SCHUBERT: The Complete Matthias Goerne Lieder Edition Matthias Goerne's Schubert survey has established him as one of the most gifted exponents of the song repertoire. Goerne does not merely ‘interpret' Schubert: he 'lives' each song and invites the listener to share this poetry and musical intimacy. Each of the nine albums in this set was designed as an individual programme, a poetic voyage through the vast corpus of Schubert’s lieder. Matthias Goerne made his personal selection from the songs, in which the three great cycles sit alongside many masterpieces like 'Des Fischers LiebesglĂźck', an interpretation which in itself would be enough to justify this magnificent undertaking.
"simply unmissable...and for two prime reasons - the grave beauty of its programme and the corresponding beauty of the singer's voice." Gramophone Feb 2010 “*RHUQH XVHG WR UHFRUG IRU 'HFFD EXW LW DSSDUHQWO\ KDG QR LQWHUHVW LQ KLV YROXPH 6FKXEHUW FRPSHQGLXP VR WKH

Music of the Spheres: Part Songs of the British Isles Tenebrae Nigel Short Internationally-renowned chamber choir Tenebrae return with a new collection of British part songs and choral works. As well as being a celebration of compositions by British composers, the disc also marks Shakespeare’s anniversary year with a selection of works based on his texts, including the much loved works by Vaughan Williams and a lesser-known set by Herbert Murrill. Perhaps the least recognisable composer name on this disc, Murrill (1909-1952) is one of a select group of composers who – through war or ill-health – died at a tragically young age and whose works were subsequently neglected during the second half of the century.

Roy HARRIS, John ADAMS: Violin Concertos Tamsin Waley-Cohen BBC Symphony Orchestra Andrew Litton Violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen continues her series of concerto recordings on Signum with two contrasting works by American composers. Already considered by many to be a modern classic, John Adams 1993 Violin Concerto was described by the composer as having a ‘hypermelody’, in which the soloist plays longs phrases without stop for the duration of the 35 minute piece. Although composed in 1949, the first performance of Roy Harris’s Violin Concerto didn’t occur until 1984. Since then it has been championed for its “luminous orchestration and exalted tone”. For this recording Tamsin Waley-Cohen is joined by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under American conductor Andrew Litton.

This disc is about music from our days: 1990s to 2015. I am bringing two worlds together on So many things. In fact I don’t see them as two worlds at all, but just plain old good, interesting, attractive music that moves and inspires me." Anne Sofie von Otter

It was in 2015 that Julien Chauvin decided to bring back to life one of the most famous orchestras of the late 18th century, Le Concert de la Loge Olympique. Founded in 1783 and owing its lasting fame for having commissioned Joseph Haydn's 'Paris' Symphonies, it gave its first concerts under the high patronage of Marie-Antoinette, hence the subtitle of the fourth 'Paris' Symphony: 'La Reine'. Although the name has been slightly changed today, now called Le Concert de la Loge, this ensemble perpetuates the same tradition of excellence as its illustrious namesake. On the programme, of course, recording the cycle of these 'Paris' Symphonies and, to get the series off to a start, this famous 'Reine'. Julien Chauvin combines not only instrumental works by various composers but also vocal arias). Thus the fabulous Sandrine Piau, a distinguished guest of this first recording, ideally portrays the gentle Sélène in the world premiere recording of an aria from Giuseppe Sarti's 'Didone abbandonata' (1762) and offers dazzling virtuosity in Diane's spectacular aria from Johann Christian Bach's serenade 'Endimione'. The listener will also (re)discover a little gem by Henri-Joseph Rigel, violist in Le Concert de la Loge Olympique: the Symphony Op. 12 no.4 (1774). With this first release, Julien Chauvin has created a stunningly beautiful disc, enhanced by the famous recording quality of the Aparté label and accompanied by a richly informed booklet.

It is exactly this sense of surprise and freshness – founded on a thorough knowledge of the score – and the sheer joy of making music together that prompted the members of the RCO to choose Daniele Gatti as their new chief conductor. The Bluray and DVD formats include Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture (Dresden version, 1845) and Franz Liszt's 'Orpheus' (1854).

Zur Chronik von Grieshuus / Chronicles of the Grey House The Complete Original Motion Picture Score 'Chronicles of the Grey House' was one of the major UFA productions dating from the age of silent film. In 1924, the UFA mustered all the best forces available for the filming of this novella by Theodor Storm. The screenplay was written by the 'Metropolis' author Thea von Harbou, the principal roles undertaken by Lil Dagover, Paul Hartmann and Rudolf Forster and the cameraman was Fritz Arno Wagner who had filmed Murnau’s 'Nosferatu' two years previously. To top it all off, the soundtrack of the film featured original orchestral music composed by Gottfried Huppertz who had composed already the score for Fritz Lang’s 'Nibelungen' (available on Pan classics, PC 10345) and would subsequently compose the soundtrack for Lang’s 'Metropolis'.
