At the First National Harm Reduction Conference in 1996, when HRC was looking for someone to speak about “the politics and complexity of being an active user in the harm reduction movement,” the list of potential speakers was quite short. The list for this presentation today, on essentially the same topic, was equally short. Not the kind of short list where you’ve whittled down a longer list of 20-30 or so names to a handful. The kind where you start off with three or four, scratch off a couple and then you have your short list—maybe one or two names. I was the speaker in 1996, and here I am again.
