Kutumb Remediating barriers of Age through ArchitectureAn intergenerational retreat

Location Yercaud Tamil Nadu, India

Brief Old age homes or retirement care communities are spaces designed for the elderly, providing much needed safety, security, and stability. These spaces, although intend to provide constant company, but lack at creating an overall family setting. Throughout Indian history, generations from the oldest to the youngest have all lived under the same roof. This family setting has always been beneficial as children are enriched with great wisdom from the seniors while the seniors have help in their day-to-day activities. An Intergenerational program is a similar concept that aims at recreating these bonds by providing a platform for The youth and the older adults to interact and grow together. To promote the idea of an intergenerational setting in a retirement home, a community combining a youth hostel and an old age home was designed. The thesis aimed at understanding these typologies and designing spaces that would encourage relationships across generations and foster the best of both worlds.

In fig 1 the land use map is illustrated where red denotes residential, yellow denotes hostels, green denotes commercial spaces, green denotes religious spots, blue shade denotes the famous manmade lake. In the fig 2, the contours map is illustrated where the lighter green depicts the higher while the darker tone depicts the lowest Fig 2: Illustrated Contour map, Yercaud

Concept development- Site zoning

The retirement community was placed on a relatively flatter contour of the site with a common gathering space connecting either of the communities

The hostel community was placed right above the retirement community to create an intentional interaction while being close to the entrance

Following the contour, the hostel bloc was divided into 4 levels having the hostels units, kindergarten, game rooms& utility room zoned accordingly.

The communites were designed curvilinear respecting the contours while having easy access to the common area and the youth block

To promote interaction between either of the communties an interaction space was created. this space included a multiverse recreational area and an amphitheater.

The zoning was divided into semi-public, private and public zone, directing a natural yet restricted flow through the spaces to either ends of the site.

Retirement Home

Illustrative top view of the Retirement community To design the retirement community a radial layout was explored. This format was used as a response to the contour patterns of the site. The radial concept helps provide a more directional layout with all the spaces designed within a 5:10 radial stencil all directing towards a common point and help promote unintentional interactions between people. This community consists of 3bhks, 2bhks, Bhk and Studio home.

PMC Pranay medical centre

Location Palanpur Gujarat, India

Brief Pranay medical center is a space for emotional, social, and practical support for patients and people living around. The center is designed on a 4.9-acre plot located in Palanpur, Gujarat. The peri-urban settlement acts as a core from which medical assistance is provided to 17 surrounding villages. Understanding the importance of the need for a medical center and the range of patients assisted, the building is designed to create comfortable spaces which have a relationship with nature, in turn, providing a better experience for rejuvenating patients and their families, and act as a healthy work environment for the medical staff. To accommodate the diverse medical facilities provided, the building is broken down into four components. These components are then unified with a centric healing garden that is accessible by all the zones. The building is aligned to procure maximum wind and cut down harsh sunlight. To create experiential healing spaces, the building incorporates numerous voids and openings, bringing in natural filtered light, creating an atmosphere which aids the doctors and patients alike.

Concept development

Upon analyzing the medical needs for the town 4 head departments were finalized, i.e, OPD, IPD, Casualty and the Diagnostic department. the entrance was decided on the top right coner and further these departments stacked based on the most needed decending towards the ones that needed the maximum privacy.

Outpatient Dept. (OPD)

According to the IS Standards, space requirements for each department was calculated and zoned according to the user space Index. A courtyard was designed in the center connecting all the four departments and also acted as a buffer zone for the space.

Casualty Dept.

To Provide a two-way entry for the casualty block, the OPD block was redesigned into an L shaped space and pushed a little towards the courtyard to form a niche for movement. The monotony of the IPD block was broken by divided it into 2 sections and staggering it towards the inside, defining the courtyards space

Diagnostic Dept.

Levels were added to each department to accommodate every requirement needed for a better practice. The levels were staggered the most towards the west, blocking harsh sunlight into the courtyard while forming an green air pocket for the site.

Inpatient Dept. (IPD)

Location

Tiruchirapalli Tamil Nadu, India

Brief It was primarily intended to gain an advanced understanding at the internal logic of city layout and sensible experience. This permitted us to address complicated city challenges, and to synthesize their knowledge right into a design project on the interface among planning, structure and landscape structure. We were assigned to increase complex city layout and architectural projects, via way of means of critically reflecting and integrating applicable design standards which included heritage, transit, public space, landscape, urban structure, morphology, building typology, building heights, materiality, interventions (macro & micro ), and phased development.

Public park

The 350 m wide stretch which was recovered was used to propose a large central public space where the citizens could engage in a variety of activities. The idea was to have pavilions, play spaces, community lawns and an urban market with food plaza, all in the same space. The park was divided into 7 zones which were then attached or detached using pathways, arcades and orchards of trees to create different experiences. Trichy Central Park would end up becoming a land for celebration of the people.

The natural end result is an organic, landscape-like arrangement comprising dynamic thoroughfares, staggered seating and steps, and slightly sloping green areas and water features that join the special top levels of the square in a reputedly apparent way. Environmentally sound mobility atmosphere wherein Trichy residents can spend their leisure time relaxing and communicating.

Individual Intervention Site Concept development

The design aims at exploring parameters that allow this space to act as an additional element of the nearby schools and Montessori and thus Programme of this site is a combination of a library and a Children’s play space.

The fact that land use around the site is majorly schools and residential areas, introducing an educational element like the library could have a positive impact on the area and also promote a certain culture into the society.

cafe and Library Concept development

Illustrated plan and section of the Library and Cafe

An interior view of the Library

While designing the built structure, instead of using the conventional brick walls, I section steel beams structures were used in a grid format representing the wall. This framework not only lets light and air into the space but also maintains a visual connection to the outside. A small circular courtyard planted with shrubs sits in the middle of the building, providing a sense of connection to nature. And surrounding it, in the cafe, are in-built concrete blocks and tables used as seating spaces.

Meenakshi Home Chennai, Tamil nadu Freelancing

The proposed renovation project for Meenakshi & Family’s new home focuses on maintaining a minimalist modern setting. The family of four wanted their BHKhome that could mould into a comfortable setting but also transform into a occasional gathering space. Following the needs, the wall dividing the living and dining was converted into a collapsible wooden mirror therefore increasing the visual length but also providing privacy when needed. The interior design followed the Japandi style of design, expressing craftsmanship through the indigenous flooring, design following functionality with a focus on warmth, natural elements, and muted color palettes.

CLOUD - 3A Coimbatore, Tamil nadu Freelancing CLOUD 3A is a residential project located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The house was bought with the tiles laid and the walls plastered. The wall dividing the living and dining was removed to create visual length while letting light flood the space. the living area was then designed with veneer wooden planks extending to on both walls create a niche as well as hiding the entrance to the master bedroom. The kitchen was designed to provide comfortable movement and a portioned utility space. A storage cabinet was used in the kitchen as a replacement for the partition wall dividing the utility and the kitchen.

Shah Paradise Salem, Tamil nadu

Complex layout and facade design Freelancing Shah paradise is a commercial complex located in Salem, Tamil Nadu. The overall built-up area spans for over 18 cents with 900 sq.mt of open space. The complex has 2 levels of commercial rental space with a basement parking area and a rooftop restaurant, accessible through stairs and lifts. For the facade design, 2 different options were conceptualized where in the first design, an organic form was explored where the curves tried to break the monotony of the building. While the other option focuses on framing the skeleton of the building by extruding parts of the facade to create a depth effect.

Backyard Salem, Tamil nadu

Remodeling and landscape design Freelancing This landscape project focused on revamping and rejuvenating the backyard space while adding an additional piece of the land adjacent to the northern side of the site. The car shed was converted from an L shaped setting to a square shaded area to create extra paring space. The garden towards the south was designed with a seating deck and the over space within and leading to the space was lit with floor lights. As the added land was 2ft taller than the remaining, it was decided to maintain and treat it as staged as a multifunctional area.
