro [piano]
From the B minor Sonata to the Wagner transcriptions, the works of Franz Liszt find an outstanding interpreter in Roger Muraro. Accustomed to conceiving chords as colours, the pianist transports us from shadows to light with highly nuanced playing, dazzling energy and prodigious virtuosity. A performance deeply moving in its simplicity, transcended by a recording of demonstration quality for his first release on La Dolce Volta. Born to Venetian parents in Lyon, Roger Muraro studied with Yvonne Loriod at the Paris Conservatoire and met Olivier Messiaen. He quickly became established as one of the leading interpreters of the French composer, to whom he devoted a complete recording of the solo piano works, finished in 2001, that earned unanimous critical acclaim. His performances without a score of 'Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus' and the complete 'Catalogue d’oiseaux' are regarded as not only a prodigious feat, but also an intimate appropriation of the works of Messiaen, with which he identifies totally. While he is gifted with a dazzling technique, having studied for several years with Éliane Richepin, and won prizes at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the Liszt Competition in Parma, his playing is invariably placed at the service of poetry and sincerity. His artistry is equally at home in Mussorgsky, Ravel, Albéniz, Rachmaninoff, Debussy and in Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, from whose music he extracts the full range of emotion, colours, Romanticism and sonics. Roger Muraro is a welcome recitalist in the world’s leading concert halls and works with today’s foremost conductors and most prestigious ensembles. Eclectic, open to a musical world without frontiers, he now distils his experience as a pianist and his pedagogical skills for the students of the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. This is the first recording of works by the Portuguese composer, Jeronimo Francisco de Lima [1741-1822]. The Royal Court Opera was an essential element in the reigns of D. José I (1750-1777) and D. Maria I (1777-1816), even after the disastrous earthquake of 1755 destroyed the magnificent opera house that stood on the banks of the Tagus river. Obviously operatic composition was not merely a sideline for Lima, but rather an area to which he was seriously dedicated, and which he mastered. Moreover, his instrumental writing went far beyond a simple harmonic support to the melody of the singer but plays a prominent part in its own right, a characteristic which certainly stems from his Neapolitan training. The overtures of the four works featured on this CD are in no way inferior to the sung parts that follow. Medea, the witch in 'Teséo', has the most expressive music of all Lima's characters, here impressively sung by Monika Mauch.

Since ancient times, the theme of the seasons has fascinated and inspired the human creative spirit. This recording is a musical triptych: three cycles of seasons, three countries, three languages and worldviews of composers who addressed the theme of the seasons in three centuries, the 19th, 20th and 21st. Tchaikovsky's Opus 37, commisioned in 1875, on the twelve months of the year is followed by Piazzolla's 'Four Seasons of Buenos Aires' in a new piano version from 2013 by Marcelo Nisinman, the Argentinian composer and bandoneon player. Originally composed by Piazzolla for his quintet they were not conceived as a suite. 'Summer' is a tango written in 1965 for the play 'Golden Hair', 'Autumn' dates from 1969 and the other two seasons were written in 1970. Also in 2013, pianist Filipe Pinto-Ribeiro challenged Eurico Carrapatoso, a fellow inhabitant of Lisbon, to compose a cycle on the theme of their city and the seasons of the year. The result was 'Four Last Seasons of Lisbon', which Carrapatoso completed in June 2014.

2015 has been a good, sun-filled year for Jean-Claude Gandrille. The Auvers sur Oise Festival has chosen him as its guest composer. To be fair, he is already well-acquainted with the town, beloved of the Impressionist painters, as he serves as organist there for the Église Notre-Dame. During the festival, ten concerts will include his works; it’s a sort of consecration for this improvising organist and composer. The violin concerto has a surprising story in two parts; two parts that are far apart from one another. The first was a poem for violin, subtitled 'Beyond, Towards the Azure…' conceived in 2004 and clearly engaged with Henri Dutilleux’s music and poetic sense. Gandrille met Dutilleux and showed him the score, intended for the Queen Elizabeth of Belgium composition competition. The manuscript then slumbered in Gandrille’s archives until 2011, when Marcel Khalifé, a brilliant Lebanese oud-player and singer who sits on the board of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, suggested a performance in Doha for March 2012. But the piece was very short: a mere ten minutes. “And what if you were to write a second movement?” Gandrille set to work on the new movement immediately. The 'Minimalist-Concerto' is surprising from the perspective of its instrumentation, as both the piano and organ dialogue with the orchestra. As with the violin concerto, the work was premiered in Doha, in March 2013.

The documents presented on this DVD propose a musical journey through this wide range of topics focused on Iannis Xenakis and his work 'Linaia Agon'. Conceived by the great new music trombonist Benny Sluchin, it is an interpreter’s quest for truth regarding musical creation, a legendary composer and musical performance at the beginning of the 21st century. 'Linaia-Agon' (1972) scored for the unusual combination of trombone, French horn & tuba, was an unduly neglected work because of performance problems in the printed score. Those remained unresolved until a computer interface was developed recently by IRCAM in collaboration with Benny Sluchin. It is a 'game' piece in which 3 musicians, representing the legendary Greek musician Linos [trombone] against the god Apollo [French horn & tuba], battle each via musical strategies in the score. No two versions of this piece will be the same. 'Zythos' is one of Xenakis’ last works. Previously issued on MODE261, this DVD release is the first in surround sound with full video directed by Anton Cabaliero. OTHER FEATURES in addition to the musical performances: • Linaia-Agon by Iannis Xenakis: Surpassing One’s Limits A film by Benny Sluchin (78 minutes), which explores the work in detail through films & recordings of Xenakis himself (in rare footage) and a wide group of people speak of the music and Xenakis’ relation to Greek mythology, mathematics, open-form composition, game theory and computer assisted performance. Sluchin explains the development of the computer interface which assists with the performance with, in alphabetical order, Moreno Andreatta, Gérard Assayag, Jérémie Dufourt, Sharon Kanach, Mikhail Malt, Jens McManama, Pierre Michel, Benny Sluchin, Makis Solomos, and Iannis Xenakis. • Iannis Xenakis on 'Double Audition': French radio broadcast from 1974 on 'Linaia-Agon'. Xenakis is interviewed, with two complete performances and musical excerpts live in the studio (57:31, no video) • INTERACTIVE INTERFACE allows the viewer to perform the piece on computer using sound samples, engaging in a musical battle while gathering points to reveal the final victor. The DVD includes a filmed demonstration of how to use this interface which can be accessed on the internet. • The films are in French with English and French subtitles.

This recording features the Bugallo-Williams Duo playing György Kurtág's complete works for piano duet and two pianos as included in the eight published volumes of 'Játékok'. The work's original concept was as a collection of pedagogical performance pieces, and the composer has been adding to the series since 1973. Eight volumes had been published as of 2010 and volumes IV and VIII are for piano 4-hands or two pianos. In addition to a focus on rhythm and time, Kurtág also addresses techniques including using palms, fists and forearms as a means of exploring the keyboard. In his transcriptions, Kurtág also embraces music from Machaut to J. S. Bach, passing through Orlando di Lasso, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Heinrich Schütz, and Henry Purcell. The transcriptions in this volume bear no less weight than Kurtág’s original compositions and exploit the particular transparency of the piano.

Narrator David Tennant invites you to share in a strange adventure: a jazz big band adaptation of Prokofiev’s famous tale. Jazz instruments take the place of the classical orchestra in this innovative adaption and in addition The Amazing Keystone Orchestra introduce listeners to the sound of the big band and to the history of jazz. The booklet relates the story in a series of magnificently realised illustrations (by Martin Jarrie). Commissioned by the Festival Jazz a Vienne where it was first performed on June 28th 2012, this 'non-classical' Peter and the Wolf aimed to introduce children to all forms of jazz. In 1936 the composer of Ivan the Terrible offered an introduction to the instruments of the classical orchestra. Three-quarters of a century later, this new recording allows listeners to explore the sounds of a big band, along with the history of jazz and improvisation through its evolution and its various genres. This artistic initiative uses a formation very close to the typical Duke Ellington band: 2 alto saxes, 2 tenors, 1 baritone, 4 trombones, 4 trumpets and the rhythm section made up of the only strings in the group: piano, double bass and guitar. The only addition to this classic big band line up, indispensible for the bird, is the flute and, replacing the fourth bass trombone, the tuba. David Tennant is the Scottish actor known for his roles as the 10th Doctor in the British television series 'Doctor Who', Alec Hardy in 'Broadchurch', Giacomo Casanova in the eponymous TV serial and Barty Crouch, Jr. in 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. In addition to his appearances on screen, Tennant has worked as a voice actor, most recently for cult TV series 'W1A' and appeared as a critically acclaimed 'Hamlet' for the RSC. In January 2015, Tennant received the National Television Award for Special Recognition. The Amazing Keystone Big Band is a jazz band led by Fred Nardin, Jon Boutellier, Bastien Ballaz and David Enhco. The band’s 18 members are among the best and most active of the new generation of French jazz musicians. More detailed information and audio and video extracts are available on the big band’s website: www.theamazingkeystonebigband.com.
