A message from our President... I’ve just about dried out and recovered from the “cold” I caught during our campout. While the rain was coming sideways, we put it to a vote and 8 adults and maybe 30 kids voted to stay out. Jeff Earley kept telling us it was going to get better. He was right, the rain stopped long enough for us to cook all the marshmallows and s’mores the kids could eat, catch a few catsh, and get in our sleeping bags before the next round of rains came. Two years in a row we have been rained on. Next year has to be better. You have to be proud of our members when you see the support given to The “Roy Williams Fast Break for Cancer Fund Raiser, Honoring Ted Seagroves”. As many of you know, Ted was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. But he’s licked it and is committed to raising the public’s knowledge about this killer and research funds to assist in nding new treatments. The event was a major success.

nd Approximately 300 participants attended the cocktail and dance, 108 the golf tournament and several dozen tookk ts advantage of the reserved seats available to participants and attended “Late Night with Roy”. Thanks to subwayy for their sponsorship and the UNC Athletics for thee tickets to the “Late Night with Roy” event. Craig has the golf course in as good of shape as I can remember. The greens are fast, and the course just looks good, particularly as you drive by number 18. But there is still much to be done and we will continue the momentum into next year. You’ll see trees coming down as we seek to improve air circulation and the amount of sunlight the greens get. We have several end of the year golng events scheduled. tain’s choice event scheduled for One of my favorites being the Christmas Cup, a captain’s December 7th. This was started about 10 years ago by Tim Mann and Subway in support of the Christmas House, a local Chapel Hill charity that provides Christmas gifts to children of families who might not be able to afford gifts. Club members are asked to bring two $20 gifts, one for a boy and one for a girl. You need not to participate to bring a gift. Historically, we are the biggest single contributor to this Christmas charity. The winners of the tournament share in toast of champagne from the Christmas cup. Before it’s too late. House Committee It is in the nature of the house committee’s charge that no issue or situation is too tiny for us to consider. We cover the small stuff, the in-between stuff and the big stuff, such as the acceptability of jeans in the clubhouse and getting men to take their hats off when they come inside (you’re doing good, guys). Which brings me to napkins.
The Fall Membership Drive is proving to be a success with several new members this month. Please welcome Mark and Beverly Attwood, Dan and Monica Isaksson, Michael and Deon Roach, and Elizabeth Wattles Wilkes into our Club family! New members are currently being offered special rates, and we hope to foster a member base that will carry the club into the future, as well as work towards bigger and better club programs for all ages. We encourage you to invite your friends to join. We love hosting prospective members for a round of golf, dinner, or any other club activity that piques interest. As always, if you have any questions regarding membership, be it your own or otherwise, please contact me. Membership Dues exceeded budget for the rst time this year and are reecting a $9,000 positive variance for the month. Food & Beverages and all other departments are close to budget. Overall, the month is coming in at a $15,000 decit versus a budgeted surplus of $4,000. We anticipate higher levels of member participation in the last quarter which will help to close some of the budget gaps. We did well with the Spring Membership Drive Incentive and are now offering a Fall Incentive Program. Please visit the reception desk for more information, and don’t forget to tell a friend!

But there’s good news. The club has black napkins. If a diner would like a black napkin to place sedately upon her black pants, her wish will be granted. Unless, of course, all the black napkins are in the laundry, which seems unlikely, given that so few members know we even have them. And here is even more good news: One of our esteemed club managers told me the napkins we use are not cotton, which can leave lint behind, but are made of a synthetic material not likely to leave spoor when spread. So white napkins on black pants, black napkins on white pants, white on white or black on black _ it’s all good. Winter Rules of Play Preferred Lies or Winter Rules are now in effect. Through the green a ball lying on a closely mown “fairway” may, without penalty, be moved or lifted, cleaned, and placed within one club length of where it originally lay, not nearer the hole and not in a hazard or a putting green. A ball so lifted is back in play when the player addresses it. This rule will be in effect until we start playing the ball down again in the spring 2013.

Course Conditions Leaf removal takes center stage this time of year. Keeping up with this operation is a mostly a losing battle, but we again will do the best we can. Hauling off the leaves is not cost affective, and homeowners usually frown on us blowing the leaves into their backyards. Therefore for years, a different method has been used. The leaves are rowed up into the primary rough by blowers. Rotary mowers with mulching decks are then used to chop the debris into a ne dust. This dust is then dispersed into the ground and can no longer been seen. There will be weeks that the leaves are falling too fast to make headway, but we will eventually catch up. As the rst frosts arrive, so do frost delays. The “Course Condition” section on the website is updated by 7:30 every morning. At that time, we make the best estimate when the course will be open. The greens are checked constantly for frost throughout the morning and the golf shop is updated frequently on the most likely opening time. Thank you, Craig S. Thompson, CGCS
SMGA News The Fall Breakfast and Superball was played under ideal conditions. The team of Ed Kaiser, Ev Kemp, Sumner Tanson and Tom Lund was victorious. The Ofcers and new Directors for 2013 are: President Dick Ellgen, Vice President Terry Flynn and new directors Franklin Lamn, Andy Mayer, Tony Oberschall, Dan White, Jim Williams, and Paul Richardson. The interclub program has provided a great opporunity for SMGA members to play on the other great courses in the Triangle. This year has been well promoted and attended thanks to the leadership of Rick Lessard. The last of two CHCC events was held on October 10th with 56 players in attendance. The Annual Awards Banquet will be held on November 11th to celebrate a most successful golf season. Members are requested to make their reservations and declare their choice of meal so Chef Jimmy Reale can prepare his usual excellent fare. Cocktails begin at 6:15 with dinner at 7 p.m. The Wednesday Playdays have benetted from some spectacular fall weather and continue o be the backbone of the SMGA. Greetings all from the WGA, It seems like we were just announcing the kick-off of our 2012 season – how is it possible we have ended our year already? At the writing of this article we are planning our nal play date on October 30th and on Sunday, October 21st we held our 2012 WGA Championship. It was an absolutely gorgeous autumn day, with sunny cool temperatures and lightening quick greens (putting strokes totally dominated this writer’s scorecard!). Amidst a eld of 16 players Linda Johnston took the Championship honors with a Low gross of 87, with Carolyn Hightower winning Low Net in her ight with a 72 and Kate Eifrig earning the same honor in her ight with a 77. Organizers Kelly Ross and Barbi Dalton rounded out the event with a posttournament reception including our traditional champagne “Toast to the Champions”. Congratulations to our 2012 Champions!
Ending our 2012 season doesn’t mean ending our golf. Far from it! Thursdays continue as playdays, just more informally. 9:30 is the tee time. No need to sign up—just show up and groups go off in rapid order. No formal game, no printed scorecards. Aha, that makes the off-season a great time to work on your game.
In October we were happy to welcome new member Susan Gibson to the WGA. Susan was able to get a few rounds in with us before our close and we are looking forward to her joining us for the full 2013 year. The WGA is always looking for new members; if you are interested please contact Linda Johnston (email ljj3643@aol.com). In other happenings 8 WGA members along with 7 other golfers from local clubs attended Veronica Karaman’s clinic “Breakthrough to Your “A” Game”. Veronica was a U.S. Open player, and now an instructor and certied performance coach. Her 3-hour mindset workshop is designed to help develop mental processes that will enable golfers to move to an improved level of play. We’ll be watching to see if any of the CHCC attendees make “Most Improved Golfer” next year! And now that I think of it both Linda Johnston and Kate Eifrig attended that class. Just a few calendar reminders: Effective November 1st, our Tuesday tee times move to 10:00 a.m. There are no sign-up sheets for play during the winter months so just call the Pro Shop. Mark your busy calendars now for our annual “holiday” party on Friday, January 11, 2013. Mollie and Jim Fraser have once again volunteered their lovely home for this bash and with Shere Stone organizing we are sure to have another delightful, fun evening. Finally, in Dick and my twelve years in North Carolina we have never seen such a blanket of acorns cover our backyard. Thinking about playing from the combo tees, if you’re not already? Many members have adopted the combos and love them. Play from the combos at any time with no handicap problem—just tell the computer which tees you used when recording your score. Who knew it was so easy? The smart little devil always asks which tees you used and shows your handicap from both sets automatically, regardless of ones you normally play. Adult Tennis Clinics & Socials Monday Mornings Ladies Clinic: 9-10:30 am Ladies 2.5/3.0 Clinic – Lindsay Benton and Jarrod Randle will be here each Monday to run this clinic, which is a great way for New players to get involved and meet players and work on their tennis games.
Wednesday Night Men’s Tennis: 6:30-8:30 pm ALL levels Welcomed! We have a few options for this weekly night of fun tennis. Option 1: Show and play, with the club providing a bucket of beer for all the players to enjoy…Honor system on the beers guys! Play will start at 6:30pm. We will have a tally sheet by the bucket for you to jot down. Option 2: Lindsay, Derek and/or Jarrod will coordinate an hour clinic from 6:30-7:30 for those who sign up (limited to 12). Afterwards, all guys are welcomed to jump into Men’s night for the last hour and get a set or two in. Prices for the clinic (minimum of 3 for a clinic) is based on numbers and typically between $12-$15. If only 2 guys show up for clinic, it will be a semi-private lesson. Junior Tennis Clinics & Events PLEASE SIGN UP PRIOR TO EACH SESSION. Fall Session 2: Tuesdays and Thursdays October 30th –December 13th: 7 Week Session Pee Wee: ages 4-7 3:15 – 4:00PM Future Stars: ages 8-12 4:00 – 5:00PM Tournament Training: ages 10-16 5:00 – 6:30PM Rain Dates: December 18th and 20th
Junior Team Tennis: Fridays, 4-6pm Overall, this clinic is for juniors to come out and play matches among other club kids during the 2 hours for practice. The Quickstart 8s and 10s will be on the hard courts, while the 12 and up players will be on the clay. All juniors must be able to rally, serve and keep score to be able to keep score to join this clinic. In case of inclement weather, please check with the pro shop to check on court/weather conditions. The cost is $20 per clinic. Drinks and refreshments will be provided at the end. We will continue this practice throughout November, weather permitting.
Junior Lock-In: Friday, November 9th What a fun night for our juniors here at CHCC! This will be available for those juniors attending our Future Stars and Tournament Training Clinics, those taking lessons at CHCC or participating in our Junior Team Tennis clinics. Cardio Tennis with Derek Boone, Head Tennis Professional Fridays, 10:00AM -11:30AM ** Be advised, this clinic will involve intense cardio routines at times and focus more on conditioning rather than technique and strategy. Our original block of seats have all be spoken for, but you can still purchase our ticket package for Jersey Boys which includes a ticket to the show, transportation to and from the Durham Performing Arts Center, and a drink voucher!
